Been doing car hauling locally for hogan in NorCal for almost 4 years and I can say I didn’t really start totally understanding weights until about a couple years ago. Love your videos. I started running local with my own 7 car rig almost 3 years ago with zero experience. It was hard and your points are spot on…but I could NOT quit with six figures in equipment loans lol. BUT, now I AVERAGE $6-$8k gross per week and am home every night. With principal and interest plus expenses I net a solid 50%-70% of that. Higher the revenue the higher the net %. I work 30-40 hours per week on average. The key to netting a healthy 6 figures (personal income) in local is not relying on job boards to do it. Gotta make your own connections and that is harder than learning how to haul efficiently. Oh yea you can use a single Axel on a 7 car all day long. I ran a Pete 377 single Axel with a 7 car Wally mo for years. Just make sure your drives are virgin tires not recaps and check your states weights but we could run 22k on the drive Axel

I got my DOT number and MC number but I quit before I got started. The insurance was way too high $2700 here in California for a new CDL driver. I was going to buy a new Dodge ram 5500 and a 5/6 car hauler.

Yea when I first started it was the same thing it’s very expensive for new companies for insurance. It takes about 3-4 years to see that decrease. I believe when I started it was around 1700-1800 a month for 1 truck and that was in 2009 by time I quit I think it was 1200 a month for 3 trucks

You can’t depend on work from competitors to stay afloat. It’s ok to run the work your competition gives you but you have to have your own accounts. And you could always sign on with a factoring company that charges 3% and you’d only lose $60 on a $2000 load

I had bad training in the beginning. It used to take me so long to load up my truck. When I started back in 2002, it was all chains. No one ever taught me how to not be a bar chaser. What I mean by that is I wasted a lot of time trying to hunt down where I laid my tie-down bar. It's slow in the beginning, but speed comes in its own time. I've seen a lot of drivers cause a lot of damage because they were trying to keep up with seasoned drivers. Also, if you're not willing to work in all the elements of the weather then this is not the business for you. And also be willing to ask questions. Drivers who don't ask questions will make mistakes. Sometimes mistakes can be so bad it means unloading your truck and starting from the beginning.

I spent 20 years in trucking from 1968 to 1988. The last 10 years as a teamster union car hauler with Anchor Motor Freight before it became Leaseway. Absolutely loved it. Made 40k a year, the equivalent of 126k today driving some of the most junky trucks you can imagine, lol! I ran regional out of Tarrytown, NY. Mostly upstate NY toward the end of my tenure. I saved up enough money in those 10 years to open my HVAC/ plumbing and electrical contracting business which I sold for 15mm in 2020. Your advise is the same advise I would have given over 40 years ago. It's good to hear the car hauling industry is still a money maker. Thanks for sharing the information my brother. You’ll probably be one of the few that actually become car haulers. It’s not hard hard work but it’s not as easy as bumping docks. #1 tip not mentioned....Stay away from United Road or get out soon as you have your experience and go somewhere else....them dudes are chasing their tales and nationwide falling apart and wasting their drivers time ,so when you are commision paid....it becomes a problem. They have major problems and if you want to know the truth just ask the other drivers at the loading bays,you will will quickly get an overwhelming support of this claim Ive made here. Dont just believe me.....ask around and make your own decisions. The majority of their drivers stay over a small little niche that just works for them right now,and eventually United Road finds ways to trip and fall all over themselves. Dont expect respect and courtesy when you leave either,they will react like a psycho ex girlfriend, never even considering how they push drivers away,no matter how professional and respectful you conduct yourself there.

Ok I have to admit before I watched the video I expected to hear a bunch of B.S. but I have to say you nailed it! I did 25 year's mostly local and in that time I've seen almost everything good and bad. Car hauling is hands down one of the hardest trucking jobs there is when it comes to learning. Just driving the truck is different than any other truck. I was always willing to help new driver's but as men we usually push back when someone tells us we are doing something wrong so it's a little touchy trying to give advice. I know you were making a video about getting into car hauling but for driver's with experience please stay open minded because we can always learn a new trick. I worked out of a rail head and the port was there also I knocked out 3 to 5 loads a day and I always told guys don't try to keep up! It doesn't matter how fast you are if you are getting damage. Work your own pace. The sad part is I was making over $1500 a week in the early 80's, car haulers make good money but it didn't keep pace with the economy or a local driver would make $200k today.

That really depends on what type of car hauling your doing. If your running local 3-6 a week as a new guy would kinda be expected but if your running regional 2-3 loads a week would be good. But being new no they aren’t gonna just fire you for that they will help you learn to be faster.

From what I’ve heard it’s easier as in less auction walking and walking new car plants but a lot more driving and over the road stuff. As for the money it kinda seems to even out at the end of the month. You make a lot more per car but normal car hauling you haul more cars. So I think it ends up being more of a personal decision

I was just hired, starting on the 6th! I’ve been patiently waiting for perfect opportunity to come along. I was an owner operator ten years ago and didn’t have any recent experience, so I took a job hauling mail to boost my resume while I took my time to carefully find the right fit with a car hauler. Most of the companies here have a high turnover rate and are always hiring to replace the ones that left. I was extremely picky finding the right company and waited (im)patiently for the right fit! I started a company out here In Michigan. I was supposed to be a long haul car hauler and they had me doing short runs through Chicago took all day literally ran out the 14 hr clock for only $350 a load w2!!!! Up in that area I’d say almost any of the car hauling companies should be able to get you long haul. But I will say I would never work for a company on a w2 ever. If you don’t own the equipment don’t let them try to get you to pay all the taxes their supposed to be paying.

Been there. So my biggest recommendation is gonna be get the car straight before you start loading it then keep your hand that the 12 o’clock position so you always know where straight is. Then never adjust more then 10-2 if your turning more then that stop pull off and start again. But you’ll get better the more you do it so don’t worry it’ll come up you

So here at United your gonna need a minimum of 6 months otr before they will hire you. Mostly because the auto industry has slowed down this year so they are starting to get picky. But yes they will hire as a rookie car hauler they have a training program. As for pay I don’t know if the numbers have gone up but they do have a minimum yearly pay of $52,000 for new car haulers. Now I’ll say after the first couple months once you get the hang of it you should be making way over the minimum pay rate

I have 6 years of safe (100% clean MVR), driving 45' motorcoaches in Denver. I'm making $30 per hour now. Thinking of making a career change but I only have a class B. If I get my class A I would definitely want to be a car hauler. (But I would have to quit my current job to be able to get my class A, so I would need to have a good plan if I'm going to make a jump, because it's risky) How hard is it to get a car hauling job right out of CDL school? Is it possible to get a hauling job with on the job training where I could get my class A? I'm hoping my driving experience and clean record count for something. What would you recommend? I start training Monday! Everyone is telling me I’m too fat though even the boss who hired me, but he said I could give it a try. Why does me being chubby cause issues? I will be driving a high rail please explain, is it because of the doors opening or what? First of all, you will probably lose weight, you will within 6 months be walking several miles a day between rounding up the cars,loading and delivering....its inevitable. 2) Change your diet,eat less more nutritional stuff,bring your own food...the days are long and the potential for costly mistakes is high,you will feel better and perform better. 3) The more round you are the less space you will have working around the truck, and loading units like Miatas,BRZ s,and Mirage. 4) Ive seen very round dudes loading and they do just fine,but I think theyd feel better if they werent, its a matter of what YOU are willing to do and what YOU are willing to tolerate all day,every day. I started about 40lbs overweight, thats all gone now and I feel much better than I did when I started.

100% United would train if your in an area that they you are located in. But most of the big companies will train so pick the one that has runs that you would enjoy doing the most and apply there

I started with URS, a few months ago. The last 2 weeks I've been given a load to Boise which have paid fine. But then there's nothing going back, so it doubles my days on the load, but no extra pay. So if they keep giving me Boise, I'm going to have to complain. I've only done 4 long loads, and only 1 had a good back load.

Their may be outside reasons that your getting the loads that you are. Now recognize your name so Ik we have chatted before but I don’t remember if you came with experience or not. If not they may be trying to pick loads that will be easy as you get the hang of car hauling. But I would start by talking to your terminal if that doesn’t work then call hr and ask what your options are for transferring or what they might know you could do. Lastly which is the worst case is you might be in a dead terminal where it’s only 1 way freight for the most part. But feel free to email me if you don’t want to chat publicly

So the way it’s always been explained to me is they can’t just take it from your paycheck unless you agree to letting them. But if a bonus is the reward for not having damages that’s fair game. They have moved to a centralized dispatch and taken it away from the terminals. So I think this is going to change how things are and if so I can’t genuinely recommend them to anyone right now until I have decided if the changes are for the best for the driver.
