Thank you for creating an instructional video. The industry would certainly benefit from proper training. This video and others like it are oftentimes the only hope for new car haulers. That being said, for new drivers in this same equipment, namely a Peterbilt affixed to a Cottrell CX-09, here a few suggestions: Lower position #2 as close to the ground as is possible before loading and unloading. Position 2 is your second car on. It goes on forward. It doesn't take long to lower the deck, and it's worth the time. By lowering deck/position #2 before loading (and unloading), you create a flat platform onto which you can drive, at a height at which you can safely work. You can also enter and exit your unit without fear of falling, and strap and tighten your tires from the ground. The job is dangerous enough. Don't take unnecessary risks. Loading and unloading #2 high in the sky will save you only a few minutes every day, but one fall off your truck might cost you for a lifetime. Load and strap #2 at ground level. Next, take your load height seriously. If you're close to or East of the Mississippi River, aim to be at or under 13'6". Google the height requirements nationwide. There's a map. 13'6 is a tough ceiling for an East Coast car hauler, but it exists for as reason. (I'm looking at you, I-44 thru St Louis!) If you can't make height, drop or swap out a unit and save yourself the anxiety of a bridge strike. If you're close, and by close I mean 13'8, consider hard strapping a unit with a strap around the frame, so as to compress the suspension. OEMs frown on this, but damn if it don't work well on a 1500 Silverado over your day cab. With that, measure honestly and with your trailer brakes released. That means red button pushed in, air in your trailer suspension, like it will be when you're driving. Twirl and walk down that height stick at your best 90 degree angle without looking at the measurement until you begin to skim something. Then look at your measurement. Where your stick begins to flirt with the top of that roof or loathed shark fin antenna is your true height. Too many of us set the stick to our "hopeful height" and then see if the stick doesn't drag across a roof. Lastly, download the Cottrell mobile app. When the provided diagrams load properly, they can be very helpful to you. Finally, have some respect for the law. I'm not saying you should do 54 in CA and a full air brake test every morning. I'm saying you should give more of a damn than you don't. Take I-20 (NOT 30) thru Ft Worth. Strap all four. Remember that Mercedes S classes bounce a lot! 4wd on any vehicle that has it. Electric vehicles are heavy. Close your #1 pockets for Teslas. And don't take a chance with a set of rail tracks on top of a triangle-like peak.

This job should pay over 125k a year. There is a science behind it and a special skill set and mentality. You are out in the rain, snow, ice, heat, sun, wind. I saw some auto hauler jobs for 70-80k/yr and that is CRAZY because you can be a steering wheel holder and do dry van and make that or more. I value this job at 125k.

I can't think when I last carried 6 unless there were a couple of high roof vans in the mix, seven standard height Transit and anything from 9 to11 or maybe 12 cars are the norm this side of the water. We can run a little over 60 feet long for the truck itself and although there's no height limit 16 foot is about as high as we run at for practical reasons, empty we start out at 13. 9".

Only some states pay attention to that on carhualers like Michigan or ohio most carhaulers have no choice we are rarely at 13.6 most the time we have no choice but to do 13.8-11 but our cut off hight is 14 max since most bridges are over 14 minimum

@MikeDCWeld
@MikeDCWeld 10 ай бұрын
The law doesn't actually stipulate a minimum time for the pre and post trip inspections. However, most DOT officers and companies hold the opinion that you can't properly inspect every item the regulations require you to in any less than an absolute minimum of 15 minutes. If a DOT officer sees inspection times that they believe to be insufficient during an inspection, they can require you to do a pre-trip inspection for them to demonstrate that the time shown is accurate. If that inspection either is incomplete or takes significantly longer than the time reflected in your logs, they can issue you violations.
