The Motor Trend Car of the Year (COTY) is an annual Car of the Year award given by Motor Trend magazine to recognize the best new or significantly refreshed car in a given model year. Motor Trend's Car of the Year is "one of the most prestigious honors bestowed in the auto industry." The trophy for the winner, a depiction of calipers, is often used in the winning automaker's marketing and advertising. Most cars that win the award report a spike in sales.
In this video, we go over all cars that were the car of the year for the 1970s decade.

Unfortunately, at the time these cars won the award in their respective years, no one could see into the future. I’m sure that if Motor Trend could travel back through time they would rescind a few of those choices lol.

I had a neighbor when I was a kid who had that exact car used in the thumbnail, the orange 1970 Torino with the racing stripe on the side. We lived in small houses in the city and he was one of several neighbors that spend the week working in city and then left go to their (actual) homes in the country on the weekends. He had a wife a daughter and a son, pure bred country folk.

I remember looking at a new Plymouth Volare and the salesman telling me that it was Car Of The Year. I didn’t buy the Volare (thank God) but I do remember telling the salesman that after they named the Vega and the Mustang II car of the year, I wouldn’t put much credence into anything that Motor Trend ever said. Then we got I to the 80’s and the Renault Encore/Alliance. Need I say more?

My mom got a new 73 Monte Carlo. It was triple black. It was the first car we owned with radial tires. We lived on sandy dirt roads and I always knew when my mom got home from work while out riding my bike from the unique tire treads pattern left in the dirt on the roads. My parents loved the car so much my dad bought a 1974 triple black Monte Carlo with swivel bucket seats. I eventually bought it off them in 1979 for my first car. Great memories!!!

Growing up, a prominent businessman in our town had a 1972 Citroen SM. Very unusual with its unique air suspension, yet a very handsome car, in my view. My Dad's company car in 1976 was a Chevrolet Monte Carlo. I always got a kick out of the swivel bucket seats, similar to the much older Chrysler Imperial, back in the day.

I had an Omni. In 1986 I paid $13,000 and drove a RARE brand new Black with Silver interior and Red pen stripping GLH Turbo literally off the showroom floor. The little screaming pocket rocket was EXTREMELY fast for the day and would just absolutely roast the front 195-50 Goodyear Eagle GTs plum clean clear off ...... WHEN IT WAS OUT A THE SHOP!!!!! First 90 days (yes, 90 days) it spent 67 days (once again, YES, 67 days) in the shop with 3, count them, 3 exploded trans-axles!!!! BUT, when it was out of the shop, wasn't many that could keep up with it. One particular race that comes to mind, I beat a guy I went to school with who had another car on this list, sorta. He had a 1977 Plymouth Roadrunner (built on the Volare). Beat him pretty bad and he was fit to be tied. Said he want to go Again in the opposite direction and I blew his doors off a second time! He didn't speak to me again until 3 years later when I got rid of the GLH!!! 😂😂😂

From 1969 on, Detroit had to build "smog motors". The Chevy 427 in 1968 made 375 HP and 400+ ft/lbs, in 1969, the 454 made 220 HP and 320 ft/lbs. MOPAR kept their compression ratios up until 1971 and kept their HP and torque up, by , as today, offering "limited production" vehicles. After 1974 the "gas squeezer" engines that made NO HP OR TORQUE came along and the Chevy 454 dropped as low as 172 HP for the California Version, or the 400CID "skinny block" as low as 148 HP and a EPA mileage rating of eight MPG which NONE of them got, even on the highway at 55 MPH! Honda Accord debuted with a 1768CC four banger rated (VERY CONSERVATALY) at 113 HP @ 4000 RPM or MORE than the 287CID V-8 in a Ford Fairmont or Granada and in a car with about the same interior room (the early Accords seated 5) delivered THREE times the EPA estimated MPG as a Fairmont!

Citroens are great! Very clever design! I briefly owned a 1963 DS and it had the owner's manual included. There were so many simple, but brilliant design aspects of it that I likely would never have gotten around to using! Practically all hydrologic driven! At the same time I also had a 1979 Plymouth Horizon I wanted for fuel efficiency after driving an enormous Chevy Bel Air for several years! I could probably have gotten better use out of the Horizon had it not been in a likely serious accident and prettied up by a shady dealership my parents purchased it from when they knew I had been interested in them!

Neigbor back then actually owned a Citroën DS, the hydropneumatic suspension could smooth out the roughness roads, you could drive it on 3 wheels as the wheels could be lowered or raised in unison or independently. The SM won MTCOTY, it was powered by a Maserati V6. Dad had a 1979 T Type Riviera, white with a blue interior.
