Muay Thai works and also does every martial arts, it doesn't depend on the art, but depends on the user and their intellectual ability to use the techniques provided to them by the art that they practice, people choose Muay Thai because it's a simple martial art but extremely deadly, unlike Karate that have a lot of complex Kata you got to memorize, and also Kata is useless, you gotta go with the Kata Bunkai or the application of the form. The thing is, no martial art is perfect, Muay Thai has a weakness and that's close range boxing or a good a grappler, Karate also has a weakness, that is also grappling, grappling arts like BJJ or Judo also has a weakness and that's striking, it's a rock paper scissors situation. And to add to this, Muay Thai is the striking art but there's the predecessor which is Muay Boran, a martial art born for war turned into sport, it allowed throws, takedowns, and illegal shots as well, same for Karate, originally used as a self defense art before transitioning to a sport where it got watered down, entirely focusing on forms instead of application. To put it simply: each art has their own strengths and weaknesses, no matter how much you glaze it.
