As a man and I defy any other male to challenge this, would less likely approach a hijabi for flirting compared to scantily dressed women. She is merely pointing that out. Victim blaming to me is when you say that person deserved what they got by the actions they took. By making recommendations to prevent the odds of that reoccurring event in the future should not be deemed victim blaming. Muslims believe God created us and He knows us better than ourselves, so we make suggestions to others being non Muslim, to pigeon hole this as victim blaming is a bit disingenuous. I'm glad you found the video helpful :)

This Video promotes fallacious ideas and misrepresents motives for sexual assault and rape. First of all, when responding to a sexual assault allegation, the clothing of the victim should be irrelevant. Rape and sexual assault are not exclusive to women that are deemed immodest. @@az-zarah2059 instilling the idea that men don’t have to do anything to change, and that women should be the ones to cover up instead enforces the idea of rape being the victims fault. This is a similar situation to the dress codes in many different schools who also have this idea that “shoulders are a distraction.” Not saying that I don’t like hijabs though. When it comes to covering your hair for respecting your religion, that’s amazing. But if you have to cover up in fear of men, that is a different problem that society has to work on together.

it wasn't created to bring down the fashion industry. If that is what you heard then you should probably watch the video again, 'cause she was so clearly not saying that. Most of these problems are not modern, they go back hundreds of years. And if you heard the last part, it's not for society that people wear hijab, the main reason is that God tells them to and they do 'cause they are dedicated women.

As a Muslim girl who wears a hijab, I can say that about 80% of this video is correct while the other 20% is completely wrong, telling women that they are less likely to get raped or harassed based on what they wear is wrong. any girl wearing ANYTHING can get raped. For the people in the comments, it is forbidden in Islam to force your daughter to wear the hijab. Mixing up a toxic culture and religion is wrong and completely stupid. The "why you should too" is also really stupid because you shouldn't be telling people that they should be wearing a hijab and dictating what they should and shouldn't wear. also, I think it's really funny how Islamophobes who know nothing about Islam just watch these videos to leave nasty comments. stop being so obsessed xx oh I forgot to mention, for any of you who are Christian in this comment section, your religion literally has nuns who wear what Muslims consider a "hijab", don't say it is oppressive because if it truly was (which it isn't) then you are a hyprocrite.

There is nothing liberating about covering your hair with a piece of cloth. Ask anyone in Iran or Saudi Arabia. I have seen many hijabis in the west with a face full of make up, tight jeans and high heels. This so called "modesty" has turned into a multi million dollar business. One's modesty, whether it is the man or woman comes through their behavior, not their outward appearance.
@AlexB-qs1sk
@AlexB-qs1sk 5 жыл бұрын
The video was not stating that the hijab should be used in isolation for modesty, it was stated as an additional part. Tight clothes and a hijab isn't modest according to Islam. When we laugh it is because it is the external manifestation of our inner state of happiness, so the internal naturally effects the external and vice versa. But it's very true what you say, modesty does also come from our behaviour too. Peace

Additionally, yes there are many women in the places you mentioned who feel forced to wear it. But have you actually compared that to the number of women who don't feel like they're forced to wear it? Go to the route, not the branch. You need to first see if those nations are actually following Islam correctly before you use them as an example of the practises of Islam and its effect.

I asked the person if they knew the figures themselves, and not to assume that all women wearing the hijab have the same experience; much like you are doing with me. My point was not to assume either way, but rather that there are women who are forced, and not forced, to wear it. hijab is not the best protection, Allah is. also, this sounds like the argument “if God was all-loving, why is there suffering in the world”. he cannot interfere every time something bad happens in the world or that would take away the best gift he has given us, free will. crimes happen everywhere, just because it’s labelled as a muslim country it does not mean it’s a safe haven. it’s sad but it’s the reality, muslims are not perfect, but islam is the perfect way of life. you cannot blame a religion just because people do not follow the religion properly, thank you.

Nowadays, women's beauty is exposed at full, and it impacts the minds of other girls who does not possess such beauty. As stated in the video, this causes depression and sadness to many women who does not have that body. So, by wearing hijab, you protect the minds of both men and women! Is that not what we want? Now that you think about it, hijab is so beautiful! It really shows how it is a form of saving the society and fixing its problem!

Yeah, sorry, not buying it. Women in Muslim countries are factually more oppressed than in other parts of the world. Obviously the hijab does nothing to make men show more respect for women. In fact it is a symbol of subservience to men. It's not modesty. It's an obliteration of identity. Individualism and freedom of expression are what lead to empowerment. Men of old understood this, which is why they wanted women covered in public. You're following archaic, chauvinistic rules that say you must hide from men and society at large. It's not in any way empowering or justifiable.

Your argument is based on a big fallacy. You assume that the "so called" Muslim countries are actually following the letter and spirit of Islam per its source materials (I.e. the Quran, and the authentic sayings of the prophet). There's deep wisdom in the guidance to society at large (both men and women) of dressing and behaving modestly which if followed would greatly reduce much of the suffering in today's societies. To understand this is important to be aware of how things not only motivate individuals, but about how the social behavior of entire societies is molded and changes by different factors. I truly believe the goal of all Islamic injuctions are exactly the same as the aspirations of any rational kind hearted person would have for any society - I.e. for peace and justice to prevail where each individuals rights are protected and they live a life of true contentment and true happiness, with the lowest amount of suffering.

It's also very interesting to read you state that the hijab is not about modesty (despite the woman in the video clearly saying it is) , but about "obliterating identity" so women don't get "empowered". Its seems by this statement you are equating the identity of women quite heavily with what the hijab covers. I think this mentality is the opposite of empowering women as your essentially telling women that their identity rests heavily on how they look and what they show. This type of messaging has been highly damaging to the self esteem of many young girls who are surrounded by unrealistic standards of beauty portrayed in social media. The hijab is empowering as it is a statement that my worth is not based on how attractive I look or how in tune I am to the constantly changing and unrealistic whims of the fashion/beauty industry, but is based on who I am as a person.

@@sadiq7700 ...And yet this video IS telling people what to do: "Why Muslims Wear the Hijab & Why You Should Too." ...And why should women be subject to different rules than men, I wonder? Why are men the ones enforcing these rules? Why are men the ones getting angry and punishing women when they do not wear the hijab? This has nothing to do with God. And are you seriously confusing self-expression and the right to bare your head like every other living thing on this planet (including Muslim human men) with the fashion industry? Really?? There is a middle ground between covering yourself and following fashion trends, you know... And are you seriously trying to say that the pressure to follow a fashion trend is more oppressive than the pressure to wear a hijab in Muslim countries?? lol. Please stop. By the way, the hijab IS a fashion... except instead of a teenage girl feeling left out with her peers at recess for not following the latest fashion like in non-Muslim countries, she will be verbally and physically harassed by society at large and possibly murdered for not wearing the hijab in Muslim ones. Take a look at countries that rank highest in equal rights for women. You'll notice the same thing: there is a huge range of diversity in how women in those countries dress. No one single way of dressing or single article of clothing could possibly resonate with every single woman. When women have the right to choose how to dress, they dress in very different ways because they are different individuals, and they know that expressing their individuality is the ultimate empowerment. That is why the hijab is an affront to individuality and empowerment. That is why men want to force women to keep doing it.

NOOO. You are saying women can prevent being raped or molested by wearing a hijab that is not true. I can tell you live in the west because if you went to places like parts of India, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, etc. where the hijab is enforced, you would see girls getting attacked who wear the hijab. Why didn't their "seatbelt" work for them? You are exactly defining victim-blaming which blames the victim of an attack for the actions of an abuser by saying she has the power to protect herself. That is not true. A woman or man is not able to change or influence the choice a person makes to attack them. If the attacker uses the woman or man's appearance as an excuse, or believes they should be attacked because of how they look, that is due to societal influences and not based on that victim. The victim didn't tell the perpetrator to attack them, so they cannot be blamed. Did you know sexual harassment is worse in the Middle East than it is in America? Have you ever gone to the Middle East? How did men react to you? The way men react around women is a reflection of how they are raised and what environmental influences they are exposed to, that includes religion. The victim was chosen by abuser because the abuser chose them in their mind. What you are saying is the same as saying someone who is punched is the reason they were punched. Did you know that muslim men use exactly what you say as an excuse for attacking non-muslim women? Check out the statistics of rape in Sweden. Almost 60% of the rapes that occur there are by refugees from muslim majority countries. Look it up, please. Sweden has one of the top highest rape rates in the WORLD. It more than tripled over the past 10 years, which began exactly when they started to allow immigrants fleeing war in muslim majority countries. I'm not saying to ban immigration, what I'm saying is that there is a clear link between what people are raised to beleive and the actions they take. It is not the victims who are to blame, it is the ABUSER. To blame the victim is to allow the abuser to continue on and say they did nothing wrong.

With all due respect, Can't help but comment on the hijab, I just wonder about the modesty. where I come from we'd call it body shame that you don't want anybody to see you. I'm sure there's some kind of religious component to it. that this is some kind of sacrament to God that you are keeping yourself covered because women are so special and shouldn't be just displayed out to everybody. I think about bikinis, swimming pools and the beach. I think of equal rights that if men get a run around without their shirt on why can't women. Where I come from men don't lose their mind if they see a woman topless or wearing a bikini. Maybe separating women and men is a good thing. Where women are so special that they need to be hidden away from the eyes of sex craved men were thinking all those disgusting thoughts. some would say the more you hide it away as if it's some hidden delight the more men would be crazy when they see a woman. As for me I prefer women to be equal to men, where they're not the special princesses and they can stand up to a man who's being disgusting without being a cry- bully. I think of old crusty East Texas ranching women. Most of them could probably beat me up. I think a flower power women who aren't afraid to speak their mind and say what they think. I think of women in politics who are straight up and have seen it all. I think that Disneyland with this little fairy princess stuff, that they indoctrinate little girls with is poisonous to women because it's more of that separation stuff making them weak and so delicate that they can't speak up because they're so offended. just some rambling thoughts of why I avoid most women because it seems like a big bag of offended worms.

Thank you for this video and you personal perspective on why you decide to wear a headcovering .It is every single persons right to believe and dress as they like. Dressing modestly for men to not rape you on a regular basis is not a way to live.Women should have the right to dress as freely as men without having to face harassment.Keeping covered for them will not a better world for our mothers ,sisters,and daughters .It showcases the problem men have with controlling themselves in everyday life in these parts of the world. It is sad to think girls from a young age need to carry the burden of not being freely themselves at school,restaurant ,mall all their lives in fear of being taken advantage off. I went to a Islam temple once and had to wear a headcovering. It was so uncomfortable and could not believe in modern day I was following an ancient tradition of modesty men had set for women ages ago.I have conservative Mexican roots ,where women at one point use to wear scarf around their faces.The fashion died out ,with time women began to work and step outside the shadows of their husbands. Moving away from a society that is indeed very patriarchal to this day had its strugless but it can be done.The reports of domesric violence,unequal education opportunities and arranged marriages in predominantly Islam countries speak for themselves on how men value women.In different parts of the world women have had to stand up and fight for their natural rights for ages .The fight continues in the Western world for equal pay as well as breaking glass ceilings ❤

Muslim women wear hijab because it’s a commitment and devotion to God. I’m sorry you see it as oppressive but some people don’t see it that way. Hijab teaches to be resilient because it doesn’t matter what society tells hijabi women, they keep wearing it to please God. For me that takes a lot of courage and resilience. And due to this reason, I respect women who wear the headscarf full-time. People like you see it as oppressive but hijab can be a beautiful thing. I find it beautiful to have a piece of the Quran in the way a woman dresses. Wedding dresses also have veils. Nuns wear a veil too. The other reason Muslim women wear the headscarf is because it’s like a uniform to get recognised by their religion and faith. A police officer, a nurse and a student get recognised because of their uniforms and other people know who they are by just looking at the way they’ve dressed. There are other benefits of wearing the headscarf. It protects the hair from UV lights, dirt coming inside the ears and it’s hygienic. Cooks and healthcare workers wear a head covering too.

Is the beauty of a woman without hijab then equal to the beauty of a woman with hijab? When I wear the hijab you can no longer see my hair, ears, neck, a portion of the sides of my face - and the pattern or colour of the hijab, because it is directly surrounding my face, affects my complexion negatively. Furthermore, because of the part of the hijab that covers the sides of my face - the overall surface of my face shown is less and this gives the illusion of my nose being bigger and mouth wider then they really are. My hair is tied up in a bun so that it doesn’t fall out from behind, and that aspect, along with the fact that it already covers a few millimetres of my face makes my head look bigger. The hijab affects not just the face but visually distorts an outfit, an outfit that might otherwise flatter a woman without the hijab. You think it’s only covering the hair, but really it has a much greater overall affect accumulated by all the subtle aforementioned details. You won’t notice because you’d have be really observant and think about it a lot, or you’d have to see a woman with and then without the hijab repeatedly (I.e. the few woman you are allowed to have access to the full beauty of either because you should be physically attracted to her like your wife, or, because it’s absolutely forbidden and unnatural to have physically attraction to said person, and so there’s no point in her covering up, such as your mother, daughter, sister, grandma, niece, etc…) But a woman who is well versed in wearing it knows very well that it’s not just about the hair. When my sister married her husband and he saw her without the scarf for the first time he was stunned, he kept staring and became sort of infatuated with her looks for a few days - that can be the extent of the disparity. Let me tell you from my POV, it’s sometimes very difficult to put it on my head, but I know the cause of this reluctance is very vain, egotistical reasons and not spiritual - I reflect on why do I want to show my beauty? What am I trying to accomplish? Why am I trying to have strange men look at me? And at the end of the day it’s a character building exercise, because it makes me question my intentions and observe my ego. There’s other stuff that makes the hijab painful to wear like western societal pressure to conform and the slew of attacks from the general media and people’s curious or judgemental gazes - its oppressive and the hijab almost becomes a flag of resistance to the culture and politics, and also it has taught me to resist conformity for the sake of conformity and remain loyal to my values and beliefs above all- but that’s irrelevant to your comment. My final remark, is that it’s very interesting how a single piece of cloth wrapped around the head could impact the character of the person wearing it, people’s impressions of a person and the external appearance of a person so much. It’s not like it’s a whole skin colour, or a physical deformity - it’s a removable, worthless, harmless piece of material some people wrap around their heads. Really goes to show the fragility of the human psychology.

Keep in mind I live in a very judgemental house hold that is quite biased but I rarely agree with their sayings, so I decided to do my own research. For one, you brought up the fact that many people develop insecurity and eating disorders from showing off their body and expecting a false appearance, but instead of promoting covering oneself up, shouldn't we be promoting body positivity? Also, I understand covering ones body, but why the hair? Is it like when men seem to be aroused by shoulders? I have heard true stories about girls who were forced to wear their hijabs, how can that be stopped? Finally, do you think there will ever be a time where Muslim women won't be told to wear their hijabs?
@maryamkidwai2543

Uhhh alrighty. There are studies that show that women who dress modestly in hijab never expect to look like societal expectations and are for the most part more comfortable with their bodies. The hair is also covered as its a pretty big standard of beauty. Of course there are situations of ppl being forced to do things cuz of family so as with many things its there with the hijab but mostly hijabis choose to do it. In fact for me struggling a lot cuz tho my mum is Muslim sge hates thr hijab and every time she sees me in it she gets mad and says horrible things but I have to power on. So parents lots of times do force their kids in diff things. Muslim women know hijab is an obligation from Allah so yhey will always be told by God and households will introduce it to them like any tradition is introduced to any child but ig as more ppl become more religiously and worldly wise educated forcing kids this way or that should definitely reduce.

Also, the hair covering is to make people know you are a Muslim, and yes, promoting body positivity is good, but also unrealistic at the end of the day. @@caterinaicyoung, God says that all his creation is beautiful, which means, you are beautiful regardless of what others think or what you think of yourself. And calling a human ugly is Haram. Again: The explanation given in Quran for hijab is : to let people know you are Muslim and to guard your modesty. And if a person doesn’t wear a hijab, how will you know they are Muslim. And if someone dresses inappropriately, they will attract the wrong type of men, that judge them for the way they look. And this will create short term relationships. Where women often end up heart broken and possibly pregnant. I remember there used to be “Perfect couples” I won’t say there names, but they were always trending on Instagram and KZbin. But then, they had the worst break up ever, name calling and shamming each other. They always posted revealing pictures. There relationship failed because it was about looks, ant not the person.

Thanks for sharing, a super educational video. Seems to be a bit of a logic tho, women can still be very attractive or even 'sexy' in a hijab, and wearing a hijab. From my own experience women who wear hijab tend to pay more attention to things like makeup and clothing, jewelry, etc, to say that you wear the hijab NOT to be judged on beauty, but rather your looks... well it's a bit of a lie.
@nadia.c5

yea your correct but the women aren't. Modesty is done as a whole, now I understand women who wear hijab at some point feel ugly because ones hair does frame your face and so when it's gone (that one aspect of beauty) they feel the need to enhance another, their face for example when wearing makeup or jewelry etc. But thats wrong when wearing hijab your not just covering your head but your body, makeup should be limited to natural makeup such as maybe covering your blemishes or completely bare-faced and jewelry kept to a minimum so if women practiced it like that for instance the women in the video being a great example of modesty then they would attract less attention and if men did their part we by lowering their gaze we would live in a beautiful world. We would also incline ourselves spiritually knowing we are abiding by God's words.

If that the case a KZbin channel introducing a brief ideas isn't an appropriate source, Muslims should contact any specialist to discuss religious matters or read about them in reliable books ..If it meant other people from other religions, wouldn't it be pointless to follow an Islamic commandment when you don't believe in the God of Islam or in Islam when you can wear modestly?

So hijab by your logic is the first and foremost religious symbol that has a meaning and a purpose within a religious context, where a girls/woman’s hair are considered “awrah”. It is an Arabic word that literally translates means something is “defective” or “flawed”. This “something” is the female body, which is considered to bring shame or cause temptation and sin. Hijab is treating women as sex objects that in any case should be blamed in order to not arouse men’s desires. Thus, the hijab is also a symbol of the opinion that women are responsible for men’s sexual behavior against women’s bodies. It is also used as a way to control and limit women and girls freedom and liberation on their own bodies, because they will always be viewed as sexual no matter what “including hair” and even sometimes face “which is a woman’s identity and IT SHOULD NEVER BE CONSIDERED SEXUAL” so this way of looking at girls and women and their responsibility for men’s sexual desires aka “victim blaming (which by the way plays a big role in encouraging and normalizing rape culture” is based on direct gender discrimination against girls. So basically, anyone who believes that women can determine sexual violence by dressing modesty has never met men. You can cover your whole body and they will sexualize your voice. You can say nothing and they will sexualize your scent and existence. It never ends. So do you know what happens next? Every part of the woman becomes sexualized. Their hair, their ankles, necks, calves, wrists, hands, etc...! This has the inverse reaction by sexualizing women even more. It’s more objectifying. When I realized that women in hijabs were also sexually harassed and raped, and with all of that people still tried to find a way to somehow blame her, I knew it really didn’t matter ever once of who we are, because people will always find an excuse to view as sexual. You can’t go out to say that women are responsible for men’s sexual behavior, this itself is misogyny, because you allowed the justification of sexualization of women no matter what. So at the end, what I want to say is that if I have to cover my body for a man to respect me, then he doesn’t see me beyond a body, thus he doesn’t respect me. And the same thing goes on for “if revealing my body or getting naked in order for a man to respect means that he also doesn’t see me beyond a body, thus he doesn’t respect me”. We are more than bodies that have to be “covered up or revealed”. This control over women’s bodies is so patriarchal, there is no point of covering up or revealing for sexual intentions. Covering up or revealing my body should never be for sexual intentions, whenever it becomes for sexual intentions, this itself becomes objectifying and injustice towards women.

Unless someone is a suicidal maniac, carcrashes don't happen because of someones inability to handle their temptations, but because of accidents and seatbelts are worn by both men and women and not just by women. The comparison is completely flawed! Another point in the video about the science that shows that parts of the brain show activity when men see women in bikinis is also flawed. Seeing activity in the brain and "acting" on that activity are two separate things, having that activity in the brain happening doesn't mean that you have to act on it or should act on it. Are men animals who can't control their urges and who can't understand the difference between impulses and actions. It paints a picture of men as lacking self-agency, the impulses they get, they will have to act on because that's how their brain functions. A third point is that it reinforces the negative stereotype that It's in the hand of women have terrible men acts towards them and that It's up to the women to become less attractive in the eyes of men, because men can't choose how they behave. The women who don't have burka, hijab or niqab, are they to be blamed for the actions of men because they didn't choose to wear modesty clothing? It puts the blame on women and it frankly makes me and other men seem like our brains stopped evolving past the "reptile brain".

@@johanharto5076 Johan Harto you missed the point of the example with the car. The point was we don't live in an ideal world. Accidents happen, we all do our bit and hopefully these happen less. The seatbelt for men here would be to keep gazes low and control your urges. And yes sure acting on your urges is different to having urges. But, we're human. We have a tendency to act on emotions. Again, it's a precautionary measure not a preventative one. 3rd, humans are animals. So yes sure we've evolved, we still have base desires. Your mental state isn't representative of humanity as a whole. This is not a personal attack on you and your view of women. This is a wider view on the subject. This doesn't put the onus on women to say by not dressing a certain way it's on the woman if she were to be objectified. It merely explains why the headscarf and modest dressing isn't 'oppresive' as some are led to believe.

@@JackCons not being able to control your urges isn't an accidental though. No one crashes their car on purpose, while sexually assaulting someone takes intent. Completely different situations which invalidates the comparison completely. Moreover, a seatbelt will help you in a car accident while a hijab won't do anything if someone decides to assault you. What a terrible comparison.

@@PurpleFiiilth lol you seem to have not got it. You've translated it far too literally. The idea of the seatbelt is to prevent harm. The idea of the hijab is to prevent an attack. Both are prevention tools, I'm not saying they work in the same way if you make a direct comparison the way you did.

@@JackConsat least, seatbelt can protect us after the accident. But, hijab can't protect woman at all when she meet the man who has the intent.
