My dude, your game shouldn't be so much "the perfect game" or a perfect representation of your nostalgia but an expression of you. In any case you should be proud to have gotten as far as you have. Fuzzites is very similar to a project I started, but it contained a more in-depth raising aspect, where you had a nursery for an egg, and different settings of the nursery would influence what characteristics the creature would have, like temperature and humidity, a few slots for special items like crystals, among other items you could find in the world. I wanted customizing, breeding, variety and growing/evolving. I also wanted mini games to build up stats as well.

You conclusion is perfectly summarized. Sometimes it's not really scope creep, but the fact that 99% of the time, the game we end up making just never properly captures what we wanted it to be in terms of the emotional connection we originally had to it as just an idea. Keep it up, I'm loving all the versions you're making!

I've had a couple of dream games. I wouldn't really call any of the ideas perfect though as my dream games usually suffer immensely from scope creep. All of my dream games became too large too quickly and now I acknowledge that if I even wanted to attempt to make them I'd need way more people and I'd also need to cut down on the project sizes. Hopefully in the future I'll be able to make the smallest of these dream games a reality, but first I need to becomes really good at making games. Overall great video, I'm looking forward to seeing what you make of your idea.

I imagine the worst part about trying to finish Fuzzities is that it's in an identity crisis (by that, I mean that it jumps from variation to variation because you don't exactly know what it's supposed to be). But this issue is already partially solved by having a base concept, and now I hope that the rest of the issue gets solved. I hope this experience won't be mirrored onto mine because currently I'm also having to remake a game from Scratch because the current version didn't work out. The main difference between your situation and mine is that my game has already proven to have a rock-solid foundation because of how much fun everyone including me had playing it, but it turned out that I reduced the possibilities so much that I can't extend the game beyond 2 minutes, so now I'm making a 3D version of the 2D game because the 3D would make (hopefully many) challenges possible that won't be possible in 2D, even with unchanged controls.

I also had similar asperations to make a game like Fuzzites. I drew my inspirations from the likes of the original digimon vpets, and I really wanted to incorporate farming mechanics like Stardew valley. I quickly came to realize many of the same things you did, and so I silently scrapped the project to continue honing my skills as a game programmer. One day I'll come back to this idea, and maybe by then I'll be drawing inspiration from you instead!

I really think that your idea of fuzzites really kind of works best if it isn't the sole focus of a game. I'm pretty sure that the reason the Chao Garden is so beloved isn't just because it's raising creatures, but that it's a different experience and feels like it's separate from the rest of the game. Making it so the fuzzite portion of a game can affect the other portion, whatever it may be, and vice versa seems like it would be the best way to execute it.

I think the MMO version had the most promise. Not necessarily the multiplayer platform, but the premise of having a little critter that grows in certain ways depending on what you do along side it to become better at solving certain puzzles/fighting a certain way. The puzzle-like combat is also very interesting. It could push the player to evolve their critter to perform different movements in battle to overcome increasingly difficult puzzle fights.

Hello fellow former chao obsessor. I was just scouring the internet for chao garden inspired games and I thought _someone_ had to have made something like it already. Couldn't find much though. Glad to find someone finally doing so. As for what you had asked, I feel that version 3 and 4 work the best. The final 3D-esque one looks promising but I can't comment much on it with how little there was. But I will say that it does seem like it would be fitting if you used that to emulate what made the chao garden work. A main game and then that little island to come and check on on the side. I had the same realization as you when playing Chao Resort Island a few years back. The chao garden doesn't work in a vacuum. Good on you for realizing that. Love the name Fuzzite btw

P.S. I can see that little island working with version 4 as the main little area where you keep the rest of your fuzzites as you go out to explore with the one you have following you. I think you've got good stuff that you can draw from all of your attempts here to make something great.

Just an idea, maybe instead of waiting for Fuzzites to grow you could have the main mechanic be exploration. Where the goal of exploring could be to unlock or find new Fuzzites, possibly even finding hats and other things that can be related to a fuzzite to make them more unique and special. To tie the idea into the breeding mechanic, how about only being able to explore certain areas with certain breeds of fuzzites? For example, a blue fuzzite could be a cold area fuzzite. Allowing the player to explore a colder area and find different items or fuzzites specific to a different area. (maybe the fuzzites you find just got lost and by bringing them back to your ranch, you're rescuing them possibly to return them to their natural habitat) Just a quick not very flushed out idea. However I hope you enjoy it or it at least gives you ideas of your own. Keep up the great content.

One of the creators of Nuclear Throne and Super Crate Box (from Vlambeer), did a talk a few years ago about making games. He said something to the effect of "the reason you can't make the game in your head is because the 'game' in your head is an idea --- not a game." Our minds do a really good job of tricking us into thinking that we have the whole picture, and that that picture is an accurate reflection of how it will work reality. But, if you stop to think about it, neither of those points are really true. Considering this wisdom could be applied to essentially *any* creative pursuit, I think that this was one of the most profound bits of wisdom I've ever heard...

Yeah I'd say you need some sort of regular game, and the fuzzites can be very rare creatures you can randomly find, win from competitions or get rewarded from quests, but they are very rare. Then the fuzzites maybe have some buffs, light red maybe gives extra fire protection or whatnot and follows you around. Then collecting and breeding to get one with better buffs would be a side project.

I think you should definitely finish your third version of the game. The top down one. I really love the idea of it being kind of like Harvest Moon or Animal Crossing. I think that one would be super successful. It'd probably be kind of like Slime Rancher.

I think you should make it a multiplayer, I really love the battle system so it would be cool to trade and battle other players. Thats what makes a game like Pokemon so fun for me, its the social interaction and the grinding to beat other players, it really gives the feeling of accomplishment. And that is what makes a good game for me.

I have been waiting like 20 years for another Chao Garden. I love the Animal Crossing like concept of fishing, farming, doing tasks and working in a little community and how that could affect the Fuzzites. Along with selling and eating crops, maybe you could use crops as power ups for your Fuzzites, bait for catching specific types of fish, or even a self power up? I imagined a 3rd separate component to the world which is the wild where you have to fight enemies top down like old school Zelda to get something akin to Chao drives and maybe find Fuzzite eggs on rare occasions or even use the Fuzzites to do or help you battle.

It's a cool idea and one that I'd love to see fleshed out however like you mention at the star, it's more of a side mission that is added to another game. So in a way you could add fuzzites to any game you want

that’s so interesting i’ve also always loved the chao garden from that game! i couldn’t even remember which sonic it was for the longest time, i rented it from blockbuster for a month when i was maybe eight but i kept trying to remember and described it to people… as like “the one where you can get chaos as pets and if you try to drown them they become water chaos” lmao there really was something special about it though! good luck on fuzzites i would love to play :)

My fav version is no. 4 The "combat system" is a cool thing, I would still build something like craftig for food. So that certain fuzzies only need certain crafted food. A few villagers or similar, time-controlled trees that can drop ingredients. Unfortunately I haven't played the Sonic game, but I can imagine that (like Tamagotchi) a survival mechanic would add some spice to the game.

I love exploration in games. This is what motivates me in any game. So I like the «gather ressources, explore and pet my creatures» the most. I am not an online type of player but this version was very cool too. Also very inspiring to watch and listen because I just starting my own journey with game dev and making a game, that I want to play, is so satisfying. But I see your point that the mechanics you like are not meant to be the main mechanic of the game. I will take this into my game design process. Very helpful and inspiring video.

Loved the video. Seeing the Chao Garden took me BAAAAAACk. I really liked the "single-screen" Game Jam version, the art style was "on-point" and it looked very concise. I could see that version of Fuzzites being an "idle-ish" game for mobile (a virtual pet I guess), or a sub-game within a bigger game, akin to the original Chao Garden. The "Big Game" could even be a 3D thing and then you go into an "in-game Game Boy-like apparatus" to play Fuzzites.

Dude, my game development journey has been one I have wanted to take my whole life since I saw my first guide book when I was 6, but I too have spent the last 10 or so years of my life trying to come up with a concept for a Chow Garden style game. It has been the Magnum Opus in the back of my mind forever it feels like. I fell absolutely in love with the Chow Garden, I have re-purchased Adventure 2 Battle on every platform it was ever released on (and sadly experienced all the unique bugs), and it has been my entire life's mission at this point to create an end-all game of this style; I have never been able to think of anything outside of a regular RPG-style monster raising game, or a simple love-letter style actual small Chow game and hope I don't get taken down... So needless to say I haven't wanted to spend my time on it with no actual idea... I feel like your version 2 may have been a little boring because you left out the mini-games! I guess you are mainly familiar with the Chow Garden from the original game? In Adventure 2 they also had mini-games that you could use the Chow in to compete against each other and earn medals. As well, I have always wanted to expand the Daycare element. Since a more garden-oriented game would need more to flesh it out, a place for the player to let the Chow learn skills would be a way of introducing items for the Chow to play with and not needed the player to litter their garden with toys; If the pet has the skill to do something, they will just spawn the tool or toy when their AI goes to do it. I have been considering working on one recently actually since I have started a new job and am looking for a passion project to keep me busy on the side. I am very happy that KZbin recommended me this video! I wish you all the luck with your projects, and not that I think this will mean much anyway, but if you would be interested in reaching out to other developers for help, advice, whatever, I would be glad to help in any way I can with the time I currently have available :)

I identify with this. I have my own dream game idea, and even after around 8 years, I still want to seek it. But for a long time, I couldn't manage to make it more viable in any form - from the game mechanics to the characters design. But I learned a lot of things, and am still learning. And I somewhat decided that I prefer a finished project that ends having some differences to the original idea, rather than a precious dream that will never make it into reality. Right now I know it's gonna take quite some time, and want to start smaller projects while progressing at the original more slowly. But bit by bit, I know it will come to fruition, and I wish to take the best out of this journey. I hope everyone there having difficult with their projects can have a nice journey on life while working in them too.

Good job man, glad you’re clearly enjoying the process! You’ve clearly improved a lot over time! Hey, if you want a game to maybe use as reference, have you ever played Slime Rancher? Despite the name, the ranch part of it is more of a secondary mechanic then the main focus of the game. Most of your time in that game is spent exploring the world and it's surprisingly good level design, so you can find new slimes for your farm.

Old vid but, this my favourite genre of game too. I always think that a "monster riser" game should run even when you are not paying attention to it. It is kind of a virus in your computer, with the difference being that it doesn't kill your pc, but it can keep doing it's thing even if you are not playing. That way you don't have to sit around doing nothing: you can set it up to do some chores (for example), go outside to walk for a hour, and then come back to see what it has done.
