Titanfall is magnitudes more chaotic than any other game. It requires an insane amount of skill, awareness, intuition and fast reactions, 15 minutes straight without a pause. For those who enjoy that type of controlled chaos Titanfall turns into a beautiful sandbox and for those who can't keep up it turns into hell.

I do think the release timing had a little bit to do with it's unpopularity, why learn a new type of play style when the old familiar Battlefield or COD style was there for the taking on a new release. It's human nature, people opted for what was comfortable. It should have been released after the honeymoon phase of the those BF and COD releases when people are willing to try something new. BTW after Titanfall's movement it's hard for me to go back to any other boots on the ground game.

Been a while since I’ve played titanfall, seeing this pop up in my recommended has me wanting to come back. War games is one of my favourite maps. For me though, that skill gap and freedom to explore different engagement options and play without limits is why I love it so much. I was bad when starting out but I also played lots of tf1 on my Xbox 360, I stuck to it and it is without a doubt my favourite shooter

The veteran players moving to Northstar has been great for the skillgap. I used to be super discouraged by the skillgap, but now playing on the default client feels way more balanced. I can finally play titanfall regularly again without just getting crushed the whole time. The servers are sketchy but it's easily worth it.

I know nobody will see this, and I’m late to the convo, but another huge difference that I feel like contributes to the difficulty for new or casual players is the fact that, in most shooters, hipfire is not an incredibly viable option unless its at cqb ranges. It took my a while to understand how useful hipfire was and chain it into my movement to combine both parts of “movement shooter.”

So I started playing Titanfall 1 in 2016, because I had just gotten my first console, and one of my mom's friends I asse got Titanfall 2 and was done with 1. I layer found out about it and started playing 5 years ago. I've played it ever since. It's what I grew up with. So when I began trying other shooters, it was difficult for me to get anywhere because I was used to a partner and movement. I love Titanfall, and I always enjoy seeing new players. Whenever I find a new player, I usually invite them to a party so I can help them. I don't think it's just the style or date. It's both. Had it released a month later it would have been a success. DOOM is also very different from other shooters.

Aside from the skill gap, I think it's the low time to kill. You really have to be cognizant of the mini-map and your surroundings because you can easily get downed a split second after you realize you're being attacked. I was aware of Titanfall previously, but came into it from Apex. I had to change my play style to primarily using SMG and stimpack so that I could have more time to react and move. Having 120+ FPS and playing in 2k for more screen real estate helped too. The closest game I'd played before Titanfall and Apex were the Unreal Tournament games with the strafing etc.

I'm a fairly new player myself. Heard Northstar client wasn't getting hit with DDOS attacks so I downloaded it. After the campaign, I booted up a game and got completely smoked before I even knew what was going on. It's definitely the skill gap like you said. So I'm running back into the gauntlet to get movement down like slide hopping and my aim in general

The Northstar is full of pros. Play vanilla, is playable enough again before going with the big boys.

i would recommend playing on vanilla servers, as the usual skill is quite a bit lower there. The normal servers arent getting ddosed since probably around half a year. well except for PvP, that crashes rather often around the 5 minutes left mark.

Vanilla is also full of pros . Identify the crew and just skip that match. They are sour and honestly you won't have a good time. Find games with no crews Play. (tfgg or something like that they are just ass )

I think its just a different time. High skill based games like geometry dash, trackmania, and this is also pretty niche but bullet hell games, all of these used to be super prevalent at a point or another. But soon we just started getting dumped with cod games and like gtaV updates and just more casual games and such, out the bum. People dont want the challenge i feel. They get smoked in a game and then just quit the game like thats that “this games ass” and thats the new mentality of it. We lose people cause, they dont have the drive to go actually poop on who pooped on them. Ofc this is all a maybe

The gameplay.... unfortunately has always been niche at best. The skill gap is indeed kind of big, but Titanfall the original? Holy shit, is that another ball game. Slide hopping is fortunately easier than bunny hopping in TF1 but not many want to stick around to learn it, there's still a lot to consider when learning it all... not only that but when they are getting slapped by someone that is all over the mechanics, they can easily be discouraged to even continue.

I completely agree with this when I first started i was getting extremely discouraged by the constant high skill players. But thankfully I'm stubborn so I kept playing and and I absolutely love the game

I realize I had it easy going into titanfall 2 for the first time in 2020. because of all the hours I put into the first I already had a basic grasp of how to use the movement system and how to effectively combat titans.

Man, it's definitely the mindset that makes them quit. After I finished the campaign I went to the multiplayer and got completely wrecked by a pro. He got +-60 kills that game, you left your spawn and you were dead, but I didn't rage quit. I just tried to do better. Nowadays when I invite the network to a private session generally 1 or 2 noobs join get smoked by me in a 1v2 and then rage quit, it's really sad those kids have no shame or honor to stay and want to learn how to get better.

They don't enjoy keeping getting stomped in every single game that's why. I've been playing the game since its launch although I moved on to Apex last year, I know every time there's a sale for Titanfall 2 some of so-called veterans will hop in the game trying to farm kills. Can't blame either group, since this is how it is for an FPS that's lost official support

I'm picking it up again since 2018 and the skill gap is a tough pill to swallow and I can definitely see how it pushes new players away.

it's a huge skill gap, as mentioned, and the movement system on top of the gunplay makes it. hard to get used to if you don't have experience with movement shooters. Even on controller its a complex system. with Northstar being the primary way to play nowadays, and the small community being primarily composed of vet players who have a strong grasp of the game and enjoy executing it, we run into this issue where it's almost unapproachable for new players. I've seen some servers that are designed for a newer experience, but never with enough population to really learn. I wonder if there wouldn't be a place for a learning community for the game?

Attrition is really the only mp Players vs players available and Frontier Defense, maybe the Control Points. Any other mode isnt playable for Xboxlive.

Noobs leave this game because it's a meatgrinder, people have been playing the game for so long that they steamroll noobs. Meanwhile people don't feel like taking time to adapt or to learn to get better simply because of the high learning curve. Only way I can see the game grow again is if Titanfall 3 comes out, which will bring in fresh and new players.

as someone who was introduced to titanfall through apex, the main reason i believe people leave titanfall for other games is the lack of player base now. yes the movement is difficult to master but the gameplay is so beautifully executed that it will keep you coming back for more, its just that fun. But for people that joined in late there just isnt a lot of people playing(especially on console, i had a day where there was only 500ish people on) so its like why would i play it when i cant get a game, when i could just hop on apex for example and get a game instantly you know

Hey, new player here, picked up Tf2 in the last sale and has been playing it since. I brought it for two reasons, I heard the single player campaign was one of the best of any FPS (which is true), and I was fascinated by the combined arms nature of pilots+titans (enjoy other games with vehicle combat, like Planetside 2). I decided to try the multiplayer even before finishing the campaign, and it was quite chaotic. Although, I think I got in with sever other new players, so I didn't feel to skill gapped. Anyway, I am feeling it more now, and don't feel like I can really keep up with pilot vs pilot engagements, so I focus on the titans, either using my grenadier weapon, my anti-titan weapon, or rodeoing to damage or destroy titans until I can get my own, at which point I can play the game more tactically and slow, playing around my cooldowns and reload. I also enjoy Frontier Defense. Besides the skill gap, and the somewhat chaotic pilot, titan dynamic I think another reason many new players might quit the multiplayer is that it constantly disconnects you. Another thing is that it (in my opinion) suffers from being an EA title, and requiring Origin. There's also a progress system that locks a lot of weapons away, and when you get them you have to level them up. While this isn't exactly unusual, it does make the other aspects worse.

well... the connection issues are not technically a problem with the servers, but a hacker, or set of hackers exploiting a flaw in the netcode used to set up lobbies and connections to EA's servers. which is why the only way to play the game at this point is to use the Northstar client, which does not use EA's servers. as for the progression system... yeah that is how progression systems work. you have to level up to unlock more things. it is an incentive to keep playing and explore different play styles. that being said, you can also spend in game coins to unlock things early and keep them unlocked after Regeneration. abilities, weapons, attachments etc... all can be unlocked early and nothing is particularly hard to get in the first place.

I also bought the game when it was for sale but only to play the legendary campaign. But I did try multiplayer and was instantly destroyed. To my surprise tho I was always somehow middlescoring. Ig this is what happens in older games, usually the only ppl that stick around are veteran players. The movement instantly sucked me in tho!

Well, the release date only influenced the sells for those who were waiting the other two games to come out. If you heard about TF2 in 2017 onwards, probably you got interested in the game, even if you already have one or both the other two titles released, at that crunchy time window. The campaign game is nearly perfect and should be a selling point already. So, I agree with you: The skill gap is MASSIVE. Seeing you, play and saying "I am not one of THOSE skill monsters", while you find enemies easily and land most of the shot, whilst in the frigging air, 1.000 km/h, is a good point reinforcing the argument that THE GAP IS REAL!! Hehehehehe!! Cheers!

I just started playing Titanfall 2 having got bored with Halo Infinite and the skill gap is ridiculous. The time to kill is so short against good pilots that it really takes time to get in to. Having said I'm really getting in to it and it's so different to anything else out there. I'd recommend this to anyone as a second shooter. Hopefully they release Titanfall 3 at some point.

@Sean ;] that's a bold claim but having played for a week or two now I can see here you're coming from. It's very addictive. My only complaint is that the time to kill is so short. There isn't the same dance that you get with something like Halo where you need a combination of shooting,grenades, melee and movement to come out on top.

When i got the game after about 20 hours i was able to be top 3 on the leaderboard almost every match and my go to weapon was EPG. And now after 120 hours and after a year long break i do not understand how. It seems so much harder now but i know im better at the game, is there skill based matchmaking or something? Or maybe it was the fact that it was right after a sale when a lot of new players started playing and i was just one of the better new players.

I'm a new player to Titanfall, currently in a middle of a hurricane so the video is really slow but judging by the thumbnail I'm going to assume it's about the skill gap I'm a halo player as you can see by my pfp and i can say I love Titanfall and I'm not a bad player in Titanfall i genuinely don't find it hard to adapt to the multiplayer, i currently left the game to play titanfall 1 to complete it's campaign as i play multiplayer and do some achievement hunting on it but after I'm done with that I'll come back to tf2 since my original game i usually play has ducked me in the grass multiple times and mcc isn't enough to keep me interested anymore I'ma stay playing titanfall 1 and 2 meanwhile 343 adds all the content they promised us halo players in launch wich will take some time

I still play Titanfall 2 on Northstar, but aside from being rekt by 999km/h roller pros, the actual issue I have with Northstar Client is that there's no incentive for people to play the game with everything unlocked. And it sounds weird, but this is the feeling I'm getting when playing on Northstar. I want to play so that I can have something to strive towards other than the raw mechanics. I too, am a victim to the incentives, I too, want to see those merits pop up and show me that I've unlocked this and that. I want to see if I can get 10 kills while in the air for that special skin, I want to do all of these things which ultimately push me towards getting better at the game, but with everything unlocked....I don't know but it's not the same. I know this might sound weird and it is, but all the unlocks being there and ready to use is putting me off because I want some that progression to which I've been conditioned over the years, and that in itself will make me not play all that much in the future. I've asked around, and most people share the same sentiment.

Since Titanfall’s movement is so essential, maybe casual controller players get frustrated. If their right thumb is always using jump and crouch, they can’t aim nearly as much. Always been a controller player, didn’t really get better until I had a PS4 Scuff controller so I could aim and jump at the same time without using a wack controller layout.

I just cant jump and zoom around the map like everyone does lmao. I also dont know how everyone zaps my face really quick with a CAR or Volt or Flatline while running or flying yet i just cant get any kill myself. I see an enemy player and empty my magazines and just dont get the kill. He rotates through the building and got a headshot at me with just a few bullets

I mean your right, Titanfall is just different and most people don't like different 🤷. Also what you were saying about Warzone and Apex being movement shooters but Titanfall is another level, I agree but Warzone is not a "movement shooter", it's more of a point and click. Also Apex honestly is for me anyways is 2nd to advanced movement to Titanfall its just not as accessible(don't think it's the right word) but it's like there in apex where the best players (take faide, taxi for example) do it but you don't see it a lot whereas titanfall you see it most games. Like titanfall has more advanced movement and i prefer titanfall but do you get me?

I, personally, always end my Titanfall 2 rounds by saying "I love you" to the other players, followed by a goodbye kiss. New players need positive reinforcement, especially after going through the trouble of installing Northstar just to play the g*sh darn game. Remember the three B's of Titanfall: Bring Back Bionicle.

Skill gap for sure. I'm a new casual player. I'm making the learning curve easier on myself by focusing on frontier defense to get basic mechanics down. But you also need to consider the fact that new players have other games that they are already good at and comfortable with. Apex, Warzone, Halo, etc. Sure I could embrace the suck and eventually get better at Titanfall 2. Or I could go back to what I know and get to enjoy myself far sooner. We do play games to have fun after all right?

It's interesting cuz ( no disrespect ) this guy isint going at those mach speeds and beeing some kind of god but I assume people just plain dont know some of the movement mechanics which not many are ussefull aside from Speedruning the campaign. Titanfall 2 is not cross-platform. If you play on PS4, you will only play against others on PS4. Same for Xbox, and PC. Also, the servers are mostly stable as the DDOS attacks have stopped for now.
