Are modern cars REALLY less reliable, or are we just stuck in the past with nostalgia goggles on? 🚗💥 Today, we’re diving into the reliability debate, breaking down the myths, the facts, and the truth behind modern car technology. From the Toyota Tundra’s massive recalls to the Chevy Silverado’s software glitches, are new cars actually getting worse? Or are we just hearing about every little issue thanks to the internet?
We’ll compare old vs. new, look at manufacturing changes, and go over the most recalled cars in recent years. Are modern cars too complex for their own good, or is this just the cost of progress? Let us know what you think in the comments!

@CarIQReport agreed, I've put 60k highway miles on mine. I've taken it on the backroads and pushed its limit too. I do regular maintenance too and I've not had a problem with it

I'm still running my 2015 WRX with original engine and transmission at 123K miles. Runs good. It is modified. But not modified for a ton more horsepower over stock.

Im a subaru owner and im not gonna defend subaru because yes, they've had their issues. However I will state facts. Who got number 1 for reliability recently? Whose brand new sports car is blowing up when driven past 86mph? Whose 1.5 liter turbo engines are blowing up in the millions of vehicles they put thise engines in? Whose brand is the reason why CVTs are well hated throughout the community? Whose brand cannot innovate and keeps on selling the same sports car since 2014? Whose brand is on the brink of bankruptcy and had to be saved by another brand? And i havent even touched the US, EU, and other brands yet

In the "old days" the odometers turned over at 100,000 miles and were pretty much done then, now cars over that don't automatically throw up a red flag

This video missed the discussion on maintenance intervals. We we had to do a lot more maintenance to keep those old vehicles running right. When was the last time any of you did a valve adjustment?
@zoomzoom8704
@zoomzoom8704 2 күн бұрын
Valve adjustments and the like are generally a '70s and older thing (Even most '70s cars had hydraulic lifters) in the '90s-00's most of those cards didn't have any of that maintenance and especially the Japanese ones would reliably go 250-300k would fluid changes and maybe an alternator or water pump. My first new car a 95 Saturn sc1 had 210k miles on it when I gave it to my mom 280k when she gave it to my sister for her first car, The '04 Mitsubishi outlander I replaced it with had 196k when I gave it to my sister because the Saturn finally got wrecked with 340k miles on it. My sister recently traded that '04 outlander in on a new outlander because the transmission was finally going out at 310k. I still have the Subaru I replaced The outlander with which has withstood 240k miles of extreme abuse and modification. My first car A 91 Tacoma I got used after its first owner made it 60k without an oil change and locked it up (pops "fixed it" by replacing the oil with diesel A few times to clean it out) I had to rebuild that motor at 210k miles though because the rings and bearings had gone. Meanwhile I've lemonlawed a 2014 Subaru. Me and my wife got matching Chevys in 2017, both of which had to be lemonlawed. My 2020 Chevy spent almost a year in the shop while The '20 Kia Has had two engines and a transmission under warranty. Sure if you've got a new car now you're not currently worrying about maintenance, but once that warranty runs out there are no more 200/300k mile trouble-free cars, That kind of engineering, quality, and reliability simply can't exist if a corporation is going to make more money. Hand over fist every year for their shareholders. We already peaked in quality. Now the only way for those profits to keep rising is to raise price and cut quality year over year

Great video guys. All brands have their hits and misses. Regarding the question of if they are getting more reliable...well in certain ways. Example, when was the last time you heard of needing to replace a water pump or hub bearing. Rarely ever with modern cars. BUT, the modernization of simple parts, such as Subaru's TCV has caused a slew of issues. This is one example of a simple part that worked just fine for decades being modernized for emissions causing car owners all kinds of headaches.

If a car is made of plastic and continues to get harder and harder to repair, that's not progress. Furthermore you could never have a modern car sit outside for 20 years and then get it driving again, old cars you can. New cars are meant to be replaced quickly

I appreciate the effort but no, that's not the problem, technological progress has always been plagued with gremlins that's true. However there is a difference between having, for example a physical connection of a pushrod between a door handle and the door lock compared to a switch with a controller connected by BUS to the ECU running a solenoid attached to the lock. One can argue that the electronic version is more secure, however it is entirely dependant on the security of the software running it. (which is poor). FOB's can be cloned and the car door can be opened by remote, technically requiring less effort than doing it the old fashioned way. In some cases, fuel injection, metallurgy, and computerized machine learned design have greatly advanced the "motor car", but there are instances where it's better to do it the analog way. Personally I don't want a giant screen on my dashboard, just a tachometer, a digital speedo and engine vitals. The stereo and climate controls don't need to be in my field of view if I can control them with switches and dials instead of a worthless touchscreen impossible to use with driving gloves on. Why have cars gone this way? Because of the market to which they are being produced and sold. Asia. Those owners prefer the backseat and are more interested in the In Car Entertainment. Traditional western drivers are not interested in a mobile TV studio with 11 cameras beeping at them every time they back up, they just need a reliable car to get to work, or a truck to haul crap. and the sales are slumping because all that tech is too expensive The car was a vehicle, it's now an appliance. I refuse to substitute my vehicle for an appliance.

I do like how newer cars have a smoother ride, better braking, and tighter, more responsive steering. Headlights are better too. Everything else is pretty much unnecessary. I absolutely hate and will deactivate all the features on today's cars that do the driving for you. I hate the lane correction and auto braking especially. Recently I had a loaner car while mine was in for a recall that had a digital dash that looked like a video game. As you're driving there are all kinds of things going on there with flashing colors and beeping and buzzing. Way too distracting! It's a miracle I didn't wreck the stupid thing! Anyways, point was technology made good improvements on cars but then went overboard and completely ruined cars (in my opinion)

@@mcgriff3195 It gets worse if you drive for long distances at night time. I had a 2020 Jetta Rental for 4 months and got migranes from the contrast fatigue. I was one of the kids who put an LCD screen in a 1990 integra, but soon after the novelty wore off, I realized it's mostly a nuisance. Almost all of the terrible recent design choices such as autostart were an attempt to make more money and steer consumer choice. Or to skirt emissions rules. By having 300K SUV's with autostartstop sold a company can now sell 25,000 over priced over powered premium cars such as a Hellcat, Mustang 5.0+ and Corvette. any attempt to blend the two design concepts increases the price tags for all cars produced. eg: Cadillac, AMG, BMW, etc...

You could've came to the conclusion that it doesn't really matter. I drive a 2003 Lexus ES that's been 100% reliable -- to a fault. With service records from the previous owner and another $5k by me TCO is about $70k over 24 years. On the flip side there used to be REALLY cheap cars. Try a 1984 Cavalier. $500 with a parts car.
