Luxiem enjoyed an explosive success and has made their historical mark in the industry by signaling the first turning point for male VTubers in the English scene.
In this video, I talk about why I think they succeeded, their potential effects on the industry, and how other VTubers and companies can learn from them.
Like and subscribe for more content! It really helps a lot. This channel's purpose is to archive important moments, history, and cultures in the VTubing industry. These include influential figures, memes, milestones, decisions, and trends. Basically I'm a historian but for VTubers. If you think I missed something, drop a comment!

True indeed. Not gonna lie, i dive on both group and i kinda can't really chill with the girls stream. Then holostars, i enjoy them for sure, but i kinda lacking on understanding on what they said, so yeah. And there's id, which, both somehow anomaly on its own for the respective group. call it nationality bias, but yeah i do enjoy knowing what they're talking and what on earth is happening. Their homiesexual humor (mostly Voxand Mysta) and their overall dynamic reminds me of a group of high school boys. There's that one person who makes the dirty jokes, one that goes along with it, one that needs saving from the group, one that is actually normal, and one that has no idea what's going on

As does most of Nijisanji, that's the difference between Holo and Niji, that's why I personally enjoy Niji livers a lot more than Holo idols, it feels like you're watching a human instead of a product. They are allowed more freedom of expression and aren't held to some superficial nonsensical standard in a virtual world. It's like watching normal streamers but with avatars instead of camera.

As a Japanese fan of Luxiem, I have to say that Oliver Evans played a great roll to let us know about Luxiem. Oliver is very fluent in English even though he is a member of Nijisanji JP, and did collabs with Nijisanji EN girls. The most important thing he did (I think) was he advertised the debut of Luxiem in Nijisanji Official Channel at the time of Nijisanji Mario Kart Tournament, where about 40,000-70,000 people were watching. Many Japanese people including me were not aware of their debut until he told us. Moreover, Oliver was one of the host at the debut, which made us interested in watching the streams. Literary he is breaking the barrier between JP and EN branch. I'm new to Nijisanji (since Eden-gumi) , this is my viewpoint, and not used to writing in English. Sorry if I made mistakes.

I can see where that would help. That announcement to the majority Japanese audience in that big collab stream, and Oliver being a recognizable face on the Nijisanji English stream co-hosting with Elira (I think), helped spread awareness of Luxiem as a whole for that side of the Nijisanji fandom. Small part, but it does help.

What I like about Nijisanji is that they don't really seperate their female and male VTubers. They can just naturally and organically collab all the time. In Hololive the female and male talents are strictly seperated. So in Hololive collabs between female and male are quite rare and Holostars just feels like a side product of the company that they don't want to associate with their female talents.

Personally feel this is the main reason^^^ I'm female and followed mostly Kuzuha and Kanae, but I also love some of the JP girls because I saw them play games with these two and I'm subbed to them and give them sp. I know it's the same for Kzh; he has a lot of male fans because he's just that funny, but let's face it most male otaku won't click on a male vtuber, so the mix gender collabs help introduce them to others.

@@digivagrant I feel like Ollie feels this too that's why she tried to promote holostars and even set up the among us Holo ID x Holostars collab. True, this what i feel. I feel like hololive company doesn't promote holostar enough. Because i don't even know they existed before. I thought that company only have girls so i don't follow since i'm a girl and i don't really enjoy girl contents. But then suddenly i found out about holostars. Hololive company kinda separate boys and girls. I like nijisanji girls cause they seem free. Nijisanji doesn't separate girls and boys. And nijisanji kinda seem more free with collabs, contents and such. No hate for hololive and holostar since they are great but i just don't feel like it when i watch them. I feel bored because lack of variety of collabs. Nijisanji always collabs not only among niji but also outside such as vshojo. But all in all, they all so great in their own way.

Biggest thing too recently in fact is Nina doing a off collab with mysta, vox and ike. It was some really good stuff and showed they bonded more genuinely imho and shared their impressions and also their fears they had. Especially Mysta who has said IIRC that his introversion was something he always worried about and wasn't too big of a fan of big collabs because of it. I love that he tries tho to change that with recent streams and Ike supporting him during the Among Us collab to help him have his turn to speak was honestly very beautiful. He and all of Luxiem and now Noctyx have given literal 120% in everything they do.

I think another great factor for their success is that, it's not that their unhinged and very laid-off feel was exclusive to them. The whole of NijiEN has this lax feeling that you are just hanging out with a friend and not this professional under a contract, SPECIALLY in their crazy collabs. Hell, even if Luxiem still interacts with the community more, the EN girls were already pretty big into it too. Seriously, look for almost ANY clip that has Nina on it... You WILL see her in the comment section. So when Luxiem came and just added to that feeling tenfold... It got traction since it basically made the whole of EN better for just being there. So I'd say the whole "family" dynamic that NijiEN has is also one of the helping factors IMO.

Tbh, I wish channels would translate entire vods for non-english nijisanji streams because I love the family vibe that I find in the EN streams, and just the mannerisms of the non-EN streams give me the feeling that it's just Nijisanji as a whole that's like that. I loved that one Phasmo collab with Petra, Selen, Uto, and Chigusa because there was basically live translation non-JP speakers through Petra. something i noticed that i really like with luxiem is how well the characters fit the people behind them, especially with their voices and personalities. their voices fit their designs really, really well--you don't have to be an english speaker to be intrigued by the way they all talk, and i think that's really important. no one would want to sit and watch someone speak for several hours if they didn't love their voice to some degree. well done on nijisanji's part for casting such talented people. i also think the way their roles and personalities coincide can even serve as something to laugh at when they dont exactly align (e.g., mysta being a "naturally born genius detective" who's slow and comically dumb sometimes, or luca being a "scary and intimidating mafia boss" who radiates the energy of a lovable puppy). its so interesting how well they can still pull off playing their characters even when their natural personalities don't align with how their character "should" act. it feels like a charming twist on the tropes they have to work with, and i think everyone loves it when characters go against the trope a little. its just so fun. i love them all. stream hope in the dark edit: also! i wanted to mention something in addition to luxiem attracting JP/CN fans to EN. ive noticed how luxiem encourages non-native english speakers to practice english more, which is really good! they're very supportive and even make efforts to praise non-native english speakers for trying their best with the language, which is heartwarming. ive also started practicing japanese more after watching ike and shu, and im sure im not the only one. its like two worlds that were separated by a language barrier are colliding, and im happy to see it.

I have to add one element that makes Nijisanji pumping out waves easier for the viewers. The ammount of collabs and the number of people on each collab, as well as impromptu collabs on every channel, makes it so that you can start by only focusing on one streamer, and then finding out who you like by watching collabs on their channel or channels where they appear. I feel like with Luxiem the amount of collabs increased exponentially, or at least it feels that way since NijiEN increased by 50% at the time (now 50/50 male and female, doubling in three months). There's also the main channel collabs, where everyone from the branch participates in a game show or competition of sorts, allowing them to show their personalities to the viewer-bases of all the other members. Of course this isn't the reason Luxiem got popular, but I believe that's how they can debut a massive number of talents constantly, and why it can benefit everyone else.

It was pretty evident that Cover didn't support them much and as a result the overall impression of Holostars even under Holopro fandom was bad. It's better now for sure, but it's a little heartbreaking that them being guys wasn't the main thing holding them back, it's that Cover didn't believe in them and they had to fight against that and they still have to fight against that. It's only recently that Cover has been up front about Stars support. I was shocked that they were included in the 3rd fes art. And more of their staff has been speaking openly about how Stars is part of Holopro, but why did it take two years? They all had to fight to get over 100k and it didn't need to be like that. It didn't need to be constant "Is Stars even part of Hololive?" EN gen might be the push they need. I am not really sure about how well Gen 4 will do if Cover continues to take the chicken approach. But hopefully with EN they actually try something new.

I feel like Yagoo really wants to Holostars succeed every time I see him retweet any thing Holostars is doing, different from the girls (they are already pretty successful themselves), Now that Holostars are doing more Collabs with NijiJP livers, they are gaining a little bit more of eye on them, specialy our Son with his collabs with NijiJP girls and Hololive ID. I really wish Holostars succeed, I really hope Cover go back a little and starts marketing Holostars being streamers and not Idols, this will give them much more freedom, I feel like Idols are so restricted in their bubble.

My top 5 reasons as someone who did watch holostars and NIJISANJI JP male talents before nijisanji EN came into the picture: 1. The BL potential (I'm betting on this being the reason they attract so much japanese, Chinese, etc attention) 2. They are different enough between each other to not feel like the same person copy pasted but similar enough to feel like a group of friends. 3. Marketing and innovation (fresh male industry vtubing industry and debut song obviously since it allows you to see the talent already in a short and clickable video) 4. Community (i didn't have much faith in them at the start but the clips brought me in) 5. Character Design (they have to be hot and memorable enough of course)

For me, it was their personality and genuineness lol. I didn’t really care about them before even though they have good looks because I’ve seen many male vtubers with good looks. Sure, they’re handsome but what I was looking for is entertainment. Apparently, they’ve got interesting personalities. I also like the fact that they don’t hold back and are not afraid (it felt genuine). They’re not even afraid to insult each other lol (may it be male or female). What made me fall into the hole so much is that they all interact like a family. I feel like another important factor is how Luxiem seem more caring towards the fans. Members like Vox, Ike and Mysta constantly remind the fans that they shouldn't donate too much if they are struggling financially, they address the dangers of parasocial relationships, and sometimes bring up the importance of taking care of mental health. It feels like they truly care about their fans and that they would put their fans's needs above their own. This selflessness adds more to how lovable they are because they aren't always just goofy and silly, but they also have serious moments that make them seem down to Earth.

holostar has hard dedicated JP to EN clippers, even more so than NIJI JP mind you. You have to search it though. It is just that if you compare it to hololive clip and its popularity, then nothing can beat that. We are pass the stage to compare everything to hololive because it is a beast on its own. Try and look at other competitor instead. We have plenty in the vtuber market. Unless you want to speak JP clips.. then Niji is a beast on its own, but then again Niji is the beast in JP so holostar does not have a chance in that department.

People like ironmouse, rpr, Shoto, the other Vshojo girls too, and other indie vtubers have been welcomed to collab without much incident, talk through DMs or on twitter. I will not say they don't have contract restrictions except for privacy of information, they became so lax and open to their own livers and fans back when Nijisanji Resistance was more of a Union from JP members(mainly founded by Chaika and Shiina) rather than a meme that it has ended becoming(although the members are still able to revive the movement if they wanted to). NijiReji really talked about their fellow livers concerns, issues, and as well as their own shenanigans to be heard by the management about stuff that was considered way too restrictive for Nijisanji back then. So in the end it really became a lax crew and more communication between staff and talent.

The collabs with the JP, ID, and KR branches help, as is the fact that most of them are multilingual, really makes them easy to get into. Wanted to add more to this, by mentioning Nijisanji JP Boys' Fans and clippers. Before Luxiem debuted, Nijisanji boys had a LOT of overseas fans, not as much as holo fans, but still a really big amount of overseas fans, and the thing connecting the male JP Vtubers and the overseas fans are the clippers. Most of these overseas fans didn't know Japanese so they mainly relied on translations to be able to catch up and watch said JP Vtubers. Because of this language barrier, most of the time fans would watch translated clips more than the streams themselves, with the exception of fans on twitter who can get access to live translations. This separate made watching the JP boys a bit harder than what is wanted, and this is where Nijisanji EN comes into play. Because the NijiEN Vtubers are already set to English on default, the already pre-established Nijisanji JP Boys' fanbase, FLOCKED to Luxiem. All the international fans, from ChroNoiR's to Gaon's, basically ALL of Nijisanji Boys' fanbase finally had a specific set of people they can call home. And with this huge amount of fans, there comes a huge amount of clippers and sharers on standby. This amount of clippers paired with the boy's absurd clippability practically SKYROCKETED their fame and virality. Not to mention that they are literally HOT BOYS. If the world learned anything from K-pop it's that to never underestimate a fanbase primarily made of simping girls. While Nijisanji JP Boys already had a good bunch of quite horny fans, the international fans were quite protective against these. There was once huge issue regarding simping and chat etiquette among Nijisanji international fans. Because of this issue, a lot of fans were over enforcing rules which led to practically gatekeeping (ehem cnr stans) a bunch of people from even starting to like the JP boys. But because Luxiem told everyone from the very start that they don't mind, everyone just went wild and had a great time. And because of that openness more people are finding Luxiem.

THIS. You said all the missing points I wanna say but better. Girls can simp as hard just like boys do, if anything, female fans are the most loyal fans one could ever ask for. Female dominated fanbases from my observation are really good at creating content for themselves from fanfic, fanarts, and other things, thus being a free marketing force to spread them even more. The thing that dragged me to Luxiem rabbit hole was the clip when Luca rickrolled Mysta with the recorder and now here I am 2 months being a member for Mysta's channel.

I couldn’t agree with this more because that’s literally what I did. Found Chronoir during Covid through a translated clip of Kanae playing Genshin, thought ‘Well this is kinda strange but I guess I can get used to the whole virtual avatar because well, it’s just a streamer not a character,’ and it all went downhill from there. I would pray for International Collabs with what Nijisanji had at the time, but still yeah relied on translations and even watching streams live with limited Japanese skill. Was super excited when Niji En was announced and absolutely ECSTATIC when Lucien was announced. As much as I love Chronoir, it’s just sometimes hard to fully enjoy it when you’re not getting the full picture (Still don’t really know their complete lore story lol) and yeah, people definitely underestimated the simp power of women, which if we were to really pick apart may have to do with the stereotype of ‘anime and video games are only for nerdy guys’ slowly disappearing as it becomes more mainstream and more companies make money off of it. If I had to add one comment to something, maybe it’s not really gatekeeping over rules but more 1) The culture and etiquette differences of what is allowed on stream and by the fans and 2) I just don’t know enough Japanese to really dig and find material for fans of the JP boys and even if I do not always a guarantee I’ll understand it. So it’s just unfortunately a big barrier in terms of something built for entertainment. Anyways, so glad people feel the same way I do. Female fans are here too! Let’s all support Luxiem + Nijisanji EN and have a blast!

as someone who learned of nijisanji through kanae and chronoir, i don't think it really stopped me from liking the jp boys. it's just that, in the jp circle, you are expected to focus on them and what they're streaming as opposed to simping for them in the stream. you are still allowed to simp, but only in your social media account, not the stream chat. and i get it, because you wouldn't want to see someone go off-topic while you're talking about your interests/important stuff. they and the japanese viewers will view you as rude. the jp circle very obviously has a different culture to english culture, there are a lot of unwritten rules in the jp side, which aren't really hard to understand if you get the point: don't go over the boundary and treat the streamers with respect. that includes not simping for them like they're a sexual object in their streams. it's good that the en boys consented to having those kind of horny comments, but i personally find it tiring seeing a bunch of people being horny and talking about how they'd like to be fucked by the streamers in chat. it's why i usually don't open livechat if i visited vox or mysta's streams since theirs tend to be horny and more nsfw.

What I'm about to say might be a bit off topic because it involves Nijisanji in general (or rather, EN + Mika because those are the ones I know of and watch), but I think also played into the multitude of reasons why Luxiem got so popular: As a bi girl myself, I adore how in Nijisanji lots of streamers are actually pretty darn open about their sexuality. Admittedly I know only the EN branch and Mika from ID, and so I have only heard of how open-minded are the other branches and thus I can't speak for them, but even considering just the ones I know... there are quite a LOT of them who did not hide their sexuality at all. Out of the top of my head, excluding fanservice with fellow streamers: -Finana (Lazulight) explicitly said she's bi -Mysta (Luxiem) explicitly said he's bicurious -Vox (Luxiem) has afaik mentioned multiple times what he likes/finds hot in both guys and girls, and takes extra care to include male fans too when he delivers fanservice in some of his solo streams -Mika (Nijisanji ID) has often mentioned finding girls and guys hot (even in her solo streams, so no shipping involved) -Fulgur aka Fuuchan (Noctyx) is a fundanshi by his own admission, has stated multiple times his love for men and women, and had two very famous danmei (chinese BL novels) + Saezuru (a very very VERY explicit yaoi manga/anime) listed at the top of his favourites list in his debut -Uki (Noctyx) had his whole debut "Likes" list absolutely filled with BL media. There are probably others, but those are the ones I can remember right now. All of this of course makes them more interesting to both fellow non-het people - because they're relatable - and shippers, and so it contributes to popularity spiking up.

I know this is soooo late but I have to agree with what you said. And this is my own opinion but it was mentioned in the video that vtuber fans tend to also be anime/idol fans which has a lot of shipping, and also people with various sexual orientations that don’t get to see themselves represented well at all in anime or in the idol community. Having openly bi/gay people is what can easily make someone jump on top of the streamer which usually leads them to the other members of the company that are usually very open and genuine about their own sexuality. Idk, from someone who use to be really into kpop idols, It’s just very nice to see that nijisanji en doesn’t have a leash on to yank them back or cut them loose for mentioning their sexuality and interacting with the opposite sex. They feel like a real group of friends without ridiculous limitations.

I think that's interesting about Nina is something she said during her Noctyx stream. She said that both she and Fulgar said they wanted to be niche streamers where they knew they weren't going to appeal to everyone, but they wanted to create a community that liked specifically their kind of content. And the fact that even when she said that she got accepted and debut really spoke to me about Nijisanji as a company. I understand that Nijisanji is still corporate, but if someone who is trying to debut through you says they're not going to make the most money for you, but they have a lot of love and spirit and you still give them that chance...? Cover/Hololive still has time to catch up with Niji if they want to start producing English speaking male talents. Although, potential male talents may not be attracted to Hololive if they feel they cannot comfortably interact with the female talents. I think it should be mostly safe for the HoloEN girls to collab with males since none of them sells the girlfriend experience, hence toxic simps for HoloEN are not as many as JP branch. The same cannot be said for Holo JP. The number of Holo JP talents that can confidently collab with males without major backlash is really small. Nijisanji really struck gold with Luxiem. Yeah, that's the biggest hurdle they'd have to face in even getting applicants for a Holostars EN. They can point to the few interactions with their JP senpais being able to comfortably interact with a few HoloJP talents (Fubuki, Matsuri, Miko, Roboco, and Towa from what I've seen), as well as being able to collab with all of HoloID with no issues. The moment when Luxiem grew up and impacted me was when they did their first collaboration together on PROPNIGHT, that's when they showed their chemistry and you could seen all of their personalities, I don't think I've ever seen a funnier stream than that. As you said, they are themselves but within their characters, when you see their models you expect a certain personality and with them you receive what you expect! Mysta being chaothic, Vox being a sugar daddy, Shu being naughty but also a good boy, Luca being a complete sun, Ike being the smart and sanity of the group.

It seems to me that what makes a good vtuber is for them to be themselves while also being in character, like they're playing a character yes, but it's their own personalities that they're showing, it doesn't feel like they're just putting on a fake personality or acting, it feels like they're relaxing and being themselves and I think that's what people love about them. People like to relax and be entertained by their reactions, interactions and antics. Not to mention Luxiem are very real and relatable and interact with their viewers, giving words of comfort and advice and even telling their own personal stories.
@NevaRthelesser
@NevaRthelesser 2 жыл бұрын
AGREED maybe it's because how they presented themselves in their lore videos that show up in the beginning of their debut streams so that we can know what to expect from them? Example: Shu's lore video consisted him of just saying 'eeyy' while giving out narration for lore and that sort of made the fans have this idea that his character is going to be someone who has humor and we can enjoy (tbh the entire lore video for me was endearingly ridiculous) and we got exactly that. It feels natural as well, like it's his real personality and it is. Same thing for Luca, literally the first thing we hear from him as we dive into his debut stream is a deez nuts joke. I also find it endearing how he unironically says pog and sadge behind cameras too. And someone from Nijisanji (I forgot who) said that his character persona was very similar to his behind camera personality so there's that. MAN IT'S SO INFURIATINGLY HARD EXPLAINING WHY THE LUXIEM MEMBERS FEEL LIKE THEIR BEING THEIR REAL SELVES WHILE ALSO BEING IN CHARACTER. Okay I think I got it. It's very hard to know when they're acting as their characters and when they're not because the character and the real person seem like they are one and the same. It doesn't feel fake like some other vtubers. Luxiem members are vtubers who you can enjoy both as a fictional character and a real person at the same time, while knowing where the line between fictional and real lay.

I found Luxiem in my worst time. And they kinda save me. Maybe this gonna be kinda biased, but if you ask me why I like Luxiem? Tbh idk. Like their personalities is not like the first too like there's so many different people that are like them before but it is a breath of fresh air to see a Vtuber that chaotic in a while. And Luxiem personality compliments eachother that's one of the aspect that make them so enjoyable to watch. Like the biggest on of them are Vox and Mysta literally born to be entertainer. Vox will just threw a ball and Mysta will take it. And Ike's role in the group would be the one who keep them on leash, so they don't get too crazy. Shu is like the older brother character like sometimes he is chaotic but sometimes he tried to stop the chaos that the other member makes. And he legitly feels like a really nice guy because how he often helps and support the other members. Luca is... Luca. What should I say? Luca is Luca. He is kinda a wild card I guess, because he is kinda in his own world pogging and maybe thinking the next deez nuts jokes. I think at this point Luca is Luxiem's mascot being that Lucy is canon now. And the way that they really sounds like guys hanging out together even if they're just met. They maybe not the Seisoest wave but they really make us feel like homies. Now that noctyx has debuted, nijisanji has also found the formula to success in the mainstream English-speaking fandom. It's fanservice! And most importantly is that they utilize a platform like Twitter to the fullest. If you see the boys' interaction on Twitter you would understand the hype, and the most successful on there is the one causing the most chaos. Like Mysta causing much chaos, there is Alban. And I feel like the Vox and Fulgur rivalry also helped a lot. Twitter allows viewers to take a sneak peek into the lives of the NijisanjiEN livers, adding to the relatability of the Vtubers. And with the introduction of Fulgur and Uki, who quite literally simps over each other and their senpais, the community is now even more exposed to the shipping part (which these two people actively encourages and engage in. This worked extremely well in the MCYT community with the most popular ships there) which means more people are gonna come and make even more art. I wasn't interested in nijisanji when Luxiem first launched, but after seeing their Twitter shenanigans I dipped my toes in just the right time to see Noctyx's first debut on Twitter and see what they were like, I'm now a big fan and have to say, Twitter is one of the keys to NijisanjiEN's success with how the livers are always engaging with the community.

I feel like no one really talks about the other successful Japanese male Vtubers. People like Utai Meika, Shibuya Hal, Gachiman V, Virtual Gorilla. However, they definitely fall more of the gamer side of streaming than the idol one, and so most of their success is more due to male viewers than simps. I really haven't seen a case where male Vtuber idols have taken off maybe other than MonsterZ MATE. Where the real popularity in male idols online, and where you'll find most of the Japanese female simps, is Utaites like Mafumafu, Soraru, Strawberry Prince. When they stream games, they can get viewerships in the 30-40k range! But it's up to you if you'd consider them Vtubers, since their main focus is music and the body behind the avatar is acknowledged (even if the face is covered). So while it's really great to see Luxiem and Noctyx do so well and are definitely breaking records in the EN community, I feel like it was only a matter of time before there was a breakout, and I'm really glad the boys were able to reach these levels of success and get more people talking about male Vtubers! Before I found out about luxiem, I found myself enjoying the translated clips of Chronoir, kanade Izuru, and Astel Leda. However because of the language gap, I couldn't really watch their streams, so I resorted to supporting Kanade and Astel by listening to their covers instead. I myself dont know when I started to watch and enjoy Luxiem, but the next thing I knew, I was already rushing to do my school activities to watch their streams and shared them with my friends. I wasn't such an avid fan of vtubers, only liking Astel, Kanade, Kuzuha and kanae, whom were all jp. I didn't even bother searching if there were en vtubers. Because back then, I was crazy about reading manhwa/hua/ga. But the moment I found Luxiem, I was watching them more than I was reading, and again, being a fujoshi, it was more or less a hit two birds with one stone. I didn't enjoy luxiem because I was fujoshi, at least it wasn't the main reason. It was because of the boy's personalities. Watching the boys freely interact with their fanbase, and saying whatever they want without having to be restricted, gave me joy. It gave me something to expect rather than just waiting for new chapters to read. I have so much to say about Luxiem. But its no wonder they became so successful, tbh, you forgot to mention the second thing about what made Luxiem skyrocket. The boy's personalities and interaction with one another. I’m actually really happy someone made a male EN branch in a company. As a female who isn’t that much of a simper, it was harder for me to find a male vtuber I liked. I had switched around from trying to find favorites, and the ones I did, I did not have enough knowledge of Japanese to understand anything they were saying or indie vtubers leaning hard into the “cutesy/simp/romantic” vibe to get the girls (this isn’t always a bad thing, but too much of it drives me away). Hololive’s Myth was cool but I only really like Cali because I really liked her music and she seemed really chill, but I never got into her fully. Just watching clips from time to time. The thing that really got me into Luxiem besides the chaos was specifically the fact that they are treated as streamers rather than idols, so they don’t have to cater towards that if they don’t want to, and when they do, they can do it however they wish, which in my opinion makes interactions more freeing and organic. Plus the community seems much more friendly and caring for the streamer than they first appear. Honestly, I think that’s what caught me off guard the most. Ike Eveland and Fulgur Ovid are my favorites so far, because they both seem like people I could talk to and hangout with when they stream rather than simp for. (Even though they seem like complete opposites of each other). That and I wouldn’t mind donating to either of them at somepoint. Anyway, these are just my opinions. Take them as you will. :)

I've watched NijiJP vtubers especially Kanae and Kuzuha altho their streams are really fun to watch, not understansing a thing they are saying just gets to me and instead of enjoying, it somehow drains me after a while. Was very thankful for the clippers putting subs on their vids. The biggest plus in Luxiem is that I can understand and truly participate in their streams. Laugh and die out of simping. That feeling of being in the moment with the boys and their respective fans. It's totally fun. It's like watching a group of friends hanging out together and doing silly things that can make bystanders laugh and smile. And also because they are just being so much themselves. The way they talk unhinged but not disrespecting anyone in any aspect is one charm they have. They aren't strictly sticking to their "character" and lore which makes their interaction to their viewers and fans and members very natural. They are like the friends anyone would love to have that's why many people gets pulled in Luxiem

I think one reason luxiem is so successful is because everyone has a pretty different personality, hence they appeal to a larger group and variety of people. then through collabs, the fanbase is shared among the other members and hence increasing their popularity

Good analysis. Luxiem is definitely a breath of fresh air when it comes to the male Vtubing industry, and I definitely look forward to seeing how things evolve from here. I personally didn't really pay much attention outside of being aware of the existence of male vtubers like Kuzuha, but these guys managed to actually catch my attention and some view time as well. Outside of Haachama I don't really watch much of Hololive anymore as I mostly watch Pomu and Selen myself. I definitely prefer Nijisanji's strategy of just be a streamer not an idol versus the idol culture of Hololive, and as a company I'm definitely won over even with their overwhelming cast of streamers. Keep up the good work! Even your less polished videos that I've seen are quite good with a fairly clear and well thought out in the ideas presented in them. I look forward to more!

They said they're not replacement for the girls' real life and the girls deserved much more better IRL. They encourage the girls to be better. THAT is what I called gentleman. By the way, I think that encouragement attract more girls though, lol. Talk about suffering from success. I'm glad NijiEN has found success with their male Vtubers, but I do have to correct some misconceptions when it comes to comparing them to Holostars. Holostars started from almost less than zero - it was not idol culture but EXPECTATIONS from fans of a company that had up until then had an all-female no-male talent landscape. That's about a year and a half to get fans used to a certain idea that Hololive was a Yuri paradise safe from men. Almost like Love Live or Bang Dream. Remember the backlash those properties received from even the IDEA there were male entities in those worlds? Yeah. People blame idol culture but it's really just toxic anime otaku culture. So Holostars had backlash before any of the talents debuted. Miyabi's first live stream had only 10 live viewers, most if not all of whom were either vaguely interested or outright antis. As you can imagine, his first stream wasn't exactly great. Could even be called a disaster. And for whatever reason, general outside consensus within a short time was decided that Holostars were losers without anything interesting about them. Probably trying to greedily grab female otaku money but that's it. Not true in the slightest, but that's where their reputation started. No hype, no excitement. Just resentment or boredom. Lasting at strong negative levels for almost a year. And remember: most of the online audiences at this time were male, not female. Even in Nijisanji. Two and a half year later, even as a now proven successful group, there is still a general negative or dismissive opinion about Holostars from the outside. This is info I've learned from JP fans who once thought that way but now think differently, who see how weird the negative popular bent is. And no, it isn't the idol thing. Nijisanji male talents are assumed entertaining, Holostars are assumed cash grabs. Despite their actual content being almost the same. And no, despite assumptions, one group is not more or less seiso than the other. Holostars are doing extremely well despite that, if you look at their growth as if they were an isolated company. 100k for everyone within 2 years? Not bad. But despite Cover's support, they had to go it alone. No riding off of Hololive's success. Nijisanji JP's very first wave was mixed gender. Holostars began a year and a half after Hololive. See how expectations play into that? Yeah. NijiEN on the other hand, already had a fanbase ready and waiting to welcome their male talents. Expecting them. Whether it be the Japanese fans excited for their own "exotic" overseas Chronoir (+other popular male talents etc) counterpart, oversea fans of the Male JP talents, or English-only Vtuber fans who were curious if they were going to be any good. Plus, marketing! Anycolor now has far more money for things like flashy original songs than Cover did back in 2019 to support Holostars, as well as far more potential audience now than then. It's not really a surprise Luxiem became a success so quickly

Thank you! I'm so glad to see someone here commenting facts to help out those who don't know. Personally, I do not like the comparison of a "wave" to a literally "branch" plus even more so when one is "EN" and the other is "JP". That aside, Holostars is thriving just fine. While it did take about 2 years for them to take off, a lot of longtime fans of Hololive Production (which houses ALL the branches) have already explained that it also took Hololive about 2 years to take off as well. If I can just throw in my 2 cents, some of the 1st biggest achievements in the JP vtuber community was made by some of the members from Holostars. I also think it was because Holostars had so much blacklash for just existing in the beginning that it really pushed them to go out of their comfort zones and do their own networking. If anything, the connections they've made is amazing for such a small group that's only growing now. EDIT: I'm not trying to rally anyone to subscribe to Holostars or anything related of the sort. I'm just trying to explain that despite Holostars being small in comparison, they have achieved a lot of things that I thought a powerhouse like Nijisanji, who has been around longer and has more connections domestically, would achieve first but it has already proven that it is not always the case.

Niji EN was a major step in the direction of popularizing Njijisanji in he west, but Luxiem was *the* great step into that direction. i think another reason why they got so popular was the way they brand their branches compared to hololive. nijisanji doesnt call them "nijisanji en male branch" just "nijisanji en" and through that it makes them feel more accessible and more cohesive as a language branch instead of a gender branch which in turn helps in making collabs easier to understand and thus made their growth faster than it wouldve been if branded like holostars is to hololive

I'll say this, its not really related to luxiem's success but I have noticed viewers interaction with other viewers in niji en feels like warming too and also very friendly, like it does not feel like your a stranger or foreign. I don't really know how to articulate that sentence or experience well but right before anybody was starting to stream even if you are not commenting, it was kind of fun to read what everybody is trying to say because it is like group chat with everybody interacting with one another. Like for example, Vox's or Mysta's pre-chat *COUGHCough* even the clippers are adding to the chaos, they are very passionate indeed. I had a wonderful experience of witnessing the amount of chaos and the amount of wtf moments in pre-chat that even if it took hours and hours of waiting for the v-tubers to start their stream. There's content already if your checking the those interaction with the moderators as well lmaooo which is a plus. Because if I am going to stay around here I don't want to experience the bad part of all of it, of course there's going to be anyways but seems kinda fun so far as a new viewer, I am on the look out tho. I am even considering to get a Twitter account for the first time just to see the interaction behind the scene as well, the fanarts tooooooo. I heard Twitter was wild but I saw that Mika and Mysta had gone trending because of a debate. My whole feelings at that point felt like I am missing out. But because its 12 pm rn and I have been awake for like 3 days now just to finish my project and watch streams, I feel like I should sleep rn to make that decision. Really sorry for the long unnecessary comment with bad grammars.

Great video! Lots of details explaining different things in the industry. I really liked how you mentioned at the beginning of the video that most fans probably have never watched any male vtubers before because that is exactly the case for me. I am a kpop fan and have been since 2014. Was never really an anime fan therefore I have never really seen a group like Luxiem before. A few months ago, I was going onto Chinese social media apps and I encountered clips of Vox. Shortly after I began watching tons of Luxiem clips/streams and now here I am as a niji EN stan lol. I think for me the main reason why I love niji EN all so much is not only the free interactions between all of them but also that relatable and down-to-earth vibe that I'm sure most people get from them. For example, in the kpop industry, when male idols interact with other female idols, some fans would go crazy. And that is also why we cannot see any sort of music collab between talented kpop groups. For Luxiem, yes there are still certain gatekeeping fans yet I would say it is a very small portion of the fans. Seeing nijisanji EN all interacting with each other is like having a big family and watching the siblings fight with each other yet all rooting/supporting each other. btw if anyone doesn't know, Shu Yamino from Luxiem does NOT cuss at all in any of his streams so I guess it is humanly possible to not cuss while streaming :) anyways stan talent, stan Luxiem, and stan all the nijisanji EN vtubers!! again thank you for this video!!

I agree with what's said in the video, in general i think Luxiem's dynamic is crazy good, similar to how say an idol group like BTS got so popular and different, its always the chemistry between the artists themselves and the relationship they have with fans, so it seems having close relationship with fans as well as having a great team dynamic is key, from my perspective at least(ofc the many other points noted in the video) and i think that's something you just have to get lucky with or you need a really good talent scout to get together a group of artists that are incredibly compatible with each other

I like how you don't limit the discussion only to the main point, but also include the other sides of the other spectrums. As well as that you just simply put your opinions on the table but stay unbiased which gives the audience the freedom to think what they want to think and let them have their own personal opinions about the topic. Great work man!

1) Hot character designs 2) British accents (Asia has a bigtime Anglophilia thing) 3) Allowed to have actual personalities that contrast with each other instead of being flattened into "idol" categories 4) Nijisanji Magic(tm) happens when Large Roster + Unfettered Ability to Collab = the hook being more around the chemistry between groups of livers vs. simping for one particular liver -- though that happens with Luxiem too (MYSTA)

I think Luxiem definately came out at a good time. Right now, other than nijisanjiEN, there isn't really any big corporate male Vtubers. There are the guys at Tsunderia and probably other companies I don't know about, but I'm not sure if they're getting big numbers (Please do correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not too up to date with them) Since Luxiem, and now Noctyx got introduced, I think there's gonna be a bigger flow of new vtuber fans, especially women, since unless you watch Indies, there isn't really anything that caters to someone who prefers to watch a male-presenting vtuber. Something I also think will happen is the increase of male Vtubers bc with NijiEN, there's kinda someone to look up to. All in all, I'm really glad the nijiboys came to be because it's brought a lot more attention to Nijisanji. Sorry for the ramble!

For me, vtubers like Hololive (I still like them) no matter how down to earth they can't be, I can't help but still feel like their professional (which they are since they are idols not streamers), but when I found a video (the one where Vox is jumping up and down luca which is an amazing introduction, also when Uncle roger asking who is this Mysta Rias guy that's practically torturing him) they're very lax for me and I enjoy their streams, they never failed to make me laugh multiple times to the point my stomach and sides hurts. Basically Nijisanji is equal to both genders, the targeted audience, and also the support from the Nijisanji family who promoted their debut.

I can totally understand why you'd feel intimidated by Niji's number of streamers, but a way to go in that I've seen recommended a lot is to pick one or two that you like, then slowly start spreading out to either their group's members (as in the SKB sorta group, not waves), or their collab partners! Would definitely love to see more Nijisanji videos, as well as possibly past events, such as Eilene being the early backbone of the JP Vtuber community, or the controversy of Brave Group replacing all of Game Club Project's voice actors.

What is also interesting is how NijiEN also doesn't have a restrictive criteria for hiring male talents, especially considering how more than half of the Noctyx's talents are not your usual "cis-straight" guys yet they still attract a lot of female viewers. I'm late but I wanna gimme my extra bit to this. You mentioned the importance of the design but for them in specific I feel it was REALLY important. Not only the designs are eye catching but also they got really well known artists for them. I didn't know about Luxiem until like 2 days before their debuts and the first thing that catched my eye was Mysta's design and the fact that I knew whose mamas were before hand for every member, AND LAM making his first male VTuber. Along with this, while I know the rest of the waves also had a theme for their designs, with Luxiem (and Noctix) is WAY more apparent which helps a lot in promoting, 5 lads dressing like they are form the past?? white suits?? Elegant vibes?? but then it's a set of monkes and memers??? Yes thank you (Shu sorry you have no coat still love you) I do agree there was people expecting to see male EN members in Niji but gotta give credit, I would probably haven't cared this much if it wasn't because of the models designs, chef kiss

I also have some thoughts on why Luxiem did so well. I think the blowup of hololive myth softened up the western audience to vtubers- so regular anime fans who didn't know a thing about jp vtubers fell into the rabbit hole (including me). And I agree about the whole cover corp not knowing what to do with their male talents and their talents being jp and lack of fame made them much less accessible. Additionally there's the whole female idol branding and the fact that holostars were heavily hated on in the beginning. I would also say another key factor played on their fame. BL and shippability. Female BL fans are known for starting and ending fandoms-contributing a lot of fanmade media (art, fanfic, etc) especially in the Asian side of fans (look at pixiv). I don't think I've ever seen another male vtuber tap into that market quite like them. And GL isn't a novelty in the vtuber world anymore (pretty sure lesbian couples are fetishized in some circles of anime)-but BL outside of niche BL fan groups haven't been quite popularized as this. I would bet if Luxiem were as seiso as holostars they wouldn't have blown up as much. Luxiem get best of both worlds- female and male support. Mysta and Vox are the most famous and the are also the two who say the most interesting things.
