The real reason that Hydrogen is being pushed is because its supply chain can be controlled by big players (Adani?) and its sale can be taxed by the government. With BEV cars, you can put solar on your rooftop, generate your own electricity and use it to charge your car, but the Government loses out on the huge taxes they enjoy on petrol (and hydrogen in the future). Hydrogen cars are mechanically more complex but in terms of environmental concerns it's the only alternative to IC engines. People who think electric cars are eco-friendly don't know anything about how the batteries are made and how much power is needed to charge EVs. They literally mine rocks (lithium and cobalt) that is used in those batteries. It's costly and recycling these batteries is still a big issue. Also, they are prone to fire upon even the slightest bit of physical impact or shock which is why extra care should be taken for their protection. . Hydrogen cars are more eco-friendly because we have H2 in abundance. Also, it can be made artificially (through chemistry). Technically recyclable 99% is far different then actual effort. Technically everything is recyclable given enough complexity in the process of recycling. Feasibility is the key. Have you seen current recycling system being any successful? There are only few sectors where recycling has been good like plastic water bottles but that's it what about other type of plastics? Nothing landfills. What about electronics? Nothing landfills which also contaminates the groundwater enough to cause fucking cancer in nearby drinkers. It's a slippery slope at best I don't trust developing country regulation enough to trust in their recycling regulation and enforcement. They couldn't do it for e-waste which is much more due to numerous other things than lithium battery ever will be, despite that it's progress has been pathetic. Private companies will do everything to not do recycling batteries to maintain their profits. It's often passed on some unknown recycling factory that does less than half the work and rest is sent to landfills.

Any common sense person knows hydrogen is more sustainable eventually once lithium is over. But hydrogen fuel cell cars also needs some lithium batteries. Better to make all Cargo trucks and vans powered by hydrogen fuel cell is common sense.

Main reason for failure of FCEV is lack of charging infrastructure and tough competition from EVs like Tesla model 3. A hydrogen refuelling station cost some around $ 3 million to set up compared to $ 50k for a fossil fuel station and $ 200k for EV station. That's a high investment with no guaranted return. Govt sops plus companies incentives themselves proved futile for Toyota. Finally, in India cost would be the real deal breaker. There have to be massive govt subsidies to compensate for the lack of refuelling stations ( can't build a country wide network of H stations even in a decade). It would centered around in cities and hence people that likes take their vehicles around may find FCEV not appealing. How much is Gadkari planning to subsidize ?

Toyota raced with that engine a few months back. It sounded great but very expensive and complex.

Hydrogen is not the answer to remove petrol cars. Hydrogen needs to be extracted and compressed at very high pressure to make use of it in a vehicle. This step itself is going to use a lot of energy (electricity) which can be directly used to drive cars. Also, the hydrogen tank needs to be cylindrical (similar to CNG) to have required strength to store high pressure hydrogen, any other shape is not going to work. This will greatly reduce the space in car. Battery can be made in modules to fit any remaining space inside car, example Tiago EV where TATA added battery to existing Tiago car body. Hydrogen cars also lack the range. This is why no other country is trying to push hydrogen. There is a really detailed analysis of hydrogen cars in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHvNfKqJe56aipo

Mostly all vehicles should be made on solar cell and electric vehicles powered by sodium Iron life long battery or any battery having more than 20 years life. Hydrogen fuel can be used only for electric power generation because it is risky to store in public vehicles and cost will keep on increasing because it is manufactured as well as due to high pressured storage cylinders.

Gadkari wants to keep the major oil companies relevant, that's is the major motivation to go for hydrogen . For trucks, ships and planes, HYDROGEN MAY CLICK but for cars, I don't think so.

Future of hydrogen is in big vehicles indeed. It simply cannot be cheap enough for private car owners as the whole production and consumption process of hydrogen involves multiple processes with their inefficiencies

Problems to be tackled..... 1. Price of the cars. 2. Extraction of Hydrogen. 3. How to make cars extremely safe with hydrogen tank fitted .... it like a bomb attached to a car .... any nishab can be catastrophic 4. making hydrogen available everywhere ..... reach of CNG is still a question for many places in India... .... but we should be hopeful and be positive as Manufacturer must already have known these facts and surely working on it ....

I saw video from the US where the reviewer was driving the Toyota Mirai. The car costs 70000USD which is much more than the base Tesla models and other EVs. Also used Mirai models which are barely a year old are selling for half the price in the US. All the hydrogen at the time of the video was in California only. The catch is that the hydrogen pump should have Hydrogen in them. The range is 240 miles(386kms). It takes 5 mins to refill but the cost for full tank is 80USD(6k INR). This makes it more expensive than Petrol cars as well. Hence Unless these cars and fueling costs are dirt cheap, hydrogen will never pick up.
