In my opinion Gagan I dont think Hydrogen can be a mass market alternative atleast for a decade....Take the eg of EV, TATA NEXON EV came during the 2019's and it's been 5 yrs from than, still the newly made expressways lacks ev infra, almost the whole central India lacks EV infra and places like JnK only have 3-4 chargers and Ladakh Ig 0....We have came a long way but still there places to improve. Anyone who understands physics will never bet on green Hydrogen as an energy carrier for transportation. It's simply too wasteful (energy inefficient) hence can NEVER be cheaper than charging BEVs. The electrolysers, fuel cells and reinforced high pressure tanks are also expensive af. Funnily, FCEVs still need a battery for running the motor.

all this drama and still pay ₹30/km for driving it, no thanks h2 stations cost 1-2million dollars and have n number of restrictions and permits you need, EV chargers $1K-10K (slow and fast) you can build for same money will serve 100x more EVs per day than one h2 station

Hello Gagan Bhai, Very nice review, and the questions you raised regarding refueling and production are justified. Let me clarify as much as I can without revealing too much about the industry and myself. I work as an R&D Engineer at a USA based startup company that is currently focused on producing Green Hydrogen in an economical way. We use 100% green and renewable energy from start to finish, with zero plastic use (we use biodegradable plastic for the hydrogen extractor plate) and no burning throughout the process. After years of research, we have already managed to make hydrogen fuel 25%-35% less costly than what you mentioned (I can't disclose the exact percentage and price for obvious reasons). Due to my profession, I had the chance to drive the Mirai in Germany at a special event. Toyota is one of our clients and has invested significantly in this technology. Honestly speaking, hydrogen may not be very suitable for passenger cars, but it will likely be very successful for commercial use in the future, such as in heavy trucks and trains. As we all know, the main drawback for EVs is the battery pack the more range and load capacity you want, the heavier the battery pack will be. Whereas, with hydrogen, you just need to refuel like an ICE car. What Nithin Ji mentioned about making one kilogram of hydrogen for around one dollar is visionary, but practically, I don't think that's possible. However, hydrogen will certainly become more economical than fossil fuels in the future. One kilogram of hydrogen provides much more range than a liter of petrol or diesel. Without being overly visionary, I would say that in the coming 5 years, you may not see much change in the infrastructure, but in the long run or i would say within 10 years you will definitely see a significant jump. Again, when something new is introduced, people take time to adjust. It’s really unfortunate that, despite everything Toyota has done for its customers, they are facing legal issues. But as we say, the customer is always right, and we shouldn't blame them. I'm sure Toyota will find a way to tackle this. Thank you again for this engineering beauty. ❤❤❤
@aditsapkota78623 ай бұрын
Thanks for the info Mate! Having had experience and knowledge on these matters, do you think Electric is the solution? I've read reports that batteries aren't exactly sustainable and we'll be repeating the same process as we've done with fossil fuels. Could you please shade some light on this. Thanks
@annoynommus3 ай бұрын
@@aditsapkota7862 see if we talk about it in a very technical way (might be boring to you) then I would say EVs are the most efficient compared to ICE or Hydrogen Fule cells. Let me break this for you.. 1. ICE Crude Oil Extraction and Refining: Efficiency: Crude oil is extracted and refined with an efficiency of about 85%. Transportation and Storage: Efficiency: The transportation and storage of refined fuels are quite efficient, but still incur some energy losses. Combustion Efficiency: Efficiency: The internal combustion engine itself is only about 20-30% efficient, with most energy lost as heat. Overall Efficiency: Typically around 17-25%, because of the significant losses in the combustion process. 2. EVs Electricity Production (Let's assume we are using fossil fuel for electricity production and not renewal energy): Coal/Natural Gas Extraction and Processing: Similar processes to crude oil, with comparable efficiency. Electricity Generation: Efficiency: Power plants using fossil fuels convert energy at around 30-55% efficiency. Transmission and Storage: Efficiency: The electricity transmission grid is about 90% efficient. Battery Charging and Discharging: Efficiency: Modern lithium-ion batteries are 85-90% efficient in charging and discharging. Electric Motor Efficiency: Efficiency: Electric motors are highly efficient, around 85-90%. Overall Efficiency: Despite the additional steps, the overall efficiency of EVs is still higher, around 60-70%, due to the high efficiency of electric motors and the energy storage process. 3. Hydrogen Fuel Cells Hydrogen Production Efficiency: 60-70% (via electrolysis or steam reforming). Transportation and Storage Efficiency: Around 70%. Fuel Cell Efficiency: Approximately 40-60%. Overall Efficiency: Around 20-35%. So we can state that ICE Vehicles: 17-25%. EVs: 60-70%. Hydrogen Fuel Cells: 20-35%. But the only drawback is the battery pack and lithium mining process and the reuse of the battery pack. If we take those also in count then the Efficiency of the EVs comes to as low as 50% - 60% which is still higher than the other two.

@@annoynommus> But the only drawback is the battery pack and lithium mining process and the reuse of the battery pack. h2 fuel cell also uses platinum palladium catalyst so it is not like h2 solves that issue ICE requires constant drilling of fuel over entire lifetime of car ass opposed to battery production which is one time mining and can keep reusing it in other applications like grid storage or for EV conversion of old cars (#1 use case for old tesla batteries)
@7567_Rex3 ай бұрын
> such as in heavy trucks and trains we already have 95% electrified railways, there is no need to switch to h2 after investing crores in electrification, trains don't use batteries so it is no brainer to go OHE cable with electric loco trucks is debatable. Light trucks upto tata 407 types can easily use batteries as they primarily do intracity usage -- where range is not that important. Mostly moving between godowns and market Last mile delivery and garbage collection is already using tata ace EV in my city what we need to focus on is long haul trucks like tata 1613 or 2518. for that the solution is using RORO service in conjunction with railways again -- which are 95% electrified in konkan, there is roro service for trucks as the road is very bad but the rail is using tunnels and bridges and journey is shorter similarly, the DFC of railways can be used for roro service, truck goes from godown to depot and loads on train, train wagon can have slow chargers built in which can charge the truck during journey and when it reaches destination, it is fully charged by that time

Nitin Gadkari is delusional, I am an automotive engineer myself working in Germany and I know that the money that is going into hydrogen car development is nothing compared to what is going in electric car development and hydrogen cars are not practical not only they are 60% efficient compared to 95+ percent efficient electric cars, but also they are very notorious to refuel as it requires very high-pressure compression of hydrogen tanks and they are very dangerous. The infrastructure required to refill these high pressure hydrogen tanks require lot of money and electric cars can be charged at home. This is really a pathetic decision and I was not expecting from such a leader. I hope he learns this because hydrogen is not a good alternative and it is very difficult to develop hydrogen cars and India don’t have that capability. Indian companies are getting good in EVS so why do you want to disrupt their business and also the range of hydrogen car is pathetic the Toyota Mira 2 (best hydrogen car to exist) has a claimed range of 400, but it hardly goes beyond 270 km and this is tested in America and a huge public uproar is against the company and lawsuits are going on the company and and Nitin ji wants this technology, which is not completely developed as well as very inefficient to enter Indian market seriously?

true, it costs almost 1-2million dollars for one H2 station, you can build thousands of DC fast chargers for that much money even if we leave everything aside, the fact is that with just 320L boot space and pathetic rear seat space, h2 is just not useful for cars. This is 5m long sedan just imagine how much space will be left in normal sub4m like nexon which also has EV model but zero difference in interior space, in fact punch and curvv have extra space in frunk to store tools and charger.

I am planning to buy my first car and was initially considering the Skoda Slavia or VW Virtus. However, I have two concerns: 1. Interior Build Quality: When I checked the interiors of both cars, I noticed a crackling noise from the dashboard when I pressed it. Some friends with the Taigun and Slavia have also mentioned experiencing the same issue. 2. AC Performance: I've heard that the AC doesn't perform well, especially in bumper-to-bumper traffic within the city. Since I plan to keep the car for over 10 years, I'm worried that these issues might affect the car's durability in the long run. Would these cars hold up well for that duration, despite these concerns?
