I have just watched Mr. Andrews lecture about the situation in Syria and I just want to say thank you Barry for this great session, it was very short but great and I hope you will continue to raise awareness about the reality of the Syrian massacre and that it is not a civil war like what most of media outlets are trying to proclaim to relieve the listener from the moral responsibility if it would be called by its real name a massacre of an entire population, because then the people will question their leaders about their complicity in this crime by doing nothing in the best case and supplying weapons to the criminal for others, Obama was successful in convincing the US population that getting rid of Assad chemical weapons is a victory, and that they do not have to be worried about hundreds of dead children that are being gassed because he siezed the criminal weapon, when in fact it was a license to kill as much as the criminal Assad wants as long it does not involve chemical weapons, and the Assad crminal regime understood the message very well and now we no longer here about the daily atrocities commited by Assad thugs, apparntly Obama words and red lines are more important to him than the lives of hunderds of thousand of innocent Syrians, this world is disgusting

But they didn't get rid of the al Nusra chemical weapons. Oh , sorry, I mean "rebel" chemical weapons.

We cared about Syria. And we cared about Syrians. For Syria we couldn't do much good from our powerless position, but for the Syrian refugees we could. So we did. We do care. Leaders, democraticaly chosen or not, did not care, except those of Russia and Iran.

two people die in a terrorist attack in France and the UK govt, media and people go on and on about it for weeks. over 200,000 dead in Syria and you are right, there is widespread apathy and indifference. As a poet once said, "Let everyone's house burn, so long as my house doesnt burn." That is the attitude of the Western masses, because Syrians are Muslims so they are fair game, they are expendable. The truth is this: there are too many political players in Syria, and too many govts and groups with vested interests. All these players are operating on a policy of greed. Not one of them gives a damn about the people. Regardless of your political affiliation, regardless of who you think is to blame, just put aside the politics and focus on the fact that innocent people are dying and they dont even know why. They havent taken part in the politics, they havent sided with anyone. They are just regular people who go to work, send their kids to school, go for a picnic on the weekends, look after their elderly relatives, give charity to the poor, and live regular lives, like any one of us. One day they wake up and find themselves in the middle of hell. It can really happen to any one of us. Instead of wading into the filthy mess of politics and blaming this country or that government or this terrorist group, just put that aside and if you can do NOTHING ELSE, at least pray for the people. Please, just pray for them.

In the beginning when refugees from Syria were setting foot on European soil, the debate rose if the EU should develop a policy, and if so, what should look like. The debate within the Netherlands was executed in a hard and mean way. People from the anti-refugee-kamp used profane language on the advers as well as on the refugees. The politicians representing that group, went even further by spreading fear assuming terrorism will be imported with the refugees into their nation. The leftside of the political spectrum did not attack the refugees, and neither did it argue for their arrival much. They sensed that people weren't interested much to take responsibility in this matter for economical reasons, so short after the start of the financial crisis. And here it comes: PRIME MINISTER MARK RUTTE, FROM DUTCH LIBERALS, OFFERED THAT THE NETHERLANDS WAS WILLING TO TAKE ON 19 REFUGEES! Hoping that if h named a number, that it would help to keep'm out and keep him in the 'power tower'. And then the images of a little boy would layed on his face on a beach , dead, with his little sandals facing the camera..

This is a cumulative problem with lots of issues. Syria is strategically placed, there are energy and commercial interests, political, ethnic and idealistic issues. But ultimately Assad and his backers refused to sit down around a table and find a solution resulting in 3 Million Syrians fleeing their own country to save their own lives. Is this the sign of a great President acting in the interests of his people. No, he bowed down to the will of other third parties influences, now he Is the leader of a country with 3 million less of his people / citizens than when this started. What has happened here is pure murder. They hung Saddam Hussain on the basis they proved he did not have chemical weapons or as they phrased it for greater fear effect "Weapons of Mass destruction" (after all rocket launchers, tanks, missiles , land mines, non of these cause mass destruction do they ?!?!?) used to create greater fear. Yet Assad admitted he used them and the UN and allied countries give him a 'naughty boy give them to us and carry on with your attacks' speech, now carry on murdering without discrimination with no being held to account for using chemical weapons outlawed by all if the international community. The reality is the power blockers and politicisations have used it as a place to fight out their differences and don't care in the slightest for people who live their, and the same in Iraq, Afghanistan, numerous African nations, and countless other locations around the world. Morality !!!! None of those in power in any of these places know the meaning of the word unless used for a some personal gain. The United Nations this once great organisation has and continues to lose the purpose it was created for.

Perhaps identity too play a role? I have a hard time identifying myself with the good people of Syria. The things happening down there are terrible, yet I care slightly less than what I do about other disasters elsewhere. Also, unfortunate for everyone, when Denmarks and Norways embassies where attacked and set ablaze in 2006 I, for one, felt more distanced towards Syria.

this would rather be called ‘why no one cares about Rojava’ since the Kurdish people were the only ones who stood their ground and defeated ISIS while the syrians fled to the neighbouring countries. if you open any history book you’ll come to realise this land does indeed belong to the Kurdish people, who were betrayed. Rojava is part of a much greater Kurdistan and the land belongs to the brave Kurdish nation who want equality and rights for all the other ethnic minorities which also live there.

The reason that people care when people suffer from earth quakes, hurricanes, volcanos is that these were peaceful civilized people and then nature a universal giver and taker away of life attacked them. In the case of war the feeling is more like you wanted honey so you decided to wage war on bees and this human, bee war started and why should I care, they knew what they were getting into. Also with war it is not an outside group helping the injured. As in the World Wars and every war since, half of the people don't want help they just want to fight. So F Syria.

I appreciate his efforts, but I must say that it is not as simple as he claims. For example: He says, "when mass murder is occurring by a government against its people" as though it is a statement of undeniable fact. Many of these cited "atrocities", however, are not only very difficult to verify, but often used as a pretext for military intervention, and quite likely fabrications. Having access to information that many do not, I am convinced things are not so clear cut. Could it have been propaganda by US supported insurgents to bolster support for the toppling of the Assad government?

Dear Alan Blanes , just read the reply that a guy an ISIS/ Al Nusra sympathetic has written to me that's a specimen of the sectarians and ignorants you are expecting us to deal with , please bring me an example when negotiations with radicals terrorists have achieved anything , history left no shadow of doubt that the only way to deal with these thugs is how the Syrian army and recently the western coalition is dealing with them , it's not about the business community and minorities , it's about the intellectual elite , the Sunni liberals , and many other sectors of the Syrian society the western governments chose to ignore , because the government in Syria was left with no other choice but to take allies of Iran , a regime that is in fundamental discrepancy with the believed and values of Al Basth party , The Syrian crisis and human tragedy will never be solved unless the West will seat on the table with the legitimate Syrian government for two reasons ; one is hat they are well educated liberals that one can at least negotiate with , second because they are the only capable party of confronting the hundred different radical militias spreading terrorism in the region and all over the world on the ground , let's first clean up terrorism then the international community will gain the credibility to be considered a negotiating party , and will be given a serious chance to separate the Syrians from their forced coalition with Iran so a win/win situation that will tackle all the political, security and humanitarian problems at once .
