For other Pokémon for this series: - hitmonchan (stats too low, good movepool diversity) - hariyama (stats too weak, has decent movepool to and good ability to cheese things out) - rampardos (speed issues) There are so many non legendary or non mythic Pokémon that get bumped out of vgc, because of not having enough stats to hang with legendary and mythic Pokémon.

I don’t think it’s much to do with Hariyamas stats being too weak (though this game is powercrept to hell who knows), it has massive HP and attack, getting even more massive with stuff like Guts. It’s more to do with it trying to be both defensive and offensive without really excelling at either, especially since pure fighting doesn’t have many valuable resistances, and thick fat is better applied to others. The Pokemon is also just too easily countered, any good psychic or flying move 2-hitKOs it.

I think just a couple changes can make Blastoise much more viable. 1. Give him Follow Me again. Let him lean into the utility mon. Fake Out/Follow Me is a great combo. 2. Rework Rain Dish. Instead of gaining such a small amount of Hp, make it increase his Bulk when in the rain. Charizard gets stronger in Sun. Venusaur gets faster in Sun. So make Blastoise Tanky in the Rain. That would follow the trio Hidden Abilities while also focusing on the thing water types were meant to do: tank

I think the main issue with blastoise is really that it gets outclassed by the many other waters and that it just matches up really poorly into the grasses and electrics. However, I disagree with the point that blastoise wouldn't be good with mega evolution. Currently in natdex doubles its one of the premier megas because it can shell smash and do massive damage. With follow me support, and potentially farigiraf to block annoying priority it could be a massive threat especially since if at full hp it gets water spout. Overall, I think the main underlying issue is that why run blastoise when you could easily run pelipper, urshifu, and other waters that just do more things than it and match up better into the current overall metagame.

Why no one plays is one of my favorite series but for Pokemon you gotta put up official useage stats and top cut placements instead of just theoretical reasons. Like there was a blastoise shadow rider team going around in Series 12 in Gen 8 as well as some wonky mega blastoise teams back in Gen 6 that top cut US Nationals

I think blastoise could have some play with swift swim, torkoal only has base 85 special attack and it is still extremely threatening with sun boosted eruption. Blastoise could output that level of damage without needing to set up trick room as long as it has rain support. For example: 252+ SpA Mystic Water Blastoise Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 252 HP / 60 SpD Calyrex-Ice in Rain: 109-130 (52.6 - 62.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO 252+ SpA Mystic Water Blastoise Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 220 HP / 84 SpD Zamazenta-Crowned in Rain: 100-118 (51.2 - 60.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

The difference is koal sets up its own sun to do the sweeping. You need to either have a drizzle mon or a rain dance mon to set up toise. And you could say "well you have to set up tr for koal". But koal tr teams have mons that all take advantage of the situation. Either other tr sweepers like ursaluna, or chlorophyll mons like lilligant to spread sleep powder or use after you. Plus koal in tr is always the fastest thing on the field (short of priority) while balstioise even after swift swim can easily be outsped if the opponent has tailwind and a booster mon. TR also just does more to mess up your opponents game plan then rain swift swim. And is hard to shut down or reverse. Finally toise on a rain team is going to be doubling up on weaknesses (either electric with torn and pelly or both grass and electric with ogre). It makes the team defensively weak.

In general, defensive mons in VGC need to do something to force you to attack them. The two most iconic defensive Pokemon in OU (Skarmory and Blissey) struggle to translate to VGC because they so easily suffer from what Wolfe Glick calls AMFAD syndrome. Meanwhile Amoonguss, an otherwise mediocre defensive mon in singles, is one of the most iconic VGC Pokemon due to its use of Rage Powder, a move that forces you to hit it, and Spore, a move that destroys your opponents momentum. Even Ting-Lu found use from a combination of Ruination (does reliable fixed damage under all circumstances) and cheese like Fissure (insta-KO luckshot). Defensive Pokemon need to give the opponent a reason to hit them or they're just gonna sit there while the other teammates die.

I just want to lament Blastoise losing Follow Me on his kit. It was a gen 5 event move and when it was part of Blastoise's kit it was a viable bulky water in Smogon Doubles. Then they snapped it away from Blastoise instead of letting Blastoise have it in later games meaning that VGC players don't know the wonder of having a big Blastoise sitting there and forcing the opponent to attack it instead.

This video reminded me that Aqua Ring exists and I had to look it up, I figured it had to be about on par with Leech Seed - since leech seed can miss and does damage. That seems like a reasonable balance...unforutnately I'm completely wrong. Aqua Ring is 1/16th healing meanwhile Leech Seed is a 1/8th drain. So Leech Seed is kinda like a 2/8ths swing. Feels like Aqua Ring could be 1/8th healing and it might actually get used.
