In war, the 'high ground' refers to the most strategic position available on a battlefield, and its occupation and exploitation gives the force occupying it major military advantages. With the dawn of the space age, it quickly became clear that the space around earth was the ultimate high ground, and whoever conquered it first would put all other militaries at a severe disadvantage. So why hasn't it happened yet? That’s what we’ll find out today, in this episode of The Infographics Show- why we can't put weapons on space stations.

Ok, I just want to point out that gravity wont simply pull an object down that's traveling at orbital speeds, you still need to slow the object down with things like rocket motors or tremendously strong monopropelant engines like the oms on the shuttle... as yes, gravity pulls you down but in orbit you are moving laterally at the same speed as gravity is pulling you down, you need to counteract that force before you can return to earth meaning thermal detection systems would be viable

Short Answer: Because international treaties ban the use and launch of orbital weapons. (Though... it may be a good idea to put lasers on expensive satellites to shoot down debris that may otherwise collide with them. But you need to make sure it's not abused.)

Unlike low Earth orbit satellites, when geosynchronous satellites run out of thruster fuel, they do not deorbit, they drift into several stable orbital points and stay in those satellite graveyards forever. I wonder how many of these have a tungsten projectile and a solid fuel thruster in them as a covert orbital kinetic weapon...

You know, or you could just significantly lower the mass of the projectile being shot. (Hence why blasters shoot plasma/light beams ect) little to no weight, but lots of energy.

i remember that scene in that one movie i forgotten the name of where the many countries are like "how do we shoot down this thing, well need some sort of space laser... does anyone have one?" and everyone but canada raises their hand. i forgot how exactly it went but i remember a scene like that. i think it was dr strangelove.

You forgot plain old kinetic weapons. Dropping a mass from orbit that's capable of getting through without burning up would have a LOT of kinetic energy. Some calculations rate them on the scale of a megaton nuke, just from sheer momentum. I've even heard them described of "The Hammer of God" edit: Never mind, you got there towards the end

Technically there have been acknowledged weapons in space in the cold war era one of the space stations the soviets put up had a mini-gun installed to repel potential boarders. i cant remember the exact gun they used.

At 3:35 it says you could just release the missile orient it and have it pulled down to earth by gravity, but it would still have all the velocity of the space station; therefore needing a rocket engine.

What about a laser or energy based weapon? it would not produce the counter forces and can have very great range in a vacuum

I think the emphasis of F = ma is a little misguided. You guys correctly listed that the kinetic weapon relies on mass, speed, and kinetic energy of the projectile. Force does not have to do with how devastating these weapons are. The more correct (in my opinion) explanation would be they're able to reach incredible velocities due to acceleration and distance, and thus has immense kinetic energy due to the square nature of the equation K = mv^2. The power of such weapon comes from all those kinetic energy abruptly turning into something else when it hits the ground.

Kinetic weapons would work lovely, built from Tungston they wouldn't melt and the speed would create a explosion equlivant to that of a sub orbital nuke.

We can’t put radar absorbent material on vehicles, weapons, that are coming towards earth, the said material would burn off, the f-22’s radar absorbing material has a temperature limit of around Mach 3, the faster it goes the more air it hits, which means friction, and if they go past a certain speed Mach 3-4(estimates). So if someone where to put radar absorbing materials on a weapon going from space to earth, the heat signature would point it out, also the radar material would burn up upon re-entry. As re-entry speeds are around Mach 25

There was a gun on most USSR missions to protect the crew once they landed, and one time they did bring a machine gun up. This could be wrong but I’m pretty sure it is true, this is just from memory

3:34 no, that's not how orbits work. You need thrust to reduce orbital speeds for re-entry, and the faster you want to de-orbit, the stronger the thrust has to be.

1:19. You could ignore the Newton’s 3rd law if you have ICBM type weapons with their own propulsion. Because they would propel themselves, they would only need a small push to clear the mothership.

This one was prepared BADLY. 1) Wepons on orbit. a) automatic canon was actually used on one soviet station. When not too big, not to heavy ammunition and when made as recoilless as possible (say centrifugal force powered gun), you can freely use it as point defence of sorts, with mitigated cons you mentioned. b) not only nukes, but also kinetic rods and lasers can be used quite easily. Not to mention unmanned space vehicles, like the boeing X-37, wich can be used for attacks on enemy space structures (like satelites, sensors, etc). 2) correction engines. There are such types of engines, wich does require either small(er) amount of fuel, or energy only to work. One of such devices are the movement correcting gyroscopes on spacestation Alpha on our orbit right now.

The problem with the spaceship firing rockets can easily be counteracted, all you have to do is simply release the rocket from the space craft with minor force like air jets and when the missile is clear of the space craft it will propel itself to its target.
