AI is supposed to help militaries make precise strikes. Is that the case in Gaza?

Israel's war with Hamas, in response to the attacks of October 7, 2023, has led to more fatalities than in any previous Israeli war, with at least 34,000 Palestinians killed as of May 7, 2024. In Israel’s 2014 war in Gaza, just over 1,400 were killed. One factor in that difference is the use of artificial intelligence.
Israel’s incorporation of AI in warfare has been public for years through both defensive and offensive weapons. But in this war, AI is being deployed differently: It’s generating bombing targets. The promise of AI in a military context is to enhance strike precision and accuracy, but over the past few months Israeli outlets +972 magazine and Local Call have revealed that the multiple AI systems that help the IDF select targets in Gaza have contributed to the highest number of Palestinian civilian deaths and injuries ever.
In our video, we interview multiple experts to understand how two specific systems, Gospel and Lavender, operate, and we explore the broader implications of current and future AI use in warfare.

This story is about the war in Gaza, but it's also a preview of the future of warfare. Over on our website, the reporter Sigal Samuel did an interview that delves into the ethical questions around that future even further. It's fascinating, complicated, and really, truly scary: www.vox.com/future-perfect/24151437/ai-israel-gaza-war-hamas-artificial-intelligence

Amazing work! What we want to watch out for when it comes to coverage of the war on Gaza is information fatigue, i.e. when people just stop listening to the news or clicking on KZbin videos because it's just another depressing video on the same topic. By finding stories like this, you not only alert on a greater issue than this war that's looming over our futures, but you also find a very interesting angle that helps people stay informed while avoiding this information fatigue. Please keep on the good work!

How did Israel intelligence agency fail to stop the attack? How did they fail to stop even after being tipped long before it actually happened? call me conspiracy theorist but this feels more like they knew and they allowed this to happen in order to further their agenda and ambition to encompass entirety of Palestine and also use it as excuse to invade and destroy most of Gaza which they succeeded (70% of Gaza is in waste and ruins)

The antisemitism and rampant anti-Israeli sentiment forced Israel to develop these systems to defend itself. That’s why shield has now turned to sword in 2024. I would no doubt believe that the us is incredibly interested in the results of Israel’s ai tests in Gaza. Many people who are anti-Israel cite that Israel provides nothing to the United States for us to dump 3 billion a year into it. I’d argue that Israel is capable of doing the kinds of live wartime tests that the us is unable to do openly without tarnishing its image.

@@PotatoCruncher12in the Pre World-War 1 Era, Wars that were fought were often categorized as "Gentlemans Wars" by Historians, due to the strict rules of War European Nations would abide by (this only counts for direct wars between European Powers). For example, Generals and Officers that were captured would be treated with high respect. This is because every kind of breachment of these unspoken rules would reflect badly on the nations ruling classes. For Context, an overwhelming majority of European Powers were Monarchies (most of which also closely or distantly related), and Barbaric Practices of Warfare would reflect badly on the Monarchs reputation. This would make forging new Alliances with that nation less favourable for other nations. An example for such a war would be the Austro-Prussian War. Only a few years after the war, the newly founded German Empire and Austrian Empire would become inseperable allies. The turning point for brutality in Warfare came during WW1, because it was all-or-nothing for everyone involved. Combined with the new technological advancements, war would be focused on the most destruction possible. And nowadays, we have the technologies available to completely wipe us off this planet 3 times.

Biggest issue with this video is that it does not implicate any fault or intent to harm civilians, which makes it miss the biggest cause of this AI use: it absolves blame. If you can blame civilian casualties on a software instead of a specific person, it’s harder to try anyone for war crimes. The only reason this would be used en masse is either knowledgeable disregard for human life, or specific intent to increase human casualties (i.e. genocidal intent). showing only one side of the war isn't "journalism". There are still hostages in Gaza so the IDF is doing what it can. Hamas didn't agree to a fair agreement on the return of the hostages, so Israel is entering Rafah now to try and return the hostages.

Irresponsible reporting. There's way too much weight being put on one random testimonial from a magazine that has been known to publish falsehoods in the past. The human manual review is the most important aspect of these systems and they are absolutely not just being checked off at a glance. You need far more to substantiate that than a single unsourced quote when the validity of that claim is the largest determiner of whether or not this is blatant disregard for life.
