Watch the full Real Talk with Zuby podcast ft. Adam Carolla here:
• Adam Carolla - Comedic...
Zuby and Adam Carolla discuss the evolution of entertainment over the years. They reflect on the shifting dynamics of platforms like MTV and Sports Illustrated, emphasizing the decline of traditional gatekeepers and the rise of individual merit. Despite the democratization of media through podcasting and social platforms, saturation poses a challenge for newcomers.
The conversation also delves into the impact of political correctness on comedy, with Carolla noting the trend of comedians toning down material to safeguard endorsements. However, this self-censorship has paved the way for emerging talents like Zuby, unafraid to challenge boundaries and capture audience attention. Overall, their dialogue highlights how attempts to control discourse often backfire, giving rise to new voices and platforms challenging the established norms.

A celebrity from 1970-2015~ was someone whose face was seen regularly on screens. Then screens and cameras both became the same ubiquitous pocket-sized device, and now to be recognized you actually have to compete with the general populace on the basis of your ideas.

He was understating, and he knew it. Nowadays, it's better if you are really great, and being just good is not good at all. More of the attention, therefore rewards, goes to the very best than in the past. The distribution is more skewed, so those with moderate talent are pushed down.

Adam is completely correct. The more open the market, the greater the level of talent, the larger the portion of the rewards. Chris Williamson, for example. However, the changes in technology don't always mean constant upward movement. The business of recorded music did get that way twenty years ago when a band could go rogue and take home more money in total off a fraction of the sales need to earn good money with a label. But then developments in the same tech world replaced the old masters with new (ticket) masters. And instead of MCA, bands now work for Apple.

I think we need to change from 'main stream media' to 'legacy media, etc'. Main stream today IS stuff like this. Rogan's podcasts, many others, receive tons more views that legacy media. So legacy media is no longer 'main stream' if that makes sense.

Definitely more democratized. A musician can build up a 40K following and make a great living. The big labels are becoming a thing of the past. Same for a streamer/podcaster. You don't have to be giant to make out OK. You can be your own studio. Low overhead.

A select few comedians never dodged the issues and confronted the PC culture that morphed into "woke". Patrice O'Neal appeared on Fox News (TWICE) around 2007 to speak out against the PC social justice warriors. Once was in support of Don Imus, and the fact Imus was "cancelled" for a joke. Yes, Imus made an insensitive comment, but a reprimand and apology should have been enough. Perhaps if more comedians had satirized the ridiculous stances of the PC culture we wouldn't be in the predicament we are now. Dave Chappelle is another comedian who hasn't shied away from the mobs. Most of the moderately to very successful comedians "protected their brand", as Carolla put it, and just let it happen.

Hollywood seems to be dying. Why? Might be new technology, making it easier for young people to make movies. Things are getting more meritocratic over time. Hollywood had too much ethnic concentration of talent in the past, that repeated in certain families. Like Goldie Hawn and her kid. Kirk Douglas and his kid. Drew Barrymore is from a long line of families. Nepo-Babies, Bill Maher called them. The best explanation I heard of this was the video Jiminy Glick (Martin Short) interviewing Mel Brooks. The old Hollywood was who you know, who you.....The Harvey Weinstein Effect... Politics has the same nepotism problem. George W. Bush only became President because of his dad. Hillary almost became President, because of her husband.

Hollywood is dying because what they create is made for a tiny percentage of the population. Even earlier actors who you can nepo had talent and made enjoyable entertainment. Sports stars often have children who have a leg up due to their parent’s celebrity. But they often get good genetics along with focused training.
@tommyfu9271
@tommyfu9271 10 күн бұрын
it's dying for a lot of reasons. in it's heyday you had to go to the movies to watch a movie. it was an event.ball you had was movies and 3 channels of network tv that wasn't even 24 hours a day. today you have millions of options to watch, and there's no mystery behind the actors as people, especially younger ones who use social media a lot.In 20 years there won't be any real movie stars anymore.
