BAKU - Most people casually dismiss the North Korean government as either crazy or insane. Even though it’s past decisions have caused widespread famine, resulted in an economic meltdown, and the personality cult surrounding Kim is nothing short of totalitarian, there is strategic thought behind the nuclear program. In fact, it may well be the most sensible thing in North Korea.

The North Korean people are in no position to have an honest/objective opinion on their government, as they have been brainwashed and brutally coerced into subservient pawns to be used by their dear leader and those within the inner circle. It is the antithesis of individual liberty and freedom that we in the West have been lucky to be born into; it is slavery to the state.

Thank you for your efforts in this series. North Korea's primary threat ( and when we speak of the DPRK we are primarily speaking of the Kims and the Military Ruling Elite that support the Kims ) is not one of invasion of the DPRK by the US, or from any other entity outside of the DPRK, but from within. The Kim government ( call the ruling aspects of the DPRK a government is a very loose use of the term ) is highly susceptible to divisions within the ruling elite, an actual severing of its artificial "secret" financial sources, shocks to food production and distribution, and a severing of its extremely dependent relationship with China, any one or two of these underpinnings collapse and the DPRK will fall apart from its own weight. Such is NOT an event either South Korea, China, Japan, or the US wish to see, in fact in policy circles within South Korea, China, Japan and even the US would prefer to maintain the status quo in the DPRK. The huge influx of refugees, distribution of weapons, and political and military instability would be significant. South Korea has moved so far away from its Northern cousins financially and culturally that a collapse of the DPRK would be costly to them in the extreme, China does not want a US alley on its borders, nor does it want millions and millions of North Koren poor, starving and under educated populations flooding into that region destabilizing their political map. Unless the DPRK feels massively threatened and actually decides to use their weapons of last resort, and that is what they will be, the KIms will remain in power. Once used they have no illusions of what the final outcome will be, and that will be the complete destruction of the DPRK by counter strike, a strike the US would not even need to be involved, as the South Korean Military alone has more than enough capacity to overcome the DPRK.

@CrimsonAlchemist
@CrimsonAlchemist 7 жыл бұрын
Nothing to be sympathetic about a dictator who let its people starve. But, imagine US made a preemptive strike to a nation with the largest Artillery units. Seoul, South Korea would be decimated within days. Look at Syria cities, it's ground zero in a few months just by fighting with rebels. That's like 5% destruction power of North Korea's soviet era weapons which can still make critical damage. US shows no regards for South Korea... because they know they're safe thousands of miles away

Shirvan, great analysis as always--however, Russia did not 'invade' Ukraine/Crimea. In point of fact, it can be argued that it was the U.S. who invaded Ukraine with their colour revolution toppling Yanukovych and installing the West-controlled Poroshenko. Let us not forget that the Crimeans themselves held a referendum with a high voter turn out, and an extremely high (90% roughly) vote to split from Ukraine.
@KitchenSinkSoup
@KitchenSinkSoup 7 жыл бұрын
subtle0savage A referendum that happened after the Russian military had secured the roads, political centres and population centres (I'm not disputing that Crimea probably voted for reunification with Russia just pointing out why people consider it to be invalid). Also Yanukovych was a Russian puppet just as much as Poroshenko is a Western one.
@subtle0savage
@subtle0savage 7 жыл бұрын
I suggest you research your facts. Although a completely accurate account is difficult to come by, it is estimated Russia flew in approximately 550 soldiers. Most of those lightly armed units were spread around the various Russian military installations already on the island. A detachment was also sent to guard the parliament building, and to secure the airport. Russia has significant military assets on Crimea. Lets not forget the island has been part of Russia since 1783. The Western press made all this look like a military take-over, which by any stretch of the imagination it was not. They've also tried to make it look like the populace only voted to secede from Ukraine under threat of arms. In order for Russia to, as you say, 'secure the roads and population centres' they would have needed 20,000 more troops there (Crimea is a huge island) at a minimum. Putin himself is on record recommending the people of Crimea *not* hold a referendum, as the situation was volatile and further fuel to the fire might have triggered more drastic action from Ukraine. The sending of 500 or so lightly armed troops was, in reality, a prudent and controlled measure.
@KitchenSinkSoup
@KitchenSinkSoup 7 жыл бұрын
subtle0savage So the fact that (as you stated) the Russian army (on Crimea) secured airports, roads and government buildings does not constitute as a military takeover why does? Crimea has been part of Ukraine since the 1950's. They're two roads into Crimea that lead to the rest Ukraine and more Russian troops have since been deployed in the peninsula. When does Putin recommend this? The referendum is considered sketchy of the Russian troops in the peninsula and the fact that one Ukraine wasn't consulted (who would have said no) and that no one was allowed to observe the election. Crimea most likely did vote for reunification but it's mostly contested for geopolitical reasons and for the lack of evidence that the vote was fair.
@subtle0savage

The Russian naval base of Sevastopol is a critical asset for the maintenance of the Black Sea Fleet. Under treatise with Ukraine after Crimea was signed over to Ukraine--largely for administration purposes--the base along with several Russian military bases on the island would remain under the complete control of Russia. The coup toppling Yanukovych was clearly orchestrated by the U.S., and an obvious step for the 'West' was to secure Sevastopol, thus crippling Russian naval movement in the Black Sea. Putin reacted with the measured step of ensuring Crimea could not be swamped with Ukrainian soldiers. I'm not sure the world knows how close we came to full out war in that moment. You, Matthew, perceive Russia as blatantly 'invading' Crimea. Many others see Putins move as a necessary and vital step to ensure the survival of Russia. Crimea was a red-line Russia cannot allow 'the West' to cross.

The nerves you must have to make such a statement in the face of all the video footage, it's absolutely amazing. You can debate the context in which it happened, you can argue that it was justified, but to suggest the invasion didn't happen at all is dishonest and ridiculous beyond belief.

The "nuclear deterrence" solution is just "kick the can down the road". Sure a dictator can secure their safety, for a time. Even if it works as dreamed by the Kim dynasty and the example spread, then rich countries are going to counter by developing a better anti-missile technology. It may not happen in the current Kim generation, but what happen to the next? Shift from conventional deterrence to strategic deterrence doesn't change the fundamental problem that DPRK's economy can't keep up with ROK.

NK is a a rouge state, it's a military conglomerate running a country. North Korea shot down a US plane in 1969 killing 31 Americans, in the 1976 they've killed two American soldiers in the NK-SK buffer zone, in the 1983 North Korean special forces killed South Korean Prime Minister and three other key officials, in 2015 they bombarded Yeoncheon with artillery. USA never attacked NK, but NK is a regional threat and this problem needs to be resolved right now.

In regard to the shootdown, the jet was flying close to the North Korean coast, the US has shoot down jets in international waters including a passenger jet. I am not excusing their actions, just saying that shootdowns in international waters do occur. The US soldiers were killed because they provoked the North by cutting down a tree. A South Korean president has never been assassinated. South Korea provoked the North by blaring anti-government music. The US has provoked North Korea and is a threat.

If you're contrasting North-Korea with Iran, I can see that the Strait of Hormuz is significant, but would it also not make sense that Iran is not close enough to really push for getting nukes. They also seem to lack the unconditional support of very strong allies (how NK has PRC/China) and they have rather strong arch-enemies as well (Israel & Saoudi-Arabia), which are not at all as easy to cripple as SK's Seoul. Making it all a whole lot more dangerous to secretly get nukes because they'd be at risk a whole lot sooner to bet taken out.

What's interesting is that primarily two countries with which the US has an agreement to defend against NK, South Korea and Japan, will be directly threatened by NK's current missile reach. Which means, in the future, if NK gains nuclear weapons, it can hold them hostage more effectively than today. I don't think politicians in SK or Japan would like that situation to arise, so we might see greater pressure on the US to actively strike NK from these countries as well as hardliners in Washington.

North Korea's central strategic mistake is thinking the threat of nukes, or the use of nukes, can or would keep Kim alive and in power. When you realize just how many nukes were tested in the atmosphere by nuke-club members before the anti-atmospheric testing ban, and that all of them were willing to use them in combat at some point (otherwise they wouldn't have been built) and that they are all more likely use them as a retaliatory measure than a primitive strike, to speed the end of a major conflict, whether they talk about using them or not, you then realize this is slowly setting up a situation that's going to end up much more badly for the Korean peninsula, and other pacific rim nations than the conflicts in Northern Africa and the Middle East have been for them, and their neighbors, though everyone caught in such a fight will make sure the North Korean war machine is the hardest hit, and the DPRK suffers the most collateral damage. I think sooner or later, North Korea will become a textbook example of what not to do against the NWO and WarInc, and I say that with all seriousness, and not a shred of personal enjoyment. It will be a manmade calamity on a scale not seen since WWII, but then the world will move on, like it always does, at first there will be no winners, only survivors, but in the aftermath slowly and surely the victors of the conflict would be revealed by history, and seriously doubt the Kim-Clan comes out on top of that bloody exchange. I already consider the North Korean threat serious enough to warrant the total destruction of its naval/air capacity and ballistic/nuke programs. If they counterstrike with a land attack against South Korea, than the destruction of its entire war machine would be warranted, and its uncertain such a poor nation so dedicated to its war machine could survive. Hitler was just one generation into to creating his 3rd-riech cult-of-personality with the Nazi's, but the Kim family are 3 to 4 generations deep into it at this point.

Nukes protect no one. A loving heart protects a loving heart. Weapons are not needed. Kim has a false sense of power and importance. A calm, meek, peacful mind would be admired by the world had Kim decide to cast off what he has now. The world wants to see Kim loving people not oppressing them and imprisoning them not making people to tremble at his presence.

Hey Caspian Report, Can you explain how north Koreas threat of retaliation is being diminished by the technological disparity between her and her enemies? There are no defensive mechanisms against ballistic weapons on the scale that north koreas has them. It is a myth that technological advances in defensive and offense reach some kind of equilibrium at all. To defend against the threat of ballistic weaponry you would need a shield comparable to one the Israel has. And this is already orders of magnitudes more expensive then the weaponry they are facing(and only destroys 90% of projectiles). There is NO defense against proper military capabilities like the ones North Korea has, sadly. Sure you can destroy a substantial amount of incoming projectiles but not even close to enough to be worth it. You maybe know this or might want to look into this if you dont believe me. I love your content and am always happy to learn from your great analysis.

Easy: as a deterrence and also to maintain economic aid from Iran (since they're possibly doing the research for them).

Shirvan, I'm curious as to what would Russia and China do in case US tries to commit to military strikes or straight up invasion. What is your take on this?

What then would be a solution to this nuclear issue? There doesn't seem to be one, because any solution would involve or lead to the demise of the ruler, and that obviously is not acceptable to him.

Something to think about. If North Korea is invaded, what happens to the scientists that have developed their nuclear ability. Once Korea is reunited, a la Germany, said North Korean scientists will end up in the custody of South Korea, to which will use them to start their own nuclear programme to protect themselves from China
