If I were a professional hockey player and made many millions of dollars I would occasionally buy a batch of tickets that weren't being sold and give them a away to the fans.

NHL teams and players often have a batch of tickets available for sick kids and the like. It is one of my favorite things that pro sports does.

They do and they give them to kids or handicapped people and so on. They don't give them to random people who may or may not deserve them, which is fair. But an average NHL game shouldn't cost the price of football (soccer..) world cup games, ridiculous.

Sick kids and military veterans. So they can tell people they are good people and parade them infront of the cameras. And many players actually does what you say and gets nice rewards for it like Brent Burns for disabled vets. And that was just the example I could come up with.

My fellow Americans and I love sports. I think most non-NHL fans in America just don't understand the game. NHL/hockey has speed, skill, toughness and excitement. I didn't became an NHL fan until 1994 (19yo) and I'm the only one in my family who likes hockey. I raised my daughters to enjoy hockey and they do, but you need to take people to a live NHL game. If the Coyotes move to Quebec, that means the defending champions Tampa Bay Lightning would have to be forced to move to the Western Conference, which isn't a bad idea. Miami and Tampa teams are in different conferences, and while I'd welcome a FLA-TB rivalry, hockey is need in QUE and it makes more sense to move the Coyotes to QUE.

It will be very interresting to see back the Nordiques in Quebec. But we must know that since Gary Bettman entered the NHL from the NBA ... the Nordiques were gone by 1995 & Winnipeg by 1996. Winnipeg came back in 2011 from Atlanta. Before that Quebec & Winnipeg went to the Usa ... The Coliseum & the Winnipeg Arena were pretty a crowded house at each games thus and Bettman does not want to bring back the Nordiques in the NHL, whatsoever, even that Quebec has built the new building for 400 Millions. Quebec is a hockey city as for Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Speaking of Montreal & Toronto ... when Vancouver first offered to get in the NHL in 1967, both cities were against the idea and in 1970 they still were. When Quebec gets in 1979 ... Montreal were against and still are today. I would say for the Montreal Fans that their team only missed the playoffs once in 1995 while Quebec were in the NHL (the fact of having a rivalry motivates the teams on the ice). Since Quebec left for Colorado ... Montreal have missed regularly the playoffs since. Finally, by having a team in Las Vegas ... it won't help, whatsoever, the cap salaries in the NHL ... Bettman & the Board of Governers are ruling the game unfortunately ...

Jacques Parizeau said: (I'm paraphrasing here) 'We're so goddamn poor, look at me, I firing nurses left and right. You want a new arena for your silly Nordiques? You must be joking''. In the same time frame, he also said this: (Still paraphrasing) 'We're rich enough to become our own country'. We all know how that worked out, right? Canada still lives, thanks to its greatest unsung hero (however unintentional he may have been): Jacques Parizeau, the man who saved Canada, but killed the Nordiques. True story, ask anyone willing enough to fact-check it.

Quebec didn't drop out of trying to get a team. They were deferred. And now they're being threatened to have Seattle get the next team before them. Frankly, they don't need to purchase an expansion franchise. There are plenty of struggling franchises already that need to be rectified. How long can the league continually justify having the Coyotes in Phoenix when they've never turned one single profit, and they don't draw decent attendance, even when they're winning? That's the definition of a money pit. The NHL must be scared to try to make more money. Any legit business man would tell you they wouldn't invest in a market that hasn't turned a profit after a couple years, never mind over two decades. And a team wouldn't be taken away again if Quebec got a team. They have a modern building where the team can make money. Management just has to follow the blueprint set by Winnipeg. You know you'll make money in Quebec. You're not making money in Sunrise, Arizona or Carolina. And it's the successful teams that are having to continually prop-up these money-pit franchises.

as someone who doesn't make much, I hope to myself that I would not be a part of the problem if I was an NHL'er, but it's hard to say unless you've walked a mile in their shoes. it would be nice if one of these years, players on a team decided to take pay cuts in order to keep the group together (example- when teams win a cup, and then suddenly all want tons more money, the team can't afford them anymore, so they are split up and sent away) in order to win more cups. but the goal of making it more affordable to your fans would be amazing too. I agree that salary cap should take a break from going up for a little while

The best thing that Quebec could do is to not think about expansion fee of 650 million but instead try to figure out how to pry the Panthers as its value estimated is only 186 million.
@pomerlain8924

But part of that is Bettman and his Board of Governors have to wake up and realize that it's not worth keeping teams like Arizona and the Panthers afloat when they're not drawing fans, and not making any money. Florida was in the playoff push, and they still could hardly draw to their games. The league has to ask themselves is that really growing the game?

Off topic but I hate that the NHL has a hard cap. I would LOVE it if the NHL adopted the NBA's cap system. There's a salary cap but teams can go over it they just have to pay a luxury tax that is divided among the teams below the cap. It's the fairest salary cap system imo. Oh, and don't give me this bs about it favouring big markets. For the past few years Cleveland has had the highest payroll in the NBA. Hardly a large market.

This is a sensitive question but here goes. I love QC and have a blast whenever I go there (I am a Minnesotan not a Canadian so I don't go as often as I would like to). The history, the blended nature of the city (both architecturally and culturally speaking), the beautiful nature and a damn good plate of poutine make it an awesome place to visit for an Anglophone here in North America. Not to mention the marathon is a damn good one! But would such an exotically different market attract quality players? Of course the Francophone Canadians would have no issues culturally there, but would Finns, Swedes, Americans or Russians want to play there? Quebec is not like Montreal, which is a mixed city. It is bascially monolingual and French Canadians are very protective of their culture (which I understand). Not to mention the monolingual nature of the area cause certain marketing concerns? Would Anglophone Canadians support or watch the team in any meaningful way (there is most certainly serious underlying tension between Quebec and the ROC although separation no longer appears to be a real concern)? I bet they would attract some support from the New England region of the US (especially Vermont, Maine and NH) and possibly Wisconsin and MN (Wisconsin lacks and team and the MN Wild are a joke of a franchise in just about every way possible and are not endearing themselves to your average MN even though they operate in a hockey crazed region). But this is all speculation on my part. I for one would love to see a team back in QC. In the meantime for any Canucks reading this hockey keeps getting bigger and bigger here in the States so the future looks bright as a whole for the NHL! When I was growing up in the 90s if you had ever told me Blackhawk tickets or Stars tickets would go for as much as Chicago Bulls or Dallas Cowboy tickets I would have laughed! But here we are!

Quebec City is the ultimate place for a franchise. It may be a bit small, but the people truly cared about ice hockey and have great support. How can the Canadian dollar sink amazingly and have the Nordiques and Jets move South to the States? Colorado is good, but how did Phoenix get a franchise? 2 words: population growth. They have Winnipeg back and Quebec is the true place to have a team with a new arena being built. I would not think the Nordiques moniker is necessary, other names like Remparts, Blizzard, Flowers and my favorite Bulldogs are great names as well. The possible expansion effort might be at least 2019 with other cities like Kansas City, Seattle, Madison (Wisconsin) and few others would be a proposed 32nd team. Other option is relocation with teams from Florida, Carolina, Arizona and Anaheim (West Coast) struggling to draw fans, they would have to approve the league to move to that place. Only time will tell.

Other than QUE, the only other Canadian markets I can see the NHL expanding to are Halifax and Saskatoon. The US will always have a large advantage on Canada on many levels. At least when the dollar was at par, hockey was equally viable on both sides of the border. That's not the case now, so other factors become more important too.

Quebec City is questionable. It has a population of about 570,000. It has 13 corporate headquarters but it is located in the middle of nowhere. Perhaps Colorado can play some of their home games in the New Centre Vidéotron wearing Nordique sweaters. Maybe even the odd playoff game.

I don't get this thing about increasing the cap. Some people say it allows a team to get better players. But doesn't that also help inflate salaries? I don't know exactly how salaries work, but I'd expect that caps help keep salaries manageable. If you get a player for half of the salary cap, then the rest of your team is going to be bad. And aren't the best players also interesting in playing in competitive teams? And maybe the teams don't want to pay that much for a single player, and so he'll lower his demands. But if you increase the cap, then some players could be like "now you can afford to pay me more, else I go elsewhere". I don't know, I don't think increasing the cap helps the teams at all. If anything, considering how ridiculously well paid the players are, and how expensive are ticket prices, the cap should go down.

Sounds like a plan but in reality, not a chance. This is the"Bettman Era",expansion is south of the 49th and any Canadian teams having problems better get their ducks in a line.Phoenix on the other hand has the backing of the league, because expansion is the whole of the USA.IF,they do eventually move,it won't be Quebec,it will be Houston. They are trying to sell the game to people who are not yet fans.True, passionate hockey fans will watch and get behind a team reguardless.(The strike,Junior hockey was the winner).

Hey Hockey Guy, Somethings has to give someday !!! If Canadian teams continue to collect revenue from the same Canadian fan base and continue to pay their players in US Dollars then that team will not survive any much longer if they become better Stanley Cup contenders. If you look at the Canadian based teams in the NHL outside of Montreal and Toronto, they won't survive too much longer if the disparity between Canadian teams and American teams become so great, thus creating an unfair advantage towards the US based teams. You wonder why their hasn't been a Canadian based team winning the coveted Stanley Cup since 1993??? Hmmm????

Simple. The CAD is too low, that's why... I can see the 32nd team being in Seattle and once the CAD is worth more, either Carolina, Arizona or Florida will relocate to Québec. The other two teams will probably relocate to Hartford and Saskatoon/Portland ideally. Then, we will have 32 teams that are well located finally.

It's rich fans and poor fans too that are the problem. Stop obsessing over these athletes. Boycott teams until the owners lower ticket prices. Sure you will have the rich fans willing to pay 500 a ticket for decent seats but the majority are poor fans and if they stop going it's going to look barren and that will hit them in the wallet. And why don't owners realize, league wide, that they can pay these hockey players min of 80,000 and top out at 500,000 and you will still get the same caliber of player showing up wanting to be a hockey star over working at a car dealership. Imagine making even just 80 grand a year to play a sport and not do construction or plumbing or work in a mine? There is no way the owners don't know this. It's something to do with getting a stadium built by the average tax payer, getting tax kick backs for paying players more or having some kind of loop hole in place where they can make a profit off of these players making 20 million. They have some kind of secret rich man scam going on. Otherwise of course they would be paying their players less while still charging a fortune for tickets. It's all corrupt and really stop acting like cheerleaders for these grown men playing a child's game.

Well considering the fact the Coyotes have NEVER turned a profit in over 20 years, and can't draw flies even when they have ticket specials, they are costing the NHL money. The same with the Panthers, who lose $10 million a year. Because guess who subsidizes these money pits? The profitable teams, and that includes all 7 Canadian teams, which make up a third of the league's annual revenue. I don't know about you, but I'd rather see a team in smaller market Quebec City that's making money and selling out every night as opposed to a bigger market team like Florida or Arizona constantly losing money and playing in a half-empty arena every night.
