This was brilliant. The pollution theory was a stroke of genius as well as how they couldn't fight if their talons were holding members of the Company. But I completely disagree with the idea that Mordor was as full of fell flying beasts as a chicken coop. I seem to remember in ROTK that it had been one brood, apt to evil, that Sauron had somehow come across.

I think we have a clear idea from the canon. One brood found in some mountain eyrie 'cold under the moon'. It's possible he tried to breed some more but they would have been the results of incest so, and probably unfit. Jackson's design I always found ridiculous. Enormous lizard-like things with long necks and tails. A great mass of muscle - not even remotely capable of flight. I think they were probably more like those huge Pacific mangrove bats. Warm-blooded, thin bones and not reptilian. I long thought that maybe they were the last of the ancestors of the dragons themselves. But a Royal Mordor Airforce Sauron did not possess!

@@cerberus6654 yeh I’ve thought before that the design of the beasts in the movie might have been loosely inspired by the “black serpent” (harad chief) reference in the books which Theoden defeated on the Pelennor fields. It does describe a long naked neck, but yeh, not really a reptile.

You make a strong case but there's a few things. First, if eagles were so scared of arrows, they wouldn't have attacked a goblin army and I have a hard time believing an arrow can take down something as big as a lear jet. Feathers make great armor according to that animal tier list channel. I think they were gaslighting gandalf. These things are middle earth royalty. Elves are peasants compared to them. It's like me asking King Charles to do errands. He's going to give me a polite excuse that really means, 'don't hold your breath.' But that's my head cannon so whatever. Second, these things belong to middle earth Zeus. They're not big birds. They beat up dragons. Big ones. And didn't Shadowfax magically appear soon after Gandalf got dropped off? Coincidence? I think not. Shadowfax was a faster ride and Gandalf needed speed. The Eagle knew that and wouldn't just drop Gandalf off in a big field. So I think the eagles are a bit more 'activist' than you give them credit. I think they didn't want the eagles to take the ringbearer for the same reason they didn't want to give the ring to Galadriel. Because we'd get DARK LORD EAGLE. A Megadeth album cover if ever I heard it. I think we've discussed this before. I believe that the most correct answer, and the only true deal breaker for Elrond's council begins at minute 10. Great video as always.

Why wouldn't flying the ring to mordor have worked? Well there's these things we call arrows...

No, I cant agree. The "fell beasts" you speak of are not described at all by Tolkien. Only the mount of the witch king is described and that beast was unique. There is no reason to think the steeds of the Nazgul would be anything like a match for the eagles. The eagles certainly had no reluctance to attack them in the battle before the black gates.

I’m not sure if you watched the whole video. But also the fell beast was described as “greater than all other birds”. The handicapped Eagles would have had a tough time.

@@FairlyFictional I don't recall that line from LOTR. I think it's in the Silmarillion. The eagles would not be handicapped since they would have a hundred eagles as escort. Tolkien had one thing to say when people brought this idea of the Eagles up to him. He said "Shut up."

@@fl4shblade Yes, that term is used to describe the Which King's mount, but that critter was the last of it's kind. What the other Nazgul were riding is not described at all beyond 'winged creature'. All we know of them is that a single arrow can bring one down.

@@brianofphobos8862 that is simply your interpretation. it is stated nowhere that the other nazgul's winged mounts were lesser. they didn't have lesser horses so why would they get lesser flying beasts. that doesn't make sense for sauron to do in the first place. the one legolas shot "vanished in the gloom", kill not confirmed!
