Why not SWITCH OFF all the EMPTY CRUISE SHIPS? Laying up the World's Fleet of Cruise Ships Explored.

As the Coronavirus Pandemic swept the globe, cruise ships and cruise lines found themselves in the unprecedented position of having to plan and undertake a global cruising shut down.
Once the passengers were safely disembarked, cruise lines had the unenviable task of laying up their ships.
Cruise Lines have several options when considering laying up their ships: Warm Layup or Cold Layup.
Warm Layup - otherwise known as Hot Layup - is when an operational ship is withdrawn from service - usually temporarily - yet is maintained in a largely static but operational state.
Ships in warm layup operate utilising their own engines. With the exception of usual shore side services - such as replenishing food and beverage stores, medical supplies, fuel and the like.
Their engines provide power to maintain onboard services, including hotel services, air conditioning, water treatment, desalination and propulsion.
The uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 - and when its devastating effect on global travel might start to dwindle - has led to most ships around the world being maintained in a state of warm layup.
Let’s look at the cluster of ships in Manila Bay, as of early June 2020, include vessels from Cunard, P&O Australia, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Aida, Holland America and Carnival, all of which remain operational and powered by their own engines.
These ships are fully independent of shore side power, reliant on the Philippines only for food supply as well as good will.
Keen observers will notice these ships weighing anchor and periodically heading out to sea. As these operational ships need to head further offshore to acquire sea water for desalination as well as discharge treated grey water which - although as clean as shore-side treated water - must only be discharged a certain distance from land - depending on the laws governing the region where a ship is based.
Shutting down a ship is what’s known as Cold Layup.
This is when a ship is deactivated and moored or anchored with a minimal crew.
When a ship enters cold layup, its engines are shut down. This has the primary benefit of reducing the ongoing fuel costs, however it comes with a catch. With engines deactivated, all of the onboard services that rely on power have to either be provided with alternative shore side power, or mothballed.
If shore side power is required, the ship will need berthing space - which can often be an expensive proposition.
And with hundreds of ships inactive due to the cruising pause finding berthing space can be quite difficult, which is why we see so many ships currently at anchor.
But what about cold layup with a ship at anchor? Well if shore side power is not going to be used, then many of the services aboard the ship need to be switched off as the ship will be operating on minimal backup power to maintain safety systems such as fire suppression and emergency lighting.
This means that everything else needs to be turned off, emptied and cleaned. This includes all hotel services - which is a bigger job than you might think because water pipes need to be depressurised, water treatment deactivated, sewage tanks emptied; and on the other end of the spectrum food stores need to be removed, anything requiring ongoing maintenance would need to be mothballed and preserved for future use.
Depending on the climate where the ship is being laid up it could get very hot and humid onboard, or cold and damp, both of which might result in artworks, and furnishings needing to be removed.
With the uncertainty around how long the cruise pause will actually last - and the length of time it takes to both deactivate and reactivate a ship from cold layup - as well as the costs involved with this process and potentially berthing a ship - it just doesn’t make financial sense for the ships to be in cold layup at this point.
There is another option where a ship is berthed and receives power from shoreside to allow it to maintain operational status, whilst not using its own engines. This can work well for some smaller cruise ships with a lower energy requirement, with some ships having been built to easily accommodate shoreside power.
HAPAG-Lloyd’s Europa is one example - with the ship currently alongside in Hamburg receiving power from renewable sources.

And also if the cruise ships are shut down for long periods of time you get what we call stale air circulating through the whole ship another words it’ll be stinking in an order to flush that stale air out it would take a long time for that to happen when you restart a ship and have it circulation system back on
@JainZar1
@JainZar1 4 жыл бұрын
You also need to keep the ventilation and fresh-/blackwater systems operational, since contamination in ventilation or freshwater (Legionaries disease for example) would risk making the whole ship unusable till a complete refit. Similar to a house. A non-functional blackwater/sewage system is also grounds for complete inoperability of the ship.

Its really not the stale air that woukd get me. More of the mold accumulated from the AC system not functioning which in turn acts like SDS (Sick Building Syndrome). Also the water systems, bilge pumps, ect that need to be running otherwise the vessel will sink or be a toxic wasteland more than they are already.

Maybe I missed it in the video, but another factor that makes warm layup more financially and operationally sensible is the relatively low cost of fuel at the moment.

I was on a super tanker a couple of decades ago. Where we laid her up in Brunei bay in Borneo. As far as I know, They had to plug all inlet outlet pipes and place dehumidifiers to take the moisture out of the air and seal the whole ship. It was sad to see 100s of ships lined up in a straight line, just waiting their fate

the trend towards larger and larger cruise ships makes using shoreside power difficult due to the very large demand. In many island ports the ship will use as much power as the entire shore community. Very few docks are set up to provide this amount of power and in many places the ship can make its own power more cheaply. Your comments about inside the ship conditions are right on the mark, things tend to get mouldy rather quickly and once that gets into things it is very difficult to bring things back to a usable condition. Shutting down machinery is one thing but getting it to restart is an even more difficult operation. Dock space is often very expensive, in the range of $50k per day, if you can get it. In all it makes most sense for the lines to keep their ships in warm layup and a large natural harbor like Manila Bay is ideal with the benefit of having all kinds of ship services available with only a phone call.

This is similar reasoning as to why airlines are periodically making empty flights with their parked planes. The maintenance required after they sit for an extended period of time is more expensive than taking them for a short empty flight to keep them in active status.

Some airlines are also providing cargo flights with passenger planes too during the pandemic. It's definitely not optimal, but the aircraft can still be used that way, carrying smaller cargo on the passenger deck pretty much the same way as carrying stuff on the back seat of your car, and the normal cargo pallets on the bottom cargo deck that any passenger plane has to carry luggage. It's been quite important for some emergency supplies like masks and COVID-19 tests. Also, some aircraft can be quickly converted between freighters and passenger aircraft, the so called "combi" ones, usually a movable divider provides a selectable bigger cargo area or passenger seating (of course, having to remove seats and carpeting, dunno if the do it in modules that can be slid out like cargo pallets, but that would be interesting if so). Those usually (or always?) also include the big pallet loading cargo door on the upper deck too.

Despite the bad situation , many cruise ports have had unusual cruise ships calling in, for crew repatriation or lay up.

In respect to cold lay up I think that there is one parameter, not mentioned. Crew members would have to be repatriated, while the ship remains de-activated or stay at other facilities. With air travelling being suspended this is obviously not a choice and staying at shore facilities is also not a choice for financial reasons. On the other hand so many seafarers and also other employess have been stuck onboard cruise vessels for months.

One thing you didn't mention with regards to cold lay ups is that these are still ships, power needs to be available at all times for the basic engineering systems, specifically pumps. Bilge pumps need to be powered at all times, regardless of the state of the vessel, though you can get away without them for short periods, if you're lucky. The other pumps you need are the ballast pumps in order to avoid listing. You did mention fire fighting systems though and in all fairness these systems can overlap on some vessels. But more than anything else, even if your ship is completely switch off, you still need pumps. Things can happen in even the safest of anchorages, and without pumps a ship can sink or capsize surprisingly quickly. Now if you have shore power and a modern computer controlled ballast system, you can get away with small engineering crew maintaining a whole bunch of ships while living out of a shore hotel. Of course since you already have a hotel (i.e. the ship itself), not to mention your own power generators, it's just as easy to leave at least the engineering crew on board. Also it tends not to be for mechanical systems, like engines, to be sitting idle for long periods. Interestingly this is something modern equipment is more prone to, since we generally use finer tolerances in our machines for increased efficiency. Sometimes those tolerances are so fine, that if not in use or stored correctly it's actually possible for components to effectively weld themselves together. Which can be quite annoying when you come to turn your ship back on. Doesn't do the hydraulic systems (oil or water) much good either to be siting idle.

While the answer was obvious, you gave people a lot more detail and explained things in an entertaining way... in other words, the answer was techinical, but fun enough to capture the joy of cruising. Good job! I'm afraid I've only been on one cruise, on the Carnival ship "Carnivale," launched in 1956 as the "Empress of Britain." This may have been an older ship, but she was immaculately maintained. Also, since she was built for the trans-Atlantic route between Great Britain and Canada, her roll compensation system kept the Florida to the Bahamas sail as smooth as glass. You could have placed a billiard ball in the centre of a table amidships and I swear it wouldn't have moved an inch upon her return to her home port in Florida. The only bad thing was that the weather was unseasonable cold, keeping us from enjoying the outside. I remember going for a 10Km run in Freeport and actually seeing long icicles on the banana trees! As far as the weather was concerned, the only people who had a worse trip that week were on the space shuttle Challenger... yes, that Challenger... we found out in Nassau. That put every soul onboard in a state of numb shock. At mealtime, it was silent as a church in mourning... Despite all this, the Carnivale left me with a good impression of cruising, and I hope to sail again when cruising again starts up. Thank you for your interesting video. You've really reawakened my desire to cruise again.

Even when a ship is at anchor. At least one engine is on always. To make fine adjustments using thrusters or pods. To cold shut down a cruise ship would require every member to be removed. From a mechanical aspect letting large machinery sit in a corosive environment for many months without being run weekly can lead to high repair and maintenance bills I've never worked on a ship but I've worked on a large number of vessels with thru Hull propulsion with large amounts of rust and corrosion in the engine bay due to the shaft and rudder packing not being up to par

What do they think hospitals, hotels, and large office buildings are? Shut any of those down for a while with the potential for reactivating it later and it becomes a potential bio and/or toxic hazard to enter one of those areas. Trust me I had to do it a few times in the military on official scavenging jobs to retrieve parts and machinery that was no longer made from some mothballed facilities we had to keep a few things working before we had the newer replacements all installed.

Trust me, moving everything off a ship is a never ending affair, even with a large crew an offload usually means about a month or so of labor some removal, decommissioning and dismantling of everything on board. And ships usually need air conditioning running to even keep the ship habitable even for just a skeleton crew.

Where are all the Viking ships? We had booked to sail on the 'Viking Sun" ...'Mumbai through Mediterranean Passage' for 30 days .April 3 to May 2, this year which was cancelled. We are hopeful that the cruises will begin again after the pandemic is over. We are looking to cruise on the Viking Sun scheduled to sail form Mumbai to Venice...'Footsteps to Antiquity' in April 2021. When I spoke to a Viking representative she was not certain about cruises in 2021.With the pandemic still raging in the U.S. and countries blocking visitors from the U.S. the future for cruising looks very uncertain.

many cruise lines simply let their boats drift off into the seas, most major ports charge over $25k per hour for docking , when the ships are needed again their location can be tracked electronically and the cruise line will drop the crew off by helcopter to bring them back to port.

Another big reason is most ships are using Bunker C which has to be heated over 250f degrees to flow properly. If they shut down the ship, before hand they have to remove all fuel, purge all the fuel lines of fuel because once Bunker C has cooled down it has the consistancy of black goo. So it is easier to keep the ships warm and running .

Tom Christman Tom. Is that true that cruise ships use heavy oil? I’ve never worked them but considering the amount of work and machinery needed to burn heavy oil in a medium speed diesel I would be surprised. Of course if they did they have the capability to switch to light oil before they shut down. Regards, Bill

Negative to bunker c, these are all motor ships and fuel specifications are very concise, otherwise big problems with fuel pumps and injectors.. Plus now there's alot of environmental restrictions to fuel components, like low sulfur etc.

@@erikjohansson1814 -- I'm ex-Navy and I suspect that I've spent more time at sea than you have. Even steel ships leak. Ever noticed the water dumping overboard from a ship? It had to come from *somewhere* ... You have various hull penetrations in the ship -- rudder, screw shaft, etc. They are going to leak slightly and that water will eventually end up in the bilge. And then there is the fact that for the extremely large ships, you are going to get some flex and to expect something that big to not leak just a little is just hopeful thinking. Some of the old warships that have been retired and are now "floating museums" have corroded so much that they are constantly running pumps to keep them from becoming flooded. Often, they are not really floating anymore, but rather just sitting on the silt / mud of wherever they are berthed. I've seen some of the smaller cargo ships in some of the 3rd world ports where, given the apparent condition of the topside portion of the ship, I would not expect the portion below the waterline to be any better, so the only thing keeping the ships afloat was their bilge pumps.

For any of these gorgeous ships that dont have immediate normal sailing payloads, there must be suitible ports where special luxury or hospital accomodations and such are in short supply, and can be supplied temporarily and indefinitely with all these ships while unused completely as such now. Rather than just sit and rot at anchor, what about pioneering the off-season uses of these great things in ways and even better reasons than those guiding their original intentions, predictions, plans and designs? I'm suggesting that similar to these oceanliner ships, passenger airliners are being now routinely used entirely differently than before just after easy, cheap, quick conversions into cargoliners, firefighters, military adaptations such as ASW, troop carriers, aerial refueling, scientific expedition, surveyal, etc. and back again, as needed with enormous savings to all parties for all types of projects involved by retaining equity through each role change and maintaining good and vital use of them now, not later, worldwide. Such may be an entirely new, untapped and wide open market for these extremely valuable oceanliner assets, as is.

They are running on generators, generally they don't run the propulsion engines to produce electricity unless it is an electric drive. It's stuff like the air conditioning that is important to keep up and running that uses lots of power. They have to keep moisture under control throughout the ship or stuff will corrode, get moldy and grow bacteria.

These monstrous ship create their own atmospheres and humidity buildup can literally create clouds inside the hull, so this must be mechanically kept in check, much unlike the mothball of an aircraft that can be stored in a dry climate. Shutting the ship down is much like shutting down a small city, the many ancillary systems will quickly deteriorate.

Interesting about these ships being self-sufficient. How much power could they output? The capital in New Zealand had a black-out and a ship berthed there at the time offered to hook into the grid.
@henryostman5740
@henryostman5740 4 жыл бұрын
the larger cruise ships have about 100,000 hp, most of the newer ones are all electric (electric motor drive), this allows each of the main engines to be tasked as need, for either propulsion or hotel power, generally about 25% is used for hotel purposes, very rarely do cruise ships go anywhere near full speed this would consume too much fuel. Engines are put out of service for maintenance generally if at sea there is a proviso that it can be brought back up if need within a number of hours, port periods are used when planned maintenance will take longer. If such a ship was tied into a shore grid it could probably add 30- 40,000 kws to the system after its own needs.
Where are all the empty cruise ships now?
