@SketchRC
@SketchRC 5 жыл бұрын
Modern engines are built for auto start stop. Engineers know these issues and they resolve them by modifying oil pumps, starters, alternators, and batteries to cope with the extra cycles. I don’t understand why auto start stop is a bad idea, but hey, maybe that’s because I’m an automotive engineer and I know more than most people about this stuff.

@erichg.6235 5 жыл бұрын
OK, its good for the engine and the battery (aircon keeps running while start/stop is active, music and light is on) to start and stop every 2 or 3 minutes in stop-and go traffic. Even I stick an hour or longer in a traffic jam. Mhh, no, mr. engineer, i don't use start/stop automatic. In a year 1000 or more times starting the Motor, in 10 years more then 10.000 unnecessary starting the engine?
@SketchRC
@SketchRC 4 жыл бұрын
beckys2222 By that logic, we should have hand cranks on all of our cars to start them. Things don’t just break randomly. An auto start stop will be designed for the same life as a regular starter motor system. It’ll break just as quickly as whatever you’ve got.

As bad as this monstrosity of a system is mechanically, it's the electronics that I would be most worried about. The engine will only stop after many sensors and computers talk to each other and report their parameters to see if it's a good idea to stop the engine at that given time. I'm sure I'm missing some but (both) battery voltages, outside temperature, cabin temperature, coolant temperature, oil temperature, whether the car is on flat ground or a hill, how long the car has been stopped and how much pressure is on the brake pedal, air conditioner or heater use, and any other devices drawing current. I'm sure I'm missing some. And if any one of these sensors or computer chips fail you'll get a service engine light at best and a car that strands you (or gets you in an accident) at worst

A tech relation: Years ago IBM invented it's 'airbag' system for laptop hard drives. If a sensor detected vertical movement it would park the hard drive's read/write heads. This prevented them from hitting the surface of the drive when the movement stopped, which could destroy that part of the drive. The problem? Like that crankshaft, the drives were only rated for a limited number of park cycles, so while they didn't get damaged from drops/jolts, they died prematurely because the read/write heads wore out.

Later, technology called the SSD completely eliminated that problem, meaning you could bolt your laptop to a jackhammer and the HDD would be fine with no performance loss. Tech may not be perfect the first time, but that doesn't mean it won't get there. My little quadcopter has over 2 HP (actually 2 kW), and the motors stacked would still fit easily in your pocket, not to mention the batteries it runs can start a lawn mower (or possibly a small car), and they can also fit in your pocket (I carry half a dozen in my jacket). Pretty sure you could just make a non-geared (brussless motor ring, about 2ft diameter) connected right to the shaft and spin up a motor almost instantly.

My best pal has a 2009 Prius going on 280,000 miles. The only thing that went bad is the ABS braking module. This is so on point! I thought the same thing when I heard about it. Engine start up creates the most wear in an engine. I own a jeep wrangler jk and I'm so glad I got it when I did. Got bare bones sport. I only wish I bought a manual. All the new ones have it and apparently you need to buy a 200 dollar box to bypass it. No thank you. Yeah they all have limits to how much and how frequent and for how long they'll shut off, but they can still be annoying in extra urban traffic. To me the best solution to control the start stop would be brake pressure with a foot- felt click. Drivers usually know when we don't want the engine to shut off and when we do. We're watching lights and traffic in front so we can predict the worthiness of an engine shutdown. Ford F150 has an override button, but it has to be remembered and it resets when the key is turned off, so not ideal. Most of them have tricks one can do to override. Hook up a false trailer connector, turn on regular a.c. versus hybrid a.c., go to tow- haul mode, defrost, etc, but none of those are ideal. Best if we control at the brake. We can always remember that and keep our attention on driving. Self driving is science fiction for when we colonize Mars. This is what cell phone prioritizers want, so they can go from mostly distracted driving to being totally distracted.
@JamesSmullins
@JamesSmullins 6 жыл бұрын
Yosef MacGruber this is a lot further off than companies like tesla want you to believe. In order for self driving cars to work they need perfect well marked roads. If the lines are faded, covered up or in any way not absolutely perfect the sensors can't read them. This has been the failing point every time as is it's ability to deal with other vehicles around them changing speeds. Changing lanes for example is risky if a vehicle in the other lane decides to accelerate. I also suspect self driving cars will actually slow traffic as they will force larger spaces between vehicles and during turns at intersections fewer cars will turn per light cycle. We humans will hurry through to make the light but the safety measures of a self driving car will not. The end result may well be worse traffic.

Toyota must be laughing to the bank with all that extra starter cash they'll be making. If they cared, they would make the starter motors brushless so that they dont wear out with so many uses, but that would be expensive. It's easier for them to use old-fashioned start motors so that you'll send it back to them so they replace the brushes and sell it back to you at full price.

I just got a KIA Stinger with this and it does have a button to disable it. For the stop/start to work though specific conditions have to be met or it disables itself. Engine has to be warm, AC can't be on (wont work without the compressor turning) and the coolant can't be too hot either. It also monitors the batteries current charge and if it drops below 73% it disables start/stop. The next cool thing about it though is it doesn't start the engine when you press the gas, it starts it when you let off the brake. You can let off the brake about halfway where the car will start but not move yet so you can anticipate lights and have the engine ready to go. I have to say it's about the least intrusive stop/start solution I've seen and it starts super quick. To top it off if you stop when you pull into your driveway and the engine shuts down you can just push the stop engine button and it puts the car in park and doesn't turn the engine back on. Bottom line, there are different ways to tackle some of the issues with stop start, and manufacturers are using these technologies to make it reliable and as least intrusive as they can. If it saves some gas and maybe some pollution why not give it a chance?

I just bought a 2019 Toyota Highlander XLE with this feature. When I took it in for the 5K checkup, I asked the mechanic if start/stop would hurt the vehicle over the long term. Now I am certain to deactivate it everytime I crank her up. Thanks Scotty!

*Thanks for confirming what I suspected from day one* . The first time I saw a car with a stop/start idling feature I was thinking: "Boy, all that stopping and starting is going to be hard on the engine." Good to know from an actual mechanic that my intuition was right. My impression of most car buyers is that they're stupid. If you tell someone they'll save 3-10% on gas mileage, I guarantee you most of them won't look any further into it. Most consumers are trained to accept the first number thrown at them and most (maybe as high as 95%) do no further investigation and no further questioning beyond that. They're well trained sheep. Since I know a little something about engines and electronic equipment, I know that the stop/start phase is the most taxing on the system. Engines work best when you start them, let them run a long time, and then stop them. Constant stopping and starting damages the motor. I don't have any vehicles with stop/start anti-idling features in them, but I've driven cars with them before and find them annoying. The moment that feature came out, it was added to my list of "features to avoid" on new cars.

Been a mechanic for over 50 years and overall I agree that these start stop systems are going to cost the end user big time! That being said, I can’t agree with the start stop causing any measurable wear to bearings, even over an extended period of time as the parameters under which they work are the best conditions for a restart ie engine warm and oil less viscous and able to reach full pressure almost instantly. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to not have these systems the most important being premature starter and battery failures not to mention leaving one stranded in traffic which in my opinion could be dangerous. Just purchased a new GM vehicle that has the system and it can not be turned off, but I’ve found a way to defeat it without throwing a code or throwing off any of the other systems. I pull the gear select lever into L when I stop and then when traffic starts moving, I simply shift back into drive before taking my foot off the brake and presto, problem solved as the transmission must be in drive for the system to function.

As mentioned, at least some of the GM vehicles do not have a switch to turn off the system. However I found that in the previous gen Malibu I have, it can be controlled by the amount of pressure on the break pedal. Just before the car comes to a complete stop, I can back off the pressure (but there is still plenty to stop), the system will not engage. I will do this for stop and go traffic or a stop sign. However when coming up to red light that just changed and I know I will be stopped there for a few minutes, I keep more pressure on the brake pedal and the engine will stop. Works well and is easy to do. My preference would be to not have the system at all. There is really no cost savings when considering the much higher battery cost, the higher initial cost for putting the system in the car, and more maintenance.

More batteries and starter motors to fail. I can't imagine its great for the engine either. The system is also useless when its at either heat extremity outside, In California it would be useless because everyone has AC on all the time and the heat outside is stressing the battery anyway. In Winter its useless because everyone has the heat on in their cars and the cold outside is stressing the battery. You have to have a very moderate climate for it to work well and this is also true of the new Tesla electric cars which operate best in temperatures of 20 degrees Celsius.

With due respect there are several manufacturers (mostly European) that have circumvented all the weaknesses of the system of Start/Stop. VW/Porche/Audi is one. Smooth as can be operation virtually seamless and do NOT compromise the longevity of the starter nor alternator systems and don't compromise the cooling systems either. The American cars I'm sorry to say are more so the one's that have compromised designs. My 2020 VW Tiguan has it and it's remarkable and so smooth, quiet and virtually unnoticed in operation. This has been confirmed by a neighbors son who is a top VW mechanic for a big dealer who explained this all to me. Said he has to date NEVER replaced an alternator nor starter for any VW over the last 4 years. The technology has at least come that far.

He said it should be up to the buyer to decide if they want that and the secondary resale market will drive the sales of these systems. If people looking for used cars want this technology, they will only buy cars with it and that will drive new buyers to opt for these systems. These systems add $1000's of cost to new cars.

LOL! Scotty, I've seen so many times these vehicles, as they wait for a red light, creep up and up and up and all this time, they start over and over and over maybe 4 or five times during one single wait at a light.

I’m guessing the car only had to last just past the warranty- if start stop gets the fleet average up that’s better than a car lasting 5 years past the warranty

Ah yes, fleet fuel economy. The pressure on car manufacturers to meet stricter and stricter standards is great. 3 % improvement doesn't sound like a lot, but if a car manufacturer can use this to improve economy just a little more, every little bit helps. Remember the Cadillac Cimarron from the 1980s? It was essentially a Chevy Cavalier with a more luxurious interior. Wasn't really a Cadillac, but it did help with fleet fuel economy. Perhaps ironically, better fuel economy is probably not the right approach to save energy. Cities built around car dependence probably is. If cities were built in such a way as they are in many places in Asia or Europe, most errands could be done either on foot or by train. A car is something that could be used a few times a week for recreation or on a long trip - which is actually a far better way to enjoy a car! That way, people would drive much less, overall fleet fuel economy wouldn't really matter, and we'd use far less fuel overall!

@@25brentharris I thought that was the case but the 2019 Blazer doesn't have the button. And its really odd because the press photos shows the off button next to the hazards switch but the production model doesn't have it. Oh well. Atleast there are lots of other options. I like that new Passport.

My Honda Ridgeline has auto start/stop with no way to permanently disable it via the factory. I did some research and found a device to disable the auto SS. It cost about $100 and I installed it in literally less than 10 minutes.

Well my Merc is beautiful and a lovely 7 speed Auto with paddle change if switched to Manual mode. Yeah it's diesel but then cruised up to London and back (600 miles) on a tank of fuel at 70 to 80mph. Mine has Stop/Start, works perfectly powered by a different battery in the boot. Does get switched off occasionally I'll admit but that's just the push of a button. Sorry rubbish advice for a diesel, however for a petrol car then it's more sensible NOT to use it.

1:22 I don’t know about the US, but in Europe cars with start stop have AGM batteries to prevent this issue. Start stop will save you 5 to 7% of fuel over lifetime of a car and cars with star stop also have beefier starters. So no, you don’t have to be afraid that you’re engine falls apart or your battery dies and you will also save some fuel on top of that👍🏻

Colin Trout yeah it actually makes more sense in a manual car. I always put it in neutral and lift the clutch when waiting for a light. With a pretty modern car it doesn't take much longer to start the engine than pressing the clutch and going to first. So it's actually not the worst.

I just test drove a 2020 Subaru Legacy Premium with this feature three days ago. I was at a red light and the car shut down and started up twice before the light changed. The stopping wasn't really noticeable, but the restart was. The engine really shudders on Subarus when they restart. That's what really bothered me and to defeat the system you have to go a couple of menus deep into the infotainment system and do it every time you start the car.

I just got a Ford Edge 2022 and I hated that stop/start system... It comes by default and you only get a button to disable it while you are riding the car, turn it off and it resets to auto again... I think the only piece of my car that will have major wear will be that button :)

I work at UPS. Our drivers have to stop the engine at every delivery, and then crank it right back up for the next stop. It may save gas, but our mechanics are constantly changing starters, among other components. Who thinks up these ideas?
