I recommend a video explaining to people how AC/and Cooling systems are sealed systems and no such thing as a top up. If they are low, there is a fault in the system. Great to explain because people selling cars advertise, it just needs a top up. When in fact there is a leak that requires repair and it could be very very costly ( ie; compressor leaking, or internal head gasket leaking).

You're right, my a/c recently had problem, blowing warm air on one side and cold on another. One garage quoted me $1000, dealer quoted me $1200 and up. There is no codes, no leak, compressor working, all actuator working... etc. They said I have to replace the evaporator unit which includes the mixer and the heater. I took the car back and checked everything myself, and I found the evaporator sensor is reading zero to negative even the a/c is off, so I replaced the $40 sensor and everything is working again.

Been a mechanic for 25 years (Industrial Millwright) and working on my own cars has shown me that the car makers really DON'T want you to do your own repairs. Everything is designed to hinder you from doing anything. Simply trying to replace your battery and you are presented with a fastener designed to not release when you undo it to take out the battery. Many fasteners are designed in such a way or are part of a design to try to stop you from undoing them. Pollution devices are also mounted similarly. The brake rotors are held onto the hub with screws that are too long and are exposed to the elements so that they will corrode over time and be very difficult to remove with normal tools. Most times an impact wrench must be used to remove these screws which actually have no reason to be there for your brakes to be properly functioning. I took these screws out and threw them away. They are used to hold the rotors on in the factory when the car is being built. Only one screw is needed for this purpose. On later models, there are 2 screws used. This makes it twice as hard to do as now there are 2 screws that must be removed before the rotor can be removed. I can see in the future, 5 screws being used to make your life even that more difficult. It only gets worse over time, then the government gets involved ! Say goodbye to your freedom and pay cheque.
@yota4205 жыл бұрын
Everything you just listed are things mechanics hate to deal with lol....
@cieumeo5 жыл бұрын
The screws on brake rotor (corrode or not) just need a flat screwdriver + taps by a small hammer, maybe some crc and then loose it before you put the piston backs (brake pads will held the rotor and help to undo the screw). Works for me everytimes...with loads of cars : bmw, mer, maserati, toytota, honda...so on. I don't even have the tool calls brake pad spreader to push piston back, use the big multi grip most of the time (unless screw in piston)... I don't get what you mean about battery, but I do have the hard time to change the battery on.....um cannot remember maybe peugeot, or lift up the f... heavy battery deadly deep inside chassic of Land Rover.

I love this guy. I have the same attitude as Scotty, the reason I fix my own car is because I can trust myself to get the job done right. Did I ever tell you the story about getting my carburetor replaced free under warranty? I figured, what do I have to lose? Problem was the mechanic dropped an easy-out down the throat of my new carburetor. The easy-out out lodged between a valve causing me a trip to the machine shop and an engine rebuild. The dealership responsible for the work agreed to pay for my gasket set. What a sport!

I am a Toyota expert technician. I agree with a lot of what you’re saying. Maint req light IS ONLY related to oil change interval. If someone says or thinks otherwise, they are the fool. About the check engine, ABS, and trac lights... I have a problem with one aspect of what you said. The ABS and traction control DO NOT turn off just because the lights come on. Those lights only come on to help alert you to the presence of the check engine light. A dealership should never be dumb enough to sell you ABS diag or repairs with this scenario. That being said, service writers are not mechanics and don’t know all that your mechanic knows. Everyone should have a mechanic friend with some real knowledge of systems that can help them keep from being taken advantage of. Good luck all!!

I fixed my abs and brake light issue with changing my abs motor pack with used one and bleed the whole thing . I had abs problems this is just a problem with abs and brake pressure The code I that read when I took to mechanic was not a sensor code it was a motor pack code . It said motor free spins loose nut . Opened pack up and guess what i found exactly what code said . I pass inspections every year.I ve got my factory repair manual with a 5 yr sub with all data that helps with alot working to find the parts easy cause i can get part number and then just find the lowest price on web . Mechanics need to know how to read codes . I went to school for codes and I got a whole ase book that I keep and read to help me be a better mech. Another thing that Scotty didn't mention is change your timing belt every 80,000 miles, especially on cars with Interference Engines which could brake a piston or most likey bent your valves. You will save a lot of 💰 if you do this on time. Also rotate your tires every 7,000 miles at least, your tires will last longer. Also put gas to your car and do not run your car with low in gas. That can damage your gas pump which most cars, mechanics has to take the tank out of the car and labor will be extremely high.

Later I learned that you always have to press the caliper back in when replacing pads and that is completely normal and doesn't require new calipers. That motivated me to learn as much about cars and do as much of my own repairs as I could. ~34 years later I've become a pretty good DIY "mechanic"

When I was a service writer at WalMart, I took charge of the battery department, with a goal of learning everything I could, about batteries. When replacing or prorating, your best proof for battery warranty is your receipt, of course. They may want to put your warranty receipt in a plastic pouch on the battery. DON’T DO THAT. WalMart receipt paper is thermal printing paper, not ink based. Engine compartment heat can make it unreadable! If you have no paperwork, the next thing they will go by, is the shipping date sticker on the battery. If that is missing, you will have to use the manufacture date on the battery. Batteries are often not open dated like food products, so you may need to Google for the code, and you may have trouble getting clueless management to accept your proof.

They make the ink disappear on purpose. I have old receipts from 30 years ago that are still good. Todays suck and go away. Its a conspiracy !

Always find a GOOD mechanic who is honest. There are a bunch of honest mechanics who don't know what they are doing and they think it is one problem but it isn't. And also there are mechanics who screw people over. I am neither of those. I try to teach people about their car like this guy is doing g. That way, whenever they bring it back to me they trust me and they can understand what I am telling them more. And if somebody comes in with an engine light on for an evap leak I ALWAYS check their gas cap and tighten it, then clear the light and tell them if it comes back on then come back and see me and then I'll check it out further. But I ain't ganna charge anybody for a loose gas cap or a bad gas cap. That's just wrong

Another example, I have a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee which had an electrical short causing right rear turn signal to not work. The short was caused by turn signal wires that were set too close to driver's side exhaust header which caused a 'control module' to short out. Chrysler told me a new one with installation was about $800.00 because only "they" could reprogram it. After researching online, I simply purchased a used TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) online for about $100 and I removed the defective one and installed the used one. I then simply turned ignition key to the 'on' power position without starting car for about 12 seconds, turned key off and then started car. Rear turn lights worked perfect including driver's side headlights which were also malfunctioning because of defective power module. Scotty's videos gave me the confidence that I could research and complete certain repair work myself and I no longer 'panic' whenever there is a mechanical issue with my vehicles. Never accept that every repair job has to be done by a "mechanic" or "stealership". You would be amazed by how much you can do yourself...

Had a Suzuki that the the maintenance light came on at regular intervals, I finally found a mechanic that showed me the switch location. I turned it off myself after that. The first time I took it to Suzuki and I waited two hours, they charged me over a hundred and said they couldn’t find a problem so they “reset the light”. My later mechanic figured they just made me wait to make me think they had run all these tests, when in fact they had just reset it. The tell tell sign was the light came on a even mileage….50,000, 80,000, 100,000. My first lesson in don’t trust a dealer. Try this, bought my current Subaru that had a really dim dome light. When I picked it up I mentioned to the service person I was going to replace the bulb with an LED. He told me not to because I’d ruin the transmission. The next time I was in to pick up an ordered part, I asked if a courtesy light went out how could I replace it. Another mechanic said I’d have to bring it into service because the entire console had to be removed. KZbin showed me you just pop out the lens. Had a new Honda Civic, got a recall on the rear suspension. Took it in, lost 8 MPG, they said what they did wouldn’t effect mileage. Called national Honda Service to complain and the girl said I probably didn’t know how to figure mileage. Went back to dealer, called in the service manager and he said the car should only get 30-32 mpg. So I went out got the window sticker out of the glove box, showed him 38 mpg. They took the car back to service and Shazam the car started getting 38-40 again. There isn’t a single dealer in Lexington, KY that in my opinion isn’t a crook. Had a Chevy dealer that ordered all his trucks without bumpers and then put cheap aftermarket ones on, charging OEM prices. They soon rusted out. And the list could go on.

Understand that shops, particularly the "brand ones" are in it to make money, a lot of times at your expense by inflating costs like Scotty says. If you know nothing they will use that against you more often than not. I am a shade-tree mechanic that can do a lot of things but some things I have to take to a shop, like pressure testing an AC system for leaks. I took my car to one of these shops just to find out where the leak was and the sales associate came back telling me that the compressor was leaking refrigerant(which is what I needed to know) but that I needed everything: receiver-dryer, condenser, ect to the tune of 2200 dollars. I mentally called b.s. on that, paid the checkout fee, bought and installed a compressor and receiver-dryer and charged the system for all of 480 dollars. If you don't know and don't have anyone who can help you not get taken, at least get a second or even a third opinion..it might save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
