Hey Scotty, I've got a 1992 Toyota Camry with 248k miles. Between 40-45 mph, the car starts to shake, but at any other speed, its just fine. The engine runs fine, and the transmission shifts smooth. What could be causing this?

Scotty, i have a 2018 Toyota Highlander. When im at a stop, in drive, holding the brakes, my vehicle rpms will drop 100-300 and the car will shudder. It does this multiple times then stops when i start driving and it doesn't happen all the time. What could the issue be?

Hi Scotty! I have a 2006 Mercedes CLS 500. The front left wheel/suspension has made a squeak everytime I brake for about 6 months. Have had brakes done, bearings replaced and Les Schwab check it over twice a month since it first started, yet it still makes the noise. Any ideasm

I had a 2007 HHR Panel that lasted 530K without being rebuilt. I traded it in on a 2011 (last year of production) HHR. It has 228K on the motor and is running fine. I never got this kind of reliability from a Japanese or German car. Much less on any Italian models. HHR's rock!!!

Mine just hit 273k miles today. They need to bring back the HHR with some upgrades including the front end and the cabin leak issue. I love mine and no one understands why. 27 miles to the gallon and I can haul about anything but a bed and lumber

Scotty, I would normally agree with you, but HHRs are amazingly reliable cars, and are very safe in accidents. I beat mine mercilessly for over 120,000 miles (granted I changed the fluids early and often) and the car had 200,000 miles on it when my mom rolled it 5 times after letting her borrow it to run errands. They had to cut her out of the car with the jaws of life and she had nothing but some cuts and bruises. So to the person looking into the HHR, I would buy it, because I would buy another one right now if I could

Glad your mom was ok and yes I love my 2007 HHR now. I Bought it AS IS used for 900 bucks and it had a bad engine and I knew it did but I needed a car and i knew I could save up and order a engine for it over time and saved. The guy that had it before was old and forgot to change the engine oil and ran it low for a long time and it messed the engine up. It still crank and ran but had no power past 40 mph and knocked real bad. I ordered a used engine from car part planet online for $1,300 and used my $1,200 stimulus last year towards it, it had 83,000 miles on it and cost me $1,600 to have it installed and they sent me the the transmission with it for free which is a bonus and cool. So I have a back up transmission at the shop stored and ready when I need if I ever need it. It runs great now. Gets me 420 to 500 miles on a full tank of fuel. I drive it all over the place and only thing it needs now is rotors and brakes. I have that scheduled to be done on the 2nd and then it should stop shaking when on the brakes going down hills he said. He said the rotors are shot and was never changed. The original engine had 128k miles on it before the old man ruined it on low oil. Other than that its in pretty good shape. I love it! Had to replace the battery to as it sat outside a shop for 2 years till I bought it and now giving her all my love in fixes lol.

I have an hhr. Still runs good. 208,000 miles. I met a another owner of an hhr last week his had 300,000. Neither of us have had transmission problems. I have given mine a beating.

Even though it’s the same person that designed the PT Cruiser, the Chevy HHR is more reliable than the Chrysler PT Cruiser.

My HHR trasmission went out at around 60k (It was shifting roughly), luckily it was replaced under a warranty. The issue was a solenoid they could no longer source, not a strictly mechanical problem. I still get that typical front end shimmy under braking though, even after typical maintenance. We have several cargo variants that we use/abuse at work with 200-300k and no major mechanical issues ever, not even the shimmy. Here in 2020, definitely a car to get only if it's dirt cheap. My wife's Civic is 6 years older, three times the odometer mileage, drives much nicer, and still has a KBB of over $1000 more. Only difference is being able to carry 8' boards.

First time I've EVER disagreed with Scotty! I owned a 2006 Chevy HHR LT with Auto transmission and I drove it to 350,000kms with NO problems and I literally drove it down un maintained gravel roads and crossed hood deep water holes hahaha It was AMAZING and I have been trying to find another to replace it as I only sold it cause I got a newer car and it sat for two years in yard started right up no problems sold it for 500$ 👍

We have an 07 we bought new with the 2.4 liter engine, auto and "loaded". We have 247,000 miles on with only a few routine problems. WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! Arguably THE easiest car to get in and out of...bar none. Perfect (adjustable) seat height and VERY narrow sill.

My 2008 Chevy HHR is a GEM! I have 120,000 miles on it since day one. It's easy to drive, gets 29 mph, has plenty of space for suitcases for vacations, solidly built, and can get out of its own way. The bright red color paint looks like new. Thank you to Chevrolet.

I live off the grid out on 20 miles of dirt roads and my 2009 HHR panel car is still running great. A lot of room in the rear when I do PVD delivery for UPS during the holidays, so I'm super pleased with my HHR even after putting 30,000 miles on it in a year.

Okay Scotty now you’ve crossed the line! It isn’t always about value! Maybe a HHR isn’t the most reliable thing but have you ever owned one long term? I had a 2007 LT automatic and it lasted a long time. Not a damn thing wrong with it. Got regular maintenance and drove great distances. That is my favorite car of all time and it was the best damn car I’ve ever had. Not only was it reliable for me, it was sentimental since it got me through a lot of situations and never failed once! It’s not always about value! 😡

149,000 on our 2007 HHR and have had it for 6 years. We've only had to replace the control arms because the bushings wear out which was super simple to do and replace one wheel bearing, other than the normal oil changes, brake pads, etc... Very easy car to work on, especially for a DIY person. Bottom line: One of the most trouble free cars I've ever owned and can't figure out why GM stopped making them. I'd buy another in a heartbeat (except a 2006 because the early ones did have some bugs in them).

I bought my '09 HHR around Christmas of 2019 and it's been bulletproof when it comes to the drivetrain. The main problem I have is the suspension. Seems like no matter what you do it always has a clunk or something annoying going on. If you replace parts and fix the noise you instantly have a new different noise.

HHR is the same thing as a Cobalt. My 2008 Cobalt has 203,000 miles and still going strong. The 2.2 is a bulletproof engine.

Bought a HHR for my daughter to get back and forth to school. She graduated four years ago and is still driving the car. I have to say, that car has been one of least troublesome cars I have ever purchased. So far, we only had to put on tires, brakes and a water pump two years ago. I just replaced the factory battery just last week and it's a 2011 model. It has 120,000 miles and still drives great.

Take it from a previous HHR owner -- don't even consider buying one. I picked up a 2010 HHR in 2013. It had just over 45k miles. I had to replace the headlight lamps and tail light lamps multiple times during the ownership of the car. I wouldn't mention this if it wasn't somewhere in the neighborhood of once or twice within a single year. The rear tail lights weren't an issue. The headlamps are a real pain to replace as you either have to remove the front bumper cover or pull back the fender well matting. I could have probably made life easier on myself by removing the front tire, but I didn't. It got so bad that I carried an extra set around just to be prepared to replace them when they went out. Also, the build quality of these cars is horrible. Everything inside is made of plastic and thus becomes easily broken. This includes the door handles. The other thing to keep in mind is you want to make sure that all service bulletins have been serviced. Remember, this car was part of the famous issue where the weight of the keychain could cause the keys to either fall out of the ignition or cause the ignition switch to turn to the off position during operation. Make absolutely sure this was fixed with the one you are considering as you don't want the vehicle to shut off while going down the highway. Now, mechanically most of the time the car was fine. However, I was driving home during the summer one year when the entire bottom of the radiator blew out. The seam at the bottom of the radiator split and dropped all of the coolant onto the roadway. It cost me quite a bit to get the radiator replaced. The mechanic that worked on mine said he had seen at least 5 or 6 HHRs do that.

This is crazy. My 2008 HHR has 312k on it. Original engine and transmission. Only fix I ever had to do was to change the timing chain at 294k. Inside not even one creak or squeak. Original tyranny is perfect. Suspension still great, no noises. Best car I've ever owned. I've talked to others with the same experience in their HHR. The 2.2 and 2.4 Ecotec engines are long lasting engines. The 4t40 and 4T45 automatic transaxles are actually pretty good overall and can last for years with proper maintenance. Thus Scotty strikes out again with incorrect advice. Now for the real advice. Stay away from pre 2008 HHR's as they had known brake issues and stick with the newer ones.

The HHR is very reliable. We have one we use as a delivery truck. It has a trailer hitch and we tow trailers weighing between 700-2000 pounds, sometimes traveling 100 miles at a time with the trailers. It has the manual transmission, 230,000 miles and still runs strong. Clutch replaced at 210,000. regular services and it's still out there. We like it so much, we would buy another without question if we found one which was well cared for and the price was right. Great car that is cheap to maintain and when something does break, parts are cheap and readily available.

I'm going to disagree with you on the HHR. One of my brothers has one with 210K miles, and my youngest son has one with 168K miles. Both automatics. All they've had to do was replace the catalytic converter and O2 sensors, and my son had me replace his front wheel bearings and heater blower motor. Both drive like new and the air conditioner blows cold. Twelve years with only a couple hundred bucks in repairs sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Never buy a Chevy HHR. The company I work for bought some as company cars, you cannot see out of these vehicles. The windshield where it meets the roof is so low, it’s like having your visor down all day. You can’t see traffic lights, you can’t see Street signs, you don’t have much time to read signs on the interstate. Not only that, the seat backs do not adjust in the slightly reclined to slightly upright position. There’s no adjustment. The fleet of cars we had was a terrible choice, because we did not drive from point a to point B without having to search for an address. If you’re just driving from home to the grocery store and you don’t need to read signs, maybe it will be fine. But if you have to use this vehicle as a delivery vehicle forget it. You will constantly be hunched over the steering wheel trying to see

I love my HHR. lol 2006, 142.000 miles, automatic, runs like a top. Have owned for years and have only done regular oil changes, plugs etc. I've heard both sides on these cars. I don't know if I got lucky or what, but I'll drive it until the bitter end.

I just bought a used one for $2000 yesterday. Its a dark grey with wll blacl wheels. The inside is completely clean and gorgeous. It actually drives so smooth sometimes i have to make sure it's still running. Lol. The guy was only selling it because he bought a newer one and didnt want to pay the insurance on this one. He said he has never had a better car. Go figure.

I bought a used 2008 HHR in 2010 with about 30,000 miles on it 2.2 liter auto trans. Drove it to 200,000 . Zero problems with it and sold it in 2015. I am currently keeping my eyes and ears open for a low mile HHR that I will pay good money for a good one. One of the best cars I have owned in my 70 plus years. Crown Vics were/are the best

Honestly, if I don’t buy it, I imagine I could drive my Scion until the wheels literally fall off (which would be my fault… 95% of what I’ve fixed was my fault or legit wear). I know for sure that the buyer has replaced the clutch; which means somebody was likely f’ng around. Would you recommend this car? I’m assuming and prepared to do some regular maintenance, and a small amount of repair off the jump. It would be a long term vehicle, as my days of car hopping ended in my teens. Thanksin advance for replying.

I found an HHR with 190k miles on it for my parents. They paid less than a grand, and it gets 37mpg on the highway with the way they drive it. Great little car with retro love or hate design. Inner door handles do break often though.

I am a retired GM transmission technician- GM had serious reliability/durability issues with many different units in the years I worked on them, but I might call that the most dependable of the lot. He says the HHR'S transmission is garbage. Wrong. The only automatic transmission the HHR ever had was the 4t40. One of the best if not THE best automatic transmissions that GM ever built. I am a 43 year gm tech specializing in transmission repair. This is how I know this. They have a pretty good engine too. The rest of the car is cheaply made but easily repairable. Most parts are readily available due to many parts being the same as parts from a Cobalt.

Mike Ericks had a 2006 hhr last till 198k then it got totaled. Also its not a pt cruiser rip off remember the sports truck with the bullet nose gm made for a redic price. Bullet nose cars were a thing at ine point. Thankfully now they are not, however i do miss my hhr just not the auto window button placement

Hhrs are deff reliable in my opinion i enjoyed mine anyway, i think the most expensive fix on mine was a bearing went but at 198k i cant complain

I love my 2007 HHR now. I Bought it AS IS used for 900 bucks and it had a bad engine and I knew it did but I needed a car and i knew I could save up and order a engine for it over time and saved. The guy that had it before was old and forgot to change the engine oil and ran it low for a long time and it messed the engine up. It still crank and ran but had no power past 40 mph and knocked real bad. I ordered a used engine from car part planet online for $1,300 and used my $1,200 stimulus last year towards it, it had 83,000 miles on it and cost me $1,600 to have it installed and they sent me the the transmission with it for free which is a bonus and cool. So I have a back up transmission at the shop stored and ready when I need if I ever need it. It runs great now. Gets me 420 to 500 miles on a full tank of fuel. I drive it all over the place and only thing it needs now is rotors and brakes. I have that scheduled to be done on the 2nd and then it should stop shaking when on the brakes going down hills he said. He said the rotors are shot and was never changed. The original engine had 128k miles on it before the old man ruined it on low oil. Other than that its in pretty good shape. I love it! Had to replace the battery to as it sat outside a shop for 2 years till I bought it and now giving her all my love in fixes lol.

I have an HHR with a manual transmission. I don't have that many miles on it, but the only problems I have had are one front wheel hub and the speakers quit working. Other than that, I have only had to do brakes and basic maintenance (oil, filters, wipers etc). I love my manual HHR with 2 young children and a dog.

Well I bought one for 900 bucks that needed a engine replaced. I ordered a engine for $1,300 with only 83k on it. Cost me $1,600 to have a local mechanic take out the old engine and install this used one. Its been running good so far. The trans is good and car parts planet where I ordered the used engine from comes with a 5 year unlimted warranty on its engine. They sent the trans with it as well which was cool but not needed. Extra parts in case old trans goes out.
