Scotty I have to say most of the time you’re spot on.. This time you’re wrong. A garage allows your car to dry out. That doesn’t happen outside in the winter. BTW the road salt stays liquid down to 20 degrees.. So unless you live where it stays really cold all the time your car outside will experience many freeze and thaws. I’ve garaged cars for years and it definitely helps the body last longer.

When we lived in Michigan my late husband would wax everything! In the fall he would get underneath our car and take the cheapest wax you could find to undercoat the car around the wheel wells plus the metal in the engine that was showing. You would open up the engine compartment then wax anything that was metal. He had a set of paint pens but none of the matched our car so we had stripes of paint in the scratches and it got to be looking like it tiger on steroids. I have to say we never had any rust

it has nothing to do with the water, only the oxygen and conductivity. The seal is an electrical insulator. No matter how perfectly you apply it, you're going to have differential expansion; even if it doesnt crack from the same side being pointed at the sun every day, or a rock, whatever....its going to bubble out somewhere because of the electrical difference between the body and the surrounding environment. That device is meant to give electrons so they dont come out of the steel, this could also be done with a sacrificial anode made of a metal that gives electrons more readily than the steel but has the same problem because the car sits in a gas not a liquid or a solid where the conductivity is more uniform. Aluminum would be great for that but it builds a patina quickly and stops conducting. Another solution could be turning the iron oxide into a more durable polymer so it insulates but doesnt flake off so easy. But if you invent it, it will be suppressed

I live in northern Minnesota, and I am 100% convinced that the people who have decided to drench our roads with brine are getting a kick-back from the seller of the brine. Ten years ago they only used salt sparingly at intersections and if there was freezing rain. Now they use it even when there is no snow in the forecast. They simply put it down every few days no matter what. It ruins our roads (some city roads have been turned into gravel and pieces of concrete) and our cars, and it even gets in the interior where it turns into a crusty cake on the car's carpet. What a scam! And like you said, Scotty, it still eventually freezes when it does get cold enough (-10F) which is very common up here in the winter. All they are doing is transferring icy roads at 20F to icy roads at below zero F. It does not make any sense, so someone must be getting money to do this. That is my opinion.
@ronaldkulas57485 жыл бұрын
@573F4N X13 Thanks for your reply. There is little doubt in my mind that someone is making a lot of money off the brine. I was told by a fairly high-level city employee that the city buses are being ruined by this crap. So the question is: Why do they keep using it? There is only one answer: Corruption spelled "money".

Brzeczyszczykiewicz The Gulf is saltier, and everything wakes up wet every morning. The roofs rot, condensation inside the body rusts it, the seam along the leading edge of your hood.... In UK we have a product called Lanoguard that is very easy to spray on the underside of vehicles. Apparently it contains lanolin (found in sheeps wool and it smells like it too!) that goes through the rust and clings to the bare metal. Here in Toronto, Canada, we have at least two companies that specialize in car body rust prevention. These are 'RustCheck' and 'Krown'. Both are petroleum based products that are applied annually for a cost of about $100. These coatings are said to repel water and they 'creep' i.e. after application they creep and expand coverage into all the nook and cranies that may have been missed. I have been using them for the last thirty years on all my cars and there is no rust on any of them. My mechanic reports that on a recent muffler repair he was able to remove the bolts with a simple wrench as opposed to having to cut them off with a torch (the usual way to remove rusted parts) because the annual Krown spray application prevented any rust for all those years the car was driven on salty roads.

I'm going to rinse it well, inside and outside the frame, take it for a drive to blow out most of the water, let it dry for a few days, and then coat the frame and suspension and inside the body panels with Fluid Film annually to prevent corrosion. Rinse with cold water. Hot water sprayed on salt is much more corrosive.

I had a collector car in my garage for a long time. My cars were outside (snow belt state) for all of their long lives. They still rusted (brake lines, etc) and the upper panels paint dulled and the clearcoat peeled. I waxed them but it didn't last. Now my car is in the garage and at 9 yrs old looks new and the paint still beads water with a yearly wax job. I agree about the warmer garage and melting slush will cause faster oxidation, so you could leave it out until it is washed or dries out. Dried salt on the car won't cause corrosion as it needs water to do damage. I do love the car in the garage in hot or cold weather and not cleaning off snow and ice is a big win. Easier to blow snow too.

We have a heated garage in MinneSnowta, usually at 45F. The snow and ice melt off, hit the floor and that's that. We don't have cars that start out rusty and wash them periodically. I will say that the concrete of the floor is no longer glossy and sealed in the tire wipes, so the salt did its harm there. We also use a less corrosive salt in MN, and it is less effective on the ice at colder temps. So what you (Scotty) say about salt is likely true for sodium chloride, it is less true for calcium and magnesium chloride salts used here.
@RealDarkFilm5 жыл бұрын
Yeah but parts of the car where water pools stays there, it can't fall and hit the floor because it has pooled...
