Its actually my turn to say that im studying in this field and more precisely its for controlling the pressure in the seperation and refinement of (mostly gas, oil and water). When separating gas from the oil and water its supposed to have a certain ammount of pressure. If it goes above the certain pressure limit a valve opens and sends the gas to that flame tower to keep the pressure on the intended level.
@benbooker58378 ай бұрын
Actually wrong again. Well it depends. At a plant a flare is used to burn off waste product after refinement. also, natural gases like methane are extremely greenhouse sensitive gasses due to their chemical structure that allows higher heat absorption tolerances. Letting it accumulate in the air is far worse, nearly 80 times the effects of CO2 in same volume. So the burn though useful for avoiding gas explosions, also has a secondary very important function especially in recent times.

Depends on the type of platform. On a drilling rig, the flare would be used in during a well kick to relieve pressure coming topside and during a well test given there's nowhere to put the gas. On a production platform it's for the event where they need to depressurise the platform in an emergency. The flare stops an explosive gas cloud forming around the platform and is also a lot nicer for the environment than just releasing gas. Most gas is either exported or used to generate power on board. Some really old platforms will burn everything but that's not very common any more, at least around europe. Most newer facilities don't have a flare lit all the time and will capture and export all gas but they will normally have a flare which is automatically started if there's an emergency where the plant needs to depressurise

As oil is extracted up the well pressure decreases and gas comes out of solution. Flaring still happens but most western oil operations try and capture as much natural gas as possible. When the oil is sent to a 3 phase separator there might be some flare off the high pressure separator but it only vents whatever cannot be captured. Flaring is much more common in countries that produce a lot more low API oil like Saudi Arabia.

So fun fact. Offshore oil platforms in the GOM can only flare for so many hours a month before needing a waiver from the government. Another fun fact is that a good portion of equipment with engines on production platforms run on natural gas straight out of the ground. There are pieces of equipment that do run on diesel but it’s majority back up equipment and cranes for production platforms. Another fun fact is that Oil and Gas companies are working on ways to reduce the amount of gas released off of platforms in new carbon capture efforts. Something else many people don’t know is that there are multiple different areas of the Oil and Gas industry and not every platform you see is a Rig or Drilling Rig. In actually most of them are production platforms or unmanned facilities and wells. Drilling Rigs drill the wells and production crews come in and produce the wells that were drilled.

Ive been guy throwing the object to start the flare. They have an igniter but sometimes it goes bad- Take a safety glove, wrap it around a filled water bottle, and soak the glove in acetone. A couple corrections- the gas doesn’t get pumped out, it flows out naturally thanks to gravity and pressure. Flaring is a way to get the gas away from the equipment and burn it in a controlled manner when you can’t safely capture it, but the goal is usually to send it down a pipeline and sell it to make electricity or heat homes. But there are some times where it is safer, cleaner and more practical to burn it off, such as when starting up a well, or blowing down a piece of equipment, or when drilling the well before production infrastructure is in place. Flaring doesn’t prevent a blowout. Controlling the pressures in the well prevents a blowout.
