Such fights last several days atleast if they go all out. Hes still an Admiral who didnt even go all out or fight seriously during Marineford (if Admirals are serious it goes like Ounk Hazard) and who still was the main reason why Whitebeard died and who WB strongest attack didnt affect that much considered he could still kick ass afterwards. You see, by the time whitebeard climbed into his prime and formed a crew, roger already fallen from his prime because of his sickness. Roger suffered from this unknown illness for many years and tried many doctors. They finally recruited crocus as the ship doctor just to prolong roger's journey because roger wanted to find the laugh tale island. Everyone knew that roger's death was eminent and he used to cough blood regularly at that point. Now, you can re-read the manga again, especially the oden flashback + chapter 956&957. You will see that all of roger's great deeds were done when roger was in his 30s. He went to the last island of the new world "load star" 39 years ago, it was even before the rocks was defeated. He defeated rocks 39 years ago shortly after on god valley. After that, roger was just travelling and searching for the road ponyglyphs and a person who can read those. He didn't do anything else in this time-frame. On the other hand, 39 years ago, whitebeard didn't even have a crew and was a pirate under rocks. It took 5+ years for whitebeard to form a crew after that and basically all of them were kids. So, as you can see, roger was already the greatest pirate in the world after defeating rocks before whitebeard even became a captain and formed a crew. But after that roger got sick and slowly fell from his prime and on the opposite side, whitebeard was rising his power and getting to his prime. At one point whitebeard surpassed (?) roger and got the title "the strongest man" in the world. Roger was like luffy. He got very strong at a very young age like luffy. But in his 30s he lost his prime strength because of illness which is also probably same with luffy. Luffy also probably will not be in his prime in his 40s because of all his gear that reduces his lifespan. Whitebeard was a late-comer and by the time he got to his prime, roger already fell from the prime. But even though roger lost his prime strength many years ago and barely lived, he fought prime whitebeard equally in chapter 966. But even if you analyze their last fight from chapter 966, you can look at their clash and you will notice that while whitebeard was clearly a bigger person in size, yet he jumped into the air and pushed roger down with the help of gravity. On the other hand roger pushed whitebeard upwords, so roger also had to carry all of whitebeard's weight and had to work against the gravity. Yet, they seemed equal in that fight. So, I would give props to roger here. As you can see, non-prime roger nearly equal to prime whitebeard. I were to measure them in numerical strength then I would say, in his 30s (prime), roger had a strength of 100 and then slowly fell to 90 in his 40s. On the other hand, in his prime, whitebeard had a strength of 80 and in his 40s (prime), whitebeard had a strength of 95.5 - 96. Keep in mind that, roger didn't have any devil fruit afawk, he used only haki like garp, rayleigh and shank. But whitebeard had the strongest devil fruit in the world. Even after this, sick roger was equal to this whitebeard. I believe, we will see prime roger during roger flashback. Remember that, this was oden's flashback, not roger's. Oda definitely saved the best roger moments for roger flashbacks. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. That was a long comment. I hope I explained it enough. Roger died at 53 year old if memory serves me right. Is the story going to be that long in op time? Because luffy is a teenager, so the journey to become Pirate King would have to take another 35 years for luffy to be age-stress wise comparable to Roger. So I don't see it happening, unless we either get a 30 year timeskip, or Oda beats the record for human livespan, and writes the story for the next 200 years.

As well as sacrifices he made during the time we was with Ivankov. It is still unclear actually how many years he lost in total and if his current power ups are still draining him of that. However Oda has made it very clear that Luffy has sacrifice alot to make it to the position he is now. It actually would be a epic end if Luffy does decide to take the route of being to give up his life to save the world so to speak. Have to see where Oda wants to take it

So I just thought about something I figured i'd bring to your attention. When Shanks visits the five elders and they mentions- "we only let this meeting happen because it's you". I am considering the possibility that he was able to meet them simply due to the fact that he stopped Kaido from coming to marineford. I think the fan-base is being mislead as to the intentions he harbored while meeting them. Obviously it seems sketchy, he's hooded, etc.. However I think he was using this leverage to get the world government on blackbeards ass. He already warned whitebeard (A YONKO) who is now dead. So he has no other ally as a world power to take on another yonko. If we consider luffy's position in the world at the time, this becomes more clear. Oda mentioned that shanks will move in 2021. So does that mean he comes back for luffy in wano and recognizes how great of a pirate he is? By seeing all of his supporters, crew members, STRENGTH, and possibly the grand fleet? Perhaps shanks comes to wano and finally recognizes him as a contender for the pirate king title. Furthermore, joining forces with luffy to indulge in a 2v2 emperor confrontation. And maybe perhaps this is how the marines get involved with wano.

It's because they've mastered techniques which compensate for their lack of physicality or are able to bridge the gap between them and other DF users, especially Logia's. Rayleigh clearly displayed in his training flashbacks with Luffy that brute strength alone is not enough, if you can't hit your opponent because they've got future sight, can't damage them because they've coated themselves in Haki, and every hit you take is a critical hit because they can use advanced armament haki or Ryou the fight is going to be over extremely quickly and no amount of extra power is going to help.

I always classified them (Garp, Roger, Whitebeard, Sengoku, Rayleigh, Tsuru?) as "legends", as in they're probably far from their prime but if they could tap into their younger selves even if only for a few moments, only the likes of Shanks, Mihawk, BM or Kaido could deal with them. Basically only the "new" legends could deal with the old ones.

Guys get this to the top Brago needs to see this... This is completely unrelated to his video about old characters this is a blackbeard theory. I say theory but it's more just pure fact. In episode 146, Luffy meets blackbeard in the pub they both eat pie Luffy says its really bad whilst Blackbeard says its really good. They then drink beer and Luffy says wow the drinks sure are good, whilst blackbeard says the drinks today are horrible. The key here is blackbeard saying the drinks are horrible. Now in the next episode 147 after Luffy and Zoro take a beating Blackbeard gives his speech about dreams then Nami Luffy and Zoro walk off with Luffy and Zoro claiming Blackbeard is not he but they, directly after this comment it focuses on Blackbeard walking off drinking the same beer saying "The drinks sure taste good today" I'm not sure if this key detail has been pointed out already but I personally have not seen it being mentioned before. This scene is clearly telling us that one moment Blackbeard hated the drink and the very next moment he loves the drink, directly after Zoro and Luffy tell us the viewer that it is not he but rather "them". This is an easy to miss detail but the intention is very clear in hindsight. If you rewatch the two episodes you can see a cleeeeear juxtaposition between the portrayal of Blackbeard from episode 146 to 147. Luffy is an incredible judge of character the blackbear persona he met initially was the let's say pirate novice, a man that is aware of the sky island and new era and dreams living on should not be so surprised at a 30mil bounty, the way they interact blackbeard almost gives me Usopp vibes the whole act tough persona until shit gets real. Now in the next episode 147 Luffy is starring intently at Blackbeard but why, because he has noticed the complete change in this person. Even the speech that Blackbeard gives, he encourages Luffy to chase his dream to see the sky island almost as if its something he's already experienced. I could go on forever about the small details but the main point is how he hated the beer one moment then sudden loved the beer directly after Luffy and Zoro say its not he but them or they. Blackbeard undoubtedly has Xebecs soul residing in him, the only character that makes sense to give a speech like that is Xebec

Yes I think Garp could kill Akainu back at Marineford. WB would've bodied Akainu if he wasn't sick, and Garp was comparable to Roger and WB in his prime... age is a factor IRL, less so in One Piece. And like sacramento60 said, Garp was saying "they don't fly half as fast as they used to" was in the context of throwing them at Luffy... or do you think he was going all out?
