I'm quite sure Mihawk knows Shank's strength as he is able to read people easily. It's his own individual honor that would not allow him to fight a "one-armed man". They have mutual respect for each other and neither is afraid to fight the other but Mihawk lives by a swordsman's code and though Shanks is obviously a swordsman he does not live by the same code. (My thoughts) I believe them to be equal currently. Mihawk being a superior swordsman and CoO user and Shanks having extreme haki applied to his attacks to combat Mihawks powerful slashes. Though Mihawk can do the same to make his slashes more fearsome than we've seen.

Let's be honest here. 1. People don't want Mihawk to be stronger than Shanks because it would mean Zoro would be only slightly behind Luffy at the end of story. 2. Mihawk saying "your path will be tougher than beating me"(or something like that) to Luffy doesn't have anything to do with a debate between Mihawk and Shanks. Becoming the pirate king means you have to travel around the world, find the poneglyphs, have the ability to read them, fight strong pirates, go against the world government, etc. While to become the world's strongest swordsman you have to improve your skills and fight stronger swordsmen. So of course becoming the pirate king will be harder than becoming the strongest swordsman. 3. IF Shanks has the best haki in the verse like people claim he does, why doesn't he have a black blade? Doesn't a black blade have more to do with haki than with skill? 4. At least Mihawk vs Shanks makes sense. Don't compare this genuine debate with stupid Sanji vs Zoro debates. That has no substance. Zoro was always shown to be stronger than Sanji. IF anything he is always shown to be closer to Luffy than to Sanji.

the truth of the matter is we can not say for sure who is stronger out of mihawk and shanks cause they are both relatively featless. We can only go by portrayal. The main argument for mihawk is that he is the "worlds greatest swordsman" and since shanks also uses a sword logic would suggest that mihawk is stronger then shanks. Other then that, everything else goes in shank's favour. Shanks is a yonko which is stated to be the top tiers of the verse while Mihawk is a shichibukai and dont bring up the argument of "well mihawk would also be a yonko if he had a army" cause yall really be using the position argument of "zoro is a supernova while sanji is not" without batting an eye. Shanks also has better "offscreen" feats in stopping Kaido from going to marineford, clashing with Whitebeard, showing the best conquerors haki feat we have seen in the show, demanding respect from gorosei and sengoku during the war. From what weve gotten from the story so far, its safe to say we put Shanks > mihawk for now until something in the series shows or suggests otherwise.

Sanji was only 23 million away from 100 million. 33 from killer's bounty, realistically most crews only had 1 supernova, you can't be really giving luffy 3 supernova, at that point, it throws off the balance. he was basically a supernova. If Mihawk had a crew he would be a yonko. We don't know how shanks stopped kaido from going to marineford. we know kaido loves alcohol, could of given him that. conquerers haki does NOTHING in actual fights, so that doesn't matter. Shanks sacrificing his arm tells me that he doesn't desire to become the pirate king or the WSS, I don't think his goal is solely to do with strength itself, but a certain amount of strength is still required . He can afford to make the moves his made because he has such a powerful crew on top of himself already being so strong, I don't think him by himself would be as strong as people think. The manga tells us that Big mom AND Kaido forming an alliances would be the most dangerous crew, this is due to an alliance. Shanks has political power due to his territory and crew, but I don't think his portrayal has just been individually, whereas mihawks has. Also we already have been told Mihawk can discern strength by EYE, he's also called hawkeye for a reason I believe. Mihawk calls him a one armed has-been when shanks thinks mihawk wants to challenge him, he's not interested in shanks anymore. He's more intrigued by the future generation. Agree to an extent, shanks doesn’t want to be the world strongest swordsman and neither do most of the top tiers. But the discerning eye is inconsistent to say the least. He was not able to discern WB strength at marineford and he was fine with completely leaving the War when shanks had arrived. That statement of calling shanks a has been seemed way more like rival talk than actual fact. That’s like Zoro and Sanji talking to each other. Not to mention that Shanks was completely ready to fight Mihawk despite being drunk. I think their power levels are ambiguous and meant to be open ended.

Nah, I do believe it will be resolved. Mihawk's strength/title is tied directly to a strawhat's dream. So I don't believe for a second that he will leave it ambiguous/open to interpretation. Zoro obtains the WSS title and you think we're going to still be asking things like "But is he stronger than Shanks/Big Mom/Law/Fujitora?". In order for Zoro to be the WSS and for his "name to reach the heavens", I don't see Oda undermining his dream/title by leaving it as such an ambiguous toss up.

I honestly don’t think it should be a debate. The author gave us a title and it’s a title that is the goal of our second main character of the story. If there’s a swordsman stronger than Mihawk, then it ruins Zoro’s character. People try to call it greatest instead of strongest even though there are more instances of it being strongest swordsman instead of greatest, in which the translator said Oda doesn’t see a difference they’re both one in the same thing. The kanji is specifically for power and skill has never been emphasized for Mihawk or Zoro, it’s always about feats of cutting power. Then there are arguments about better haki when the key to having a black blade is haki, it has been told to us and there are two characters in the story with a black blade(forged through haki and battles). People say well Mihawk isn’t doing anything and Shanks became a yonko after their rivalry. Mihawk told Zoro he will stay on top of the world until he’s ready. People use Mihawk calling Shanks a washed up hasbeen and not fighting him at Marineford as a means to slander Mihawk and call him a fraud. If he is a character that is seeking powerful people, swordsman that can defeat him why would he run from anybody? Even Oda has said he is seeking someone stronger than Shanks to face him. That doesn’t down play Shanks that’s just a testament to how strong Mihawk is. It’s so odd that people don’t use the worlds strongest swordsman as a benchmark but other characters that use swords 😐. Oda said he is the strongest swordsman in name AND actuality. When it’s other characters with world class titles we don’t hesitate to respect them but when it comes to this man or any swordsman in the story(unless you’re a yonko) we take things with a grain of salt. Also about this whole thing about swordsmen vs people that just use a sword. This is a fan made distinction, if Oda cared about that he would have made it clear. If you are a character that needs to use a sword when they are fighting seriously you count, devil fruit or not. We’ve seen it time and time again. There is also a misconception that because Shanks is tied to Luffy’s character that would make Shanks more important than Mihawk as a character and a fighter. People haven’t realized Shanks is Luffy’s inspiration, not his goal, Mihawk is Zoro’s goal. Matter of perception tbh I view "World's" titles as in-world titles used by Big News to influence OP. Not saying they aren't based in some truth, but how did Shanks and Mihawk ring throughout the world? I think that it wasn't a clash of swords that rang, but rather Big News pushing and hyping the two. That's how Mihawk got the title, that's why the battles rang, it was all Big News. @Marcus Angstadt I actually disagree because I don’t believe anything would’ve stopped Kaido from going to marineford other than a fight, I think it was a clash of warships which shanks got the better of. If it came down to a 1v1 I think shanks would win 4/10 times while Kaido 6/10. The yonko are mostly even with everything fight being extremely difficult. That plus the stronger crew advantage by shanks gave him better odds. However sending Kaido packing then heading for the marineford unscathed is definitely a great feat. Shanks is one of the hardest characters to scale.

He holds the title so there is no reason for him to seek out WB even if WB is stronger than him. Also Big mom and WB can be considered swordsman. But you are definitely right in saying that he specifically is seeking top tier swordsman. Most of the current top tiers don’t use swords and none of them care about Mihawks title. Pirate King is a far greater title than the worlds strongest swordsman. Shanks v Mihawk isn’t something that either characters care about anymore. Shanks wouldn’t fight Mihawk without a reason anymore and Mihawk doesn’t want to fight a “weakened” shanks.

The thing about who you like more will be stronger is not the case. Unlike 2 years or so the mihawk>shanks has certainly risen. I Am a shanks fan. Everytime he comes on screen my mind goes crazy, same with many people but in the last 2 years videos came from Drizzt, Fiji etc.. Which swayed the strength argument in mihawk's favour. Mihawk is not in my top 5 or 10(for now) shanks is my favourite non straw hat. Many people who think Mihawk is stronger like shanks as a character more. Many people now believe that mihawk is stronger is because it's the simplest answer. For shanks to be stronger than mihawk(which is possible) we have to go into headcannon territory about haki beams, conquerors shield and all the crazy things. So people changed sides. Even I believed shanks was stronger. I had no respect for swordsman. But then I saw Fiji's or drizzt's video . Then I really thought that this made sense because I've only seen shanks drawing a sword even if u want to bring in the pure swordsman arguments, shanks like big mom isn't a DF user(till now don't know if he ate one after the flashback)and haki works in conjunction with the sword. My opinion, which is personal, is that we should separate "swordsmanship" from "overall strength". Whitebeard used a bladed weapon and had "the world's strongest man" title: so was he the best swordman? No, he had other means to win other than his blade. Big mom uses a sword, and even have named attacks with it: can we really consider her a swordman? I don't think so, moreover I think she didn't even had napoleon by the time she had her first bounty. Zoro will be the best swordman: does that mean he'll be stronger than luffy? I don't think either. Swordsmanship is more of a philosophy, I think. Mihawk is the strongest in that regard: his skill with the blade are unsurpassed. Does that mean he's the strongest overall? I don't think so. If I'm the best cod player, does that automatically means I'm the strongest player of every videogame ever? No it doesn't. This is the same thing. I think.

They had duels over 12 years ago. Since then Shanks became a Yonko, clashed with Whitebeard (Yonko and 'Worlds Strongest Man') and split the heaven, somehow sent Kaido (Yonko and 'Worlds Strongest Creature') back (and probably defeated him too since he's lost 7 times and been captured 18 times to Yonko and the Marine, as mentioned by Brago), stopped Akainu's (Fleet Admiral) attack, challenged everyone at Marineford (Admirals, 7 Warlords (including Mihawk)), Blackbeard and his crew, Garp, Sengoku, all the other marines and pirates) to fight him instead, became stronger despite losing an arm. Mihawk, on the other hand has been waiting for someone stronger than Shanks so practically fought no one for at least 12 years who poses a challenge, clashed equally with Vista (5th commander), tried to measure the distance to 'that man' (Whitebeard (who clashed with Shanks)) but got his slash blocked by Jozu (3rd commander) and has been sitting around with Baboons and Perona for the last 12 or so years. You honestly believe Oda made: One Yonko being a half giant freak of nature, capable of beating giants at the age of 4, with a huge arsenal of physical attacks, sword attacks, stealing souls, lighting attacks, fire attacks and more. One Yonko of some ancient race, immortal, capable of turning into a huge dragon that can blow cities up with his breath and control weather and more. One Yonko with an exceptional body that withholds 2 devil fruits, one considered being the most destructive devil fruit there is and the other being the ultimate debuffing fruit that cancels his opponent's' abilities. And then one poor disabled boy that can do nothing more than swinging his sword? You guys are tripping... Everyone says Shanks is the weakest yonko. Why do you come to that conclusion? Because of bounty numbers? We all know bounties don't equate to power or strenghth and I think this is especially true for a peace loving pacifist such as shanks over rampaging monsters that want to terriize the sea and cause global conflict. Shanks has the potentual to be even more powerful then the "monsters" that rampage the new world. So people stop saying he is the weakest yonko all because of his lower bounty and the fact that he was a yonko for a short time. None of this means shit. in fact shanks entire origins and legacy behind who he really is has NOTHING to do with his yonko status. Look at Marine vice admiral garp as an example of that. His rank is vice admiral but he is probably more equilivent to a yonko in terms of sheer power.

Yeah you know Drizzt made a good point, I think Oda will not make brutes like big mom and Kaido be stronger than actual well rounded fighters such as Akainu, Shanks, Mihawk, Aokiji and maybe Dragon. Even now the counter to Kaido is a technique of Advanced armament not just getting buff and muscled up.

I like Shanks as a character more. With that said i'd say Mihawk is probably stronger. After Shanks lost his arm Mihawk didnt seem interested in fighting him anymore. It was stated by the Gorosi that Shanks has the strongest (well rounded) crew. 1 for 1 i dont think Shanks can beat Big Mom or Kiado. I'm not saying Mihawk can but again Shanks is literally missing an arm.

The REAL REASON is because Oda wants to end the story in 5 years. It's clear he's going to rush things, like he already has a bit in wano. Don't expect many anticipated fights. At most we might get clashes, but it's clear Oda cares more about resolving the story, and that's OK! One Piece has always been great for it's story anyways
