As a petite romantic I hate oversized clothes with each and every cells in my body. I love it on other people and admire people who can pull off this style but on me it doesn't suit me at all. I look like I have gained 10 pounds. More than everything I hate the fact that in store they only sell long and oversized clothes. I agree with you, skinny or sleek pants will never disappear because first they became basics and secondly they are very practical. Who wants long and large pants falling on the ground catching the dust, the water, etc. Finally, they do not hide shoes!

Agree as a TR, I literally have cried it's so frustrating to find clothes right now. I recently bought a hand-made jacket online & gave them my measurements & it still is oversized. Now I have to take my $300 jacket to a tailor for MAJOR revisions (sleeve, waist, total length, collar size, and shoulder all need to be made smaller). I cant even find clothes on Etsy that are tailored for curve.

I'm also a SD - I feel like I can get away with one oversized item if the rest of the outfit it fitted and if the oversized item is somewhat 'elegant' in style rather than slouchy. This current trend for oversized on the top and bottom looks terrible on me though. I think the point about looking for fitted wrists is good, I've always felt bat wing sleeves suit me well which is kind of an oversized look. Also long cardi's worn open with a fitted top or dress underneath.

I'm flamboyant natural, and I definitely agree oversized clothes are a must in my wardrobe. What I use as day to day guideline for oversized clothing is slim-wide; like either the top is oversized and the pants are slim, or the pants are wide and the top is slim. Like I love to wear a short haltertop with cargo pants, or a very large t-shirt or a oversized hoodie with skinny jeans (or a skirt or cut off mini shorts), generally combined with my combat boots or high top sneakers. Or one of my favorite summer outfits is a long, wide, flowy skirt, with a wide belt, and a cute cropped top. It usually works well for the vertical line. Also I get a lot of my oversized tops from the men's section, a lot of men's clothes have lines that fits FN very well, and sometimes better than women's clothing.
@silynita

This explains why men's clothing looks good on me. Also why do the men's clothes looks more high quality than women's clothes in the same price range?

Mmmhmmm. Probably 80% of my wardrobe (also an FN) is menswear. Even my sweats are from the men’s department. I never buy women’s t-shirts. I find even the button up tops I do buy in the women’s department are “boyfriend” cut. Basically, I need a lot of long rectangles that I can size up or down depending on the drape I want it to have and that’s all but a mission impossible in the women’s department 😂.

I’m a very slim soft dramatic (think Ava Gardner) and I can pull off a chic edgy aesthetic with oversized coats very well as long as the proportions aren’t too exaggerated. Think medium-chunky boots, high-waisted skinny jeans/leggings or high-waisted straight-leg pants, a decently fitted top and an oversized coat cinched in at the waist with a belt or worn open if without. It’s one of my most flattering everyday looks and can be dressed up or down by swapping out different pieces and materials.

I would like to add that you don’t necessarily have to wear oversized clothes to be in this oversize trend. Oversize can translate through details and accessories. For example: it could be oversized pockets, collars or sleeves; oversized prints; buttons could be larger than normal; it could be a handbag that gives oversize feeling (large and maybe a bit soft/slouchy/drapey look, less structured and stiff); huge scrunchie hairties, puffy hair bands; large earrings, bracelets, rings, necklaces; sunglasses; even a scarf can give that oversize touch to the outfit which is needed.

I'm a petite Soft Classic and I can't pull off anything oversized. It just looks sloppy on me and doesn't give the effect that I'm looking for at all. I look for classic timeless pieces that are impeccably tailored, paying a little extra for tailoring if need be. They definitely are harder to find these days and they cost more, but I opt for quality over quantity in my wardrobe and end up with items I wear forever.

Your experience matches mine as a fellow petite Soft Classic. I feel dumpy and swamped in oversized clothes. I've made my mistakes, and I've realised that there's no point having them. It makes shopping very frustrating, but I'd rather have less clothes than wear something I don't look or feel right in. Aly Art is trying to help us (and I appreciate her efforts given the limits of current fashions), but I won't be wearing anything she's suggested. The shops have very little for us. I generally find that vintage clothing is the best in fit and quality for classics. I don't care if I'm not in fashion.

super petite SC and my so called oversized clothes is a sweater with drop shoulder and I would roll up the sleeves to show my wrist. Bottom has to be well fitted pants. These days I have learnt that I should save the money to amend the clothes I buy from the online stores rather than getting a lot of clothes from the online stores and try to see if anything fits (cuz 9 out of ten times there must be something not well fitted).

Omg me too! I am a petite (5ft) SC. While tailored pieces are great for office and formal wear, casual looks often tend to focus on oversized/ loose clothing (baggy pants and t shirts, flowy shirts, peasant style skirts, shirt dresses with no waist emphasis etc). So copying what i saw everyone else wearing, i too used to dress this way for casual occasions - however, rather than the effortless, cute look i was going for, i ended up looking frumpy, even shorter than i was, chubby (though am not at all overweight) and like i was wearing someone else's borrowed clothes! I have since realized that even my casual looks need a bit of definition. This doesn't mean having to wear sheath dresses and pencil skirts all the time. It can be as simple as tucking in my t shirt/ blouse into my jeans, adding a belt to a loose shirt dress or swapping a long, flowy shapeless skirt for a pleated/ A-line skirt that ends just below the knees.

Soft natural here, the dropped shoulder/ open neckline/ boxy, loose fit tops have been a game changer for me. Once I understood I was SN, I understood why a regular t-shirt in my normal size doesn't work on me. Now when I have to wear a t-shirt for work or whatever, I order a couple sizes up, roll the sleeves and front tuck into some high-waisted jeans. Perfect. On lazy days I grab my over sized, cropped sweater and leggings.

What? I'm also Soft Natural and it's the complete opposite for me! 😅 Dropped shoulders and bulky sleeves look horrible on me... I don't like oversized in general, but it also doesn't serve me particularly... It makes me look bulky and I don't want that. @virginiamontaldo440

@@Analysis_Paralysis Soft Natural is a fairly broad category (especially since pure Natural was cancelled and many middle-of-the-road women were reclassified as SN). There are SNs who are closer to pure N and others who have a strong R undercurrent. The stronger the R undercurrent is, and the more hip heavy versus top heavy you are, the less likely bulky t-shirts work on you. I am SN and that S is pretty strong in me, so the bulkiness, while not as horrible as it would be in a Romantic or in a Soft Gamine, is not ideal.
@Analysis_Paralysis
@Analysis_Paralysis Жыл бұрын
@@virginiamontaldo440 Yes, precisely! I have to add, though, I later remembered I did have a short coat that had sleeves that got bulkier towards the end, but the sleeves were cut midway and displayed my underarms... So, I kind of was able to wear it because the rest of the coat, apart from the wide sleeves, was more fitted and had a belt, and the sleeves were not so long, one would see my underarms and wrists. Maybe that was the reason I could wear it?! So, Aly is right, the item must be tailored in a way that it shows off the wrists and the ankles, than maybe we could pull off some of the wider clothes, too! :)
@virginiamontaldo440
@virginiamontaldo440 Жыл бұрын
@@Analysis_Paralysis I think anther thing to consider is the material. I look good in wider but drapey things, like boho (and again, waist emphasis). Wool stuff should be okay too since it is a very 'soft' and 'natural' fabric, it can be thick but it's still pliable and a bit clingey, and gives very earthy/cute vibes. But stiff materials should be avoided IMO.

I'm glad you made this video. I once heard a stylist say "dropped shoulders flatter nobody" and I immediately thought "Well, I feel like it looks quite flattering on me", and I love wearing a dropped shoulder shirt. I'm a Soft Natural and love playing around with oversized blouses and shirts (in lighter fabrics) and also love the different ways to style/wear them. I usually roll up the sleeves or tuck it in my pants (often times combined with twisting the front) and feel like that flatters me a lot. Also: there are a lot of shirts and blouses that ARE oversized and have a dropped shoulder but still have tight cuffs and that balances the shape a lot imho. What I don't like wearing is stiff curdoroy and heavy denim (both in jackets) because it does what you described, it drags me down, it looks stiff and immobile on me. While a denim-viscose blend and those very soft curdoroy fabrics work great. It's all about the nuances for me. I own a cardigan which is designed very unstructured and oversized (with slender underarms though) and has a softly draping collar. If the fabric wasn't so lightweight and flowy, I wouldn't be able to pull it off but the fabric IS super soft, flowy and lightweight, so it drapes and flows very nicely and adds a relaxed yet edgy touch to my outfits. I love clothes like that and would probably never figured that out if I hadn't found my body type. I always thought I need to wear more tailored pieces with lots of structure to them. Well, I was quite wrong about that... my wardrobe changed a lot during the past few years and I'm really happy about that. It's not only more flattering on me but also way more comfortable. Fun thing is: My mom always told me what would look best on me, but I never wanted to believe her. It all makes sense now.

I just look at it and think "we all went through this phase already when we were teenagers, then we learned how to wear clothes that fit." But of course they're catering to the teenagers today! We're all easily marketed to hide behind bulky layers before we're comfortable with our bodies I guess! But honestly a few things I did like, that I didn't get to wear the first time around. Annie Hall-style loose blazers for instance are good for gamines if they fit your shoulders. I'm never wearing wide leg pants again in my life though.

Plus if in side or 3/4 profile if you drew a line from bust to shoulder the upper chest would be significantly below this line. I find excess bulk in this area looks awful but if you can have a bit of structure there over sized pieces can work.

I can wear everything oversized but not if it's hanging on the ground or if it's the combination of soft fabric with soft fabric, I need structure like some sort of tailoring or some fited piece, stiff fabric. I thought I was a pure G, but I think I'm a FG (just very petite) my body is similar to Zoe Kravitz, height and muscle, but my face it's very young looking, my essence is totally different from hers. So I like the shapes she goes for when it come to oversized clothing but I go for a different color palette over all.

Nowadays I have a few big, bulky, flowy cable knit sweaters for the harsh winters and also a very loose fitting jean jacket (I refashioned it from a men's one) which I pair with slim pants and combat boots (chunky footwear looks proportionate on my large calves.) It looks fine. Balance is everything.

I do not like this trend. I’m 5 “2 and very petite. It looks ridiculous on me. I wear fitted clothing and I take it to the tailor. If it doesn’t fit right, I just took a pair of white jeans that were too big in the waist , she took them in and You can’t even tell and they fit me perfect! It did not cost that much money.😊

I’m an FN. I live in oversized clothes. I have very few pieces that are fitted. I do tend to balance out the outfit with either the top or the bottom having more structure or classic lines/fabrics. Like, if my top is really flowy, my pants will still be loose but they will be of a stiffer fabric with a defined pleat down the front or maybe a straight leg jean (not tight fitting but not overly baggy). I find the long vertical line is the key for me. I cannot do cropped tops unless there is a longer layer underneath it that is the same tone as the bottoms. I also have a bit of classic in my essence so I have to give a nod to that in the cut or the fabric somewhere in the outfit and I find I need something bold and dramatic, even if it’s just my hair or an accessory. But, ya. Oversized is my happy place for sure.

I'm sorry but I disagree on layering always being oversized. I layer a lot, but since oversized is a big nono for me, so none of my garments are oversized. They're not tight either, they're in the middle. I love wearing structured corduroy jackets that end just below my waist over t-shirts and wearing flared jeans with them. Nothing oversized, nothing very sleek or tight either. All medium in how they fit. Layering CAN be oversized, but it's not oversized PER SE.

As a Dramatic, I really like tight tops and looser bottoms (flared, harem pants, straight leg but slightly wide, etc.) but not the other way around, and not both. Shorts always look small on me. I think fittedness on the upper body for Dramatics is the most important.

I'm not sure if I am flamboyant gamine or dramatic classic. I just know that I look better with cropped tops and slightly cropped bottoms. I also look better with some structure on the shoulders if I wear more oversized skirts or trousers. Mom jeans work really well on me especially with a belt and some oversized blouse. I'm petite with rectangle shape. Any guess about my body type?

i think oversized works for me, but mostly because rather than trying to appear taller i am accepting that i am a short soft gamine. I notice if i wear a darker, cool toned long coat with structured sleeves, it doesn’t feel too “messy.” I only wear oversized clothing if it’s a sweater, a shirt i can pair with an oversized jacket, or a long sleeve cardigan. It’s only one item i’m wearing (usually outerwear) that’s oversized and everything else is properly fitted. for example, a long oversized jacket paired with a mini skirt and tee that defines my curves. all i really have to change depending on whether im going for fancy/edgy is the colors. i do the “cropped/narrow” advice you’ve given already although i didn’t know there was a term for it.

I'm Romantic Body Type and I have a Coat that is very much overzised - I love it, it's my favourite, and I have a lots of Coats, cause I love Coats. The Coat is very soft, but warm (wool I think), has a soft belt and I use it to make wais emphasis, also it is narrower at the bottom, has wide Sleeves, but they are closer on the wrist. I have not thought that it will look good on me first, but I guess now I know why it does xD

I’m a theatrical romantic, and it’s completely not my thing, oversize. I look like I’m wearing a tent, even if it’s just a shirt. And one important thing: I have not squarish but very triangular and small shoulders. Long neck and shoulders going down. And if wearing oversize, this effect pops even more, like I don’t have shoulders at all. Looks weird😅, imagine a wine bottle and my head on the top. Or a goose)) I would say)) if you have dropped shoulders, don’t wear oversize, no matter what body type you are)) you should wear fitted tops to emphasize your shape, or wear tops with squarish shoulders, it’s beautiful if you have a long neck, but still fitted, not unconstructed❤

There was this grunge look I think in the 90's with hugely baggy low slung jeans and big jackets like they were hiding themselves anc did nothing for their figure. Usually at a young age most people look their best figure wise and I couldn't understand why that trend became so popular as it looked like one was wearing 3-5 sizes bigger than they were.
@Analysis_Paralysis

I think it's different from the grunge look! The grunge look was relaxed, but not over the top bulky. This bulky trend is super weird to me. It makes the impression of nouveau riche. The oversized trend is supposed to look expensive, not relaxed. Most rich and wannabe rich influencers like to wear oversized and that's exactly why I hate it. It's too pretentious for me... ☹

@@Rocky-ry6uw I think the baggy look was the hip-hopper's look, not just in the 90s, but also still in the 2000s. :) Not sure when they went from baggy to slim, probably in the 2010s? But you're right, some of the grunge clothing (thrift clothing) did look unfitted. Like the cardigans and stuff! 😊

Some people dress to make their body look its best, subjectively speaking. Other people dress without aiming to flatter their figure because they are more interested in comfort, self-expression, etc. Some people are between the two.

@@mickey1193 I kept flitting between SN, SD & FN for the longest time. I eliminated FN, because when buying clothes, I shop in the regular section, because the tall section is definitely about 2 inches too long for me. I also look swamped in just baggy baggy everywhere. With SD, I didn’t really identify with the glam look (evening wear is different), and it seemed like a lot of the outfits there had strong waist emphasis. Currently, my waist is my problem area (the first obvious place to expand when I gain weight). May I ask what makes you say I’m a SD?
