I live in Alaska and need to wear a coat 9 months out of the year. As a gamine, I adore narrow down coats that are knee length giving me a narrower silhouette and verticals length. They offer ease of comfort when driving and do not get hot when going in and out of buildings. If I go to a parade outdoors, I wear a longer puffer coat to my ankles with denser down fill. I enjoy trench coats that go to the knee or above the knee. In spring and fall, I love wearing moto style leather or fabric. I have numerous cropped cotton jackets for summer including denim. I enjoy a colorful hat, scarf or gloves to add interest and color to my face. I wear hooded coats only when it is raining or snowing. It’s safe to say I have 25 coats for all weather conditions and activities. I also wear crossbody handbags to elongate my body in matching or contrasting colors. Sadly, I can not wear my coats open very often because weather conditions require closure. I never by a coat that has a dropped shoulder or does not look good from all sides and including sitting.

I am petite romantic and I am French. When I lived in France I had a winter coat that has a belt and I really loved it. I can wear it when it is 0°C, eventually -5°C if I have several layers under. However, I will be spending my first Canadian winter in Montréal. When the temperatures will dropped at -20°C or even down neither me or other people will care about their style. The temperatures are too extreme. Plus, nobody really look at you because of the wind and the snow. Everyone has their beanie + the hood of the coat on their head, a huge scarf that covers every piece of skin, gloves, super bulky and long winter coat which is a necessity like the one on the right (6:22) and bulky winter boots. The only visible part of your body is the eyes the rest is covered and hidden from the gaze of the others. I've given up the idea of being stylish for the winter. I have a very similar coat than the one Emilia Clarke is wearing on the right (6:22). I look like a burrito ahah but a super warm one. I used to choose black for my winter coat because it goes with everything and it is slimming. For this first Canadian winter I chose a light brown, light rosy colour almost like rose gold and a bit shiny also. I know it is not made for my body type but as I said it is a necessity so I might as well choose something that makes me look bulkier 😂. I am quite happy of my choice. Moreover, the coat had a huge discount. Anyway, what I wanted to say is that if I go back to France one day I will be following these advice and be more stylish. Thank you for your recommendation at least you give several examples and ideas for each body type not like other channel which just tell you to look at Marylin Monroe's style and copy her look, or just give you one example...

As a Canadian on the prairies I understand your frustration. I have a vintage Lunstrum and a Burberry that are my go to coats. It is all about warmth and not so much about style when facing a Canadian winter. I focus on accessories like scarves, hats and gloves a lot during the depths of winter.

Gamines range is already one of the most difficult type to find clothes that fits and looks good on them and then add to the struggle that is already overwhelming…winter coats. It’s one of reasons I hate winter. TY Ally for your dedication it’s really appreciated.

SCARVES can save your outfit too! For example, I don't like how I look with my coat buttoned all the way up, but when it's cold I balance it out with a scarf tied in a kind of down facing triangle, so it opens out my decolletage and I don't look like I am suffocating (especially with my larger size bust). There are loads of ways you can wear a scarf, different materials and colours/prints, and it is close to your face so you can not only balance your Kibbe, but also accommodate your essence and/or your colour season! I wonder if Aly has any insights on that 🤔

There was a period 1995- 2005 when puffers were considered really dated and out of fashion , but 1970s shearling coats were in , and they were just as warm. Even the skiers then had straight barn coat styles instead of puffy. Preppy pea coats were also super popular. I can't help it, I will always associate puffers with moms in the 1980s that I thought were wearing sleeping bags.

Word fellow gamine. I'm like, we already did this y'all! Wore clothes that didn't fit for like 15 years til I *thought* we learned what grown-up clothes looked like! But of course we can't forget the next generation. Starting to think it's just a teenage rite wanting to hide behind huge curtains of fabric! I do like how the fit is a little different this time, less absolute tent-looking stuff and some actual shaping! I've decided I can do the semi-oversize blazers and it works.

Great Lakes/Midwestern winters. I’m a dramatic classic and prefer a chevron or quilted (preppy style) puffer coat as they are fitted and less puffy than others. My dress coat is wool, tailored, below the knee, belted with strong lapels and a strong shoulder line.

I’m a gamine, possibly flamboyant gamine. I struggle A LOT in winter as I get cold so so easily, I live in the south of England so even though our winters can be mild they are also unpredictable like all our weather. They are also generally very wet and windy which just adds a layer of difficulty. I basically give up on fashion in winter, because of the cold, bad weather and my seasonal depression. I hate wearing coats so maybe I’ll fine one I love by following your guide!

I think it's just hard to find a celebrity who is also stylish for us. I have a bunch of coats and I find it is actually also the accessories that make an outfit go from "old" or "classic" to modern. Shoes, scarves, headgear, gloves... I like classic looking coats with fun details. I have an a shaped black coat with a huge bow in the back. I had a navy coat, but it had lilac trim. Also thought of getting a coat, but with floral embroidery on the lapels. I have plenty of ornamental looking silk and cashmere scarves (think Russian scarves) and structural looking headbands. Instead of wearing Uggs, I wear overknee boots a size larger and with warm stockings hidden inside.

Thank you for the video! It's so difficult to dress for winter being a gamine. First, gamine lines are not trendy now. Second, for very cold weather we need to put layers and layers of heavy fabrics and it's difficult to look elegant this way. I look like a walking ball of fabric 😂

The more comments, the better, so I will write another one. :D I really like your approach to fashion, Aly. Especially how wise and respectful you are towards those more "controversial" pieces of garment or accessory. After all there is no accounting for tastes. One has to be aware what effect every choice will create, though. And your advises are always so precious, thank you for doing that. I'm apparently a Soft Classic and my personal aesthetic is more into coats. I never owned a puffer. Warm greetings from pretty cold Poland!

Aly!! You are seriously one of the few stylist who goes into winter clothes in details because the truth is.. Dressing up for a cold Winter is hard to do with style.. It gets complicated very quickly. I'm pretty sure I'm a Flamboyant Gamine.. I can't say I look my best in Winter. I live in the Northwest of Ireland.. Tends to get really cold, wet and windy so alot of times (as much as I try) style goes out the window.. I struggle with this because I absolutely love looking good.. But of course not at the price of being cold. I was born in a much warmer country so my body is accustomed to hot weather more than it is accustomed to the cold. More posts on Winter styling please 🥰 You have climbed to my favourite stylists of all time (and you have superseded more seasoned stylists!) Keep up the amazing work xx

I'm from Northern New England, classic figure. I usually wear a trench or leather jacket because the car and stores are so warm. If I'm outside for a long period of time, we have puffer coats with directional sections in the stitching to give a better silhouette. They often have diagonal sections on top and bottom with horizontal sections creating a waist.

Yay what a cool video! You clearly put a lot of thought into it and it shows, you really translate Kibbe into the modern world like no one else imo. I've known that I'm a FN since one of your very first videos. I recently asked a question about DC in the stream because I was discussing with my mom whether she might be a more blunt DC, but that's a different subject. :) you answered it so well then and confirmed it, thanks! I'm so happy I got my FN winter wardrobe right haha. 13:25 JLaws coat and whole style resembles mine a lot. 😊 I recently went shopping and the saleswoman was so spot on with suggesting very FN lines for me and also said I was true autumn which also was spot on. So I got lucky. I also got a long puffer vest now, never would have considered that before but it works well. I also find it looks better without waist emphasis. Then again I find it relatively easy to shop for winter styles as a FN because length and width are easy to incorporate in winter. What I truly struggle with fashionwise are summer looks. The short lines always seem to look incoherent on me, like I'm wearing whatever.

What an all-inclusive video, thank you for this. I think I am soft gamine, or maybe soft classic. I live on the open plains of South Dakota, which means bitter cold winters with life-threatening wind chills. This year I finally bought a long puffer (I have had a short puffer for years). The long one comes a few inches below my knees and has princess lines and some diagonal stitching so I don't look so drowning in it. And it was offered in a petite size! I think I am a soft gamine (or soft classic or soft natural) at 5'1" tall. Thanks so making videos with so much detailed information!

It’s 70 degrees in Austin Texas today. I use fleece zip front jackets that are good for wearing at work. I’m a nurse - tall at 5’9 and always enjoy a long vertical line and boots. I’ve noticed that sometimes I look overly severe so I’m looking for a lighter color coat maybe a faux fur and a bright scarf hat gloves combo- kind of a honey maple beige with burgundy scarf or an amazing océan bleu. I appreciate all the photos you pulled together, helps me visualize - I’m also 65 so not a teenie bopper. 😊

It is hard to find something ideal for theatrical romantic. I've just been using a lilac columbia fleece jacket with sweaters or layers underneath. It'd be nice if there were more long coats with give to their material that you could wrap like a robe. I love the long flowy look.

Have you tried a velvet cape with ruffles or embroidered details? Or a mink wrap would look divine.

So true about the ability to counterbalance a bigger coat or jacket for a classic. I truly love shorter oversized jackets (and sweaters), i just need to make sure to bring back the balance and to add some softness, as I'm a soft classic. Btw, i also like combining shorter wider jackets with a slightly wider pant, either a-line if the jacket is more sharp, or softer like a bootcut if the jacket has softer shapes. Balance is key.

Perhaps a silk scarf like Hermes would add the soft classic touch to your look.

Great video! I'm most likely a soft natural or soft gamine and as I'm rather short I prefer shorter winter coats or even parka jackets. And for the silhouette I go for narrower styles.

Really interesting advice, I appreciate that you allow for some variation due to weather and temperature. I'm in a warmer area of Canada, I'm a romantic type, and I love puffers. I have a shaped one, with a waist, but I think they're wonderful because there is one for every type, and they slide over sweaters so easily and look so clean. Easy to care for as well. I also have a swing wool coat that is quite fitted through the upper body and find this useful for getting more dressed up. I know swing coats do not emphasize my waist, but with the fitted top on the coat, raglan and 3/4 sleeves and a little heel, it's quite fun. I put a brooch on mine too.

Thank you I appreciate your elegant styling advice and videos. In answer to your question I live in NYC with cold winters and I prefer wearing shearling or a faux fur in winter. .

I would love to see this video in the perspective of more classic, timeless winter staples (wool coat, trench coat, rain coat, cardigans) for each body type. That way we can just add trendy accessories each year and do not have to repurchase the more expensive basics and large items.

Great video as I'm struggling to find a wintercoat. I Love the oversized look but pretty much any coat that isn't classic will just drown me :(. Difficult to wear with my big knitted sweaters without looking like a hotdog 😂
