this isn’t just a jw thing, in real life certain zoo keepers use the hand motion to control lions and such. It shows how your “bigger” than them and if u don’t back down they fear you

I feel like another misunderstanding of Owen is when in dominion Owen jumps then cracks the ice where the pyroraptor swim and Owen is in cold water and then gets pulled out of the freezing water by kayla and has no after affect. So since Owen was hired from the navy to work Jurassic World in navy SEAL they do teach the team to swim in cold water

The part were Owen was faceing in between the allo and Carno , I don’t think they were even focused on him, they were focused on each other , he was kinda just in the way when they choose to fight amongst themselves. At least that’s what I thought was going on, small guy less of a threat then the meat eating bull in front of you from the allosaurus point of view.

Showing asertivity, yes. But it's not only the hand gesture. Hoskins did it wrong, because he misunderstood it. He saw Owen using it, but got the wrong impression. What Owen did was a combination of all the aspects, extending a hand towards one raptor, speaking with dominance in his voice, showing confidence, not fear, focusing on each dino separately (he noticed Delta and Charlie closing on him from each side and extended each hand towards them), the whole combo, his overall demeanor in that accident scene with the worker in the first JW movie, it all worked together nicely. Hoskins doing it completely wrong, only focusing on the hand gesture like it being a magic hand gesture, that hypnotizes dinos or something, did cost him his life. In Dominion Maisie did the same thing like Owen, extending hand, speaking with confidence, showing domination towards Beta, Grant joining the same way (except speaking), they learned it correctly from Owen. It's not just the gesture like a magic, it's a whole complex combination of various aspects working together to show the dino, that you don't fear. Like in front of their shed earlier, Maisie being afraid, and Owen saying "she (Blue) doesn't need to know", Maisie took that advise to her heart and it proved to work by catching Beta later in BioSyn's HQ.

I thought it was obvious that his hands was protecting his body, if the dinosaur attack him it will go after his hand and not his face, neck, or stomach, he also has a better chance to hit or push the dinosaur away from him if it attacks. A example of protecting yourself with your hands is if you see a baseball flying towards you will try to stop it with your hands and arms so it won't hit the rest of your body

Another reason is because of target training. It's what some reptile keepers do to get their big lizards like gators, caimans and the like to pay focus onto the person. It makes it harder for them to focus on two things instead of one. Which is why noises in hand with this action (no pun intended) are very effective in stopping things in their track. Not to mention that we do this out of instinct naturally to make ourselves look bigger to the creature in question. Of course, it won't always work if you're not confident and quick-thinking.

I do this with aggresive dogs all the time: one hand in front to direct the attack, other hand is free to hit back/grab them by the scruff. Used this a few times to push/slap away attacking dogs. When you have a flat, wide-open palm directly in their face, it's also harder for them to bite. And after swatting away several attacks/bonk on the nose, the gesture eventually gets anchored as a sign of dominance.
