12:17 is a good show of what's happening. Thorne isn't entirely without blame, but why are we calling plays like this when the pass protection was so poor. Same thing with the weird RB routes and bad clock management. A good coach is going to call some more short plays to boost the confidence of your QB.

Thorne is to blame!!! He was garbage last season, and nothing has changed. He's lucky to get a 50% completion rate each game. You sound like Hugh with all the BS excuses for Thorne. Protection is always an issue because Thorne either holds the ball too long or he panics and takes off. Thorne is incapable of making quick reads and a quick release of the ball. Keep in mind.......this is a 5th year senior still make stupid decisions.

Yes, exactly. Once he threw that first pick, it was only going to go downhill. He was going to get gunshy and scared to attempt the throws he started the game out with. He’s mentally fragile and rides off of confidence. He’s a fifth year senior and we have to scheme easy throws for him to try and get him into a rhythm as if he were a true freshman making his first start.

Payton Thorne's metrics are better than Brandon Cox's but Brandon won and he took some vicious hits. But BC's OC Al Borges was good at tailoring his offense to the capabilities of his QB. Freeze is simply asking PT to do things he's not capable of doing and I don't see a lot of creativity in the play calling, especially in the run game. I'm not talking about trick plays. We need some counter for both RB and QB, Iso, sweep, etc...Get in the pistol and let JH run downhill. We're going to have to use the run to set up the pass and catch defenses off guard and keep it simple. You can't give him too many reads or options. Steve Spurrier and Al Borges both would use flood concepts to help out their QBs with short, med, and deep receiver on one side of the field so all 3 receivers were in the QBs field of vision and he could make a quick read and not have to scan the entire field. They would also let their QB role out with protection in short yardage situations and give him a chance to pick up first downs with their feet so they wouldn't be tempted to force a throw. There's a lot that can be done to help our QB's. I thought this would happen when Freeze took over the offense but apparently not.

I am an Auburn grad and my best friend is a Michigan State grad so I have seen almost every game Thorne has played. He just cannot process and execute quickly enough against quality defenses IMO. Even if you go back to that first year at Michigan State he had pros at WR and RB and almost everything he ran was a predetermined pass before snap or 50/50 sideline fades/deep routes.

If a 5th year senior needs to "just make the pass" that often, he's a problem. I would get it if he was a true freshman or freshman but he isn't. It's laughable that he has spent so much time in the offense yet stll doesn't have complete leadership of it. If were going to be losing to the Cal's of the world, let it be with a qb that hasn't hit his potential yet. Hell if were going to throw 4 ints let it be with someone who has some excuse. Payton has ran out of excuses and Hugh is sinking the ship letting this guy drive. No SEC team would field the guy yet we still let him out there every Saturday. And you can't tell me it doesn't take a toll on his teammates cause you can see the dejection in the midst of it all.

FWIW, Aaron can't just get on here and be overly critical of coaching staffs, play selection and coaching quality as that could lead to complications with his professional broadcasting career. But it's clear by the title that he doesn't think Payton Thorne is to blame (or at least fully to blame). Reading between the lines after watching this review, there are a lot of play designs and coaching whiffs that he's pointing out in addition to some of Thorne's mistakes. Freeze and Nix don't seem to have fully prepared this team, and play calling and design are half-baked, leading to poor overall play.

A few suggestions and minor critiques. It be great if you used a smaller marker size so it takes up less of the screen. Different color markers would be very helpful as well especially when drawing different things for offense vs defense. When you cut so many plays out (which is totally understandable), it’s super helpful if you tell us what down and distance it is, which you tell us sometimes but every play would be greatly appreciated. The video also seemed to cut off pretty abruptly. Massive respect to you Aaron, I love these types of film breakdowns and I know you’ll get better with time!

Aaron, I really liked the breakdown, they are good insights, the only problem is you gloss over the awful throws he makes, and there were six or seven other really bad reads he made that for some reason you did not talk about at all (I cannot remember them all, but there were many) and you say bad throw...when it was egregiously bad for a four year player and in his second year in the system. My big question is......why do you title this, it is not PT's fault, when he threw 5 interceptions....4 for the record books, because that was not PI on the one called back, and I am a die hard auburn fan. It is disconcerting that you do not put any blame on PT, he needs to read quicker, react better, and understand in the last play that his rookie WR is asking to come out of the play and instead he throws to the one injured player.....you are the CEO of this offense, you need to know when someone is in pain and is asking to come out of the game.

Honestly, I don’t understand why they don’t let Redshirt Freshman Hank Brown come in and play, we’ve only seen him against Maryland in the Bowl game and Alabama A&M, and in that bowl game he looked way more confident and made way quicker reads. I know the offensive line didn’t hold up as good as it should’ve, but Payton waited way too long to make reads. I’d rather see the young guy get a chance to develop instead of a 5th year senior throw for 100 yards and 4 picks.

This was eye opening. Thorne was probably 35% to blame but most of the blame is on the coaches. Multiple players not in the right places, running wrong routes and not executing properly. Coaching is to blame for these problems not talent of players. Freeze keeps whining about talent but he needs to look in the mirror first.

Thorne is a 6th year senior, 4th year starter, if he hasn't figured this out by now, he's not going to. That being said, I was not impressed by the play calls/design during the game, less so after seeing this cutup. I don't know what the down and distance on these plays were but it seemed like the LB's were either blitzing or getting really deep drops. Either way, screens and draws would have made them pay, we have 6'4" TE that are always open on a quick slant, especially when the LB's are getting such deep drops. PT rushed/scrambled 15 times while all three backs carried the ball 15 times for 78 yards. That's 5.2 yd/carry we should have leaned on the run especially once it was clear that PT was going to struggle. Freeze trying to force his style of offense and we don't have the players to execute it. I didn't see anything in these plays that put the defense in conflict, not even the LBs. Establish the run, set up play action, keep it simple. Thorn is not a gun slinger. He doesn't read defenses pre-snap, doesn't feel comfortable sitting in the pocket and scanning the entire field, takes him too long. Anything over 3 seconds is too long, and considering this oline is fairly new, I'd say 2 - 2.5 seconds. Payton's passing stats and efficiency are actually slightly better than those of Brandon Cox, and Peyton has wheels, Brandon didn't but BC started for 3 years and went 29-9, not great but that was against some pretty stiff competition. Two of those wins came against UF during the Tebow years, one of them when they won the NC, and about 8 or 9 wins against Top 10 teams. But Al Borges gave BC an offense he could manage. I think the last time we defeated a Top 10 team is when we beat Alabama in 2019, they were #5. So Coach Murray, what kind of adjustments would you make if you were the OC?

Thorne made some bad calls, but it seems like 90% of the time he just had no good options. With the pass rush as strong as it was, why were there so few check down routes? Even the "short" plays were 10+ yards. Every QB is gonna miss some calls in the middle of a game, but there should be 0 routes that leave a guy like this asking why. It's a coaching problem when you're paying a guy $6.5 million and there are obvious problems in your play design. Also lets not forget that coaches can talk to players now, so no excuse for bad clock management or throwing to a clearly injured receiver.

Yeah, there’s a ton of QB to QB sympathy here. It’s dense to think everything is one player’s fault, but there’s no defending Thorne here. He’s a fifth year senior who can’t read a defense. The Freeze system is incredibly QB friendly, it’s really hard for a guy to fail this miserably. There’s legitimate home run threats that spread the field now. You can no longer shift the blame onto the WR room as you could last season. The whole argument for Thorne is that he’s a stable, veteran presence in an otherwise young offense. The kind of guy who won’t really win you games, but won’t lose them for you either. Yesterday ripped that argument to shreds. There’s no benefit to playing Thorne over any of Hank Brown, Holden Gernier, or Walker White if the floor is this low.

Maaaaaan sounds like most of those plays were Thorne’s fault. I guess where it falls on Freeze is calling a lot of medium and deep pass plays for a guy that can’t properly read coverages and isn’t very accurate. Idk what else you do though. Thorne is scared to throw in the middle of the field and if we run quick screens every play it’s going to be a whole lot of 3 and outs.

So based on the film you reviewed, I counted 12 mistakes by PT alone. That's too many mistakes given the number of passes Auburn attempted. You didn't even show all of his throws or his INT's either. So if I had to guess, Thorne made 16-19 critical mistakes in the game against Cal.

I think a better title is “Thorne isn’t solely to blame.” I’m picking up what you’re putting down with the scheme, and the RBs crowding passing lanes. You did a good job to touch on him needing to get the ball out quicker on most of his poor plays. However, you showed 1/2 of his interceptions, and basically blamed Cam Coleman for one of them because he was jogging/hurt. Coaches should’ve pulled him out of the game if he’s hurt, sure, but Thorne had to have the awareness not to throw the ball to the banged up guy. Auburn wins that game with better a more accurate and more decisive QB.

I get it. We ran play action power one time, and Frazier at sniffer/h-back completely whiffs the block. Total lack of effort. I also get he was a little under duress. He definitely holds on to the ball way too long. With as much pressure they brought, we surely had 1-on-1 matchups that were not found, and if they weren’t won, then at least give a play a chance instead of taking the sack and killing the drive. And the last interception? Total lack of will to win. Terrible effort. Terrible attitude.
