Well, the truth is, the Boyscouts has never been exclusively boys club. I know when I was in it, my entire town's Boyscouts were led by mothers rather than a guy, and someone's sister helping out wasn't uncommon as families would continue to hang around families while doing things. Only when we had big events where people from outside of town came were male scout leaders involved.

Jason Momoa was clearly referencing when his character Khal Drogo raped Daenerys and Daenerys fell in love with him shortly after. He's mocking the fantasy genre for these silly plot devices and how everyone just accepts them. He shouldn't get flamed for referencing something he did in a TV show because his character and plot was written that way.

There's more to it than that. They apparently filmed both a more tender and a more rapey version of the scene which was kinda weird for the actors in particular. It's more ironicly funny because I'm sure everyone on that panel had at least discussed that in passing, with both Jason and Emilia being left to figure out WTF they were supposed to do with that as actors. Its one of the more questionable choices the showrunners made and all around bizarre. I'm sure they were sick to death of talking about that at the time and could totally understand why it was funny.

Eagle Scout here. I was in the Boy Scouts from my inception as a Tiger Cub, all the way through to my eighteenth birthday, and have still continued to help out around my community since then. Boy Scouts was a terrific influence in my life. It taught me so much with regards to not only wilderness survival and striving for personal growth, but also the benefits of volunteer service, charity, and unbiased kindness and respect. I'm ecstatic to hear it's moving beyond gender specificity, as I believe everybody could learn and become so much more with the help of their local Scouting programs. I don't know anything first hand about the Girl Scouts, but from what I've heard, it's only a fraction of the program the BSA provides. At least that's how it's been described to me. And I think it's safe to say whatever implications would result from putting teenage boys and girls together for week long summer camps and the like, as well as breaking up a major fraternal aspect that could otherwise be a very positive thing in many boy's lives, are some things to be considered. But I think that is a conversation for another day, and the pros far outweigh the cons here, regardless.

Dylan Morgan Also an Eagle Scout. I'd have to say I agree with you for the most part. I don't see any problem with Cub Scouts being integrated but there definitley would be an issue for Boy Scouts. i agree the boy scouts the program can work for boys and girls the only problem would be activities and camping together maybe. it would be easier if the girl scouts just followed the boys scouts program if they want girls to try to get eagle, the maybe activities and camping issue would be gone. I say "maybe" because maybe all that happens is you get more tent and a mom becomes a scout master.

This is such a confusing time to be alive. First I grow up being told boys and girls are different. Then I am told that we should all be proud of who we are and wear our differences with pride. Then I am told we are all equal and we should teach equality and boys and girls are the same. Then I am told people can't change who they are. Then I am told that if you don't like what you are, you can change it. Now bathrooms are gender neutral and boys can join girl scouts and girls can join boy scouts. People can change their gender and sexual orientation changes with the wind. Why is anything anything anymore? What is anything. Should I be happy about myself or not? I am more confused than Elmer Fudd trying to figure out if it is duck season or rabbit season.

At the end of the day, scouts should be good enough for all kids. It seems like the girl scouts is more for arts and crafts rather then outdoor stuff. If girls want to do only outdoor stuff they should be allowed. The idea of merging the 2 sounds great. Everyone is happy
@Settlers6
@Settlers6 7 жыл бұрын
>Everyone is happy How do you see that happening? You just admitted that most girls like doing something else than boys. If the companies merge and the boys do the same things as the girls, one of those groups is not going to enjoy it. Would you suggest that every activity is optional and boys and girls can pick and choose what activity they participate in? But then the team-building will suffer. And like I commented before, I really think 'boys only' spaces and 'girls only' spaces are important, especially at that young age. Not all spaces need to be like that, obviously, not even most, just 1 or 2 where boys can be themselves without holding back and adjusting to the girls (which is often the direction it goes, instead of vice versa).
@Settlers6
@Settlers6 7 жыл бұрын
>also, its not a good idea to seperate boys and girls until they reach a certain age....That will only make the other side feel like aliens, and make socialising way harder. That's clearly not what I'm saying. If you read my original comment, you'll see that I said: "Not all spaces need to be like that, obviously, not even most, just 1 or 2". Most spaces are mixed. And that's great. I just think there should also be spaces where one gender can just be without members from the other gender, as that changes the interactions and the development. >ive read they still seperate the troops by gender. Just that the girls now get to enjoy boy scouts things. If that's true, then great, I have no complaints. Do you have the source where you read it?

Arun, I was in Girl Scouts for over 25 years (until this year) from a girl to being in charge of the area where I live. You are not alone in believing that GS is more arts and crafts, but that's an outdated view and honestly part of the problem GS have. They have so many more programs these days for girls to learn much needed skills even science and computer programming to name just a couple.

It's like how Perez Hilton used to out people as gay. It's not his fucking decision to make. If someone is abused, it's on them or a relative to start the fight, not someone they've never met who opens this big can of worms by naming powerful people.

Former Girl Scout here. My mom signed me up in first grade and I stayed for 3 years before throwing a fit to quit. It was boring for me. We met once a month for 2-3 hours at a local church and spent the majority of the time doing crafts, singing songs and watching the older girls cook. (I spent most of the first 30 mins hiding in the bathroom crying to go home) one girl was in a wheelchair so the troop leaders decided we would do all of our activities indoors while sitting. While I’m glad she was included, I was bored out of my mind. I wanted to play in the woods and go camping like my neighbors in Boy Scouts. They even looked nicer than us in their uniforms, all we had were vests. When the Jamboree came around the leaders told us it wouldn’t be fair for our troop to go without that girl so they wouldn’t let anyone sign up. When I hear other girls talk about the fun they had in Girl Scouts I can’t help but feel like I missed out on all potential fun. The program needs heavily revised. Knowing how to sew and cook is important but ONLY doing that while watching all the other Scouts go to camp and swim and hike and explore just isn’t fair. I’d sign my future daughter up in a heartbeat for boy scouts if this all works out.

Girl Scouts was a great experience for me when I was little, I enjoyed selling and eating cookies, lol! We also had a Girl Scouts camp where we made bracelets, decorated t shirts with craft, played games, made masks, played kickball, and did a lot of other fun activities, but then again I do enjoy making things with crafts, designing, and decorating, so that's probably why I liked it so much. Plus, It was a great way to make friends. Camping would've been fun too, while learning how to build campfires would've been really useful, so why not just add those activities to Girl Scouts instead of putting them in Boy Scouts? Also, With so many people speaking out about sexual harassment and assault, it almost gives me hope that could change, no one girl or guy, should ever have to experience that, especially when they are so young.

I am an Eagle scout, and I acheived this rank last year. I support this decision because I have female friends who are sisters of other scouts, who went with them to cubscouts, where the girls also participated in most activities in the meetings. After cubscouts ended though, the next high adventure program they could really participate was venture crew, in which they had to wait until they were 14 to join. I know they would of loved to join boy scouts, but just were never given the chance. They would of been stellar scouts, and given the chance, they would have become an Eagle before me. The deserve the chance.

Former Scoutmaster for 8 years, I guided 12 scouts to the rank of Eagle two of them my sons. I have the presidential scoutmaster award, scoutmaster of the year 4 times, top troop in my council 6 times and scouting family of the year once. We talked about this years ago but many of the establishment didnt want it and said that was taken by explorer scouts and venture crew. (too bad they can not make Eagle there) When the discussion came up years ago the girlscouts threatened litigation if we did so it was dropped for 15 to 20 years. The original in England Boyscouts became co ed in 1991. International Jamborees are amazing with boys and girls from all over the world. Me and most of the people I know in the scouting community love this change.

Don't you feel their is something essential taken away? These are maturing boys experiencing puberty together with other boys who understand what they are going through. It kinda hard to talk about how Tammy makes you feel weird and tingly to your other cabin-mates when some of them are girls (maybe even Tammy. There are things that boys need to talk about in order to not feel isolated, that they just can't with girls around. I would think it would definitely make girls uncomfortable and insecure to hear boys talk about how they are starting to notice boobs. Yet I feel boys need a place to talk about this and other "boy" things. For some boys scouts are the only chance to experience this brotherhood, when they otherwise always in class with girls, at home with sisters, etc...

Derek Lutifer That is not the point of Boy Scouts. You are fundamentally missing the point of the organization. I'm an Eagle Scout, and discussing that was strictly forbidden. The point is to build a set of skills in a safe environment where hard work and failure are encouraged so that you can learn things that aren't taught in schools. These skills aren't gender specific. The scouting community loved this change. The only people upset are people that aren't involved.
@dereklutifer2881

Forbidding boys from talking about girls? Technically talking about sexual stuff may be forbidden, but was impossible when you have a group of boys experiencing puberty and noticing girls for the first time. I was in boy scouts and we talked about girls. Not to mention non sexual stuff boys are going through at that time of their lives. There is stuff that is embarrassing to talk about around girls. it also is hard to fail around girls, more humiliating. I shared tears and failures in boy scouts, that if girls were around I may not have even attempted out of fear. I wasn't very popular with the girls in jr high and didn't need to give them anything else to laugh at me about. Boys are more comfortable around other boys. And like I said, some boys need a space where they can "be boys" without girls around. Not to mention boys are raging balls of hormones. This just opens up the door for them to peek in girls tents or do other inappropriate things.

krustomer The same thing happened to me. My dad and brother were in the Boy Scouts and I was always so jealous of all the stuff they got to do. While I was finishing up my time in Girl Scouts, I found that there was practically nothing outdoorsy for me to do in a group setting. Sometimes I was able to accompany my brother and father on their camping trips because my mother was working. I enjoyed those so much more than I did my Girl Scout activities. I would have loved for this to be an option for me. I would have rather been a Boy Scout than a Girl Scout.

Personally I'm an Eagle Scout and the experiences I had will stay with me for the rest of my life and I would be fine with letting girls who want to be an Eagle Scout try and attain that rank, as long as it doesn't change the experiences of the boy already in the organization.

everyone's forgetting the bad side of whats going on in the boy scouts. Thats great you had a positive experience, but you're white. I know so many latino kids and had so many black friends who NEEDED something positive like the scouts, BUT were refused. It was only available to the wealthier families, who were - guess what? mostly white, but always richer. Fix the issue of allowing scouts of all NATIONALITIES from ALL CLASSES first, then we can talk about allowing a girl - who may also be black or latino to be denied membership

Eagle Scouts can actually get scholarships to college- Girl Scouts didn't give me anything other than friends and some bombass cookies. The Boy Scouts have always done it better (teaching better skills, having more fun, and having better opportunities for older members). My only regret is that this wasn't an option when I was a kid. Perhaps Girl Scouts should work on improving their own programs instead of attacking those who do it better.

Philip DeFranco I'm a scout. Scouting is a world wide organization, and BSA (Boy Scouts of America) is just the US version. In all other member countries except some middle eastern ones girls are able to join. The US is one of the only places where girls can't join scouts. The Girl Guide program (the original Girl Scouts, also from the UK) was created by the same guy who founded Boy Scouts because girls wanted to participate as well. I think that the two groups should merge in the US, but I doubt this would ever happen. This would be beneficial to both groups as they wouldn't take potential members from one another and could consolidate their following. However, this could be troubling due to BSA's troubling history with sexual assault. BSA has good policies when it comes to adult leadership, but these would have to be revisited in the case of a merge. Most if not all adult leaders are parents of scouts, and though I have no evidence, I think a parent leader is less likely to assault someone than a volunteer. In my experience as a scout I have never witnessed nor heard of any such cases personally, but I understand it would be and is a problem.

J E F F heaven forbid girls have something to call their own! Boys too. Learn from each other, there's school, after school activities etc. The one and only thing left for all girl/ boy and have to turn to co ed. As a mother of 5, 4 boys, 1 girl, married to a man who is 1 of 12 , girls need girl time, boys need boys time. Boys need to learn to be men, girls women. My son's can't relate to everything my daughter goes through. Nor do I expect them to. Vice versa. My husband was thankful for all boy time given he was surrounded by 8 sisters. No matter how understanding etc. He resented being around them 24/7 till boy scouts. Asked my daughter about this, she's 8,. Nope. She's around her brothers everyday. Camping fishing etc. Girl scouts only place where she can be around others she can relate to. Course my boys are boys, not snowflake skinny jean wearing pansies. But can braid their sisters hair. Daughter a girly girl that can use power tools at 8 and help dad with an oil change. Like she says, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Why is being around others like you a bad thing?

as a canadian that never did any "scouting", why cant they merge? They are essentially the same Idea, so merging them could save money, and leave open the options for both genders to do previously exclusive activities (camping, cookies, etc)

pizzagroom I think the biggest hurdle with merging them would be the need to rework so much of their structure. They have existed as two independent organizations for so long. The BSA is over 100 years old. What I’m wondering is to what degree are girls going to be incorporated into the bsa because the events have always been structured with just boys in mind.

I was a Girl Scout growing up and loved it immensely. I gotta say it helped me become the nature-loving person I am today. We used to go camping for a month in the summers and it was always a blast. I eventually stopped being a Scout when I became interested in swimming (didn't have the time for both) but I still have my vests full of patches. I think it's great because kids get to experience a lot of different things and figure out what they're into and not into. I'm 27 now so I really don't know what's changed since I was a kid, but when it comes time for me to have kids I'll definitely be looking into Scouting as an introductory extracurricular. I think it's great to be able to choose to have your son and daughter in either/or since shuffling kids to extracurriculars is a full time job in itself. If it weren't for my best friend's mom (who's a teacher and had a better after school schedule than my parents) taking me to and from my swim practices and meets, I wouldn't have been able to go that route.

I would have highly suggested moving to Venture Scouts once you turned 14. Its a coed program that is a lot like Boy Scouts, but it is directed towards doing High Adventure programs. In this you can still learn the skills you would learn in both programs, and you would also have the opprotunity to do more fun and exciting things.

On the Jason Mamoa speech. ....He was not making a rape joke. He was referencing an actual plot line of a popular TV show. In the first season of Game of Thrones, Jason's character Kahl Drogo is gifted a wife. She is a very young and naive virgin. He rapes her every night until she seeks help from her lady's maid, who teaches her the art of seduction and love making. She uses her new found skill to woo her new husband. Drogo and Daeny fall madly in love with each other. Jason points out that plot line as one of the many diverse reasons he liked doing Sci Fi shows and movies. NOT because he wants to live out some male rape fantasy or because it fits in the Harvey Weinstein drama. I think that using that clip in conjunction to this story is blindly irresponsible and taken completely out of context.

Kit Cat 1974 Side note: In the books, he does not actually rape her. That whole scene is handled *very* differently, and having read the books first and watched the show afterwards, I recall being like "wait, did they just turn this into a rape-thing, or did they just execute it really poorly?" Drogo being relatively caring and gentle towards Dany is actually a central part of his character early on, it looked like the show was going for the same portrayal a couple episodes in, which contrasts really weirdly with the first couple of scenes between them.

In the books she is still sold by her brother to the Khal for an army (weird trade, army seems much more valuable), and it is made evident that if she does not comply they will have no use for her, so she is like 12-14 (?) in the books and been given to a hulking warlord. I can't remember all the book details anymore, it was awhile ago and they are kinda overrated, Malazan is better. I don't even get some of the stuff the show changed though.. Like Sandor meeting Brienne and them fighting.

You can't blame the Girl Scouts for troops having boring leaders. I was in GS for 7 years and went camping numerous times and did so many outdoorsy and fun activities. At least 10 a year. Far more than the Boy Scout troop in my school ever did. That's because our leaders put time and effort into making it extremely educational and fun for us.

I feel like as far as Jason Mamoa, I stand by what George Carlin once said right before doing a routine about rape that stayed respectful to the victims while still being interesting and funny. He said that it’s what you exaggerate. What’s being exaggerated is a tongue and cheek nod to Blade Runner with how Dekker sexually assaulted Beatrice, but the next time they were on screen together she loved him. Perfectly fine if you ask me.

To address the main question (is this going to provide a good change, the boy scouts controversy, and the Jason Mamoa Story: This to me seems to be the start of a change in terms of the mindset towards speaking out. Before it was hidden, kept secret in fear of the influence he had. I believe this will inspire change within companies to realize the repercussions of these actions being shown to the public, and to create prevention policies (not for the benefit of the women, but for the company cause money is the root) to prevent issues like this become a PR disaster. Along with this, people who are harassed will have a strong safety net when they speak out as previously some were afraid because they would be ostracized but now with this huge focus, one could report and reliably have many others backing them, both influential persons and the masses. A great example of power in numbers and a good support system. As for girl scouts and boy scouts, there is no tangible reason to segregate men and women in this respect. Give them options of what their interests are, and let them work together. By telling kids no, and forcing them to learn and do what others prescribe their gender to do is going to create both apathy and a separation between the two genders for no reason. If boys and girls work together from a young age, when they grow into adults and enter the workforce we will have both being experienced in working with the opposite gender. This could even go as far as reducing workplace harassment if they can reliably learn to work with and around their opposites. And for Jason Mamoa? This was a joke referencing the raping in Game of Thrones. If just the joke is a huge deal, what about the actual showing of rape in GoT? Why is a joke from years back even more harmful than the direct depiction and emotion of it? Sorry again for the long post, but those are the views I have on the topics here. I did my best to keep personal bias out of it, and hope it helps inform others. If you have any questions about anything I talked about here in this comment, please leave a comment below.

The only precaution in regard of supporting the idea of people "speaking out" is to avoid getting out of hand with how this is used. Right now powerfull people have a system that lets them do whatever they want withouth fear of repercussions so it will take some time for the balance to go towards the other side, which is falsely accusing people to destroy their lives, and therefore blackmailing them to do whatever the accuser wants, given they accuser would have a new system that supports them, instead of abusers. In the end, giving way too much power wont change things, it will only keep the cogs going but making a different sound, there must always be some kind of control to avoid abuse of any kind.

Rape happend in real life and will always keep happening. Not showing something that happend a lot in that time is just deying that bad things happen to people at all. And since when the fk is rape worse then killen someone and ripping their heads of their shoulders? People these days... In the books btw he never raped her, but the mountain did gang rape an underage tavern girl.

Terracidal I'm unsure about the boy scouts story. I want girls to be able to get the same experiences that boy scouts get, it's an organisation far more oriented towards adventure and practical skills than the girl scouts. My fear is that if will go the same way as other organisations that were male-only become co-ed and start fundamentally changing to be more "accessible" to their female members. Maybe I'm just being paranoid but I don't want to see the spirit of scouts die out because it loses its focus.

If separated, girls don't get the chance to learn those practical skills that you speak of, and boys don't get to learn what the girls do(really don't know). So instead of mixing everything and forcing people to learn what they aren't interested in (like many do now, also see "Don't Stay In School" by Boyinaband) they should give the options to go to Adventures, and Practical Skills as you put it or go to the stuff that the girls do instead. This way everybody has the option, and nobody is restricted to the things others force on them. And again to use your words, the "spirit of the scouts" wouldn't die.

They don't I think. It's more that the companies that make them have a vested interest in making them seem highly desirable, and tech writers haven't had a new device to talk about for a while. At the end of the day they're just spyware devices for your home. You'll never navigate menus, or read the news with a friggin voice assistant, you can't shop around with one, or even stand to hear more than three options read out.. in fact all you can do is bark orders you already know at them - set alarm, pause, play, etc. But they're listening all the time, collecting data on you. To be honest, you won't ever use them for anything other than what you used voice control for on any device 10 years ago that had it, but they get a lot more out of you. It kind of makes me laugh that we've had Siri and co built into out phones for 5 years and everyone ignored it, but then they started selling you a device that's just that same voice assistant so they can hear what's going on in your home and people rushed out to buy them. Just remember, 2 months later when the novelty's worn off and it's just sitting on the shelf or side table, it's still listening.

I am one of three siblings where we all where scouts, two girl one boy. My sister and I lived for camping and pinewood derby and all the stuff we could do as a family. Girl Scout camping was either in air conditioned cabins or so rough my mother made comparisons to military training. Boy Scouts was a fun in the middle. There was more to do, and as someone who did Girl Scouts all the way through, by the end of it we had nothing to do. At the high school level you can basically mentor or work on your awards (bronze, silver, gold) The paper work complaint is no joke. Our troop leader told us the reason we didn't do something's was that her and other moms didn't have time to get all this training done. My brothers troop also seemed cooler because they would have meetings in their little groups but the troop was of boys of all ages. This meant when they got together for events things were awesome. There were boys my sister and I went to school with, so we didn't feel awkward or have to stay around my brothers friends. And they had the best parties. I remember the Halloween parties were epic. All these families in cool costumes and awesome food. My Girl Scout troop had seven people for the last like four years. Which was cool, and we did some cool stuff. I love thinking day, something my troop ran for a few years. And my sister and I went to tons of cool events, like I had a multi troop sleepover where it was science themed and the activities were making slime and learning about all this other stuff. My sister recently got to spend a few hours at a community college and get a general lesson on some basics in forensic science (she's in eighth grade) Overall I think the idea is great, but I think if Girl Scouts made it easier to do things (and fixed the money with Girl Scout cookies, we seriously made less than a dollar per box) as well as made camping better and made it more interactive I would've enjoyed it more. I went on great trips with my troop and made awesome friends, but I have just as many great memories from tagging along with my dad and brother to Boy Scouts, and I spent much less time there
