as an australian who has grown up with people wearing australian flags on australia day, using australian flag napkins, etc, i really don't understand a majority of the flag code. obviously i don't have as much of a connection to the australian flag as americans have to their flag, but i feel like wearing the flag and displaying it is somewhat patriotic, like if i see someone wearing their flag i think that they're proud enough of their country to show it to everyone that sees them, not that they're disrespecting their flag because it's touching the floor. i feel like people should be worrying about the things that tomi lahren has been saying, not that she folded a flag.
@War4507 жыл бұрын
Americans think the same way. Wearing clothing patterned after the flag is not against the flag code (using an actual US flag as clothing is). It's a sign of patriotism and love of your country. You don't wear apparel of something you hate after all. That's why the claims of hypocrisy are bullshit. Nobody on the right thinks wearing US flag memorabilia is disrespectful.

No one gets offended at violations of the flag code. It's literally just relevant to active military personnel. It's just to point out the arbitrary bullshit that people like Toni Lahren scream about "disrespecting the flag."
@thatboringone78517 жыл бұрын
Having seen the exact same, I entirely understand the US flag code. It's an official reference for what's considered respectful, not a law you have to follow. It would be useful for the government to have a guideline if they use the flag for something, since so many people there do see it as something important. Plus, the way people use it even here in Aus is both hilarious and stupid. I mean think about it, flag napkins. There are people who feel they are so patriotic, that they clean their face with their patriotic symbol. The only thing more ironic than that would be flag toilet paper.
@magnus_cockstrong7 жыл бұрын
none of the screaming people on either side seem to really care about the flag or the flag code. The flag is just another divisive political tool at this point. Any so called "disrespect" to the flag is less gross to me at this point than those who are using it as a political hammer. In a word, hypocrisy.

Most people don't remember, but Tomi Lahren's first viral video was her rant on Colin Kaepernick's protest. She literally made her entire career off of weaponizing the flag and "patriotism" to attack the first amendment rights of a citizen engaging in peaceful protest.
@giantmess43357 жыл бұрын
maybe we are weaponizing the flag but so do other people when weaponizing their own ideals. when speaking their opinions, or talking about how they are above people because of religion or wealth. Everyone chooses to try to shut others up for little reason else but getting offended over the ideals of another. like with Muslims and Christians. I'm basically considered racist here for believing in GOD than their ALLA. I cant understand that. I'm considered sexist for hating a woman I cant stomach being around. not all women just a few I have had problems with personally. We as a nation of blockheads love to weaponize ideals for our own gain. funny thing is some serial murders actually think the same and we criticize them. isnt that hypocritical but many people now believe ISIS is in the right because religion and how they came to be.

Thank you for covering the issue in Spain. I'm Catalan, and will for ever be Spanish and defend my country's unity. Catalonian region lost 35% of its GDP in 10 days due to having around 1,500 companies leaving the region due to political instability cause by the secessionists (amongst them, one of Spain's largest banks). This secessionist craziness is only bringing us chaos and dividing our society. The Catalan Government had to rule in coalition PRECISELY because pro-independence parties did NOT have a majority. Regardless, the phrase about how you can win with half the people's votes but cannot govern with half against you, is particularly true in our region. We will NEVER support a republic outside of Spain and the European Union. This is damaging our region and people to an large extent and having the ex Catalan president Puigdemont fleeing to another country right after declaring independency is a clear sign of how this will never work.

ibigrooster11 there are actually more racists on the left than the right because they view it as a positive. Is black lives matter left or right? Is la Raza left or right? The whole left ideology is based on treating people differently based on the color of their skin.

Sadly that is the general mentality of people easily tricked by lies from Trump. That is what Trump has done, if he says something but can't back it up with facts he either doubles down on the lies or starts throwing a fit about something else to distract from what he said...and it works every time.
@RacconAndMT7 жыл бұрын
Blabesh You know, I love how being right-wing is morally equal to being a racist in your view, and that you think anybody on the right is just a genuinely bad person. And yes, it's absolutely just "virgins trolling". Apparently, trolling virgins make up enough of the US population to get a president elected. Seriously, the OP was talking about how he's had it with people making ridiculous claims and backing them up with insults, and your reaction is "yeah, it's all 'dem right-wing virgin trolls"? Are you familiar with the term 'self-awareness'?
@TheTrivek427 жыл бұрын
I've had those experiences way too often, and the reason I lean to the right is because of this. Before the election, as a European, I really didn't know a lot about the American political situation, so I asked and searched. When I asked leftists, they'd call me a racist and other things, if I asked right-wingers, they'd often actually try to provide evidence (however true they might be). From there on out I found many right-wing (mostly anti-SJW) channels who actually supported their claims, something I hadn't seen from big left wing channels. Not to forget how CNN even swayed millions of people to the right with their lies. It's this difference that made me feel like the right was the right choice, and definitely the more welcome choice.

Except setting it on fire is technically the proper means of disposal according to said code. Yes, I am aware that it specifically mentions a ceremony in which the stars, field of blue, and stripes are individually burned, but burning the entire thing seems more in line with flag code than throwing it away which is what I'm assuming most Americans do with flags they no longer want/need.

Just talk about the victims, but don't give the dirtbag the time of day and don't spread their face everywhere and give them fame for something so horrid. Infamous is still famous, sadly. These people live for the attention they get. They see another dirtbag get all the attention and have their faces on every newsite, and they want a piece of that. Everybody wants to be famous, but some people go to the extreme and will take any attention that they can get. I say don't give it to them and ignore their existence. Focus on the victims and what happened itself, but don't give the dirtbags what they want.

The thing people need to keep in mind with the ongoing issues of Spain is that this is what civil unrest that can lead to civil war looks like. To those that say "they should just let them leave" I flip that question on you "should the union have let the south leave?". As for independence both Spain and Catalonia will suffer if they separate. Their country just got out of the "Great Recession in Spain" a few years ago and separating will cause even more damage to both. I don't see anything wrong with Spain defending their constitution with force, we did the same in the USA. Its the same issue that happened with the Vietnam war where TV helped sway public opinion against the war since it was the 1st time the American people could see what war really looked like. People forget how brutal and destructive the civil war was, and that's without mentioning the unconstitutional things that happened during the civil war. But most people forget about the civil war because nowadays people don't want to read up on history and learn about what happened in the past. I personally think it would be better if both of them find a middle ground, but that hasn't really worked in the past.
@NoAgendaStudios7 жыл бұрын
The Civil War didn't start until the Confederates attacked a Union fort. If you show me where the Union attacked people in the streets for protesting and voting for secession, you'll show me something the Union shouldn't have been doing (I wouldn't be surprised if there are examples. Protests are often met with violence in every country, even today. It's still wrong). Let them vote. Let them protest. Then tell them no. I agree with taking away their self-rule when the leadership is making moves at violating the law. I don't agree with use of force against non-violent citizens.
@rituparikh22557 жыл бұрын
Tbh we should have just let the confederacy leave. The former confederate states are the poorest and least educated in the union and we would be better off without them

CrazyRed98 it's ok if you don't see anything wrong, it just means you hate freedom and love the fascism of capital democracy. Which this is since you should believe that a true democracy wouldn't include in their Constitution obstruction of states to cecede from the union. Spain is the kids parents in the story today and Catalonia is the kids, you're saying you think it's fine to beat the child as they did and they shouldn't be allowed to be taken away from the father and stepmother. That's what you see FYI
@MrElionor7 жыл бұрын
+CrazyRed98 What's Catalonia doing that's nearly as bad slavery? I suppose one approach would have been to just go "our name is Benet and we ain't in it do whatever you like to those black people" and maybe it would have saved a lot of blood shed but I still don't think it would have been the moral approach the real question should be is the conflict is the war worth it? Writing in a dictator clause into your constitution though is pure genius why didn't our founding fathers think of that?

No one is going to be completely free doofus, in any country you go to the face of the earth. England, France, Sweden, the United States, Switzerland, China, India, Russia and definitely Saudi Arabia are not completely free. Go down the list. And that isn't a bad thing, I mean, do you think people want to live in a place where everyone is free to roll up and hit people without the help of the government to prosecute and protect? As for the freedoms we enjoy, do you have the right to life, liberty (in a legal equality sense), and the pursuit of happiness? More or less. We have rights that count for everyone, like freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the right to due process, the right to assembly, vote, etc to even change the rulers. In fact, the idea of us being closer to slavery or tyranny as a lot of people like to say - is downright silly and shortsighted.

Fish4Man61 I understand what you're saying and I agree to that. The problem is that most of Americans put it like their country was the only free country in the world and any other isn't. +Wolves bandwagon fan since 1998 Context is important. Everything is a label. Your name is a label. However the way liberals use the word "label" is different from how other people use the word label. In that context she's saying she doesn't agree with just lumping everyone into groups based on arbitrary things. I.E. ALL blacks, asians, indians, hispanics, arabs are all lumped into "people of color". Stating she's a millenial isn't a label, it's an objective statement. You're either a millenial or you're not, that isn't a "label", it's a fact. So that isn't an example of inconsistency. It's an example of you not knowing the difference between objective statements and labels.

War450 Being a hyper conservative and anti-feminist who and then saying abortions should be legal. Now, they should be and they are, but saying that while ranting about "snowflakes" who want equal rights and how stupid they are is hypocrisy at it's finest. I don't think she has any actual beliefs, she simply says she agrees with whatever belief will get her more attention. She hasn't been in the news for a while so she wore an American flag and made a nonsense statement that she knew would get her attention. If anyone is a "snowflake" it's her. She wants attention for being different from other hot blonde chicks.
@War4507 жыл бұрын
+Maggie Karabel I don't know much about Tomi but I have never heard of her ranting about people who want equal rights. It's just the left the modern western society simply never advocate for equality. They advocate for supremacy, for segregation, for hand-outs, for oppression, for degeneration, and regression. Never equality. So she may very well be a snowflake just looking for attention. But that doesn't automatically make her arguments invalid or wrong. Who makes an argument is irrelevant to what the argument is. Even the most vile and evil people in history, like Stalin, can be right about things. So what Tomi is simply doesn't matter. The most incredible thing about the first story is the significance people give a piece of cloth. You can respect what it stands for without having a 'flag code'😂. Just seems ridiculous from an outsider's perspective, not patriotic...
@omunday19957 жыл бұрын
i agree, im the same with my countries flag and anthem, im extremely appreciative of how lucky i am of the fact i was born here and have the opportunities i do as a result, however my flag is just a piece of cloth with some colours on it, nothing really special about it, and my anthem (God save the Queen) is the most boring piece of shit ever orchestrated, i don't believe in god and i don't really care for the royals, yet im still patriotic for my country and the people in it.

Philip Martin cause to people it's a symbolism. A very big symbolism. Of course you will never understand that.

I'd be much more annoyed by people shitting on my country's culture than our flag. I mean with very little alteration it could be the flag of several other countries (it's the Irish flag in case you were wondering)
@LeeusMattheus29897 жыл бұрын
Dave Tyler Exactly. A symbol for an *idea* that has meaning. The cloth itself only exists to remind you of an *idea* that we collectively value as a nation. The cloth itself is meaningless. If you're too absorbed in the material aspect of the symbol, then you lose sight of the idea for which it stands... Not very patriotic if you ask me.

That couple makes me so angry I could scream. I completely agree that they do not deserve to have children. They also don't deserve to be anywhere except prison. The fact that they had their 5 year old so brainwashed that she was willing to lie for them....ahh I'm just so angry!

I like how the flag code only seems to apply when it can be used to criticize your political rivals. I don't think anyone really, actually cares about the flag code.
@Redbird-dh7mu7 жыл бұрын
Of course no one actually cares, you think they cared about everyone else wearing the flag, nah, they only care when their rival does something bad

I just returned from visiting Barcelona, and Spain. From the experience I had, it seems more younger generations were in favor of independence and older generations tended to side with Spanish unity. Most people I spoke with, wished for governmental compromise, and generally seemed nervous about the upcoming months. (I also understand the Barcelona is an international city, and may not totally represent the whole of Catalonia) I believe in Catalonia's need to self identify, but if you allow every region to claim independence, you'd have anarchy across all major countries of the world. At it's core, the vote and declaration of independence were against the constitution, and therefore illegal. It's not surprising the politicians are in trouble. I just hope the citizens get to retain a peaceful home, because it is a beautiful and wonderful culture.

Seems like a fairly 2010s attitude: "This cause is so very, very important! It's in the news and everything! Oh wait, a month has passed, and I've forgotten everything about it. Carry on." When did political movements become trends? And can we go back?

I don't even know who Keith Olbermann is but let me explain what he was doing -> Tomi Lahren uses her strict 'patriotism' as an excuse to be as offensive and topically relevant. Olbermann is showing the obvious flaw in her logic by pointing out that she is disrespecting the American flag according to her own ideologies. That doesn't mean he has to adhere to those ideologies himself. It's like a vegan saying they don't eat animal products because it's cruel and bad for the environment, and then they go and eat products that use unsustainable palm oil (which destroys habitats of orangutans and is bringing them closer to the threat of extinction, thus both killing orangutans and causing mass de-forestation). A meat-eater could point out the flaw in that ideology because the vegan is claiming to be against something they're actually contributing to. That doesn't make the meat eater a hypocrite.

Turns out americans, including the right, doesn't view wearing flag-related stuff to be offensive. As per usual the left fabricates some bullshit to use as an argument because arguing based on facts will never work for them.

I live in Barcelona. A lot of my Catalan friends say they want independence because they are oppressed by Spain but feel fatigued by everything that is happening and doubt they will ever get it. Even after all this.
