Yeah she knew that the only place she wouldn't be live harrased to play Me! was a country that is very happy and forgiving like Brazil (specially because the last time she went was fucking more than 10 years ago in the Red tour), I live here too and I saw A LOT of people really mad that "the treath of Me! (announced like it was a bomb) as a surprise song could be, and was released on Brazil" and at the same time people got united to sing the "not soo wanted" song cause it was a special moment for people who got to the show.

For me (hee-hee-heeee), the song is born from insecurity. In a way, it eerily echoes the messages from 'You're Losing Me' in that her lover sees her as a possibly difficult person to love/be with. The author has a lower sense of self worth so is desperately doing anything they can to be seen as valid and worthy of love. Like, "yeah I know that you sigh whenever I want to spend time with you because I'm feeling insecure and that you're probably getting fed up of me BUT I'm actually a really fun person and not a burden to be with!? Like look I love rainbows and unicorns - I'm so much more than the bad things you only seem to bring up about me!! If you spend time with me then I can make sure we absolutely have fun because I'm actively trying to show you all the things :)' Also, the pandemic happened within a year of it's release where we as a society started to look at media in a different way and no longer wanted a rose-tinted view on life and instead craved/seeked more authentic realism. When looked at from that perspective, the fun in your face pop sound it has comes across as ingenuine and also explains why people have grown to dislike it more. We grew tired of 'just dance and everything will be okay!!!' and wanted to be more honest with our feelings because the reality is that things aren't okay and we're not going to pretend like they are. I hope that makes sense :')

For me, the difference between ME! and Anti-Hero is night and day. ME! is so un-personal, where Anti-Hero feels like a stark look into her own depression, which makes me go "I will also stare directly at the sun but not the mirror, excuse me while I sob." Even Shake It Off is more specific than ME! Taylor Swift is such a compelling artist because of how personal her music is. She didn't write a song about loss and grief, she wrote a song about losing HER grandmother, which makes me sob thinking about mine because it's more relatable and real than any generic loss song could ever be. ME! isn't a bad song, but when it has to stand up to the rest of her discography, it just falls flat. Don't get me wrong, I know every word and I'll bop in the grocery store. It's just not on my regular playlist.

That’s actually really cool. As a teacher, I’ve noticed that she does a lot of things to make even her more mature songs kid friendly. For example, most of the non the non-explicit versions of her songs actually replace the removed words with real lyrics instead of just muting the words. “Flexing like a VEGAS acrobat.” “Like an UNHINGED outlaw.” “Your contrarian WIT.” Etc. Even in Vigilante S*, she changes the final “on my vigilante s* again” to a really cool, extended, stylized “on my vigilante SHHHHHHHH! again.” These changes make the non-explicit songs just as fun to sing along with as the unedited versions. As someone who works with kids, these little considerations go a long way and I really really respect that. ❤

I loved the video, but I always felt like the song felt extremely fake. I actually really loved the lower production sadder version. It speaks more to the vulnerability we often feel when dating someone. I think mainly it just felt very fake the way it was sung. I never really had a problem with the "spelling is fun" line. In fact, I think I liked it better with it in. Perhaps, I'm just not a very "campy" person. Or maybe I'm just not a "confetti" type of person.

Genuinely, I really loved paper rings. One of my favorites. Your comment had made me reflect on my thoughts about Me! This might be more a reflection about me. Only Brazil could deliver the love that Taylor deserves, even not being fan favorite, and people joking the entire year that the only SS left would be Me! . Everyone was so exhausted, it was the crowd of the postponed concert due heat wave, plus most of people in that specific date, got tickets because of Lover Fest cancelled, in Brazil there were a pre sale to Lover Festers (bc we weren’t refunded at the time and our credits were few months to expire) . The timing of the release was the biggest turn off, at least for me and people in my circle. Which includes a couple Taylor fans (As adults in their 30s, they resent the term “Swiftie”) We went into lockdown shortly after it came out, and nobody was trying to hear that obnoxiously optimistic, manufactured pop sound during that time. It just didn’t feel appropriate for such a grim period. And when you hold it up to the rest of Taylor’s discography, it falls flat. The writing is immature in comparison to her own early work. It’s not the standard people who enjoy her work are used to, so naturally they’re not gonna like it.

I wish this song met higher approval with Swifties and Sinners alike. I think both fan bases (which many were both) expected something “Unbelievably poetically relatable” (Taylor’s Super power) and “a PHENOMENAL Vocal performance” (Brendon’s Super power) when news of this collab was released, and the anticipation of those things just rose and rose to an unreal high. So when the fans were met with the song/video that highlighted the joyful, charismatic, and animated characteristics of both Brendon and Taylor with impressive but standard vocals the fans felt let down. Truth is the pair couldn’t have been better matched to highlight those aspects of themselves. Brendon has always been very theatrical with his art, Taylor has always had a very animated/performative aspect to hers, and they truly brought the VERY BEST of those qualities out in each other. Now, if Taylor could persuade Brendon to come out of retirement (even for just a moment) and give the fans that “Unbelievably poetically relatable song with phenomenal vocals” Swifties and Sinners would LOSE THEIR MINDS with joy and delight!!

"a song that sounds like it was manufactured in a lab to do well in the pop charts" THATS IT FOR ME! at least for me, it felt like a parody of love songs. the fight in the beginning that is resolved by just loving each other too much, the over the top effects and saccharine lyrics, and (this might just be me) their forced smiles and happiness in the video really put me off. i was really waiting for the moment they'd turn back on each other since taylor swift is a very popular artist (not the kind to make parodies as far as i know) and there was no punchline in the video or song, it came off as fake and disingenuous. i think the fact im not a big taylor fan and havent kept up with her "deeper" projects and mostly know about her from radio singles doesnt really help :/ (also i know theres no such thing as being truly honest as an artist in the public eye, but the issue is more whether or not your audience can suspend their disbelief and buy into the fun or the story youre trying to tell.)

I loved this video format! I think the reason people dislike this song is not its tone but the way it's impersonal and VERY generic sounding musically and production wise. It truly sticks out as a sore thumb in Taylor's discography, she has many humorous and lighthearted songs in her discography that aren't as disposable and unlikable as this one. Personally, I can't find a good melodic line in this song. Actually, I dont think there is one element done nicely. It really is a case of sounding rough, and "camp" doesn't excuse something half baked, there are many well-made fun songs out there. "Poster Girl" by Hannah Diamond, for example, has the childlike tone and direct simple lyrics that could be considered "cringe" but has lovely melodies and such emotional depth that makes it outstanding.

ME! is my favourite song on Lover and has been a favourite for me ever since it released, I only learnt about all of the hate directed at the song within the past 2 years and I don't understand it because her most successful album was 1989 which was a pop album with similar upbeat repetitive songs which fans always ranked highly such as welcome to new york which is another 'cheesy' song. I feel like the people who hate ME! must just be miserable because the song is so fun and cheery that it's endearing to listen to a song all about self love in a society that is overly critical about themselves and often self-deprecating. Brendon and Taylor have long been fans of one another so it was amazing to see them collab and for it to be so genuine, and you could tell they enjoyed working together so much which was really refreshing to see in the music industry. As always Brendon delivered amazing vocals and nobody is claiming that the song is deep and a lyrical masterpiece it's simply there to inject fun and be a little playful. Taylor didn't appear to lose fans when her music took a different direction during folklore so I don't understand why the fans didn't welcome the beginning of Lover with the same grace. I often find myself quoting Je suis calm and whenever the song comes on my mood immediately brightens up and I gotta dance around so the song is definitely a success for me.

I love Taylor's music mostly because of her lyrics, her storytelling and that they often have a deeper meaning Maybe ME! doesn't fulfil any of these criteria and maybe ME! wasn't the best choice as a lead single but it's still not a bad song. ME! is fun, full of colour, cringy lyrics that don't take themselves too seriously and just spreads good vibes. Is it Taylor's best song? I don't know, everyone has to decide that for themselves. Is it a skip for you? Fine that's understandable with more than 200 songs. loved this video! contrary to your sentiment, i watched this because i LOVE me! when she announced & released it, my friend and i were going through a huge panic phase and were soooo excited for this collaboration. i was not on taylor swift social media, so i didn't even know people hated this song (and lover the album apparently) until 2020. i also remember being so confused when i didn't hear the spelling is fun line anymore bc i listened to lover a lot on CD and it wasn't on it either even on release day. one point i disagree on is i think it was a good lead single and if the lover album rollout had been slightly stronger, it wouldn't have gotten so much heat. this song is just so fun and unserious and that is OKAY, she literally said it's what makes her HER so every time i see people hate on it, i go stream it because it deserves better also your me he heeees were taking me OUT LMAO

I listened to the live version and the audience shouting spelling is fun was so cool! I wish the line was still in there and it would have been so iconic to see this song performed at loverfest

I don't care what anyone says, this is one of Taylor's coolest videos. It's very pleasing to look at. ME! is like Shake It Off for me... I'm not looking out for it but I will listen to it when I'm listening to the album or on shuffle because it's FUN!

I know every album, and every song. However, people I know irl, say that my opinion isn't valid cause I love ME! It's so annoying to me, that everyone now days is all "do what you want, don't listen to what people say, love your style of music," etc. But I've been made fun of by people in my community for liking a song. It's my least favorite thing about this community.

Imagine if she did an acoustic version of it, that would be super popular

I don't know if the implication of the section about the "ME! jumpscare" is that she didn't play it on The Eras Tour but that's what it seemed like to me so I'm just here to say she played it as a surprise song in Brasil (basically 'cause brazilians had been joking about her taking so long to come to the country ME! would be the only surprise song left to play). It was a cheeky moment and got memed pretty heavily among brazilian fans.

i think an important aspect of why ppl hate this song is also bc the song about being unique and one of a kind is incredibly generic and therefore completely negates it's own concept

“They old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Cause she’s dead.” I think that’s the reason that the song was initially hated, even though it was popular. It was like she was backpedaling from her previous album

Honestly, I don’t think it needs to be stripped down to have that interpretation because that was very much my original interpretation of it. The ‘and there’s a lot of cool girls/lame guys’ always felt kind of desperate? Not quite desperate but that’s the closest word coming to mind. Like - I know there are a lot of ‘better’ people out there, but I’m just as unique. And then I still have my life together enough that there are ‘worse’ people out there as well

Ok, but those credits tho. ❤ Love this video! I don’t hate Me! but I definitely groan a bit when it comes on and skip it half the time. But if I saw her play it in concert you know I’d be singing like it’s my favorite song.

I LOVE this song. It is one of my favorites. There isn't anything in the song that can be criticised. I saw the title of your video and thought ... there is someone who didn't like Me ... ? ... how could this be ... e e eee ? I love your video. You are great at telling this story and have a great voice. Taylor Swift writes the most incredible lyrics. It comes so easy to her. There will be another like her ... er er errr ... e ee eee.

People don’t like it because it’s impersonal and sounds like it belongs in a disney original movie. I’ve been a super fan since speak now came out in 2010, but miss Taylor has some misses sometimes lmao. I love her songs about struggling with insecurities, but ME is just not good lol. It’s okay to not rave over everything she’s ever made, lots of modern swifties hate her first two albums.

This is definitely near the bottom of my Best TS Songs list. It’s because it sounds like it belongs on Sesame Street. I used to love Sesame Street, but I was 6 years old. And that was more than 50 years ago. I like your version better. ❤

Chat & Reacts have been BEGGING for a piano version of Me on the Eras tour all year long! They were a little disappointed when she did it on guitar. They have been championing this song for awhile, and how actually vulnerable it is for Taylor when you listen to the lyrics. I personally love this song, but its definitely not my favorite, and I don't think it should have been the lead single. I love the music video too! I think in general, Lover gets crapped on a lot by the fandom, but I think it would not be that way at all if Loverfest had happened. Sometimes you have to see her performing them live to really get it. Rep tour definitely did that!

It kind of just makes me (he heeeee) sad that the swifties feel they’re entitled to make Taylor change decisions she already finalized, things that are artistic expression choices she’s already made, that she’s not exactly asking for our opinions on… like, sure, she wants us to like her music…but I just don’t think she should have to give into pressure from her own fan base to change things like the “spelling is fun!” lyric.

I’m sure this came up on my feed because I am someone who has always hated this song from the moment I heard it and until today. However I loved listening to your points and really love the sound of your version …. I’ll probably still always skip it when it comes on but I maybe can understand WHY she made such an atrocity lol And for the record I DONT have anything against fun silly songs just this one rubs all the wrong ways 😂 I actually think it’s the HOO HOO HA HAs that really make me cringe inside 😅 in your version the slightly softer oohs are just much more bearable. Anyway, this was the interesting deep dive I didn’t know I needed

That song got hate?? It’s such a good song! I’m a new swiftie so I didn’t know about this. I love the whole Lover album, even the songs people say are “cringy” like Paper Rings and I Forgot That You Existed. Lover is such a good pop vibe album and I’m really glad she made something different and high-beat 💖 I don understand why people need to openly hate on songs that they don’t like, just don’t listen to them 🤷🏻♀️

ME! is such a happy song, SHE was happy recording and making it. i will NEVER EVER understand how people hate it. its such a joyful, self-hyping, happy and probably exotic song. its an amazing song, "im the only one of me, baby thats the fun of me" i think ME! is a self-love and self-confidence song, it tells you its OKAY to have flaws, youre not perfect, but youre unique.
@taylorcatalana178311 ай бұрын
Honestly I like ME! so much better in the context of the album than as a standalone single. Coming right after Afterglow, after a big fight, saying to meet someone in the afterglow, jumping right into the utter silliness of I PROMISE THAT YOU’LL NEVER FIND ANOTHER LIKE ME just really works and gives it the tone it’s really going for/you’re describing. I feel the same way about Look What You Made Me Do. In the middle of the album, when you’re vibing, it just works and you can lean into it. But both of these songs were just jarring and disappointing lead singles when you’re just so stoked for a new Taylor album and get these (even knowing they probably won’t match the rest of the album). On Lover it was just especially tough when it came out and we all as a society went, WHAT, Cruel Summer was RIGHT THERE.

but the fact is most of taylor’s happy songs are hated because they are happy, like stay stay stay, shake it off or (less often, but still) 22, and it is kinda sucks cause what’s wrong with her being happy and make happy songs 😭
