Southwest Airlines is one of the most unique airlines in the world. Southwest Airlines’ innovative approach to a pretty conservative industry is remarkable. The Southwest Airlines business model is unlike anything else in the industry - although many other airlines have tried to copy Southwest Airlines.
From Southwest Airlines’ unusual approach to boarding to their intense focus on on-time performance to their transfarency, Southwest Airlines is a special airline to fly. I was so lucky to travel with Southwest Airlines to Tampa for a very special reason (subscribe so you don’t miss the next video about it!!)
In this video, we’ll get Gary Kelly's take on Southwest Airlines and also explore just why so many people are obsessed with this airline with Southwest Airlines’ CEO, Gary Kelly.
I’ll also share some tips and tricks for making your Southwest Airlines experience as pleasant as it can be while sharing my own experience on Southwest Airlines from Raleigh, NC to Tampa, Florida.

meRyanP let me just say... if you’re lucky enough to have a “passenger of size” on your flight, sit next to them because Most of the time you’re going to get extra room. Southwest makes people buy a second seat, but refund it after travel so it’s wonderful. Everyone wins. Just wish they had some extra leg room section, and sold food on the plane for longer flights (transcon for example)

The airline attendant saw me trying really hard not to cry out loud. she came over and we talked. When we arrived to LAX and I exited the plane, there was a SW rep there with my returning ticket and a 15.00 food voucher until the next flight back to HOU was ready to leave. I have had the honor of flying for Southwest Airlines for nearly 27 years. It has gone by incredibly fast! Our beloved founder Herb Kelleher passed away this past January. It has been akin to how I felt when my own father passed away in 2009. The feelings of love and loss are profound, but Herb, like my father, taught all of us at Southwest so very much. Mainly, to be kind, have a sense of humor, work hard but play harder, and always be willing to help others. Gary Kelly has been an outstanding leader and example for us all here at Southwest. I know of no one better prepared to lead our company forward than him. Thanks Gary!

Southwest's 737 was the first plane I ever flew on, back in 2007, it was awesome but I did leave some toys I bought in Orlando on the plane when I got back so I was sad. But I think the magic of South West was that it was the go to airline for vacationers in the US, especially for kids with it's bright colour scheme and cool goody bag you can get if you ask for one over the phone like my mom did for my 6th birthday, it even came with inflatable model planes to throw around!

I discovered something very interesting back in 2018, when I needed to fly from Las Vegas to Seattle. The trip would be a budget affair, so I started checking the usual low fare airlines, Spirit, Frontier and Southwest. I needed to check one bag and had a carry-on. IF I was going to fly with Spirit with just a "personal item" the fare from Las Vegas to Seattle was $104 RT, but adding a carry-on and a checked bag brought that cost up to $155, and EVERY single flight from Las Vegas to Seattle on Frontier had at LEAST an EIGHT HOUR layover in Denver. NO direct flights, so I didn't even bother with figuring their price. Turns out Southwest was $136 RT including the TWO checked bags and no charge for the carryon.. Three guesses which airline I used..

I’ve flown with them once; LGA-DAL and I slept for the literally the entire flight, but I will say that the “no change fee” definitely came in handy! I was in the hospital literally 12 hours before my flight and was able to rebook free of charge for a flight later that same day, hassle free!

I think you summed up why people love Southwest. No change/cxl fee, bags fly free, free streaming and tv, bigger seats, and the same space for everyone. No other airline even comes close. It’s these perks that give loyalty that no other airline can compete with.

Jeb and Sam Chui, my 2 favorite frequent flyers, Love seeing both, his and your posts. As you said, been awhile since you have been on WN, Diamond Delta, million miler I's where your at. You spent some time stating all the things Southwest is not and has not. 40 to 50 min turn times are now the Norm. and they (according to flightaware) are often 1 or 2 daily in late and cancelled flights Worldwide. It's been a tough year for WN, From the Max issues, to labour disputes slowing things down, many last min cancelled flights with no explanation, and no auto rebook, by reservations, passengers are on their own to try to get another seat, before others beat you too it. They are no longer the low fare leader, many are lower, especially last min. IE, last min on Delta first class to BNA to PDX DL $401.00, First Class, WN $569.20, Anytime fare. They do many things well, but this year have fallin behind, folks LUV them and the simplicity of everything, hopefully they can get it together with the soon, with the return of the MAX. And even with a Biz Select Fare you could be 20 or 25 to board with all the pre boards, and Thru PAX, At least not a "C" for center seat, but 5 or 6 rows back for sure. Wish they would add advance seat selection, as everyone else has, so it would not matter when your board, and pre boards won't matter. I'm a 50 plus times a year (A list preferred) flyer with Southwest, so are hoping they can get back on track in 2020. They deserve the best, great employees, great biz model, still made money this year even with the challenges. But I miss Herb...

Love, love, love SWA ! No baggage fees for two checked bags and two carry-ons. Quick boarding. Simplicity. No change fees. I recall maybe changing my flight maybe 3 or 4 times in the past several years of flying with Southwest and only once paying a fare difference of $35 dollars and another time the fare difference was only a few dollars and the ticket agent just waived it. And of course always a credit to use on another flight if one has to cancel. Love the low fares too. So lucky to live in the Austin Texas market where the fares can be ridiculously low for flights to LAX, SFO & OAK where I have family and friends. I'm heading to Los Angeles in late March for $119 RT and that's on 2 non-stop flights. Purchased that flight when I was out there for Xmas and New Years. I just happen to be showing one if my best friends how to use the Southwest reservation site and saw the low fare calendar. Snapped that low fare puppy up like nothing and found another low fare for my friend to come out next week for the SXSW Music, Film & Tech Festival. It was only $137 RT with a transfer in PHX. I bought the ticket for my buddy for a Xmas gift since got laid off from his job at the end of Dec 2019. Hopefully he'll hang out here in Austin for awhile after the fest and maybe find a new job here. If that happens I'll have Southwest airlines to thank as my friend would never let me give him a plane ticket over $200, but for $137 RT, even my friend says that was too good a deal to pass up. THANK YOU SOUTHWEST !!

First time I flew them this past summer, ATL - BWI. The flight came in from Denver about 20 mins late and we planned on leaving half an hour late. No big deal, I thought. Upon boarding, there was a woman who kept walking up and down the isle cause she couldn’t find a seat. The annoyed sounding flight attendant asked on the intercom that if there was an open seat next to anyone, if they could press the flight attendant call button so the woman could take a seat. There was an open seat next to someone, but the person never hit the call button due to his selfishness. Because of that woman, we left a few minutes later now, and we had to sit short of the runway for about 20 minutes due to a storm that rolled in. We took off over an hour late. The flight was too “bumpy” (though not really) and the flight attendants didn’t serve us any food or drinks at all on this hour and a half long flight, which is actually not good at all because you need to stay hydrated up in the air. Plus there was a crying baby the whole time, but I know that wasn’t the airlines fault. One flight attendant was really nice and he laughed with my mom when her dad was annoying her. But the other flight attendant was so demanding and crabby. Landed an hour late into Baltimore. That was the first, and honestly my last southwest flight. I know the weather and that woman wasn’t their fault, but I hate that there are no assigned seats, and no entertainment screens at all. This is for sure a cheap airline, and I don’t plan on flying it again. I’m sticking with Delta, because we all know they’re much better.

The reason Southwest has not invested in Airbus is because they like to keep it stream line. If you start added different types of aircrafts it drives cost up, and complicates day to day procedures. Its much easier and cheaper to work on 2 different aircrafts, than it would to work on 4 or 5 different types of aircrafts.

It has a lot to do with timing. I work for Southwest in their call center and some people think of they wait until closer to departure that the flights will get cheaper, quite the opposite. More advance notice the cheaper the flights and the sales go live on Tuesdays so that's usually the best time to search fares
@sjanovSjanov

west max it’s significantly cheaper to operate an airline with a single fleet type, when you calculate, employee training costs, maintenance costs, parts. the employees only have to get familiar with one fleet type, I don’t think the Max’s being on the ground is hurting them as badly as the airlines that have them are whining about, south west has well over 700 airplanes and have merely 30 Max’s, is 30 planes hurting the profits Unlikely.

Totally agree. Southwest flights are way more expensive out of philly than any other airline. Also - I had pretty rude flight attendants on both legs of my only round trip SWA flight.
