#1 Taxes, taxes, taxes. Also…the insane costs of registering vehicles, much higher than normal insurance costs, one of the few states that will tax SS income, one of the only states that will tax out-of-state trust incomes, and on and on on the financial side. Your $ does not go as far in NE. That’s why you see so many vehicles in town registered to South Dakota (look up that loophole). And before you try to tell me I’m wrong, talk to an accountant, a CPA, a wealth manager, and a financial advisor. There’s a lot to like about living in Nebraska, but it is the pickpocket state.

Thanks for putting the video together! The other thing to be aware of is that the school system is very overhyped. it’s good but it’s not world-class as they advertise. Look at the spend per student versus other states and look at the results. Omaha is extraordinarily expensive to live in because it has to subsidize the rest of the state. I was born and raised in New York. Same parallel. Upstate New York pays for the city. If you’re thinking about moving here, do the math and talk to some experts. You will be in for sticker shock. All the best!

THIS. I would love a video explaining why and how Nebraska has made itself one of the highest taxed states to live in. The car registration is a highway robbery- it’s insane. Zero reason for that. Restaurant tax, the double taxing, property and income tax. I’m from west Texas and Nebraska is so ridiculously heavy on taxes and I can take the argument that there’s not a lot of areas for revenue generation for the state. It’s limited but the car registration is completely out of this world. I remember reading that Nebraska increased taxes to get out bankruptcy but they never went back after their financial position improved. Of course. What I don’t understand is how everyone is ok with it here. I grew up paying $60 to get registration and inspection done. I pay $600 here. Make it make sense
@Naniamania3
@Naniamania3 5 ай бұрын
@@chase.austinindeed! We’ve never paid what we pay here in vehicle registration, insurance, etc., and I’ve lived in many of the “most expensive cities” in the US. Recently we moved my 100-year-old father to a memory care across the river to Council Bluffs. We moved him to Omaha from NY (where I’m originally from) when my mom died in 2015. His money came from his accounts in New York. Nebraska is the only state that taxes out of state money the way he was being taxed. After getting hit with an $11,000 tax bill last year for a 100 year old man with dementia, we moved him to Council Bluffs. He will pay zero taxes in 2024. Check out what’s going on currently with the mayor’s budget. It’s insanity and then there’s Pillen’s “plan” to lower property taxes without actually having a plan. All he’s doing is shuffling the deck chairs. He’ll make up the money someplace else with other taxes. But make no mistake…his farm out West will be a beneficiary of his new “plan”.

Being a young person myself, I considered Omaha as one of the states to move to. Personally, the more low-key a city, the better. Being able to comfortably afford things is a major bonus and yes, it was a massive adjustment moving from LA, but I consider the pace to be quite nice, especially considering traffic isn't nearly as dense and everything seems a lot more tranquil (when it's not storming)

Yes, free beauty and activities! This is what I miss from where I moved from. There are no beaches, foothills, mountains, hollers and the river… nothing even close to the Mississippi in many areas for good fishing, skiing or little coves/islands to park your boat on a beach like area and swim around. No free fun beautiful activities … really at all. The humidity, not like there’s a Padre Island to help with that issue. Winters aren’t like Colorado, sunny snowy skiing days, more like dirty freezing windy gloom. Not like Colorado where it cools down at night with no humidity. So the best you get is a short stormy spring and a short fall … this can vary either way too. My husband is born and bred Nebraska, all over 100 year homesteaders! So this is why I live in Nebraska … you just make the best of it.

Love, love CA. Weather in CA is incredible and people are accepting of others. It is simply a BEAUTIFUL state. CA’s economy rivals that of many countries--a thriving $3.5 TRILLION. Compare that to NE GDP of $150 Billion. CA’s 40 million people is a lot of people but let’s talk about Nebraska’s many problems caused somewhat by its rural/urban split and that 2/3ds of the 2 million people living in the state live in 2 cities on the east side of the state? The failure in traffic planning and retrofitting roads post-neighborhood development is just sad. It’s true people drive on two-lane roads without shoulders for years after purchasing in new development. 20-25 yrs is a long time. And talk about the inability to get ANYWHERE without a traffic light every few feet. I mean, try 6 in a one mile stretch! Traffic frustration is a real problem and drivers are horrific and dangerous to others on the road. Nebraska has its problems …including intolerance of those perceived to be ‘different’, the failure to enforce traffic laws for the driving public, and ‘noise’. TEXTING while driving--one of the most incomprehensible violation of public safety. And let’s not forget, the LARGE (gigantic) pickup trucks threatening to run over the top of you on the only expressway/ and limited interstate system. These horrifically large (and loud) vehicles also race through neighborhoods above the 25 mph speed limits violating noise statutes. So yes CA has problems but let’s look in our own backyard before noting another state that has a lot going for it. Just saying. Acknowledge our own problems before suggesting another state has more.

This is a great and accurate list David. I would also mention the wind under the category of weather. Omaha, like a lot of Great Plains cities, is often quite windy. Almost to the point of annoyance. Additionally, not a lot of vegetation, such as trees. I noticed a striking difference once I moved to Northern Virginia, where we have a plethora of trees and wooded areas, even in the suburbs. Also, there isn't enough cleaning/upkeep of the highways. Always a lot of dirt and debris piling up along the barricade dividers. And in general, the city streets are not very well taken care of. They allow them to get in considerable disrepair before a resurfacing.

As military family we just got an order to move to Elkhorn/ Omaha. Our report day is early week of March - means we have to leave Orlando, fl very soon for settling. I’m nervous about moving up there in the middle of winter with my 3, 6 years old. I hope this move we will have more luck finding houses and less crisis comparing to Orlando, fl 2 year ago which people started to move down to fl and we can’t competed to get a place. Our station before fl was Kirksville, mo - we were stuck in the hotel in the middle of winter for almost 2 months because housing crisis after covid hit. For Omaha, this will be our last move. As wife/mom, I wish we don’t have to move in the middle of winter. I love outwest but I dread to pull my 6 years old kindergarten out of school in middle of school year. They (military) often say family comes first but with my 15 years of experience as a spouse I don’t feel that way.

Its a self sustained economy, island city, ppl are the friendliest most welcoming, lots of stuff to do and generally feel safe everywhere i go. Its nice cuz (in California especially) there's not really shady characters randomly walking around everywhere that i feel like i gotta be looking over my shoulder just getting a coffee at Panera. I had to move to Omaha from the panhandle of Nebraska because my house burned down and have hated almost everyday I have lived here in Omaha. I went from a conservative part of our state to a liberal part. Crazy is the difference between the two. Homeless are a huge problems and cops that don’t do anything to people who break the law. I live in downtown and it gets scarier every week. There is a stabbing or shooting almost everyday in Omaha. It’s so common for homeless to break into our building and nothing is done. Most chat with themselves and some I have watched fist fight with themselves. Every crazy driver lives here so I don’t know where you drive but I think not one understand a four way stop and clearly they have never read a driving manual. It is always common for people to hit the gas on yellow lights and it never matters how long it’s been yellow resulting in people going when red more often than not. I will be moving as soon as possible to a place where crazy is not the norm. But when you remove God from society that’s hard to find.

Well, the cons are: 1. no direct flights to most places, so you either have to a. pay over $200-$300+ for a flight anywhere b. drive to denver or chicago for a hub c. limit your travels to iowa/kansas or other bordering states. 2. Everything closes early except quick trip, and they are not on every corner. 3. Very conservative (I'll leave that there.) 4. IT'S TOO COLD. The cold weather season seems hardly bearable if you've just moved here. Natives don't like it, but they gotten use to it. It can get disrespectfully cold here, seriously. 5. The used car market seems overpriced to me 6. Not alot to do compared to big cities. PROS: 1. Nice looking people 2. Lots of interracial couples 3. Mostly everything is affordable (housing, buses, groceries, etc) 4. Seems to be a church on every corner. 5. Good drivers/traffic flow 6. Sensible people for the most part (especially when compared to big cities)

A lot of these are spot on. The airport is small and doesn’t offer a lot of destinations. You end up connecting through Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, or Denver to get to most places. And there is nowhere decent to eat or grab a drink when you’re waiting for your flight. Unless you only like Scooters or grocery store grade deli food. The last time I was in town, I was surprised that nearly EVERY restaurant closes at 9:00 p.m. I guess after living in a bigger city for several years I forgot that. I definitely appreciate being able to head out at 11:00 p.m. or midnight for dinner and still having good options. The lack of activities and amenities versus bigger cities is a drag. No major league sports teams, theater/entertainment districts, amusement parks, major attractions, etc. Once you’ve done the zoo and the Old Market, your options dwindle fast. However, Omaha is a very nice, clean, manageable city where you can have an easy, peaceful life. It’s an affordable and pleasant place to raise a family (Other than the weather. That does suck). Big cities, small cities, small towns. There are trade offs for all of them.

They have chain resturants in Cali but not a single Runza. Why would anyone live where there were no Runza? Out of the 8 million people and a few live people in Cali why? True Southern California has the Dodgers but you can always jump on a plane if you want to see a real game or even turn on the TV. I prefer living out of the big city of Oamha such as 30 miles North or for you Southern Cali folks about a 15 minute drive.

Taxes are the #1 problem in omaha. Nothing else is even close. That's not true it doesn't get cold until January. Also, it's not true it doesn't get hot in omaha. The food is not true at all, there is all kinds of metatranian restaurants the Greek islands, and orsis, all different types of Asian restaurants, last week I seen an eitheopan and Honduran restaurant. Half true there are no mountains but there is lots of lakes around. Fishing and hunting is pretty good in nebraska and Iowa. Shopping not a problem you can get anything online. Sports is true they kinda missed out on pro sports, storm chasers is great but it's not an MLB team, they are triple a. But if you want those things going to a Kansas city or Denver a few times a year wouldn't be to difficult. Bars are OK but not the same as new York or Miami. There are casinos in CB and they are huge but they are not bigger than Vagas casinos. Lots of concerts and comedy shows come threw omaha and Lincoln. If I was going to realistically add something to omaha it would be theme park. That's the worst slogan I have ever heard and it's not true. Plus every place is not for everybody. Nebraska is more like somthing for everyone. From what I have seen that's what people like about omaha, it's big but it's not that big. New York has 9 million people, Dallas fort worth 7 million, KC and Denver are 4 to 6 million. That is to many people.
