not that different but they are pretty different, domestic rats are kept in clean homes and pet stores compared to wild rats who live in sewers in dirty cities. rats do carry diseases that can be spread to people (not the plauge but still like rabies, rat bite fever, salmonella etc). don't go and try to make a new york city rat a pocket puppy lol.
@SwampyBoy47617 сағат бұрын
@@daphneglasurus7886nah they are pretty different, pet rats carry barely any diseases, wild rats can carry all sorts of diseases, this is mainly because pet rats are domesticated from brown rats, also called Norway rats (even though they are actually from Asia), which weren’t the rats that carried the fleas with the bubonic plague, those rats were black rats, for some reason brown rats were resistant to fleas, but most of the rats in the us are brown rats, however even so there are a large amount of visual differences between domesticated and wild brown rats, such as the color, wild specimens are usually a greyish brown color, while domesticated ones have a wide range of colors, they also have a range of behavioral differences, and also have a smaller body, longer tail, bigger ears, and smaller sharper facial features.

Wildies are just as sweet as domestics when they're not conditioned to be afraid of everything. The personality of domestics is the personality of wildies minus the strong fear response. Humans just very rarely get to see the sweet side of wildies as they usually only express it to other rats, but it's their true nature. The only thing humans have done to the personality of domestics is to remove the fear that's necessary for survival in the wild, everything else is done by nature via millions of years of evolution into hypersocial colony animals.
@kavalogue2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. She can attack "the public" and our "tiny pea brains" all she wants. But all she's doing is hoisting up the belief that everyone is dumb and Hates rats. Literally pulled from thin air just to make herself feel superior. I've owned rats and know plenty who also did,. And its a common thing to genuinely get to a place where you think your better than other people because you think everyone sees them as dirty balls of disease when the truth is that's how you think everyone sees them. When people say "I don't like disease carrying rats" they're talking about rats that are carrying diseases. Not caged pets. You absolute fool.
@TechSupportDave2 жыл бұрын
@@kavalogue you're reading into it too much. Also, I'm pretty sure nobody likes disease and things that could potentially kill them. So either people enjoy stating the obvious, or they're actually talking about rats in general, because they hold misinformed opinions about an animal. I'd wager both options are just as likely. You have zero idea how many people aren't aware of the fact that cats are Carnivores. This kind of seemingly-common knowledge does fly by people. And I think calling these people pea-brained makes complete sense in such case. You're making it seem like you think "pea-brained" is some strong term, when it's not. Snowflake much?

I remember I had to chose a pet for a science project in highschool, but I couldn't decide what I wanted. By the time the deadline came about I had procrastinated and never made up my mind. My science teacher (who became an amazing friend and mentor) had a batch of baby rats just ready to be away from their mom, so he let me take 2 of them for the experiment. That was probably the best outcome from procrastination in my entire life. Those rats became my entire world for the next 3 years. It's insane how smart and fun they are. I taught them all kinds of tricks, how to run mazes, to come when called by name, even to stand or sit. They really are almost exactly like tiny dogs, and I always carried them around in my front hoodie pocket, so the "pocket puppy" nickname is pretty perfect. I had never been so devastated in my life as I was when they died, but it was a really good life lesson and a great experience. I personally think rats make some of the best possible pets. Really great first pet to teach kids about responsibility and caring for something other then themselves.

Fun fact:the rats did not carry the plague the fleas did and jumped on humans
@notNajimi7 ай бұрын
Yes! And fleas can be carried by any hairy mammal, not just rats or rodents. Fleas are a potential plague vector even today, so be careful around wild animals! Pet rats are friends, pests are pests for a reason though

But the rats did carry the fleas that carried the plague. That wasn't their fault, but that's why people see rats as animals that typically carry the plague.
