I was given a couple of rats as a gift once. I'd never considered them as pets, but they won me over with their charm and intelligence. Mine even took great care of each other. One of them got a bit sick, and the other one brought her food and kept her clean and comfortable until she got better.

To those not in the know, Edgar recently passed away. He went in his sleep, and was found by his family in the morning. Rats, unfortunately, do not live very long lives. Most typically only live for about 2 years, 3 if you're really lucky. Edgar made it to a good 2 or so, despite some heart problems. Rest well squish man. EDIT: for clarity, I am not Edgar's owner, just a follower of his family's Instagram account.

Aww my mom got me a rat for Halloween and she was full of surprises and such mischief lol she would always climb on my shoulder and nuzzle herself into my hair and would just go everywhere I went. It wasnt until we had her for a few months then she started to give birth to nine baby rats but unfortunately she ate them due to being stressed out by my sister's cat that knew how to get into my room. In high school a friend's sister gave me the rat they had recently got and couldn't care for anymore.. His name was George, and he turned into my best friend. They're so sweet and so smart. Hi Norma... I like rats too but I've never had the courage to cuddle with them. I feel unsecured about health issues. I am not very informed about this matter. My mind goes straight to the rats in general. I feed birds and I have fun when clever rats pop up from the bushes.How can I get serious informations about...? I mean about the health issues.Is there any respected site where from I can get the right informations and not be afraid of transmitted diseases? It's sounds to you propably ridiculous but this is something that I have to deal with. I would love to overcome this issue. Thank you ❤️

@@veroniqueboulvard6315 If you keep rats as pets, they carry no diseases. Like any dog, cat or rabbit. Especially when you buy them from a breeder or pet shop. Only the free living rats can be dangerous, like all wild animals they can carry pathogens. Rats and mice are more dangerous because they live in our cellars and stables and can spread from there diseases to humans. Other wild animals usually keep their distance but they could make humans sick too if they'd lived closer to us.

SEVEN years! That's wonderful and amazing🥰 My oldest were a white lab rat named Rosie that was to be killed after she was spayed by a veterinary student and my baby Catnip. Catnip was bought as a tiny "pinky" as snake food. My daughter couldn't do it! She usually fed her snake frozen little mice. I pretty much raise her from a little pink blob. They both lived 'til four years old. Unfortunately, neither was bred for a long life, but it was twice as long as I had hoped for❤️ May I ask what breed of rats yours were?
@rosiehawtrey
@rosiehawtrey 2 жыл бұрын
It might be that you kept them together. In some reptiles males will live longer than females (eg chameleons) and I think that's common in mustelidae too because of the draw breeding puts on the body. As for the health issues - as long as they're captive bred they'll be fine and harmless. I'm allergic to cats but nary a problem with rats. Do *not* get them from the wild, they can carry some spectacular diseases that are zoonotic including all three plague varieties (orientalis, medievalis and antiqua). Y.Pestis.medievalis is pretty much confined to Madagascar and be happy about that. 60% fatality rate in humans. There's a Flores giant rat (think trainee black/grey capybara) but I doubt you'll find them as pets. PS if you have dogs in the south western US be aware plague is kicking about and get them checked. Dogs don't get sick but they show an antibody reaction - and you can get it from them. If you see any small mammals acting as if they're drunk, be somewhere else, do not give them a hug, you may well end up looking like a Torchwood extra. Luckily it's more likely the milder orientalis strain.

I had a harness for him, taught him tricks, he would sleep in bed with me (he was huge so I wasn’t worried about crushing him). I miss my little furry albino buddy. Caution to people watching this and wanting to have rats as pets. They make great and wonderful pets and everything this lady said is correct. However, they have short life cycles and its about 50\50 that they develop serious health issues after a year. I loved my little guys, I had rats for about ten years, always kept three, but it weighed on me emotionally because it always seemed that I had a sick one and that dilemma of when to put them down was a constant.

You got that right. We had up to 20, huge cage, many just ran amuk but it was semi-organized chaos. But eventually they got tumors or after 4 years just worn out and died. But smart, maybe you could say clean, but with that many you can't avoid their odor regardless of how well you muck out the cage. They dribble.

I've been told that if you want a pet rat who will likely live a good amount of time and wont developed tumors/health conditions you need to purchase from a breeder, do not go to pet stores. A few years ago my mom purchased a rat from a pet store whom she named Lucy. Unfortanently Lucy passed after 2 years due to very large tumors. From what I've been told, these pet store rats are susceptible to these health conditions because they're so inbred - they arent intended to live very long so they arent kept in high condition.

Yeah, I completely agree. Mine would develop weird neurological problems and had to be euthanized. A biologist friend of mine explained that it was because of inbreeding; the vast majority of rats inherit the same genetic abnormalities.

Rats make for amazing pets and are very smart. They can show empathy which is rare in a lot of animals. They can learn their name, learn routines, recognize voices, learn tricks, etc. They are very amazing pets and once you bond with them, they're your best friends until they pass away. Male rats tend to be more lazy and snuggly + bigger, whilst females tend to be more energetic and more eager to learn tricks (plus smaller.) The _biggest_ downside to having fancy rats is their lifespan. They live 2-3 on average and they are also prone to a lot of health conditions. I still recommend them. They're amazing little guys

I had a pet mouse in the mid 60s I named Him/her "Mickey" Mickey died on Pearl Harbor Day (Dec 7) because my boyfriend hated him and gave him rat poison... I found out ten years later because he told people at a party. They were not amused. I was working in a night club to support him thru college. He was cold in his running wheel which Mickey loved. I would come home after work and cut newspaper squares for his little cage let him run thru my hands for the tunnel game. I always think of him on December 7th. He was just a little brown mouse. I let him free roam in my appartment. I put his food under the radiator in the summer. The cat was always peering under the radiator I would put Mickeys snacks there. I loved that little guy so much, and still do over 60 yrs. later. I'd feed him cherrios and corn flakes, then we'd play. How I wish I had a picture of him.

I had a hamster that was definitely more dog than hamster - he would “protect” us - if my sister and I play fought he would get up on his hind legs and squeak at us until we stopped. He would get between us to break it up. He was incredibly intelligent and knew his name - he didn’t need his cage locked ever - we just let him roam because he loved us soo much he would always just follow us around. My mum, who wasn’t an animal person fell in love with him. She even had us take him on our family trips away - he loved it. When he saw his travelling shoebox he would run up to it and jump in squeaking excitedly - he loved being in the car. He lived 5.5 years and was so loved, We held a proper little funeral for him and buried him under a beautiful cherry tree in an enclosed Japanese garden where there weren’t too many animals could get in, and we made him a little headstone - that was 20 years ago and it still hurts my heart. No one could understand how losing a pet that small meant so much to us all at the time but they didn’t know Jack!

It is understandable why people fear rats. They unfortunately have a bad reputation. And of course people hate and fear mice, and they see rats as bigger, more terrifying versions of mice. And though you don't want wild rats hanging around, the domesticated versions of rats are a pure joy to keep around. They really are one of the most perfect pets. They're like a combination between cats and dogs. Like a cat a rat can be trained to use a litter box - not perfectly, but definitely much better. Like a dog you can train your rat to do many really cute tricks. All three pets are Snuggly. But most of all Rats are full of cute antics. We had our rat cage next to the TV and often found the rats much more entertaining. Sadly, it is their short lifespans that is heartbreaking. For anyone considering a rat as a pet, please do your research. It is vital you understand their healthcare needs and be ready to pay the price - vets are expensive - and not all vets treat exotic pets so make sure you have vet that treats rats in your area! And finally, one thing for sure to know is that eats are social creatures and MUST have at least one other companion...a three pack of rats is even better!

This video shows exactly how destructive a rat can be in a domestic setting. Destroying houseplants and chewing through plastic that's harder than a person's skin an bone is common behavior for the American domesticated rat. They're extremely expensive and only live for a few years. I'm not sure if rabies vaccines are recommended for them, or what kind of diseases can transfer between house pets given the existence of feline HIV. Some people think these vermin are cute while other people use them to feed tarantulas, amgry frogs, big lizards, and snakes as well as to train feline Mousers and game hunting dogs.

@@Bommelle wrong its a very relevant question and with one simple good search u will get these answers: can you keep rats on their own? Rats are social creatures and need the company of other rats. They use their sense of smell to recognise others, finding out about where they've been and what they've been doing. As rats are social animals, they can get depressed and develop abnormal behaviour if they live on their own. Do rats need company? Rats need company of their own kind; it's unfair to keep one alone because they're social animals. Single rats can even become depressed. there are two examples if you still don't believe me look it up yourself but PERSONALY as a rat own MYSELF commenting on a topic you know nothing about not only makes u look stupid but u also help to spread misinformation about rats which leads to unhappy rat lives just because u may have seen one rat happy alone doesn't mean that goes for all rats I can assure u a rat by itself will be a million times happier with a friend and since rats can get depression and suffer from loneliness they can die because of it and that's why I bought 2! the simple things u can learn but a 1 second google search I will happily go into extensive detail if u need further information do better.

@@billsmith7673 I was on a forum completely unrelated to animals, and literally a day ago I came across this random story by someone who had found a nest of baby mice in an inconvenient place, and she somehow happened to come across a wildlife ranger that took them from her, but never told her what he would do with them. She said they squealed when they were picked up. Then they were trying to trap the mother with a glue trap. It's that type of casual dismissal of life I had in mind. People literally treat them like trash, and it makes my heart sink. I've also heard personally from someone whose roommate worked on mice in a lab. I hate to even utter what he told me. These are all precious and individual lives who deserve so, so, so much better. It truly is a crime that humanity can never atone for enough...the scale of cruelty and lives lost in terms of what humans do to animals is a travesty that our species will carry forever as its legacy. It's why it's so important that we good people who "get it" work 100X harder to help animals...the wicked don't sleep. We have to work overtime to undo the damage wherever and whenever we can. We have to find a way to be better at helping than the people who are succeeding at causing the cruelty.

I had one rat when I was young, probably one of the smartest animals I have ever had. One day when my family and I were out, she learned how to get out of her cage, and ended up dragging an entire loaf of bread from the kitchen all the way back to her cage(witch btw was on a table.) She managed to carry it up the table or chair right next to the table, and then figured out that it doesn't fit in her cage. Found her sleeping happily inside the loaf of bread, that was wedged into her cage.

@@veganm8918 all I'm saying is im sure no one became vegan because of comments on youtube. And as I said who's to say they aren't already vegan? I meant no disrespect and I've been there, for years of my life I did exactly that. And I can guarantee that the only people I converted are people in my real life and even then it was only 1 person. I'm surrounded by meat eaters in my family and the only way I've found peace is to accept that I'm making my choice and they are making theirs. The less I have guilt tripped them and argued my points, the more they are actually willing to let me cook them vegan meals and seem interested in it all. It's not our guilt to feel and the positive thing is that finally vegetarianism and veganism is becoming a lot more of a common practice. So sad to hear everyone lost their babies. There really is no better family addition, in my opinion. To answer the question about how long they live, my pair of dumbo eared sisters lived for about 4.5-5 years. I acquired another baby rat by chance I guess, but she was bred as a typical white feeder rat. Old acquaintances of my ex husband bought her to torture her basically (absolutely horrible, I hope they burn in the deepest layer of hell) and I saw her with them one day. She was lethargic, terrified, in bad condition and she was so small, definitely still a baby. The plan the whole time was to rescue her but I needed them to physically hand her to me first. I asked if I could hold her and then once I had her, I told all of them to unkindly FUCK off, I wasn’t giving her back. She only lived about 1.5-2 years but had an amazing life after escaping those sadistic, disgusting cretins. I truly hate them all to this day.

I'm no ecological idiot, but I don't have a big problem with rats in general. I don't like the wild ones in my apartment because of the damage they do, but I'm not freaked out by them either. My neighbor didn't like them at all, and would beat them to death with a golf club when he got the chance. He moved out, and another neighbor moved out, so their rats moved into my place. At first I didn't have a problem with that, as they cleaned up bits of food left around the house. But I finally had to draw the line when one of them climbed on top of me when I was sleeping. I blocked up the holes with rocks and haven't had a problem since. They're more like people than dogs - not a problem unless you get too familiar, then they start taking advantage of you.

That's why I will never get them, they just don't live long enough, and your time with them is soo short. It makes spending time with them all the more important and demanding, because even if you spent only 5 minutes with them a day (which wouldn't be near enough), that would only be a combined total of 2 days and 12 hours actually spent giving them attention for their entire little lives. Even if you devoted an hour to them a day, that would still only be a total of spending an entire month with them. Still not enough. And it's not that they just get old and die, they burn out really fast too, from old age, where they slow down. It's really sad. Humans aren't made for such short term bonds. Not just mentally, but physically. Our brains use chemicals to physically make bonds, associated with memory, and those chemical processes are long term, that's why short term bonds being broken is soo devastating to us.

I once had a pet rat named Feebee who lived to be 4+ years old. Her "bed" was a large aquarium with a mesh lid, filled daily with fresh cedar chips and her chew sticks and other toys. She used to routinely escape from her cage at night (I never learned how), and climb up my bed. I would awake to find her tucked under my chin to cuddle with me in the middle of the night. She loved to sit in my shirt chest pocket while I did my chores and kept me good company. I loved that rat!!!! And I STILL miss her all these years later. I think it is important to point out that Edgar and Fergus are "Fancy Rats", who have been bred as pets. You DON'T want to try to domesticate a wild rat. They are feral, bite and can carry rabies, among other nasties. Fancy rats, on the other hand, are full of charm, playfulness, smart, clean, entertaining and very loving. They do not bite. They are the perfect size apartment pet!

Yep, those "fancy" versions of the Brown Rat make great pets. I had pet rats like this back in the seventies and they were some of the best pets I ever had. The kind that was popular where I lived were called Hooded Rats because they had black, brown, or gray heads with the color extending in a line down the spine and the rest of the body white. For some reason, where I lived they were also called Hooter Rats, maybe due to their squeak. We kept them in large cages, including Habitrails, and mine liked to get out at night (like in this video, they can chew right through even the thickest plastic) so it could sleep with me curled right up next to my neck. Truly one of the most affectionate pets I ever had.

I had a rat just like the grey one. He healed me of a migraine headache by running quickly around my neck, until I finally laughed. Head pain instantly and permanently gone. Never have had one since. When I was away, I found him sleeping in my bed exactly where I slept. He loved me more than humans. He played with cats, and he would walk quickly around my bed each night so I felt protected. These rats are of a DIVINE ORDER! ❤ (p.s. don't use tea tree oil to clean them. Better to use a soft powder (made for animals) to keep fleas off of them. Yours look so healthy and happy! Yay!

This video reminds me of the time I met a rat on the outskirts of a gold course in a forested area with a mate. We seen it was injured so we stabbed it until its guts spilled out and took photos to prove we found a dead rat at the golf course. We came back a few hours later to find some birds eating a way at it lol.

Gotta say, I fell in love with both of these cuties! So glad she did this story! Whether you see a rat on the street, darting out of a field or in a cage in your home…they all breathe, their little hearts beat, and no two are exactly alike which means they each have different personalities. What I mean to say is, they aren’t just a rodent to be eradicated or used in labs. They are genuinely little, furry animals that really do go about their day in joy, go in search of a snack when they’re hungry and nap when they’re tired. Just like humans do. If that doesn’t stand out and make a point and cause your heart to feel, frankly I don’t know what would. ❤️😊💓

Beautifully written and felt. Sorry that too many times rodents are quick to be killed, whether in traps or labs. With the advanced methods of research, I cannot believe that living, breathing critters are still in high demand. Dogs, cats, monkeys, rodents and so very many more species suffer untold horrors. May they finally find freedom. 🐕🐀🐱🐭🐵

yeah, I hate snake owners, they are heartless the way they will just grab a rat/mouse by the tail, swing it against a way once or twice to knock it unconscious so that it doesn't bite the snake before they are about to feed it to
