I think they picked the best possible *commercial* choice. Pharrell is just one of those people that's climbed the social ladder in such a way that people from all walks of life and style can appreciate his future tenure. I'm genuinely excited to see what's to come, but I DO think that a *more experienced* Martine Rose could have potentially been a better option (what if scenario)
@fashionlover4

I'm just unsure how it would have worked really, I think it's too soon for a pivot from Virgil's vision especially since it was doing so well, just that the unfortunate circumstances meant they had to get a new creative director but I don't think they wanted an aesthetic shift that another distinct designer like Martine Rose would bring. Also, I feel like in Martine Rose's case specifically, she worked at Balenciaga when Demna first joined and her style was a huge influence on their menswear so honestly Martine Rose would have to avoid a big aspect about her own design language in order to not mimic Balenciaga even though she sort of pioneered the style. I really can't imagine what a Martine Rose LV would look like.

i think what pharrell can bring especially with his own unique eye/style is his creation ov his own jewellery designs, thee chains he wore were revolutionary for thee hip hop street style [not yet fully capitalised upon but would be soon w/ pharrell’s own BDBC] & utilised different colour and sized diamonds + a complex layering which hadn’t rly been seen before. his most directly influencer is his literal protege in tyler, the creator who already trail-blazes in many ways and has his entire life but 1. has done so independently since his popular debut back in 2014, popularising everything from converse [again] to brown puffer jackets and russian fur hats. ‘flower boy’ practically dressed an entire generation & these efforts are no doubt inspired by pharrel’s decisions before him & his guidance during AS WELL AS 2. tyler has already worked on music for a LV show prior to this. i doubt pharrell will leave behind an opportunity to have bunnyhop hop on this, and thee potential for pharrell to radically change thee presentation ov menswear jewellery for LV as well as his unique sense ov taste which has always been His Own opens up a lot ov doors. it makes sense on every level and i think it’ll take somebody like pharrell & his connections to relevant trendsetters like T to make LV into a fashion house which is respected by haute cotoure and broader youth fashion. sincerely, someone who honestly knows nothing about fashion

Hey man keep up with the good content I’ve been binging your channel for the last few days. Wanted to give a couple video suggestions that would be cool to see: - Would be cool to do a fashion icon tier list, similar to the fashion designer one you did but with people like Rocky, Bowie, Princess Diana etc - A video on supreme and its rise in the culture throughout the mid 2010s would be quite interesting

After watching the other Pharrell videos and then yours, I still think that he will be fine and so does LV financially. On the other side, I think that LV's CD choice is like showing that the menswear is basically trapped in Virgil's design language. We could say that it sells and continuing it as a tribute to V. But without V's vision it will be cheap tricks. We can't forget that V writes some of the best shownotes that flesh out his ideas. I think this intellectualism will be missing in Pharrell's era. I could imagine that Pharrell's collection will be somewhat creative but I hope he doesn't rely too much on copying Virgil and really showcasing some original ideas. It will be like, oh that's something new but somehow not thoughtprovoking like some of V's design.
@ThaSweetHart
@ThaSweetHart 8 ай бұрын
Why would Pharrell need to copy Virgil? Pharrell has had his own interesting career in fashion that spans over 20 years. Pharrell was a cultural tastemaker before anyone even knew who Virgil was. It seems that one of the issues with the discourse surrounding this is some people don’t actually know who Pharrell is.

Love Zoe Hong and her pragmatic take on the matter. Your video takes elements she touched on a step further by looking at Pharrell's appointment as a signal for LVMH wanting to maintain the commercial strength and appeal of its menswear line over seeking avenues for innovation. Rihanna is another popular music figure whose business partnership adds diversity to the LVMH brand while also providing strong growth in the beauty market.

I understand the commercial logic 100%. It think it is still a bit insulting/demoralizing for fashion designers that studied and work soooo hard and that are way more knowledgeable about fashion to see their job (or futur job) taken by a guy that doesn’t know how to sew a button. Ofc we aren’t in a Couture era of fashion, especially at LV. But knowing how to work with fabric, how does it moove, is it easy to work with, the quality of some fibers etc etc etc , it is so important to me.

You are very spot on. Right after Virgil died, I thought LVMH would be smart to hire Pharrell. But after few seasons of them milking Virgil’s left overs, I thought they would move into a different direction… ie designer centric/ aka no name designers who’s well known in fashion world but little general public recognition. After seeing Pharrell’s show last night, I thought they made a really good choice. There are lots of remnants of Virgil in the collection but out goes super exaggerated silhouettes that no one can pull off besides real celebrities. Out goes mostly super tacky huge LV logos except few items here and there. In comes more understated references that LV-lifers’ get. Given basically all A list music stars came out to support him, I have no doubt Pharrell’s more understated vision will sell like hot cakes since his famous friends will be wearing them. It remains to be seen if those leather speedies that are priced like a birkin will hold their value in resell market. Only time will tell.

After seeing your video, I would add "Why pharrel is the perfect choice for LV commercially". He is not a designer as you said and somehow this makes me think from now on more and more these companies will want to hire someone with enough "influence". As in: the next creative director will be Ronaldo. I can't help to think that something will be lost with this since the role of visionary and designer will be separated, but if that is what the brand wants then so be it. I suppose that only explains why LV was never my cup of tea, even under Virgil. One thing is for sure: we have seen Lagerfeld sketch, we have seen Roseberry literally sketch on the runway and that is something Pharrel will never do.
@ThaSweetHart
@ThaSweetHart 8 ай бұрын
You don’t know know whether Pharrell can sketch anything and I know this because you compared him to a footballer. Last I checked, only one of the two of those people has worked in fashion for the past twenty years…and it isn’t Ronaldo. Seems like much of the most important points of the video went in one ear and out the other for you.

On one hand I understand perfectly why Pharrell gets to be "Pharrell" 25 + yrs later. He has the look/looks/language and appearance of what his brand presents him to be -- But does he REALLY have the talent. How much does Talent even matter in 2023. Chad is the one who made the music--Without Chad there was no Neptunes--And now...I mean...Idk...Is "skateboard P" really that guy...Or is he just a brand that looks and acts the part very well - Weather it be this new position or his other shit ...I'm genuinely curious to what others think. I think he's well over-rated but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (He does have a great voice)

I'm not sure what you mean by overrated. In the context of fashion, he's been ahead of the curve for years, with early associations with Nigo and billionaire boys club being a long running successful brand. So as to knowing what the consumer wants, then yes he has "talent." I think that fashion tends to be romanticized but at the end of the day it's about selling clothes especially for a brand like LV.

They picked him for his image, personally I don't think his collections will be innovative, but I reckon he will sell well.... Also does Pharrell have as many connections as Virgil did? Idk Virgil had plenty of big celebs and similar circles to Pharrell. Is connections that important if your LV? Perhaps creatively, but I don't see Pharrells creativity being his strong suit... Like you said its apart of LVMH so IMO the biggest part is just being able to attach the Pharrell name to LV. LV won't struggle for connections, collabs, and areas to expand, but will probably keep the status quo for a couple years until they need someone to innovate.
@fashionlover4
@fashionlover4 Жыл бұрын
Yea sell well and expand other ranges which is ideal for them really, I would say he does as Pharrell has been famous longer than Virgil, maybe not in fashion but as a celebrity overall, and I think connections isn't absolutely necessary but I can see it coming in use for LV's benefit if Pharrell wants to bring people in, he'll know who's best for the job.
@riptaye
@riptaye Жыл бұрын
I'm not necessarily into fashion, but I do believe that anyone that doesn't understand the innovative genius that Pharell has displayed over 3 decades doesn't really care for hip hop culture and therefore doesn't really get why LV would choose him. Pharell isnt even popular with the new generation anymore so its more than just him being a "big name".

Okay but here’s the thing: one must need to know the construction process in order to design and make these decisions. Imagine the work room: he wants a collar like this…like what? Does he know the terminology? Does he know the language? This is very important in order to have longevity. It could be a mass marketable failure, because it becomes chaos

Considering the fact that he’s worked in fashion for the past 20+ years, why wouldn’t Pharrell be able to communicate his ideas successfully? The lack of self awareness in many of the comments like this is hilarious because he likely knows more than many of the people questioning his skill set.
