Since you're talking about techno here, a little side note from me: Keep in mind that especially for Techno and especially for rumble basses, the phasing is what creates the rumble in the first place. This rumbling "earthquake-like" sound is (usually) made by having many different bass layers, that phase-cancel each other out - creating those huge, insable soundscapes. Usually done by putting reverb on the kicks / subs (yes. really.), some delay and then bouncing them to audio and then layering them up, adding distortion, etc. For an example listen to Virtual Self - Ghost Voices (Raito Remix). Those Techno "basses" are very much atonal, and don't even have a root note, because the phasing destroys any identifable pitch. Now, you still want to have a seperate Bass and Kick in those cases. But when mixing those together, you either don't want them perfectly in phasde, or simply can not phase-align them, because they have no definitive "pitch". I'm talking about this because when i was a beginner, i often thought these priciples are universal, while they really are not. Very nice trick with the distortion. Additionally you can low pass the entire mix to create this "behind closed doors" effect - like you're standing outside of a club or something. That also helps really hearing how the groove of the bassline goes.
@Gnurklesquimp25 ай бұрын
Rumble bass is still one of the coolest things that for some reason only techno and cinema seem to make use of... doesnt need to be your whole bassline, a kick, tonal bass and rumble bits grooving together is crazy. Great way to have more options with droning bass notes too.

It is exactly one part of what we do in live sound too. Align the subs (big boxes on the ground) and mains (flying speakers left and right). We measure the time réponse of the common frequencies and align them so they add as perfect as possible. Lots of impact energy can be lost just for that.

One simply way to get around the phase issue problem ist to create an audio file of the Kick and the bass combined and to use this as my Kick-bass. This is basically what you do when you put the phase randomization to Zero. I sometimes just watch your videos, because it is quite entertaining. I found your Minimal Techno interpretation not very Robert-Hood-like but more psy-trancey. It still sounds very groovey though.

Great video! I was just thinking, changing the volume of the downbeat sub notes from the others is a cool idea but having them on separate synths makes it harder to prevent the notes from phasing with one another (assuming the envelope has some release). I'd probably just use the note velocity for safety. Otherwise it's a great surgical process :)

nice, thanks. That Kick2 plugin seems nice, going to try it out I think. Way better to sculpt your kick than to try 142 kick samples
@juschu859 ай бұрын
17:05 And that's the problem. Or just "problem" depending on your perspective. You can't "just" change the note of the sub. With techno, that might work most of the times. But even in techno, sometimes that's a limiting factor you don't want. Fortunately, Bitwig has the device Note Receiver. I would have to sit down for a while to figure out how exactly, but that device should help you make the kick's pitch automatically follow the note the sub is playing. Depending on how the kick synth is reacting to a change of the note, especially the envelopes, it might be a good idea to resample the kick first.
@juschu859 ай бұрын
Something that also could be a problem with this: The signal from the note coming from the sub might come one tick to late. So the kick note just started and the note number is already sent. So you might want to modulate the pitch in the sampler instead of manipulating the note itself with a midi device. That would still work (really really) shortly after the note on message.
@DashGlitch9 ай бұрын
in my experience you want a static pitch for the kick, if you want to change the notes of the sub, just do it on the last of the 1/8th part of the 1/4 and there will be no issue.
@apexmusic75009 ай бұрын
Great tutorial and first time I understand kick and bass phase, so thanks! I wonder: couldn’t you also make the kick just longer so it is waveform is as long as the sub? What’s the difference when separating these in kick and sub?

Sure you can, but this way you can easier control the groove of the bass

This type of precision makes me wonder why we don’t just make one patch that does both jobs. Given your wizard level skills in phase plant I would guess you have done this before. Maybe there is some reason you prefer to layer a kick and a bass rather than make one kick/sub patch?
@DashGlitch9 ай бұрын
Easier to groove it if you have midi control over just the sub :) also Phase Plant is immense and one of the best software synths out there, but it's not 100% sample accurate with very sharp modulations, which the kick is. I mean it sounds good but it's not 100% repeatable if that makes sense.
