Although he has yet to race an F1 car, 2021 FIA F2 Champion, Oscar Piastri, today extraordinarily rejected the chance to race for Alpine F1 in 2023. In this video, Peter Windsor, speaking live to the Radio RSN 927 Breakfast Show in Melbourne, talks about the events leading up to Piastri's decision; about why Piastri now seems likely to replace his fellow Aussie, Daniel Ricciardo, at McLaren; about why Ricciardo holds the contractual cards - and about how it all might be sorted in the medium-term.

Indy Car and the U.S. would fall in love with Daniel. I've heard this potential partnership mentioned during an Indy Car race broadcast. We have also seen Daniel's affinity for the U.S.. It seems like the move would be a nice reset for his career. If he does well and ,theoretically, is given one last shot at an F1 seat somewhere, he would return with rejuvenated confidence, which is something that currently seems to be lacking. Having a reset might be just the thing he needs.

This is why it's great to watch you. I've been looking around social media about this and you're the only one who knew Alpine had missed the deadline to take up Piastri. Which would mean talks of a legal battle are probably wrong because it's pretty cut and dry that Alpine have no case
@mathieugoulutbunel106
@mathieugoulutbunel106 2 жыл бұрын
Well, the observers assume Alpine missed the deadline for the option. Nobody knows for sure. Generally these options expires at the end of July (in France we talk about the 31st of july being the deadline, not the 1st of august), but although it's very likely that it is the case, i don't believe anyone has proof of that yet... so the term "knowing" is a bit strong. That being said, i very much believe as well that Alpine did mess up and missed the deadline, due to too much confidence in Nando's contract extension.

@@username8878 It's not Alpine's ability, the issue is they ignored him. The fact that Alpine's boss said he had no idea that Alonso was jumping ship shows Piastri being promoted was not on the cards to drive for Alpine next year. The longer your a reserve driver the less likely you are to get a promotion, Oscar should have been on the grid for them in 2021 and instead he was heading into 2023 as test driver. Also the fact that they didn't know Alonso and Piastri both wanted out shows there's still serious issues with managing their drivers. Everyone blamed Riccardo when Renault didn't see it coming now it's Alonso and Piastri in one year? Alpine need to fire whoever is managing their driver program. 3 drivers in as many years is a disaster they've lost a mover of merch, a modern legend and one of the most promising rookies on paper and the driver they are banking it all on is managed by rival team with it's own aging legend.

Pete - I’d disagree with the perspective on why Danny left RBR. A combination of RBR clearly favouring one side of the garage despite evidence showing they were pretty evenly matched - the lead up to the incident in Baku in 2018 showed Daniel being quite fair in battling with Max; Honda being a massive unknown going into 2019; Renault being on the up in 2018 with lots of promise going into 2019. It was a fair choice, but a risky one. And the risks proved to be too far. So in retrospect no, Danny should not have left RBR but at the time it was not as silly an idea as it sounds now.

Ricciardo ONLY beat Max in 2017 on points with Max winning 2 races and Ricciardo winning 1 race … this while Max was still a teenager. In 2018 Max beat Ricciardo by over 60 points and Qualifying it was 13-9 and 15-7 in Max favour from 2017-18. Many people don’t realize how daunting it was for Max to go to a top team in RB midway through a season in 2016 and immediately outshone Ricciardo by winning his 1st race for them and then putting on that absolute masterclass in Brazil in the rain outclassing Ricciardo and even overtaking Rosberg in the dominant Mercedes. If Ricciardo has to stay at RB another year with Max improving at a rate of knots and probably embarrassing Ricciardo he would never have been able to command such a big salary like he did at Renault and subsequently at McLaren.

@@rezaahjappie6044 Max won his first race for RBR after the team messed up Danny’s strategy. He was fast but it wasn’t exactly as if he blew Danny away right away. And 2018 saw a large number of mechanical issues for Danny in the second half of the season. I agree - Max would have been the dominant force in the team, however Danny was still better than any other driver RBR have had since in terms of relative pace to Max. Danny had runs on the board as one of the top 3 drivers in F1, and Ferrari and Mercedes seemed hesitant to give him a contract as they already had number 1 drivers n their teams and did not want to rock the boat with them by bringing Danny in. In fairness, based on form and results at the time, Danny should have got the Mercedes seat that went to Bottas or the Ferrari seat that went to Leclerc, and later Sainz. I have no doubt that Mark has had a good look around at Alpine with the extensive testing program that Oscar has had with Alpine. Mark knows what a good team looks like from the inside from his days at Red Bull with Adrian Newey and Christian Horner. Fernando & Mark Webber still remain very good friends. I'm sure he has talked at length with Fernando about the inner workings of the team, he's seen enough to say this is a team in decline and it would be better for your career to be driving elsewhere. And/Or, there appears to be cancerous personalities in management that they are being warned to steer clear of. Individually, Alain Prost, Fernando Alonso and Oscar Piastri are big losses and they lost all 3 inside of 7 months. And Marcin Budkowski. Further, I'm not sure how Fernando continues with Alpine at all this season - a handshake over a beer isn't going to fix this. His trust with management is broken beyond repair and I can't help but feel the engineers and mechanic's morale will be at an all-time low.

I am guessing both Alonso and Piastri's contract options for 2023 expired on 31 July. Neither of them were renewed by then and they both had a plan B and have exited stage right. Alonso probably thought they were going to put Piastri in the car for 2023 and Piastri probably thought Alonso was getting the drive. Szafnauer has monumentally stuffed up and will need to get Ricciardo back now. Regardless I expect he will get the sack.

What I don't understand is Piastri's response sounding so final. 'I will not be driving for Alpine next year.' Seems like one hell of a risk to take, hoping that your talent is enough to convince McLaren to pay you to drive AND Ricciardo not to, if you don't already have a deal in place. Especially for someone who hasn't even been in F1. Wouldn't you at least kind of leave that door open? Indeed, if Im not mistaken, he is also a single Race Win away from equalling Michael Andretti on 42 Race Wins, which is about ten wins shy of Scott Dixon and the all-time Win list. You saw it was 20 years to get a Mark Webber after Alan Jones, and since 2013, Australia has had drivers for the worlds premier openwheelers ready to go off the production line! Well, Scott Mclaughlin we will put in our basket and claim credit for as an Aussie stateside, but such a fortunate racefannI feel I am to have had Mark, then Dan with his Spa, Monaco and Monza Race Wins, and Will Power with an Indycar Cjampionship followed more importantly with that 2018 Win which fullfilled me just like a Senna win once did. And now we have such potential glory to rejoice upon as Aussie openwheel racefans with the deployment of our next man Piastri. Dans Monza win...we've been most fortunate racefans to have had Dan, he made his mark and his wins left us elated like Marks did, and like Will Powers. For me this elation was only ever experienced watching Senna victories in highschool (an Ayrton disciple is how I describe the Senna cult workship of my late-teen years) We have Properly Enjoyed seeing the unreachable glories for Aussie Racecar drivers become reachable in the 35 years as a single-seater Fanatic.* (* there is no in between here, people in Australia mostly dont know, dont care, and dont care to know about the premier single-seat racing catagories of Indy and F1, or, they alternatively are, Fanatics. I heard that there was a clause in Piastri's contract that obliged him to take up the call to the seat... even then it does seem weird that Oscar is actively burning a bridge when he probably didnt need to. even if he is confident in getting that McLaren seat next year, there is no need to be so outward with it, I call it bad PR at best, almost over-reactive. And i understand that he thought he had to say something but I wonder if he even consulted Mark before airing this on twitter. Peter, I thought you of all people would see the tactless from Piasti's execution. (edit) yea guys i understand that alpine just as dumb in this situation, I'm not debating that. I'm just saying that, without having insiders knowledge of the contract discussions, it seems like piastri is risking shooting himself in the foot here. Performing well at Mclaren is a much better place to be to impress the three top teams and if you dont your still in the best of the rest. Thinking I will go straight to Williams in a car at the back of the grid and the top teams will come running is fantasy. George Russell remember was a Mercedes driver on loan as I am suggesting.Piastri is a very talented driver but as of now unproven in F1 and he will need more than one season to impress. Piastri and his agent didn't respond to Alpine when Alonso announced officially his move. This is the reason why they made the announcement, to force Weber and Piastri to officialise he will not drive for them in 2023. It makes easier now for them to fill Alonso seat for 2023, but I think Piastri and Weber made a big communication error, and if Piastri doesnt make an exceptional season in F1 next year, he will close all other possibility for a team to hire him. I wish good luck to Lando next year. If he didn't go along with a guy like Daniel, I guess the honeymoon will be very short with Oscar.

I think Piastri will not drive anywhere in F1 in 2023 now. McLaren has pretty much already 3 drivers with a contract for 2023, so why would Piastri make a chance? Norris, Riccardo has still 1 more year and on June 12th or 13th, both Palou and McLarenF1 on Twitter announced Palou being part of the 2023 line-up. Then there are also still rumours around O'Ward and Herta. So not ment bad Peter, but who says that McLaren wants Piastri? Maybe Webber/Piastri hopes to drive for McLaren as they see more potential in that team than Alpine.

I think it's pretty obvious why Ricciardo left Red Bull, and it was definitely the right decision to leave. Yes he would have guaranteed more race wins, but he'd have also guaranteed never winning a world championship. Max not only is better than him, but he has the entire team wrapped around his finger. Ricciardo didn't want to become Webber 2.0 and the only way to do that was to take a risk and leave, to a team where he'd be the main man. Even he would have known it was more likely to not work than work, but it was a risk he had to take.

So Zhou goes to Williams, Latifi out. Ricardo takes a one year at Alpha Romeo, and Oscar could have stayed at Alpine with them paying Ricardo’s pay off to Mclaren and Mclaren gets an up seat. But now he’s in that Mclaren. Bad negotiations, but it’s a step he couldn’t refuse in order to get in. Alpine will get Hulk on a one year, maybe? Cheap and gives you time.

Amazing how an Englishman underestimates Perez over Ricciardo when the former spent most of his career deprived of a winning seat and thrived whereas the latter quit driving for the best team when shadowed by Max…Ricciardo is talented but engineers keep saying he is an instinct driver, offering zero worthy feedbacks to improve the car and thus when the car does not fit his style he has no tools to work around this situation simply because he does not understand the car well enough and point exactly what has to be improved…Perez had to work his ass off to have decent setups and score way above teams’ expectations for the most part of his career…

Sorry but stating that he left Red Bull when they are the "best" F1 race team is a bit disingenuous if not just wrong. He joined the team in 2014 and yes got wins, podiums sure. But never got close to that championship winning car over 4 years. After 6 years in the sport and showing he deserves to be atleast the Equal driver, he ended up leaving. Only on 2021 did Red Bull shock us with that Car that won max the championship. Riccardios mistake was not leaving Red Bull, but leaving Renault for mclaren. Love the videos but needed to rant about that.
