Which Pokemon Game did y'all find the most difficult?
@mrhalfsaid1389

Platinum, it's hard because grinding Pokémon is actually hard to do, it's time consuming to do one, let alone a team. Plus on top of that, in early game bosses often are about 5 to 10 levels above the expected level and have moves you CANT ACCESS YET. Platinum is hard early game and it's frustrating no one notices when everyone knows mars's purrugly is THE NUZLOCKE KILLER

Which game? Black, that was my first game, and even at the E4, I still didn't know all the types matchups... (And the Tcheren battle you mentioned, I suffered on it too). I also had a... maybe not "poor" team, but not strong, and Chandelure was just cracked with Fire Blast... But as for hardest battle, Cynthia in BDSP. What the F* was that? I know it's an easy answer, but it's one of the only battle to which I struggled since Black, actually, it's the only loss I got since that game (not even Ultra-Necrozma) (Volo doesn't count in this). EV trained team of multiple super strong pokemons makes a hard battle, who would have thought? And then the items... am I at the world finals or fighting a NPC?

I remember in the Isle of armor DLC your rival would rig the battle to have toxic spikes or psychic terrain to swing the fight in their favor. Basic Rules for making the game more difficult without nuzlocking: 1) set the game to set mode, please this returned my love for the games. 2) No revives in battle (Honestly no items may be fun) 3) Optional* look up the strongest level of the next gym leader and try to stay under that cap for all your mons. I think the best way to "quickly" balance pokemon and level the playing field between the player and AI is allow the AI to use the same items as you do, or perhaps a selection. This forces more strategy, as you have to internally debate whether healing your pokemon is worth it when you are giving them access to healing their own pokemon as well. That, or simply forbid the player use of any items at all in important battles like Gym battles.
@theglasshalffull6958

Exactly! Just even out the playing field between both competitors and the difficulty would instantly change. Like thinking about what Pokemon you should revive or worrying about whether or not the Ai is gonna heal their Pokemon would make the games much more of a challenge

I think my favorite idea to improve Pokemon boss design is to give them a synergistic team. Things like Weather, Terrain and Trick Room can be incredibly potent if they're built around correctly and it would make the counterplay a lot more interesting as well. Though the best way to implement this is by focusing on abilities that setup the strategy, which is something we don't yet have for Trick Room

Tournament rules, items are limited in gyms or champion battles, pokemon are restricted to a level cap, and even playing fields, pokemon used must match the number of the enemy's. This wouldn't be applied to normal battles, however for special battles these kick in

@@theglasshalffull6958 It'd also be cool to see an "advanced trial" option which buffs the enemy team and AI, acting as a split between the casual players and the advanced players, maybe even rewarding the player with a special item for finishing it that way, better tms, held items, etc. Or maybe special dialog/features after the E4.

@@theglasshalffull6958 that said, to not content lock players who don't fully understand combat, it should be rematchable in the post-game similar to that of SV, with both options still available (maybe the ultimate reward for beating all gym trainers on the higher difficulty unlocks a world tournament style arena with traditional tournament rules, and a restriction to one "uber" per team.)

One last thing the opponents could do to make the games way harder, they could have their own "Trainer is about to send out (insert pokemon here), do you want to switch?" when they KO one of the player's. OK, maybe not for regular trainers... maybe not even Gym Leaders, but the E4, Champions and maybe even Rivals (past a certain pat of the game) could definitively do that. Even if you use a Max Revive, it's gonna be hard to bring it on the field that way.

Before Volo, there were totem battles in alola. If by a chance a totem summoned a second pokemon, you'd have one of your pokemon to deal to two opponents. That could get astronomically difficult if the other pokemon had something like buffs or priority moves all hitting full power your solo pokemon in play, koeing it before it could attack. 2 vs 1 battles or even horde battles: I would add them to cool ways bosses could cheat.

I like to play with lower level pokemon than opponent trainers, but use X-items strategically to compensate againtis tougher ones, like elite four and the champion. Usually I do that because I hate gringing and also don't I like overpowered pokemon like legendaries. One reason I respect Cynthia's battle in DPPt is that (intentionally or not) her spiritomb completely breaks my way of playing. Spiritomb is her first pokemon, forcing me to setup while facing it. Then, its Embargo move comes and kills my access to items, forcing me to switch to erase this effect and lose any buffs from x-items previously used (and also take free damage). Her pokemon's higher levels made spiritomb a heavy tank with no type weakness (fairies didn't exist), impossible to be beaten in one hit by any pokemon on my team. My stronger attacks were range to leave Spiritomb with some HP left, which triggered the use full heals (which also cured status). An inverted situation in which the IA can use items, but my embargoed pokemon cannot. Ocasionally, Silver Wind would trigger all Spiritomb's stats, putting my lower-leveled, unbuffed pokemon in range of 1hko. Finally, Spiritomb's ability Pressure would drain what I had left of PP of my pokemon from previous elite four battles. I'm Embargo'ed, can't use Ether or Elixer to recover PP either. I couldn't even use the turns she would heal with full restore to buff or heal myself because, again, of Embargo. Spiritomb was a nightmare to face, really challenging for my playstyle. I wish there were more moments like these in the franchise, some that really put me in a tight spot.

Hmm... Honestly, here's what I think No-one ever uses a revive in battle in the anime, right? I can't remember, but I don't think they do Instead, what I think Revives are, are for you to get your team up after a tough fight. Say, you're deeeep into one of the longer stretches of the game. Let's say..... Mt.Coronet or such. You're there, you're trying to make your way through, no Pokecenters anywhere near of course, aaaaand a pokemon you're fighting Explodes/Self-Destructs on you. That's a lot of damage. Maybe you run into a bunch of encounters because of levels (& repels won't save you), maybe you couldn't run from a fight. It'd be a Pain to trek trough all this way to get to a pokecenter & back. So, we got Revives, so that fainting isn't the be all end all while you'er exploring I wouldn't necessarily give opposing trainers Revives But what I Would do Is give them advantageous weather, terrain, stat boosts and/or hazards set on the field It'd be fair, because you can usually strategize around this stuff. You can overwrite the weather or clear out the entry hazards etc. And hey, it would make sense for this Fire-Type trainer to want to battle outside in this brilliantly bright warm sunlight. Yeah I could see this roughed up seafarer simulate a tough storm inside their gym just to make you feel like you're Really battling It'd really enhance the fights, story & atmosphere In Scarlet/Violet, gym fights can have different weather active during them already, it's just kinda random rather than pre-determined (I Think) And hey, evil people would definitely use any advantages they could to get an upper hand in a fight. Clara & Avery I think got Psychic Terrain/Toxic Spikes stuff in their fights, because they're competitive and want to win no matter what. So we should definitely have more of these

I'm sorry, but I disagree heavily with this video. I could talk for a while about why I disagree, but I think I'll just talk about the Volo battle to prove my point about why what you recommended wouldn't work for pokemon games. The Volo battle was, as you put it, unfair. It took me, someone who has been playing Pokemon games for about a decade at this point and is pretty good at the games, dozens of tries to beat that battle. And with preperation to beat it, I grinded my story team for hours and eventually was over 5 levels ahead of Volo's team. And I still lost. After doing this for around 10 attempts. I decided to look up a guide on how to beat Volo. A video I saw was someone recommending using some of the legendaries. I used that team, and still lost several times just due to the amount of endurance bullshit the fight puts you through and how healing a pokemon essentially equals the pokemon out being killed, so you were left with limited pokemon, against an opponent that can boost it's evasion, making the battle become a test of not only skill and endurance, but also complete fucking luck. I lost a few attempts just because I missed several times and then was killed. When I finally beat Volo, I wasn't happy. I was frustrated and tired that it took me several hours to beat a single fight in a pokemon game. And I was also upset because I couldn't use the team that I spent the entire game with to beat the final boss. And if I wanted to use them, it would have felt like an artificial win since I couldn't beat it off of my own merit, but off of repetitive grinding. Pokemon is a game made for all ages, which includes kids. I don't want to imagine the amount of time some kids spent in the fight against Volo and how many quit because they couldn't do it. It took you, someone who you describe as no longer a dumbass, 16 tries to beat Volo. So what about a kid, who doesn't have the best grasp on the mechanics as adults do or didn't know about the twist and got annoyed because they thought they won, only to lose a couple turns later? That kid would be upset when playing the game, something no one wants. What would you say should be the solution for this? Should the child just get better at the game and spend several evenings grinding their team to become stronger? No, because why would that be fun for a child? Simple answer: It isn't. The Volo fight was a fun surprise but didn't have a strong emotional responcs at the end compared to when I beat Lysandre. I was happy when I beat Lysandre, not being he was hard, but because I stopped a genocidal maniac from destroying the world. Volo's difficulty overshadowed his importance to the plot and after a while I forgot why I was even battling him. My recommendation for how to make the games more difficult is just to simply play with self-imposed rule sets or even to play ROM hacks such as Emerald Kaizo or Radical Red. This allows the game to be fun for children or players who may not be as skilled and allows them to have a feeling of catharsis when beating a boss battle, but also allows for veterans to have a challenge. I think for a video like this, you have to be more reflective and ask 'Why are the games easy?' not 'How can we make them harder?'. Some of your points were interesting, but you completely lost me when you started suggesting limitations on item usage or even evil teams and champions blatantly cheating. This kinda ruined the video for me and had me sighing more than actually listening. Overall, I hope you have a good day mate.👍

I can see your point in many ways and I can see why you'd find the volo boss fight in particular annoying and stupid and not as good as I made it out to be. Surprsingly enough I was actually able to beat Volo with the team I used during the story (minus dialga which I switched out for hisuian avalugg because he sucks) anjd my team was a good 5-6 levels behind Volo's Pokemon. and was even able to land the final blow with my decidueye which felt very story-book esque. But honestly if I were to play Legends Arceus as a 10 year old I still think I would've been able to find enjoyment from Volo's overpowered team. Because for me personally I welcomed that kinda challenge and would love to test my skills against him to see how I would be able to pull out a W. Case in point when I first played Mario and Luigi Partners in time as a kid, I had a lot of trouble beating the final boss in that game. Which also had multiple phases and tons of HP and I did get frustrated. But I was able to turn that frustration into willpower and had to come up with a strategy and whatnot to finally overcome the final boss. And when I did I felt much more satisfied with myself because I was able to overcome that adversity and win. In the end we won't truly know how a kid feels while versing volo because we are not kids but they might have the same mindset that you or me have or a completely different one altogether. Have a good one as well mate, these kinda comments make me happy so I could see different points of views to my opinions

@@theglasshalffull6958 I guess when I was talking about children playing, I was kinda using my experiences with hard bosses. When playing through Bower's Inside Story, my touch screen was a little messed up and needed constant calibration and I didn't have a stylus so I was stuck for a while in the Wiggler section and after hours of barely failing, I gave up. I went back to it a few years later on my 3DS and completed it on my second try and it did feel pretty fun. When I was a kid, I admit, I struggled with the Diantha battle in X and Y. I tried multiple teams and still couldn't beat it (mainly because I was a dumbass and put flamethrower on a garchomp). I tried for days on end to beat her and once I did I save saved the game, turned it off and didn't go back to it for the rest of the day (Pokemon Y was my favourite game by a mile back then so that battle seriously pissed me off). I do understand that different people have different reactions to difficulty and even individuals can have different reactions, and that we don't know how kids dealt with it because we aren't kids. It just feels like a bad decision on GameFreak's part to add a battle with Volo's difficulty to most of their games. Should champions and evils teams be difficult? Absolutely. But should they be extremely difficult? No. I think a perfect balance is Steven, who gave a good challenge whilst not being outrageously difficult, or even Cynthia to an extent. I'm sorry if my comment sounded a bit too harsh. I seriously didn't want it to be and just wanted a discussion about it. Also Congrats on beating Volo with the story team. 8:49 ILCA actually made the elite 4 and champion in BDSP really challenging by making the pokemon fully invested in their proper EVs, had a good held item, and had comp ban worthy moves. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3O1q4etr9OjjpY Mandjtv showed what the npcs had at 17:20 in his video. 20:40 apparently it took this kid 3 days just to beat Cynthia in BDSP. What they should do is just make the Ai of the npcs smarter, give them scaling amounts of pokemon to have such as 1st and 2nd gym have 3 pokemon, 3rd and 4th gym have 4 pokemon, 5th and 6th gym have 5 pokemon, 7th, 8th, Elite 4, and Champion have 6 pokemon. Have those pokemon have decent moves and have 4 moves (seriously most games give the npc pokemon only 3 moves). These small tweaks would give the mainline games enough of a difficulty boost without going to bullshit levels and of course it would technically make nuzlocke games even MORE interesting to watch.

thera are rom hacks that are capable of making the game more difficult without the ai cheating, making the ai teams more balanced with better moves and stats and items and making harder to overlevel. Vanilla Trainers stop having any sort of difficulty after gen V, having worse teams and easier overleveling on gen VI onwards

I know that a lot of rom hacks are able to make battles a lot harder without “cheating” which would also help the regular Pokémon games difficulty as well. But idk if there were some nonconventional things in the games as well would also just make the games feel more fun as well (at least in my opinion)

Buddy, the Elite Four already is a cheat. You fight 30 pokemon in a row with no healing, unless you purchased and use items.

@@theglasshalffull6958 it’s a fan game I’ve been playing, and it has different difficulties and a feature I really like in level caps. I’d definitely suggest giving it a shot, just know that it’s highest difficulty can be really tough at times

They marked the beginning of what the community defines as "modern games", so it's a stretch but I think it counts

I considered them “modern” because I split the 2D pixel art era as the old games and the 3D model era as the new games. But holy fuck I keep forgetting that XY are a decade old

Trainers should get the Ability to switch out their Pokémon aswell when they beat one of your Pokémon now that Switch Mode is the only Battle Mode available in the Main Story. Everything else in this Video is just bullshit. When I first started playing Pokémon with Lets Go Pikachu, I got wrecked by Blue and his Combo of just Charizard and Exeggcutor. Making the Trainers cheat would really just destroy Casual Play. Just give the Important Trainers all a Team of Good Pokemon with Held Items and Strategies besides just trying to demolish you with Attacking Moves and make them switch more. I would accept it if the AI was a Cheater tho. The Smart AI that these Important Trainers use should be able to see your whole Team. If an AI detects and can see the Coverage Moves you have on your Pokémon, it would give the Opposing Trainers a Reason to switch out even more. Multiple Battles in a row without healing are fine aswell. They don't feel cheated and still provide a lot of Challenge. 13:03 Lance didn't cheat, in the Alola and Unova Games you can get Underleveled Dragonite

Idk how recent of a Pokemon fan you are but I remember having a very easy time with the lets go games. But to each their own I guess. And yes, just making a team of good pokemon and great items/movepools is also needed but personally it would just be an interesting and fun change if some Pokemon trainers just had more advantages than you once in a while to just make Pokemon games more interesting. And I never knew that fact about Dragonite. But in the context of ONLY the Johto games, you can't get an underleveled dragonite while lance can. so I still consider it "cheating"

@@theglasshalffull6958 As I said before, I went in to Lets Go as a Casual Player in 2018 as I was never in Contact before with Pokémon and seeing Pikachu, the only Pokémon I knew, on a Cover made me buy the Game. I only brought this up in the first place because you in the Video pretty much just said "Kids and Casual Players will get over it" Suggesting 10 Pokémon on one Trainer or something. To that I literally only had say that back when I was a Casual, I wiped to 2 Pokémon that both only had 3 Moves each not even focused on Physical or Special. Pokèmon has a really complex Formula that is now 9 Generations deep. Pokèmon Games are really bad at explaining and you typically don't even notice as hardcore Fans are as I said multiple Generations into the Game, playing VGC Matches or watching Pokémon Videos, knowing every Mechanic and how to bring them to their Limits. Now, I didn't have these Problems anymore when I went ahead and played more Pokémon Games but all Pokèmon Games except for most Remakes are meant to be for Casuals.
