One thing not mentioned in the video is that for Choice Band Tera Blast users, you want to reduce your SpA IVs so that Tera Blast doesn’t switch from being physical to special after an Intimidate/Charm/etc. This is because Choice Band, despite how it’s shown on Showdown, is NOT a stat boost. Rather, it applies a 1.5x modifier on your physical moves, which also incidentally means that Foul Play damage IS booster by your own Choice Band. So for example, if your Choice Band Adamant Dragonite is at -2 Attack and you have max SpA IVs, Tera Blast switches from physical to special, which causes you to lose out on your Choice Band boost.
@20oxide36 Жыл бұрын
Everything here is correct except that choice band actually does modify the attack stat. In the case of foul play, the target's attack stat is used in damage calculation and the 1.5x attack boost is applied to the new attack stat.

which i sad for defensive teams, since it wont boost my massive 400 defense iron hands thigh press (i mean body press)
@Messuduppotatoasia Жыл бұрын
@@20oxide36 don’t mean to “no actually” but Choice Band boosts your Foul Play damage by 1.5, in the same way that a Life Orb boosts it by 1.3, Black Glasses by 1.2, etc. To clarify, I mean the USER of Foul Play holding Choice Band (like Choice Band Murkrow with Foul Play). The damage calculator agrees with this, unless they’re wrong and I’d be happy to be corrected. Similarly, burning your opponent doesn’t reduce YOUR Foul Play damage output. But if YOU are burned and you go for Foul Play, the damage is reduced. Neither Burn nor Choice Band modifies your stat, rather they apply damage modifiers, leading to somewhat counterintuitive interactions like these.
@20oxide36 Жыл бұрын
@@Messuduppotatoasia Yes, I agree that the choice band does increase the damage of foul play but it is because the new attack stat is given a 1.5x multiplier because the damage is based on the user's attack modifiers (after the opponent's stat raises/drops are applied). This works similarly to how huge power works, where if a pokemon with huge power used foul play the damage output would be doubled because the new attack stat is doubled, thus a choice banded foul play does 1.5x damage because the new attack stat is increased by 1.5x. However, burn, as you stated earlier, does decrease the base power of the user's physical moves by 0.5x (similarly to how black glasses increase the base power of dark moves by 1.2x) and this includes moves like foul play and body press. This is why body press damage is halved by burn and increased by black belt but not increased by 1.5x by choice band or doubled by huge power, the first two modify base power while the other two modify attack.

Hi Joey, great video as always. It made me think of a suggestion - a video detailing why certain mons run EV spreads/movesets to supplement aspects that don't really make sense on the surface. This video is why comprising aspects of a mon makes it more viable while that one would be about why optimizing aspects that initially seem irrelevant make a mon more viable. I've been playing pokemon since it first came to America but did not start playing PvP competitive until Gen 6. I remember over the years trying to optimize my mons for battle tower, stadium, battle revolution, etc. and going to smogon only to come out confused. Why run hidden power on this mon that has other more powerful coverage moves? Why invest speed on this slow mon? Well anyone whose played the last few gens know that any mon with an open moveslot gets HP Ice for Lando and Chomp (in gens with HP) and Magnezone runs speed to ensure he's faster than Skarmory. It's all what the metagame dictates. I think a video about this would be the jelly to the peanut butter right here and very informative for the younger viewers and anyone else looking to get into competitive for the first time.
@m05513 Жыл бұрын
Surprised Aegislash isn't on this list for speed. After you attack if you dont get the kill, you're paper thin until your next Kings Shield. Having a lower speed means that if you weren't going to get the KO, you're more likely to take the hit while your defences are very high, and can then use the priority Kings Shield to boost your defences for the next hit.
@eternalsnowman8217 Жыл бұрын
a new example of this in gen 9 is actually super interesting, physical mons with tera blast can lower their special attack to make sure their tera blast doesnt turn special in certain scenarios. a common example of this is dragonite in vgc which commonly runs tera flying tera blast, and at -2 with 31 ivs, that will change the dragonite's tera blast to special. but if you have a choice band and/or sword of ruin in combination with this dragonite, you would much rather it stay physical, so running 16/17 ivs will keep your dragonite physical at -2, while still maximizing special tera blast at -3 or lower.

We basically said "fuck it, lets just allow all mons of Ubers" and I had first pick so obviously I just took Proto-Groudon, second pick chose Proto-Kyogre. the difference in bulk between running max hp and running max in both defenses, specially in a pokemon with a low base hp like hat, is very small, so you'd rather run max hp and conserve the rest of your evs for more bulk (in one or both sides), power or even a bit of speed. Even with the triage aaa set, hat still wants as much bulk as possible without having to sacrifice that many evs, unlike with subseed mons that don't care as much about their bulk. In general you always want to run hp investment if you want to maximize bulk, the most common exceptions to this you'll see are eving to live a specific hit from a specific threat or on mons with insane base hp and low or comparatively low defenses, like the pink blobs and specially guzzlord. With chansey/blissey you might want to run max hp to minimize the special/physical damage you take, but with guzzlord you almost never want to run hp investment since its defenses are so low and its hp is so high

At bochum VGC regional I used a maushold with 19ivs in atk (if i recall correctly) because it would minimize the damage on my annihilape (and i had to calc the damage considering all of my Pokémons atk) while maximizing it against Indeedee, as I had some calcs with beat up redirected damage + kowtow kleave from kingambit (if i remember right)

Isn't the most common usage of reduced IVs to get a specific Hidden Power? For a lot of mons, the best coverage move and for an unlucky few the best STAB move available has been to set its IVs to get a specific type of Hidden Power. Ice for special attackers and Ground or Rock for physical attackers, usually.

put 0 speed on a Galar Slowking, just in case of trick room, and since it's so slow it doesn't really matter. Next 3 matches were trick room teams that my Slowking ended up sweeping because it went first.

I thought you would mention lowering one of your stats so another one can get the beast boost or like on Roaring Moon having to lower it's attack stat to get the booster energy on speed

Every time someone mentions hidden power I am reminded how glad I am that it’s gone
@XENON3120 Жыл бұрын
Sort of true. Man I used to love using hidden power but over time using it for last 3 generations in a row made it really fresh when it was gone, the dragon finally got free from the unexpected hidden power ice user. This definitely impacts league format

im surprised you didnt mention lowered HP IVs, for life orb users so they can take less damage from their own life orb. Something like mamoswine, with 0 hp ivs, has 361 hp, so life orb will do 36 to itself. lowering its ivs to 29 means it only does 35 to itself. this is even more prevalent in little cup, where the low hp means the percentage is even more significant

Gen 2 Marowak lowers its attack DV so it doesn't roll over its attack after a swords dance
@XENON3120 Жыл бұрын
true I always made sure it was low so it didn't reach over 1012 or something that was the limit, since it would roll back under 2 digits of attack. Hilarious when it happened to me once but i think showdown doesn't apply those changes but in original games they do, and since I've made 2nd gen wifi battle using gold and silver I was put on the wrong end of the stick once, not a pleasant sight doing 2 hp damage to a suicune after an SD with EQ haha
@Masahane Жыл бұрын
@@XENON3120 I think showdown actually does it automatically too

I remember beginning of gen 6 when people had to breed and breeding was made easier going for a rotom wasnt that bad since you really needed 4 max stats for the standard bulky one that walls talonflame and mega pinsir since speed was preferably non 31 iv

Also Special Attackers can also max out Attack if they run attacks like U-Turn.
