I watched a video of @domiboy once. Idk if the video is still online but, he explained how he split/pop his hair and also how he separate, it could be a good start to understand 😊

Imagine your hair is like a tree. Your loc hair, like the branches of tree.🌴 So sometimes, when your gardening your style, your cut the branches, after a storm for exemple. You had 1 big branche and because you use a garden tool you have 2 differentes branches. With locs hair, it’s same thing. Imagine ( you can do the experience if you want, with wet hair) you have 2 locs side by side, you have 1 loc in right hand and the other loc in left hand, and you try to pull from different side. You are separate your locs. If the locs is mature, ppl use ✂️ cause it’s to hard. (Like when we are gardening) Ppl who used to do retwist (no matter the method) separate their loc. Some ppl could be the manic neightbor who is gardening every sunday, other person could be the one who just chill on the grass, or the next one could be the one whom just take care of this garden when he feels it’s necessary for himself 😌 Now split/popping the hair, especially at the roots of your hair. You still gardening, but just want to take care of the leafs and tiny branches of the tree. 🌿 At your root of your hair, the new growth especially if you don’t retwist (not so much or not at all), they gonna started marry each other. The loc is not a congo loc yet, but you can manipulate the new growth at the root. Because if you take a loc in your hand, go on the top, start moving the loc, you gonna feel a « tension » , and this tension point is where the new growth of your loc A have connection with your other loc B or/ and loc C etc. It’s a sign the loc gonna be a congo loc, a bigger branches. Depending of the gardener type you are😉 aka freeform/ semifreeform, traditionnal etc I don’t like theses label, but they influence a big part on the maintenance, the routine have. 🤓 Here the choice is on you, but Back in the story… So because separate it’s paintfull especially when the hair is not wet 😱, you just split/ pop with your finger like you do when you split/ pop tiny branch and leafs of the tree (it’s softer seperation method if you want 😉)

Popping locs is when they get parted ..then ripped ... to create clean lines... separating the locs are when they are slightly tangled at the roots.. you pull the locs apart just to open them.. but usually wetting them can minimize unnecessary breakage.. however, separating SHOULD be called popping... and parting should be calling ripping.. but in the industry. We call parting and ripping ....Popping and Separating should actually be called Popping. 🌻🌻

Starting to semifree form almost 7 years loc. I started to love my hair more with not showing my scalp, my hair has been unraveling since May of 2023 so I took this as a sign that it's time to stop the retwist and embrace the rest of my journey feeling free. Thanks love your hair.

Greetings and gratitude!! I have loc extensions and have been on my journey technically for 14 months. I had a couple of set backs in the beginning because of my hair type and trying to loc it with 4C hair. In my last and most recent attempt (third time) at installing my loc extensions, it has been 10 months now, and I think my daughter and I have figured out how to make this work lol. Mind you she is self taught and only 19. She is AMAZING! I am so grateful to have found you!! You have no idea how much help, advice, inspiration and empowerment you have given me on my journey. I had no idea just how much maintenance would be involved, but I'm happy I made the choice to do it. Your hair is beautiful and I love your videos.

Our hair is so complex, one need to study black hair as a science. My hair is so thick, it grows so strong it’s unbelievable. I have to keep it moisturised or they will mat together within a day. I love my locks and I have been growing it for two years. Usually I cut my hair every year, but my family members say not to cut it anymore so kept it without cutting it for the last two years. It’s already shoulder length and heavy, I wonder what it would look like another year. I am blessed with such thick and healthy hair. Thanks for sharing your beautiful hair experience with us, appreciated.

I’m always going through my roots to keep them from joining…I wash my hair every three weeks and light retwist then…the rest of the time I separate my roots just to maintain my parts and go back to leaving it alone..but my roots tangles fast so I have to stay on top of it.
