WHY Porn Changes the Brain | Science of NoFap [SFW]

What I've Learned

What I've Learned

6 жыл бұрын

This is about why high speed internet pornography has such high potential for making negative changes in the brain.

▲IG: / jeverett.whativelearned
Note: I said there's only 4 studies, but as per @yourbrainonporn , there's 34 as of July 13th
This is easily the most requested topic ever since I started this channel about a year ago or so. I really hope this addresses it in a way that y'all were hoping for.
NoFap has gained a lot of traction lately as many young men are noticing high speed internet porn's highly addictive properties. Some are noticing worsened confidence, high anxiety and even being improperly diagnosed with ADHD without thinking that what they do in private could be affecting them. It's difficult because our biology wants us to look at porn (really it wants us to create babies) and several doctors say porn and masturbation are healthy and natural - even that porn is good to spice up marital love lives. However, what we're dealing with since around 2000 is completely new and nothing like a playboy magazine.
If you're interested in this topic, take the time to check out Gary Wilson's website yourbrainonporn.com/ or his book: "Your Brain on Porn" (amzn.to/2tioV4k)
-Norman Doidge's "The Brain that Changes itself": (amzn.to/2sTPPQO)

Your children have obstacles that you didn't. Technology is improving so much that we as human's have everything too easy. The saying used to be, only the strong survive. Now it will be, only the smart will survive. If you do not realize the quick easy pleasures are destroying your ability to progress. You will never get out of a trap your own mind can put you in. This is something the older generation didn't have to deal with. Porn is just one of them, there will surely be more to come.

If porn use truly enters the realm of addiction, then simply trying to stop "cold turkey" will not work. All addictions follow a similar cycle and process, and essentially act as emotional coping mechanisms (that is to say they are medicative). To break free from the cycle, one must replace the unhealthy behavior with new, efficient coping mechanisms that help regulate and sooth negative emotions.

Exactly. Humans are built by addiction, because it's the brute method our brains use to force us to try and survive. We aren't creatures of habit, but creatures of addiction. You simply need to find actually positive 'addictions'. Exercise releases dopamine, getting money releases dopamine, etc,.

@@garyleaver3714 I am gonna stand behind this commenter. Finding a hobby really helps. I started playing the piano after 3 years again and I find my self far happier then before. It’s also not as addicting as league of legends, which also kinda makes me miserable and ignore all of my problems, making me 3 years older than my classmates. Will be Four next year, but I started playing piano again and my mental kinda got reset into a far better position. Next to that I’m also back on keto and slept in, in time last night so that might have helped too. I only need to do some more sports and have to start studying for once. Once I get those things down I think I will be in a Great Place.

In response to the last point you made about people choosing to exploit their brain's programming in favor of porn instead of real interactions, one of the sad truths for some people is that...they wouldn't have it any other way. The potential for intense porn experiences increases the threshold for pleasurable experiences such that one may not be able to see the point of giving it up, even though they know it's ruining them. It's one thing to be oblivious to your addiction to porn, alcohol, games, etc. It's another thing to look at people who have overcome their addictions. But it's heartbreaking to see those who are aware of their own addiction and yet choose to live with it, because, once again, they wouldn't have it any other way.

I would like to add that not only Twitter, Facebook or porn create these problems. But I also noticed that watching videos like this one on KZbin where I say to myself "hey, I learned something" the consequences are the same. I noticed that I start craving videos like this one. I strongly want to point out that this video is great to start reflecting your own behavior. Keep your eyes open because I think personally that all the media around us is specially designed to create that addictive behavior.

I fell 7 stories and was in a coma for 3 weeks. This accident wouldn't have happened if I wasn't an alcoholic, a constant porn user, and a constant drug user. I realized after I got out of my coma that it was the most beautiful thing because I was about a month without porn, it was like heaven. Everything looked so beautiful But I soon went back to my addicting ways, especially porn. Here I am 17 years later, and trying it again. It's really hard, but it gets easier. I sometimes am upset I have to walk around with a limp, but am truly thankful to be alive, because it could've been so much worse. Let me tell you, addictions kill, i know this 1st hand. I know sometimes life is confusing but just be patient and don't give up.

Now, while that is a very interesting topic, I see several issues here. Our brain is wired in a way that we seek out pleasure, whatever kind of pleasure. Like mentioned in the video, it can be sex, porn, gaming, your phone, youtube, fb, drugs and what not. Now, you cannot quit everything you’re doing and try living a let’s say dull life. Also the reset the brain thing is said easier than done. Also while I get that this video is focusing on porn in this aspect of addiction, I would’ve liked to give it a broader perspective as well as how to deal with the addictions one has. Obviously you can’t make a detailed video about porn, smoking, gaming and what not. But since our brain doesn’t distinguish between the kind of behavior we get pleasure from, I think there could’ve been some general tipps for all kinds of addictive as well as a suggestion of how much is ok. So, when I do one thing too often, I risk my brain of dumbing down dopamin receptors because my brain is constantly flooded with dopamine. Now we can’t and definitely shouldn’t stop doing things that are pleasurable. Because that would also lead to depression, anxiety and several other psychological as well as physiological problems. So when is too much too much? In my case, I actually realized for myself that in general when I watch too much porn regularly and masturbate once or twice a day, I have less sexual longing for my partner as well as problems coming during sex. I’m in my mid 30s so ED has never been an issue unless I’ve been drunk as a skunk ;-P Now, I also realize the unrest I feel if I don’t pick up my phone regularly, check emails, FB, YT, updates and so on, although making me scroll through YT and FB content and comments so much makes me feel miserable. Mostly because there is so much negativity online in different forms. When I forced myself to reduce the time spent I felt much better. Same goes for gaming, watching tv shows or movies and eating fast food or sweets. I’m also a smoker and have anxiety issues that I deal with by taking medication and therapy. So, yeah I got about everything there is. xDD The problem I have, and I don’t know if anyone has similar experiences, when I stop doing these things it makes me feel better and worse at the same time. I’m more easily on edge, feel anxious, restless. Still, my overall mood increases. The biggest issue I’m left with is, what to do with my time? I started going to a sports gym, reading, learning languages, playing the piano, hanging out with friends more often. But I am prone to overdoing things, having issues with finding the real balance. And let’s be honest, if I completely manage to quit all that stuff mentioning in the beginning of my post, I’ll definitely become more dopamine dependent on the new things I do. Long story short: Perhaps it’s just me but I believe humans need certain things that give them pleasure on a constant basis. And if the overall issue here is “too much dopamin is bad”, what is the alternative? Being miserable or just doing boring stuff and chores half your life? Is it really that unhealthy to indulge yourself in something you enjoy? Sure, smoking is bad for your physical health. The same goes for eating sugar in masses. But if people are happy with porn, games and anything else that doesn’t damage their body is it really that bad? Sure, watching porn 10 hours a day or doing anything 10 hours a day is not good. Not even going to the gym. Thus I think the most important question remains: What is just enough and when is it too much?

If you're finding your routine boring, then spice or sweeten it up a little by planning or daydreaming about your future. Yep that actually works. Why be a prisoner to your whims and past habits? When you can enjoy your present more as you set out to your future and goals while sharing it with the people you enjoy. P.S. the balance that you're talking about comes as you prioritize things. If you have enough time to fall back into habits, then you're either unmotivated, someone with no goals/passions, or someone who doesn't care about the future. So just let your future plans go wild 😁 Might help.

I think that the decreased dopamine response, is your body naturally telling yourself to "cool off", but that it is our emotional defenses / coping mechanisms that force us to just keep right on going and ignore the safety countermeasures, eventually numbing ourselves. And perhaps, even potentially dumbing down our brains a little due to over-stimulation or whatever...

So the reason they probably can't give tips on how much is harmless is because it all has addictive properties, no matter how little. ALSO we are all different, genetically and otherwise, as in we have different tolerances so we will be more or less prone to addiction than others.

It's so interesting that you go into the science of it all. I got the feeling about these things a while back. I couldn't quantify it, but I knew that using my phone, watching porn daily, and using drugs of any sort was doing all sorts of negative things to my body and mindset, and now I know it also reduces healthy brain functions too. Great video, thanks! I've already committed to reducing and even eliminating most of these things. Hard to not use my phone, but staying away from social media is the key really.
