I've been meditating for about 2 months now and have experienced flow state for the first time a few days. It is nothing like I've ever experienced before in my life. I've felt what people mean when they say "inner peace". I try to be logical and not give in to spiritual mumbo jumbo but it honestly felt like I was one with everything and like there was some sort of energy flowing through my body. My mind absolutely zero thoughts and I felt extreme clarity and bliss. I've felt flow state in other things before but this was absolutely different.

I used to play guitar. I remember doing scales to the beat of a metronome for roughly half an hour to an hour each day. I wasn't just focused on playing the notes, I was focused, as taught to me by my teacher, on making sure I struck each note precisely when the metronome ticked. For about a year, I thought the feeling of happiness I was experiencing came from the music. It wasn't until about ten years later, after I stopped playing, and curiously became less happy, that playing those scales was a form of meditation. So the happiness flowing from the music, was more than just the music. It was helping to calm my noisy mind, and help me concentrate.

I can attest to this. Anxiety runs in my family. I was about to visit the doctor because of unexpected fits of sadness/panic. A friend suggested meditation. I made the appointment with the doctor and thought, might as well give this a try. After about a week I realized that I had become mindful and was able to stop my mind whenever it tried to jump into an overthinking hole. I grew out of my social media addiction, my irritable bowel syndrome got better, and I was more patient, loving, understanding with the people around me. I ended up cancelling that doctor's appointment. I still have to meditate every day to keep my mind calm, but it's worth it. It keeps me normal. It keeps me sane.

Meditation is as far as you can get from ignoring something. It's different way of seeing. Normally you have a thought. I want an ice cream and next moment you are digging the fridge. In meditation you look at that as a thought. You ser how thought came up then it arose some craving feeling and now you focus on that feeling see where it goes. It's learning not to obey every thought in your mind.

+korbandallas That's not entirely true. Some forms of meditation are better suited for an excited mind, and others are better suited for a calmed mind (and everything in between). This is not always from negative things. You could have just gotten a promotion, and from that the mind might be a bit more excited than usual. This excitement makes meditation more difficult, which can be described as a sort of wrestling or struggle. Understanding the difference between meditating focusing on counting and meditating focusing on arm vibration is of key importance to understanding restlessness. Restlessness is considered the most difficult obstacle for mediators, because of this it is the most important meditation lesson.

This explains to me something I have been unable to explain: For about 5 to 6 years I have been more or less addicted to youtube. this point is relevant later. For the last year and a half, I have begun to very manually and very ineffectively make wooden instruments. Looking at my working process from a typical perspective, it looks like a tedious and uninspiring activity that ultimately results in a musical instrument that is more often than not out of tune, unimpressive in range, and very difficult to play. All because I do not use fancy formulas or tools. Why do I find this activity to be my favourite out of all the possible things I could be spending my time on? Learning new languages, spending time with friends, eating candy, etc. The cat's out of the bag, and it's called Flow. Cutting away at branches the thickness of your forearm with a pocket knife or a piece of flint that itself took hours to make just to see the wood split as you try to drill the bore of a flute is an experience everyone should have. When you hit that low and realise that you are not going to make that mistake again because your conviction simply won't allow it, it's magical.

I start with one body part at a time, concentrating on it for 5 minutes or so and then move onto another body part. I feel like there's a significant difference in how fast I heal when I hurt something or am sore or something compared to when I don't meditate. Something that would've taken a week or more to heal takes just 3 or 4 days. It's amazing the effect the mind can have on the body. Thought is a powerful thing.

Interestingly enough, this is also what game designers look for, the "flow state". It's the moment where the challenge meets the improvement required by the player, creating this perfect focus and natural progression through their design. It's very similar to how an athlete performs in his task, like tennis player hit the ball back and forth, anticipating, calculating trajectories, gauging the strength and direction of their next movement, etc.

Now I understand why in Kuroko's Basket (the anime) they visualize "The Zone" as being isolated underwater. When I watched the show when I was younger I thought it was just fiction (and it is a bit exaggerated for dramatic reasons obviously) but then I read a bit more about 'the zone' of athletes and realized it was a real thing... I've felt this "Zone" multiple times, for instance when I'm writing fiction and don't notice the time, or studying Japanese and then look at the time and it's 4 am and I've been studying for 8 hours straight not even stopping to pee or drink water, or when I'm practicing a really difficult piece on guitar and one day everything just 'clicks' and I can play all the hard parts effortlessly without thinking about it. Or for a much less 'active' activity even: reading. Sometimes I read at a pace of 500 words per minute when I'm incredibly immersed in a story, but it doesn't happen always. Man, the mere thought of the possibility of making this a consciously controlled "switch" really motivates me to try out meditation. Thanks for this video man.

The mind feeds on familiarity but it NEEDS to be updated with new elements every time. Like watching a porn video, surely the same video isn’t watched a thousand times regardless of how on point the fetish is for you in that particular video. Thus comes in the factor of building great paradigms that take a very long time in survival states to diminish or at least rewrite. Comfort will always be the enemy of the mind psychologically.

So "flow" is just hyperfocus, which is commonly experienced by people with ADHD. With ADHD you either can't focus on anything, or just suddenly you are relizing that several hours have passed, but you just wrote a full essay in one go, and it's perfect.
@Broadpaw_Fox5 жыл бұрын
Thankfully someone else sees this. I'm Aspergers, and this kind of focus is something I do every time I focus on any specific task. I can just tune out everything except what I'm trying to do, and go at it with everything I have. I always thought that was normal, but now I'm realizing it isn't. I will qualify this though - it definitely happens with things I'm interested in, ie my hobbies. Other tasks that are forced for some reason (assignments and job requirements that aren't interesting) make this hyper focus less prevalent. If there's nothing around to distract though, it still happens. :)

Thank you for this video. I found that I entered a state of flow for about six minutes while watching it. I credit your clear narration, engaging editing, and fascinating subject matter for this. I have come away from this with a much greater and more resolute appreciation of my mindfulness practices. I wonder why the brain defaults to the default mode network. If it is truly advantageous for us to engage our task positive brain regions, why do we not do so automatically? Is it more energy intensive to maintain flow? Do we suffer interpersonally when we are very focused on our task? I find that I am more empathetic and social when I am mindful, but I can see how a flow state can be inflexible, causing us to respond poorly to unexpected social interactions. Perhaps the ability to be distracted is more useful than we imagine.

I would argue that being more in this default network helps me personally, as I naturally do what’s more important to me without giving it much thought. Sure there’s moments in our social lives where we really have to think about our decisions, but I’d argue for the most part, this default mode network is more useful and helpful to our lives in all aspects. I also realize this is simply a subjective experience, I’m interested if anyone agrees with this.

No, you don't. You enjoy video games because it's an escape from the real world and an escape from responsibility. Video games interrupt complex thoughts long after you've finished playing. Distractions are an insidious disease of the mind.

I have that flow state when im at my boxing training and doing 1-2 combinations on the boxing bag till i cant do more. After a while it feels like as if im not thinking. It's amazing
@WarriorPocky7 жыл бұрын
Herp Derp That is true as well, and I have reflected on that. But what I was mainly referring to is that, I thoroughly enjoy playing because I am engaged so much and I feel that effect on me. Usually I am on autopilot and it's so difficult for me to focus on the mundane even if I want to (I have been thinking about getting tested for ADHD on the side). When you put it this way, don't tasks that engage you the same way would be considered an 'escape' then? If I said that "I like to play my guitar so much because it puts me in the 'flow' state," I feel like it would have been much more acceptable and not considered a 'distraction' because that is seen by many as a 'productive/marketable/etc skill'. Video games are generally frowned upon by society (because of the problems with addiction, escapism aspect, unproductiveness, etc etc) thus the reason I understand why you think this is the case. Bottom line is, video games wake me up. It helps me feel and understand how it's like to be functioning in that sense; and it inspires me to try and achieve the same thing with the other aspects of my life. I know other people can relate with this too, not just with video games. I'm not antagonizing what you've just said at all because I understand that; but I think you may have missed my idea on it and so I want to help you to see the other side of it, too.

Smoking doesn't taste like anything for me. It's the lung hit that does it. It's like cracking knuckles, there is a bit of tension when you inhale, which can be characterized as unpleasant, but then the environment in your lungs adjusts and feels full. Then you exhale. The dizziness, or the stimulant effect, often isn't a part of the experience. Granted, I may be internalizing my addiction, but the feeling is what our mind makes of the reality around us.
