CREATOR'S NOTE: Have to address the tainted rainwater comment as I'm getting heaps of comments refuting that - I think the reason it seemed less plausible to me is because I have lived the majority of my life in small town tropical Australia where rainwater collection is reasonably common and it would be nowhere near as polluted as it is in many other far more densely populated countries and urban areas around the world. So my take on that is obviously very biased. For a place like Kentucky it would make sense for the rainwater to be more tainted than what I'm used to. I am big idiot. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go pour myself a nice big glass of unfiltered rainwater.

Project Zomboid belongs in the upper echelons of "Labor of Love" games alongside Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, and No Man's Sky. For a game to be released almost a decade ago and still receive updates is impressive. Where most developers would move on, Zomboid powers through, and the quality shows that. I absolutely suck at PZ myself but this is one roguelike I don't hate. The things you learn from every life are invaluable and applicable, and the game never truly feels unfair. If you die, it's because YOU made a mistake, whether it was leaving your headlights on, or not closing the curtains in your starting house (personal experience). The recent multiplayer update brings community to PZ where you can work together to bring a sense of peace to the world again, however small. PZ is a special game, in a genre saturated with cookie cutter bullshit. Willing to think big picture and make you earn your living. A note on rain water: It's a common myth that freshly caught rainwater is healthy to drink without boiling. This is often *not* the case. It really depends on the region that you're in. If the water in your region is particularly filthy or acidic, it very well may transfer over to the rain, at least to some degree. There's also the issue of debris falling into the barrel as well, which would also bring in bacteria. It's always safer to just boil it, no matter what. Rain water is, technically, safer to drink unboiled than something from a stream, but it's better not to risk it.

Personally while I understand the idea of it killing late game challenge, I always like to turn down/off zombie respawning since so much about the game feels realistic. Then you have the zombie respawn mechanic making it so you can't clear an area. I prefer the meta events moving zombies in big clusters or random zombie migration over the surprise we spawned 20 zombies. I also enjoy the progression of looting an area then being forced to go to area to continue getting loot and being met with the challenge of securing an base to start looting that area dry. I also just like the idea that I could eventually just beat the apocalypse and kill all the zombies despite it being calculated to being around 52k on a population setting of 1. So realistically I never will.

You can turn on sleeping in multiplayer, both as an option and as a need (so you get drowsy and tired). To make the risk of losing your teammates' stuff greater you can also make infection instant or faster in the multiplayer settings, which means that you turn as soon as your are bitten or slightly faster. Shit can really hit the fan if your mate suddenly turns on you in the middle of combat. This does however remove the fear of your bandaged scratch being infected the virus. Great video though!

In regards to the multiplayer comments about sleep and tiredness those two things can actually be turned on by the host and for any players with at least a bit of knowledge on the game playing in a small group personally I'd HIGHLY recommend it. Project Zomboid was the first zombie game I've ever found that properly fulfills a very specific niche I wanted from the genre. For years, all I wanted was a proper zombie survival simulation game where you have to craft things and build a base and feed people and all that. And NO ONE was making them. The closest I got before PZ was State of Decay, and only the first one. The second decided to go in the same boring direction that every other zombie game was doing. So I was thrilled when I found PZ. It was the first zombie game that was exactly what I wanted it to be.

There is a workshop mod called Bound Journal which lets your character transcribe their stats into a craftable Bound Journal. The recipe is simple, just some leather strips and a Journal or Empty Notebook. If you die, you can go read that journal and your new character will learn all of the stats that were transcribed. Pretty cool! Mods open up so many possibilities. I should add that the act of recording and reading the stats isn't fast at the base level, it's kinda slow, much like reading skill books, so it isn't too cheaty, but it is fully customizable in the sandbox settings!

Notably, a little thing that I find missing is that there aren't any ranged weapon other than firearms, for that matter. One of the greatest features of us humans is that our wrists can bend in a way that allows us to throw objects fast and accurately. The inability to throw rocks, spears, or whatever the fuck you're holding at zombies is a big missing feature that would fundamentally change how combat is played in the game. Any sort of 'quiet' ranged combat is almost entirely nonviable other than if you somehow luck out and get a crossbow, despite how easy it'd be to just chuck a rock into a zed's skull from a handful of meters away. Normal bows also being missing is kinda weird considering how ubiquitous they are in much of zombie media. They're relatively easy to craft, though very hard to learn how to use well. I think they would be very interesting to have, with a couple of variants to add spice (recurve, long, etc.).
@davo_2 жыл бұрын
that's actually a good point - where the hell are the bows? even if they need to be crafted, as you can make spears and such. or as you said, even like a sling or something would be cool. the main reason i stray away from using guns is that they make so much noise, and if you kill a few zombies an entire horde will show up a few moments later. i can imagine missing even more shots with a bow than i already do with guns tho 😭
@joelfilho26252 жыл бұрын
@@davo_ Yep. I feel like bows would, ironically, be almost a late game weapon, when compared to the early game spears. Maybe they could have a strength requirement, rather than have too much skill requirement? Still, they should be difficult, since they're arguably the best option for ranged weapon in the apocalypse. I still would really appreciate being able to throw spears/rocks tohough, since it's a really simple thing most people would be able to do instinctively.

Regarding your comment about traits - phobias rarely go away, so a strong, irrational fear of blood, rooted deep in one's very soul, doesn't seem like a thing that would just disappear after a month.
@joelfilho26252 жыл бұрын
Still, there are a handful that are strange. Cowardice can only last so long as you spend months killing hordes of zombies. Eventually you're desensitized to it. The game somewhat models this, as the rate of panic gain goes way down until day 150 of surviving, effectively countering something like agora/claustrophobia, though not negating their effects (panic will reduce slower if you're outside/inside), but cowardice is still way too strong. Not to mention smoker too. It could take at least a month to do so, but you should be able to get over an addiction with abstinence.
@davo_2 жыл бұрын
I know phobias can be a very deep rooted thing but I feel like surely after being constantly exposed to it (it's basically impossible to avoid seeing or being covered in blood in this game) there'd be some form of desensitisation. Maybe not cured entirely, but you'd think it'd improve over time.

Davo, idk if you are aware but the devs already have it planned to make the NPC's like Rimworld's. Based on traits, backgrounds, ect. Also correction on your part, you can sleep to pass time in MP, it just works like Minecraft. Alternatively as well with the whole complaint about lack of sleep, that is fully optional. Multiplayer is fully tunable just like singleplayer. They even have options like you're ability to spawn at safehouses (which I find incredibly lame). Cool it's an option at all though. Additionally, the water stuff is explainable. It's a rule of thumb to boil water obtained from a natural source to kill infectious bacteria and other things that are bad for your body. On top of that, the infection was spread via airborne and waterborne. So it only makes more sense. Awesome video nonetheless, super happy to see that the game is finally getting all this love! P.S: They do plan to rework the entire traits system, especially the broken features of "free points cards".
