I'd love more media focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as there are so many groups all with different and rich cultures, and a lot of it never gets looked at outside of the Oceanic region. Even looking at my state, QLD, there are so many good things to pull from in general. A game set in the Daintree discovering new species of wildlife, a game set on a rural cattle farm where you have to deal with termites and drought, even a game where you have to help the GBR flourish could be interesting. I think if overseas studios tried to study us beyond a list of stereotypes it could be really neat.

In my opinion, IRL, Australian Aboriginals are probably one of the most disadvantageous ethnic groups in history to have ever formed any socio-political organizations to compete with other ethnicities. The Maori in New Zealand had successfully fought a trench war against European colonizers, but the Aboriginals at the current stage were just too victimized in history for game developers to design any winnable civ. Moreover, trying to group Aboriginals into one ethnic group while in fact they are a collection of various wildly different languages and traditions only classified as one ethnicity because they are "all native people when European settlers arrived" is problematic by itself.

Thanks for this! And yeah, indigenous Australians have the WORST representation in games. I like the idea of a game representing them properly. If there was going to be a GTA set in Australia, I would probably say a representation of Sydney and NSW. There are heaps of stories and ideas that I have that could work. But I reckon that a completely standalone game that isn't a GTA would work better. If you watch films and TV series of the elaborate crime syndicates that existed here (and still exist) in this country, and how they influence even politics and things like gambling and white collar crime; it would make a really good sophisticated narrative. Throw that in with all the activities you could do there would make it a fun game. I would say Melbourne and country Victoria could work as well, being from there and how biased I should be for the place, but it's a gritty place, don't know if players would recognize the Australianess of the city. It makes a fantastic backdrop for a crime story due to it's look and feel, especially if you have seen the films and television shows, but you can represent that in other places just as well in the US and Britian. Otherwise sequences in well represented Indigenous communites as a narrative contrast/wildcard to the Sydney game could be good too. I've personally lived out in a Warlpiri community in the NT; so I always want some sort of representation of them, the many Indigenous Australian cultures are all so fucking interesting.

Thank you for mentioning Aboriginal culture! It's one of the most underappreciated cultures in the world. Beautiful art, unique traditions and folklore. As long as it's done with respect, a game set in Aboriginal Dreamtime has such potential to be a unique experience. It could be used as an educational tool too, think like what Assassins Creed did in recent entries, with collectibles that teach you about history? It could serve as a portal for learning. Like, I've honestly had enough time in the spotlight of Australia international, I think the Original Custodians deserve a fair shake and a half now at the very least
@davo_3 жыл бұрын
I think that's what Virtual Songlines aims to be, more of an interactive and educational tool rather than a typical game, but it's great that they're showing the differences between the many different cultures among our First Nations people rather than treating them as one big homogeneous culture. And you're right, they have basically no representation at all in video games and are in basically no media at all outside of Australia which is sad considering how amazing it is that so many of these ancient traditions are still alive to this day.
@YourPalKindred3 жыл бұрын
@Sanctus Paulus the exact opposite argument can be made. "White people are only about 85% of the Australian population but are present in almost every piece of media. Why should we include them?" Anyway name the last time you played a game featuring any Aboriginal in a prominent roll. Go on. I'll wait. But honestly if you don't realise how much of a tosspot argument that is then idk what else to say
@YourPalKindred3 жыл бұрын
@Sanctus Paulus putting white people in 100% of media is overrepresentation dude. Oh and get this right - GAMES ARENT REAL LIFE. They aren't bound to reality and can represent anything any way they want. If it's set in Aboriginal Dreamtime you aren't gonna want almost everyone to be white, same thing if it's set in a modern day Aboriginal community. To act like they don't exist because they make up a minority is honestly kinda racist. And btw, a good portion of people don't really care what ethnicity their game character is. No normal white person will go "I don't like this game because I have to play as an African/Asian/Latino person" so to say no one wants to play as an Aboriginal is just plain wrong. Besides, I literally just expressed interest in playing as an Aboriginal in a game

Canadian here; honestly I feel the representation is even worse since... Well, admittedly most "actual Canadians" are just very similar to Americans. First Nations representation is a hot-button issue here though, just the same as it is in Australia. Anyway, I think the best, not-strictly-stereotypical depiction of a Canadian I've ever seen in a video game was, specifically, that one cutscene in GTA V where Trevor starts a Rampage against _the US army,_ just because two soldiers made fun of his accent. "It's a faint fucking accent! You can hardly tell!"
