I say this as a Protestant, there’s something to be said about the fact that saints come from all walks of life in Catholicism/Orthodoxy, while Protestantism’s logical end is the prosperity gospel pastor who says there’s nobody you should turn to but him (although he’ll say Jesus) as the model for what you should aspire to. The whole idea of the “Protestant work ethic” is putting “the grind” on the level of spiritual practice and saying “God is best served when his people prosper” instead “God is best worshiped when his people seek holiness”
@josepheridu33223 ай бұрын
Protestantism is free way to interpret doctrine. Capitalism is free way to trade. I agree that the Protestant work ethic is associated with Capitalism, but it goes way back: Germanic people were never that centralized, and avoided centralization of religion, and proof of this is how divided Germany was before the Holy Roman Empire.

It's also a free way to mason if you catch my drift
@tszxc88363 ай бұрын
Yes, there is a racial essentialism that is missing when the divide is split by religion. The faustian aspect is also missed, in many cases it is not that one works to live or lives to work but that one lives to *strive*. The amish are not particularly capitalistic though they are entrepreneurial and do turn profits, honest religion is declining in many places, for example Germany, but it is safe to say that Germany will always dominate Europe economically when left to its own devices, and its safe to say that Haiti, Papua New Guinea, and Liberia will never be economically or capitalistically significant no matter how much they protestant

@ShaNaNa2423 ай бұрын
@@adenjones1802 they never sold indulgences. You would recieve them if you donated to Pope Leo X's campaign to rebuild St. Peters, they reduced temporal punishment for sin and purgatory. The practice was later stopped because it was overly abused. St peter was not meerly a personal property for the church, but a cultural marvel and something that many many people loved.
@adenjones18023 ай бұрын
@@ShaNaNa242 They didn't sell indulgences. They just provided them in exchange for donations. I see. Very meaningful difference here. Also cultural marvels that people love which were funded by the poor who were swindled is exactly the kind of ego projects that fascist and dictators love doing.

Quaker Oats is NOT affiliated with the Society of Friends (Quakers). That name was chosen as a marketing tactic to pay on the good reputation of Quaker merchants. It was American Quakers that invented the modern practice of prices posted publicly, instead of the merchant changing the price on the spot based on the customer. They were so trusted that you could send your child to go buy something without great they would be ripped off, at a time when it was presumed a shop keeper was very likely to charge as much as they could get away with. Think of the cliche scene of the naive person asking "how much is it, Mister" to which the seller responds "how much do you have on you? ... Why that's just enough!"

To correct some misconceptions. The distinctives of calvinism at the time of it's founding weren't really predestination. Most Western Christian sects had variations of predestination at that point in time. Martin Luther, who laid the basis for Lutheranism, taught predestination. The Catholic Theologian Thomas Aquinas taught predestination. The Calvinists' main disagreements which led to them being a separate sect were actually over the nature of communion. The Catholics taught transubstantiation where the bread and wine become the body and blood of Jesus, the Lutherans taught consubstantiation (although Lutheran theologians don't like the term) where the body and blood of Jesus is with the bread and wine in a mysterious way, while John Calvin taught a spiritual presence.

Capitalism is merely one of the latest iterations of methods for attaining and maintaining hierarchies and dominance; religion being an ancient one. Religion does not exist without indoctrination. Like breaking a horse in order to ride it, religious indoctrination is a form of abuse, particularly with respect to children. Those traumatized as such develop emergent personality traits that leave them obsessed with dominance and hierarchy. Ultimately, our fundamental societal struggle between our innate egalitarianism and emergent urges for hierarchy and dominance, dates back ~10-12k years when we transitioned from immediate return societies to one based on surplus and commodification. Prior to this, so for 95% of human existence, we thrived in primarily egalitarian societies, this is our innate nature. We know this from relatively recent (roughly over the last 50 years) advances in behavioral science; philosophy prior to this can be interesting, providing historical perspectives, but are largely irrelevant as they provide little explanatory value.

By capitalism you mean things like work ethic and only using money for the benefit of the company not burning it up like the Vanderbilt’s . Modern big business and corporations have nothing resembling the stuff you’ve talking about . Small businesses if they fail they really fail , the big guys just get baled out. Imagine a small business owner who’s bankrupt going a financial investment house looking for a loan not for the business but his lifestyle.
