Makes economic sense when you no longer live with your parents and are just starting out in life, to share accomodation and all the expenses that go with it. A lot of young people rent grotty one bedroom flats when they could do much better if they shared with a couple of friends. Of course it isn't always possible to find friends who are reliable and not a pain in the ass to live with.

For the same reason James Stewart and Henry Fonda lived together because they were single. Even in the 1960s single men and women didn't live together that's why in I dream of Jeanie tv show Tony had to keep Jeanie hidden away when he ad visitors.

Copy of my comment, (the Sociological History, from my degreed studies and research.) Apply to the Now media articles and it gives the greater understanding of the then. Copy: *The actual HISTORY and Sexual Perspective Defined:* ▶ "Knowledge is truly Power and abundantly Freeing" *Their era offered a fully different value of perspective and understanding. In knowing History, European and Mediterranean History and Culture, the concept understanding includes a Sexual Perspective. *▶Note:* During the 1920's the the "Power of Media as a "Tool for various Propagandas" was realized by and for the "Powerful Few", i.e., 1% of 1%, (Print Media had clarified this, but the Radio, then TV, took it to a whole other level".) *▶Point:* This made the changes to the Information known by the Public, prior to WWII and Post WWII, "the following Eras thru Current Era have a Collective Mainstream Awareness based on the 1950's Picture of Life, from the Produced Films and TV Shows. Recommended Watch: "The Century of the Self" *valuable information* Prior to this, in the era of the Golden Hollywood Actors, the Carey Grant, Randolph Scott, Tyrone Powers, Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda era, there was a more "Euro-Mediterranean Concept" that the affluent had an opportunity to adapt and it included a Sexual Concept that very much, like the Greeks held back to Antiquity, was a Conception of Sex and Sexual Identity as 2 separate and independent subjects. *This meaning:* Sex was or could be viewed from a perspective of it as an option to partake in from an almost "sports like" perspective. Totally absent of emotions, one that's easily seen as the "male perspective" all the way through. Yet then it included Feline/Feline and Male/Male, like a Tennis Match, even to the point of "Mixed Doubles", no pun intended. Men throughout History, depending on Culture, would partake in male to male sexual acts, and it very much was a result of the "Male Libido and Lack of Females" with which to "Sport". *▶Note: in the Western Era the Brothels were called "Sporting Houses"* Social Standards in Male Dominated Societies of this World have deemed a Woman "de-flowered" should she partake in other than marital sex. This left men few women with which to "Sport", and their drive/need having such a strong focus, they established a reasonable secondary option. Thus I'm saying, when in the 20th Century, Opportunity presented itself through Film Careers, Stardom, Financial Abundance - the "Time and Opportunity" to "Sport", but the Risk of Female's: pregnancies, law suits, Media, and generally the "tired of the Drama Game of Hollywood and Nightclubs", they opted for "the Mediterranean Method", and the subject of Homosexual had a completely distinctly different definition, and that being the individual preference for male only, with the emotional attachments and the Physical Predisposition of, the "Physiology of Homosexual" if you will, that was the key and true defining difference. One being purely a sporting physical act and the other having the Emotional and Self Identifying Perspective. It was actually a far more realistic and mature minded concept and perspective than what became the "norm of Western Thought", a really Ego/Lower Minded and judgemental perspective. (Far less abuse and date--rapes would accumulate with the "Mediterranean Sexual Mentality") Women in their era were Socialized to be far more dramatic and needy, creating a far greater resistance to giving them opportunities and getting involved in the "dating scene" History with Facts ...

I lived with my friend for almost seven years before his death. We lived together because we were poor and in our 20's. He was also my best friend. As a kid I loved their movies. Randolph Scott always played the good guy. You knew you could trust him. Cary Grant was hilariously funny. He made it look effortless and you knew no matter what happened his character was going to do the right thing. They both seemed to be liked in their lives outside movies and both contributed to their communities. It's clear they enjoyed each others company. If it was or wasn't more than that, good for them!

WWI didn't start in Europe until July 28, 1914. America didn't get into the war until April 6, 1917. Scott enlised in the military in April of 1917. Scott would have been "19" not "14" when he enlisted. The age of consent to enlisted in the military was, and is still 18 years of age. So Scott would have had no reason to lie about his age in order to enlise.

The one HUGE thing missing from this story is the legal issue. Gay sex was a felony in California (until 2003! Although prosecutions were rare after the 1970s). Admitting to being in a gay relationship with another man (Lesbian sex wasn't technically illegal) was a confession of a crime. This gave your employer legal grounds to fire you, landlords to refuse to rent to you, etc. It also opened you to prosecution -- and district attorneys would prosecute: if they had evidence (such as a confession) they had an obligation to prosecute under California law. So keeping it a secret was not just about your 'reputation', it was about keeping you from being arrested and dragged into court, and being sentenced to prison. BTW: it is still completely legal to fire someone for being gay in more than 20 states in the US today (unless it is specifically prohibited in your contract of employment).

Just because they lived together does not mean they had a homosexual affair ! Cary Grant was the most elegant handsome versatile Actor in then Hollywood ever in my humble opinion . Yes he had some internal problems to deal with and it affected his relationship with women . I can understand after that traumatic childhood that there remained some emotional scars .i can relate because i had a traumatic childhood and it took me many years to sort it out . Of course it affected also greatly my relationship with men .

Whether they were gay or not, the fact that they kept it private should be respected. You should not have to announce to the world what your sexual orientation is. Whether they were lovers or not is no big deal nowadays, but it is a fact that these two guys were penny pinchers and cheap. Randy Scott was the stability that Grant needed in his life. He came from poverty and was very unsure of himself. The only two people who obviously know the full extent of their relationship was and always will be the two of them, but I personally just don't believe that their relationship was sexual. The reason for me is primarily that if it was they did a really good job of hiding it from ALL of the people who were close to them. There are plenty of other stars that were in homosexual relationships or who were bisexual where the studios hid their relationships from the public because the public would never have been able to accept it, but in most of those cases there was almost always someone close to them who knew the truth who could tell the story later when it did become more acceptable. Cary Grant had 5 wives. I can imagine him successfully keeping that side of himself hidden from one or two of his wives, but did he really a) choose to keep that side of himself hidden from all 5, and b) successfully manage to keep that side of himself hidden from all 5? Sure, it's possible. It's also possible that he shared that part of himself with one or two wives and that the wives that knew happened to be really good at keeping the secret even after the relationships ended. I can absolutely see them not being so vicious as to leak it directly to the press, but I wouldn't think they would be as worried about sharing it with a best friend that they trusted or with other actors or actresses at the time that they knew wouldn't be judgmental. Lots of people have mentioned that they shared a home even when they should have been successful enough to be able to afford their own places, but first of all just because your rich doesn't mean that you don't appreciate saving money. That goes double if you happen to work in an inconsistent field like acting where you may get a big paycheck one day and be out of a job the next. You never know when your career will be completely over because you suddenly look too old, so the wise thing for any actor to do is to save for the future just in case. And second of all, sometimes it is nice to just not be lonely. I wouldn't want to share space with just anyone, but I do have a couple of really good friends that I would share with if we both happened to be looking for a roommate. Perhaps they had one of those friendships where they could tolerate each other and had a ton of fun together, so it just felt better to live together than be lonely living alone. Also, considering how taboo homosexuality was back then, if they really were sleeping together why weren't they more discrete about their relationship by chosing to have two homes for appearances? They could probably even get away with having what the world would see as regular sleepovers. There are exceptions to every rule, but generally when you have a secret to hide you do everything in your power to avoid starting rumors that happen to be really close to the truth, and as two particularly attractive men they must have known that living together and that doing somewhat sexy photo shoots together would start the rumor mill going. If their sexuality was an open secret and they weren't focused on hiding it, I can see them doing that. If they weren't having a sexual relationship I can see them not even realizing it or realizing it and laughing about it. But for them to so successfully keep the secret would have required being very careful, and I just can't reconcile the idea of doing stuff that will likely start the rumor mills going full speed while at the same time successfully protecting the secret for all time from everyone or at least nearly everyone. Sure, there's the double bluff potential explanation, but if you are being that careful you don't need a double bluff. It's much better to never get the rumors started in the first place or to let the rumors happen because you aren't actually ashamed of what you are doing and you are only keeping up appearances in the public eye because the studios instructed you to do so. Once again, maybe they really were just incredibly discreet and managed to have a relationship without a single person around them figuring it out or the people closest to them even suspecting it. Just because the homosexuality/bisexuality of many other stars was considered an open secret in Hollywood, that doesn't mean every homosexual/bisexual couple in Hollywood was an open secret. Maybe they didn't need handlers to keep the scandal out of the newspapers and managed to do that themselves. Maybe they either never needed or wanted to confide that side of themselves to anyone, or maybe they were really good at picking truly discreet people with whom to share that secret. However, the significant lack of evidence combined with the fact that those who knew them best don't seem to believe it really makes me think that this is one of those situations where people are jumping to the conclusion that just because two people are living together that means they must be sleeping together. That tends to be even more believable when both people happen to be really good looking. It also goes double when the two people work in an artistic area like Hollywood. And perhaps some people are secretly hoping it's true because if these two men were sleeping together it means they are additional icons that can be put forward as potential faces of the gay pride movement. In this particular case, I personally believe the idea that these two men were sleeping together comes more from a place of multiple people seeing it as a wish fulfillment than it does from anything based in reality.

Cary Grant died 35 years ago. If he was gay, chances are he'd had relationships - or just had sex - with more than one person. So why didn't these people speak up when he died. When Liberace died, people can out of the woodwork to say they had sex with him, or was propositioned by him. Same with Rock Hudson. So why didn't anyone try to get their 15 minutes of fame by claiming they screwed Cary Grant? Because it didn't happen. No one even thought of making it up when he died either. Grant was well known for wanting to get married and having a family, which is something he pursued into his 60's and 70's. His marriages didn't end because he was gay, or found sleeping with men. They ended because in some of the marriages he has affairs with his leading ladies and with others, he was just so damaged he ended up ruining his other marriages with demanding and demeaning behavior (just ask Dyan Cannon). It's annoying that two men who love each other as brothers and want to spend their bachelor years palling around together are labeled as something they weren't just because people today want to put their own spin on things.

Look at the biography of Orry-Kelly. He had a significant affair with Grant-living together and supporting each other until they each achieved success. Grant as an actor and Orr-Kelly as a dress designer. Orry-Kelly kept Grant’s secret not to jeopardize Grant’s success, even when Grant made disparaging public remarks about Orry-Kelly’s homosexuality. Dress designer Blackwell also claimed an affair with Grant. Grant seems to have been bisexual, also having interest in women. Not career killing today, but definitely something to be kept secret at the time.

This video paints a reasonable portrait of the Scott-Grant relationship so far as it goes - but there is some missing context. There's been slightly less speculation about Scott's sexuality than there has been about Grants through the years, most probably because a) he wasn't as big a star, and b) as an individual he was more circumspect. But the known facts about Cary Grant leave little doubt that he was gay, which in turn makes it even more obvious that his relationship with Scott was a good deal more than platonic. Before becoming famous in Hollywood, Grant lived and worked in New York, having migrated from the UK. During that time he had an on-going relationship with future Hollywood designer Orry-Kelly, which Kelly documented in his memoirs, only recently made public. As a struggling actor Grant was also known to get by on "the kindness of strangers", as Tennessee Williams would have said. Not quite a rent boy, but definitely a bit of a gigolo, using his charms on wealthy older men. In his Hollywood years Grant was a client of Hollywood pimp, Scotty Bowers, who arranged many assignations with young men. Grant's early marriages were quite transparently arranged as a cover for his sexuality, and there wasn't even much effort at the time to pretend otherwise. Like Scott, Grant eventually settled into longer heterosexual relationships, but then so did most gay men of the time. It was what you had to do to get by, especially in the public eye. And for Hollywood stars the advent of tabloid tell-all journalism in the 50s made being carefree about one's private life much more perilous than it was in the 30s and 40s. In short, when you consider all the evidence, there's really no doubt at all that Grant & Scott were lovers.

Sad that people are made to feel that being friends and sharing living quarters is suppose to mean they are having a sexual relationship. Do many young people could do better if they shared rent with a friend. When younger I lived with a female friend and rest assured no one said anything to us about sex. This was before the sexual revolution in the 60's. Was able to save up money because of this.

While I've always enjoyed the older movies from the silents through the early 1960's, it was in a Statler Brothers song with the lyrics "What ever happened to Randolph Scott?" that I first heard of him.

Cary Grant and Randolph Scott were a natural gay couple before that was in any way understood, much less publicly accepted. Their love for each other outlived their total of seven female spouse setups and Billy Graham's anti-gay religious influence over Scott. They remained close friends until Grant died (Nov. 29, 1986). When he heard of his old friend's death, Scott reportedly put his head in his hands and wept. He himself would die a little over 2 months afterwards (March 2, 1987).
